Is there any way I can get the notification bar to display the network service provider?
The area I work in has difficult coverage, but T-Mobile switch over to Orange if there is no signal.
I would like to know when I'm on Orange without having to dial out.
Cheers
Paul
App or a mod for that. Why would you want to know. It tells you in the lockscreen anyway.
I've normally got it on the dashboard, for sat nav use.
Knowing which provider I'm with at that precise moment would save wasted time & data - better to move to somewhere with my home provider signal, rather than try a connection that isn't up to it.
switch to a custom rooted ROM

On my Tmo TP2 the icon that notates that you're in Edge, GPRS, or 3G is missing from the task bar at the top. Is this the case with any one else?
I've been wondering since I got the phone why its not there. Its on my Tilt & on the MDA, but missing on the TP2. How do I get it back (without changing the task bar icons)?
you can see the difference in the 2 screen shots to see what i'm talking about. The first is my phone & the second is some stock image. see the H? yeah, mine should show a 3G beside the signal bars as well. WTF?
Just got my replacement Tmo TP2 (for another issue) in the mail & it still does the same thing. These were taken without modifying anything on the new phone. Again, no big G/E/3G/H right next to the signal bars

What ROM is on the phone in you're picture? The unbranded HTC Touch Pro2, is there any way to put the unbranded ROM onto the TMo US TP2?
its the stock Tmobile TP2 ROM. There probably is a way, I just don't want to flash to a different ROM
I don't think I had any problems getting E,G,3G to show up when I first got my device. Now I use a different set of taskbar items so I cannot verify that.
Its replaced by the "3G T-Mobile" located on the left... when you dont have the 3G it goes down to just "T-Mobile".. there is a registry tweak that allows you to bring back the 3G, E, G, but i cannot remember where it is located in the registry, I saw it on the Raphael section
So it was brought to my attention here that even in the Tmo TP2 manual there are screenshots where the icons aren't there.
It seems that Tmobile disabled it. Stupid. Why do that? Oh well, putting a taskbar theme on the phone fixes it.
I would be interested in seeing the registry tweak you're talking about BlackAccord.
As far as the 3G "Carrier" vs "Carrier" thing, that's on all TP2s, not just the Tmobile version
I have a custom task bar that I got over on PPCGeeks and it has the 4 bars with a blue E above them AND another E next to that by itself! I want to get rid of the blue E above the bars without changing any of the other icons, but have no idea how to do it.
as far as i know, you can't change the blue E unless you revert to the white E. the E on your signal bars is to notate that you're actually connected to data while the big E is to notate that you're in an area with EDGE data coverage.
don't have it in mine either and was wondering at first why nobody at tmonews knew about it when you asked, i guess they're all hardcore tmo users with no unbranded phones
as you've probably known from your Tilt, the H or 3G shows up when not using data (2100 present), but switches to a E when the Tilt data is activated(no 1700). My guess is Tmo removed the icon in a pathetic attempt to not draw attention to the absence of their anemic 3G coverage. But the icon placeholder is there, just blacked out, since when you get a notification, there's a blank space between the message icon and the antenna bars. I too was trying to get it back, but have gotten used to the blank space, since I just canceled the data after they blocked web2go network-wide yesterday.
edit:
check out this photo of TMUS TP2 alongside Pharos Traveler 137, which has both ATT & TM 3G bands. There is good reason why TMUS would want to hide that icon

I have a Tele2 sim, which uses Netcom's network, in turn causes my phone to roam at all times, which is normal for how things are here. The problem is that the Roaming sign by the signal bars replace the speed-signs, so I don't know if I'm using Edge, 3G or HSPDA... Except for going into the settings, about phone and checking the status there.
The Galaxy S I had showed the speed and traffic with another icon besides the signal bars, so it had it sorted.
So, I want to replace the R-sign with the speed sign, in short.
tele2
i don't know if you solved your problem, but i am curious if you have.
here's the thing: a friend of mine has just as i have a prime, i am rocking vodafone he is using tele2. my vodafone card works in both, a kpn sim works in both... his tele2 works just in mine in his phone it just shows the R as in roaming on top of the range bar and nothing else.
Now is that particalur issue not the main problem...though it tells me something now: the main problem is that on his phone, just showing the R it refuses to go on the internet through 3g or H or whatever, besides wifi of course.
Anybody got a clue on what might be the issue?
thnx in advance

If you're rooted you can replace the icon. Its in the SystemUI apk @ /res/drawable-xhdpi

The R is the symbol for roaming, the apn settings are probably wrong.
/Edit: After a little research (google) it seems the problem is because Tele2 uses the networks of Netcom and Telenor where they do not have coverage themselves.
Don't worry though, the Roaming charges is not "international" charges. So you will not be skinned to the bone from your phone company.
Only fix is to change operator.

we don't know...tele2 doesn't know...we tried everything in every way possible...it's too weird...propably something simple you wouldn't think of....
Did you try checking the option that allows data connections while roaming? That's off by default of course in stock android.
my ADP1 (1.x android) had a big fat warning that "data connection was lost because of roaming" Not sure what ICS displays in that case...
I'm in the Netherlands and also on Tele2 and have the same issue. Because here Tele2 uses T-Mobile masts, I have to have international roaming turned on or I get no data, regardless of APN, so my phone thinks I'm roaming all the time.
The same is true for my other family members who are on Android and Tele2, but I'm the only one with ICS. Even though our phones all need to be set to international roaming, we are not billed as roaming.
No answer for you, just hoping for a solution without having to root (because I don't want to yet )
Same goes for me. I'm with Telfort (Netherlands), which uses KPN network. I've already tried installing different modem, but that doesn't seem to help.

This sounds promising to me, but I actually don't understand anything of it. Could you explain?
It's good to see there are more people with this particular problem, in different countries too. Hopefully someone will come up with a solution soon. Even if you don't have this problem, why wouldn't you want to see you connection speed travelling abroad?

OK, i understand what you mean now! I copied systemUI.apk from system/app folder (upload with dropbox, quite easy), changed .apk to .zip and got all the .png files from the res folder in the apk.
Then it turns out there are very neat little icons with corresponding file names. There are files for G, 3G, E, H and 4G connection speeds. And there is a 'R' for roaming file. Off course i could change that png to, lets say, the H icon. But then i still won't be able to see my connection speed right? I will just always see an H icon, since i'm always roaming.
What i am, and supposedly others are, looking for is the place with the settings for these icons. I would like to tell my phone that even when roaming, i just want to see an icon which displays the connection speed, not the fact that i'm roaming.
Little off topic: what is the difference between blue and gray icon colors?
Thanks!

I am feeling very stupid. Turns out that the solution is very simple, I just had to change a very normal setting. Go to: system settings/more (under wireless and networks)/mobile networks (or in Dutch: systeeminstellingen/meer (onder draadloos en netwerken)/mobiele netwerken). Turn off (data?) roaming (NL: gegevensroaming) en turn on national data roaming (NL: same, since it's not translated). Maybe do a short flight mode, and voilĂ , you can see you network speeds!
Nice one, it wouldn't have occurred to me...I expected to have to live with it until my contract ends in a few months.
Definitely not using Tele2 for much longer...everyone in my house is having I issues with texts not arriving, regardless of handset.

Good luck with a different provider, but don't go with Telfort than!
I need a widget (preferably) which lists the current in-range wifi connections so that I can quickly swap instead of going to Menu>system settings>wifi>pick the server... I work in a buliding where half of it is one network and the other is a second network, on opposite side of the building, the service goes to crap so... fast switching is essential.
I did search, google search, but all the apps that come up seem 2-3 years old and not what I want... Any way to do this??
I would think it would switch automatically between 2 networks but this seems to be what you are looking for:

My GN3 is usually on wi-fi, as it's available to me at both home and work. yesterday, I tried to use the internet, but I had no data available to me. Also, no data icon in the status bar. Came home, and it automatically signed back onto wifi. Talked to TMO, with no solution. All usual stuff done...rebooting battery and SIM pulled, and yes, mobile data is selected. Oddest thing is that when I search for Network Operators, i get the TMO My Account message that mobile data is turned off, even tho is shows as on. APN shows T Mobile US LTE, but when I go into Edit access point, all options are greyed out. Ready to pull hair out or at least find Mr. Samsung and thrash him. Any help?
I would like to know about the "Mobile Data" icon in the task bar so I could easily enable and disable it. Does it come with stock rom or any custom ROM has it. Such as Jedi Elite V5 ?

hey all,
I have att on my fire phone , and every now then(atleast once a day) I lose service. It would say searching on the signal bar and it never finds it lol. I would have to restart the phone and then it reverts back to normal. is anyone else having this issue?
I'm guessing it's the fact that LTE has lower signal quality than 3G and
once you force the phone to 3G (once per reboot) it will never disconnect.
LTE is used only for data, when you make calls it will switch to 3G anyways,
so call your phone while it's in LTE and you should notice signal improve ...
To switch do this:
Same as dialing *#*#4636#*#* but this is easier to use:
play.google.com /store/apps/details?id=diewland.testing.phone
Go under Phone Info, then select 3G auto I believe, 4th down from top.
Also, contact Amazon support (right from help on your phone) if the above fixes it.
Tell them you want settings for disabling LTE added to the phone,- I did that and they
said they've submitted to developers, but I guess it's best if more people request this ...
