I was advised to rename a file and I did. My phone will not boot. Can you tell me how to use adb to rename the file back. It's in /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/telephony.db I renamed it to telephony.db.old
I got to the data/data directory, but now I am stumped on how to get into com.android.providers.telephony
It's telling me that com.android.telephony/providers is not a directory..
Try wiping your dalvik-cache/cache from your recovery

Try:
Code:
adb shell mount /data<enter>
adb shell mv /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/telephony.db.old /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/telephony.db<enter>
This is assuming you renamed the file in question and kept it in the same directory.

Can someone please tell me how to push an apk file to the /system/app folder? I'm trying to overwrite a file there.
"Read-only file system" is the error i get.
Thanks.
Run "adb remount rw" first.
So I rebooted to recovery and I push a file into /sdcard
after I shell, I check it's only file in there!! So then I reboot and then adb shell again when phone is regular mode and I don't see that file
Where did I push the file when in recovery? I can't find it next time I reboot to recovery then did LS, the file is gone! Can I delete that file or its lost/hidden or what's going on?
Im not even going to read the whole thing. If u pushed the file and u can't figure out how to reboot from recover just pull battery and restart

You need to mount your sd card to /sdcard.
The file was stored to / on the temporary ramdisk. Do "mount -a" in shell first.

Thanks for the good info! SO basically the file I pushed over was removed upon rebooting correct? I just don't want that file to be on the ramdisk or sdcard anywhere since the /sdcard was not mounted.
I am using ADB to push the bootanimation.zip to /data/local but nothing is changed in the phone.
I am using Telus Raidroid fully rooted and s-off.
Any ideas?

Make sure you mount the location as well (from command prompt in windows, or equivalent) - type what's in bold-type:
C:\SDK\Tools> adb shell
# mount /data/local
(screen will then print: )
mount /data/local
# ls /data/local <~this will list what is stored in this location.
(or, if it's supposed to be system/cust... as above poster said)
# mount /system/customise/resource
mount /system/customise/resource
If neither works, try using ES File Explorer. Change it's settings to "view system files", then look around in the folders until you find the bootrecovery.zip & where it's been placed. Not 100% sure but I was under impression you need to mount /filelocation to copy the bootanimation.zip to that location.

Thanks I'll try that later when I get home! Nothing I read mentioned having to mount anything...but I also never got any errors in ADB when pushing the file.
The file was successully pushed as per EF File Manager to /data/local/
You don't always have to use "push" to get the file into /data/local
Free apps like "Android Mate" can also let you copy files into the root of your phone. The terminal apps also allow you to copy the bootanimation.zip
cp /sdcard/bootanimation.zip /data/local
How the hell can i delete a folder that can't be seen via PC connection but i can see it using es file explorer?

Depending on where it is you need to mount it first. Which folder are you trying to delete?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
I had a folder that became corrupted (repeatedly interrupted game data downloads, I think). I was unable to delete it (even as root) and received an Access Denied error. I was able to rename the folder (so it wouldn't conflict anymore) and delete the majority of its contents (still received the Access Denied error on a file or two). I eventually had to do a full wipe via fastboot -w to get rid of the corrupted files.
had the same problem. had to reflash su.zip and it worked. can't explain it though. just reaching at straws

it's the folder created by the Photaf application.
i uninstalled the app and the folder is still there...permissions are writable, not hidden...
i can rename it, but can't delete it....and the subfolder within it as well...
i remember it happened once before and the only way to get rid of it was to reinstall the ROM (AOKP). Once installed, i could delete the folder.....

no effect, still can't be removed
LE: WTF, i just plugged in the phone into USB for charging and i saw the folder?! It deleted just fine?
Damn weird didn't do anything different than yesterday when i couldn't even see the folder via PC...
Thank you!
My Asus Transformer (TF101) hasn't been able to download anything to the Download folder for months now. Even Opera (which I installed just to try and fix this) could only download to a different folder. I did what you said, plugged it into the computer and first renamed the folder with ADB but couldn't create a new Download folder. "File already exists." Lies. Windows Explorer said it was still there as Download so I deleted it in Explorer and created a new folder named Download. The create failed but Android said it was there and Voila! I can download again. Very weird, but not ready yet to reformat in fastboot. Thanks guys!
If you're rooted you may be able to delete the files from /data/media, which is the true location, instead of the visual SD that you are seeing.
Could also be a file ownership issue.
Using a terminal emulator, use the following command to list ownership and permissions:
ls -l
(Lower case letter L, not i or 1)
Most of the files and folders should show up as media_rw, but the problematic ones may show up as numbers. To fix them, boot into CWM recovery, plug in the USB cable, go into adb shell. Also make sure that /data is mounted in the CWM mounts menu. Then:
cd /data/media
chown -R media_rw.media_rw *
Its really bothering me. When flashing a Rom in the aroma I choose this red theme I never used. Well in the vrtheme folder on my SD card (internal storage) there is a bunch of. PNG files that show up in my gallery. If I try to delete from gallery they just come back. And if try to delete from file explorer with root permissions. It says file can not be deleted. This doesn't make sense or am I missing something?
Help would be appreciated.
Thank you
Give this a shot (assuming you are rooted)
find the folder they are in (for arguments' sake let's say they are in /storage/sdcard0/vrtheme/
download terminal emulator app
open it and type the following commands without quotes...
"su"
"rm /storage/sdcard0/vrtheme/*.png"
see if they are gone now.

Thank for trying to help. But if I go to directory all the way down to the PNG file I would have to repeat like 150 times
But anyways when I tried it. I was granted rights for su. Then received the # in terminal.
Then I did rm followed by file path.
It said permissions denied :/
Just wanted to report my findings. If you do a search for aroma file manager on xda. With that you can delete anyfile on SD card if given operation denied with any normal file explorer with root access.
FYI - sdcard0 is not really your SD Card at all. sdcard0 is the internal storage memory. extSdCard is your actual SD Card. And UsbDriveA, UsbDriveB, etc.. are your external drives like USB thumb drive, USB external drive, etc.
If you deleted file/s and then later came back that is because the file/s are being put back with the related app/s that the file/s are related too. Deal with the related app/s in order to stop the deleted file/s from reappearing.
If you can't delete the file/s at all then change the permissions of the file/s you want to delete and/or change the permissions with the folder that holds the file/s to be deleted. Then you can delete the file/s. You can change permissions with a file manager like Root Explorer, though you need to be rooted to change some permissions. Be careful. Deleting the wrong file/s can make your device bricked.

You wouldn't have to delete each .png file separately. Just type exactly what Admiral Sir Manley Power typed. The line command he wrote uses the wild card ( * ) so the command would delete all .png files within that folder at the same time.
Change the permissions of the folder that holds the files. Then try it. Make sure the app related to the files are not still caching the files. Caching the files would make the files to be currently in use. That would make the files not available to be deleted. You can also use another theme app, force kill the app related to the .png files, then delete the files. Then go back to that theme app.

I no SD card should be external. But on our note 2 the directory for internal is labeled SD card. Then vrtheme was in a folder named. " 0" I tried to change permissions and even the owner of file and folder, but it wouldn't let me with root permissions. That's why I was so stumped I had to post on xda.
And its not that the file would get deleted then put back it was I couldn't delete at all. There was no app to my knowledge for vrtheme.

try this instead...
rm -f /storage/sdcard0/vrtheme/*.png"
if that doesn't work... try this....
chmod 777 /storage0/vrtheme
chmod 777 /storage0/vrtheme/*.png
rm -rf /storage/storage0/vrtheme

I thanked everyone who replied, but I actually got it figured out. I flashed this zip file in recovery called aroma file manager. While let me delete whole folder from recovery. I appreciate all who helped.
