[Q] dk17 to dk28 - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

how do i go about doing this? ive searched but im overwhelmed as to the amount of data im getting on how to go about doing this. everybody just says search but nothing is as clear cut as it seems.
first i rooted with the oneclick
then i used the viper rom odin with dk17 here
im trying to update to clockworkmod 3 but i think i need dI18 first so i can go to dk28 so i can get cwm3
all this so i can get nebula rom here
all because it says "NEED clockworkmod 2.5.1.2 or higher" i spent hrs trying to find 2.5.1.2 as oneclick root only has 2.5.0.0
btw where is the update.zip's at there should b 1 repository for it

Why don't you just Odin to dk28 then root with cwm3? Its hard to paste where these thongs are using tapatalk. That's prolly the easiest and best way to do it. Once you root and get clockwork mod version 3 and you boot into it , it will convert your filesystem to ext4 and.then you flash.the.rom that you want.

2.5.1.2 is in the thread that had a title like "ext4! no more rfs!!!" in the dev section.
Or get cwm3.

[Q] Trying to ReRoot

I am trying to reroot my epic since some of the newer roms require clockworkmod
2.5.1.2 or higher (I am still using the RFS) and when I get the latest 2.5.5 clockworkmod from download link and root my phone all I am getting is 2.5.1.0 when check root ver. Please where is the REAL lastest clockworkmod.
Don't wont to move to EXT4 and 3.0 yet, all I want is 2.5.1.2

That's where I was getting originally when check ver after all on my phone shows
2.5.1.0 I gonna try again, thanks.
dito33
Tried again, when boot in clockworkmod shows recovery ver 2.5.1.0 is this
the same as the ver of clockworkmod I am confused cuz I put 2.5.5 in there.
dito33
If you don't want ext4.then you have to stay at cwm version 2.5.1.0. The cwm 2.5.1.2 and. 3.0.0.5 are all for ext4

That's answer my question, I was trying to flash nebula rom 1.07 but there was
no word on ext4 so my phone was getting stock on boot I went 3 times refllashing stock I guess going back to 1.06 till figure out ext4.

[Q] stuck with clockworkmod 2.5.

so im new to android. i spent all day figuring out how to root. i used the one click root and instead of getting the 2.5.5 clockwork mod i only get 2.5.1
ive went to advanced>reboot recovery> apply sdcard:update.zip but NOTHING. it freezes. and i dont even think there is a update.zip on my sd card, i used my files and found NOTHING. hell i started to run the 1click root again. if im not mistaken for nebula rom u need dk28 which u can get from odin or from a cwm higher then 2.5.1.2 plz hlp!!! :'(
Moved to Q&A
U mite wanna check out randyshear on youtube he has a link 2 get the new CWM 3.0.0.5 for Ext4 rom
Sent from my Epic 4G
You need to do a lot more reading.
The One-click is version 2.5.5 and includes clockworkmod 2.5.1.0.
The 2.5.1.0->2.5.1.2 conversion is in the ext4 conversion thread.
Clockworkmod 3 is the new and easier way to convert to ext4. It also saves you from needing two different recoveries.
With cwm, you will never use an update.zip. You need to "install zip from sdcard"->"choose zip from sdcard" and make sure the rom is on your card.
And you can use Odin to go to dk28 or use the cwm flashable zip.
^^^^^ exactly what he said. Do more reading. There are tons of posts in here to figure out what's going on.

[Q] Help flashing [ROM]Bonsai4All EXT4/Clockworks 3.0.0.5 support V2.0.1 >02/03/2011
Ok guys, im gonna attempt a flash([ROM]Bonsai4All EXT4/Clockworks 3.0.0.5 support V2.0.1 >02/03/2011) today on my friends samsung epic 4g which is fully stock at the moment, i already have read the instructions but i need a little guidance in the right direction. I have flashed clockworkmodrecovery using
http://http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782300
& http://http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7933592#post7933592
so now i can boot into clockworkmod recovery, but b4 i flash anything im going to do a backup through the clockworkmod recovery, i read in the Bonsai4All thread that i need to "Odin the dk28 modem first", can someone tell me how i can do that, like give me a link to the required files and how i would go about installing them. Also is there anything else that i am not doing that is required to flash to the Bonsai4All ROM from a stock samsung epic 4g , all feedback is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance guys.
This is the Epic wiki. Scroll down to Odin Stock Flashing and follow those instructions. Under Official Roms (just above Odin Stock Flashing) is the dk28 file. It's titled 'SPH-D700-DK28-8Gb-REL.tar.md5 Stock DK28 (Leaked).' That's what you put in Odin to flash to stock dk28. Scroll down further to Community Roms and you will see the Bonsai4All rom. Once you are on stock dk28, have cwm3 installed, and download the Bonsai rom to the SDcard, you can flash Bonsai through cwm.

The wiki says I have to "Select the victory_8G_100528.pit on the right in the pit section" on step number 4, do I have to do that to flash to Bonsai, or do I just do what you told me.

When I flashed to stock dk28 , I used the Victory pit along with the SPH-D700-DK28.tar. So, I would do both.
I have used it without victory BUT I was already on dk28. I had a 2.2 rom and I was flashing back to stock dk28.
So, final answer, for the first time going to dk28, I would use both the pit and tar.
On a side note, make sure only the reset time and auto-reboot check boxed are checked. There shoud be three total check boxes. For the first time, only check those. If you install a rom and want to go back to stock dk28 in the future, then only check auto-reboot.
So basically what you're saying. Is all that I really need to do is substitute the dk28 tar u told me instead of the one used on step 5?

ok, one more question before i begin is, do i backup with clockworkmodrecovery before i flash dk28, or if im correct the flash will delete everything including root, and upgrade the phone to 2.2, so the backup would be irrelevant until b4 i flash the bonasi?

Yes, using flash with ODIN will erase everything including root. So, backup everything before you start. It should backup to your SDcard. When you do the stock flash, root, install cwm3 and flash your 2.2 based rom, you should be able to boot into cwm, go to backup/restore- advanced restore and restore data.
I would install My Backup or something similar before attempting though. Just in case cwm doesn't keep your backup after the flash. It's worked for me in the past. After backup, you can also move the backup file to your computer's hard drive for safekeeping. It's in the root of the sd folder under Clockwork recovery.
thumbs up picking bonsai rom. ive tried midnight, viper, nebula already and none of them even compare to the speeds of bonsai. if your going for speed and no force closes choose bonsai.
to kind of answer your question, always backup, it wont hurt anything.

ok, thanks, i think i got the steps down, after i have this installed, i root it using(insert link and awesome advice here)?
I'm on my phone now so I can't see the links and so forth. I think the bonsai rom will install root, cwm, convert to ext 4 file system and install bonsai. Double check the rom thread though. If not, theres a one-click root w/ cwm3 in the dev section

Question re Clockword Mod Update for Samsung Epic

I tried to post this on the actual thread about this Update, but I was not allowed because I had not posted 10 times previously.
Anyway, I am new to rooting Android phones….new to android phones for that matter. I have had the Samsung Epic 4G for about a month. I have been looking into rooting the phone, finally decided to go for it. I downloaded the filre for Clockwork Mod version 3.0.0.5/6 - UPDATED FOR EB13 from this site. After doing one run of that bat file and getting stuck on the startup screen, I realized I needed to find a compatible ROM and Kernel and install them before rebooting.
I reset the phone to default settings, using the info on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909384 and then I used the kernel
from the original update thread, Default Stock Dual FS kernel For EB13, and the Bonzai ROM from their website. This time, the install worked properly, and when my phone rebooted, the firmware is listed as Bonsai/Kernel_v4.01. So I wanted to backup and uninstall some Samsung Bloatware from the phone, and as I understand it, the Titanium Backup is the best way to do it. Well, I installed it, and it has consistently said the program could not acquire root status. I clicked on the “problems” icon, got busybox and upgraded superuse, and that did not effect anything. I even reflashed the Bonzai Rom, but the end result is the same, I am still getting that same message. Since I have replaced my Rom and have installed Superuser, I have to assume I have rooted the phone, so what could be the problem here? The app SetCPU also says I do not have Root Access. So I am not sure what to do at this point.
Sounds like a failed root:
Root again with the oneclick 3.0.0.6, power off, 3 finger boot and ext4 will be put on automatically. After ext4 installs install bonsai before rebooting.

Is there a difference between onclick 3.0.0.6 and the one in the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=897612,which is labelled 3.0.0.5/6? Because, if not, that is pretty much what I have done already.
Same one.
I would odin to eb13, odin ec05 modem, root, boot to recovery and allow ext4, flash bonsai 4.0.1. Can't remember if 4.0.1 adds ec05 modem during flash, but if it does you can skip the ec05 odin (sorrry, but my mind has been on 4.1.0 for the last week).
The odin process will get rid of the kernel you currently have. Flashing the rom doesn't do anything to the kernel. The odin process will give you a nice clean slate to workv with. If your phone wants to do an ec05 OTA update during this process please tell it later and don't do it.
Suggest you peruse the Bonsai Forum as you will find a lot of treats that will be able to help you. Http://www.bonsaigeeks.com

This exact thing happened to me after trying everything from the EC05 OTA. Just run the bat file again on the phone...nothing else and it will work fine.

Phone won't flash ROM; no clue what to do now.

Okay, I just spent over 6 hours fussing with my phone. I'll try to keep it short and simple.
My phone was running GB 2.3.3. Then a RandomROM HAWK. I was wanting my phone to run EXT4. But, I could not get it to that. When I rooted it with CWM 3.1.0.1, that did not convert the system. Running the RFStoEXT4 zip also did not work.
I just now un-rooted and went back to stock EC05 2.2.1
I then ran CWM 3.0.0.6, which did successfully convert to EXT4.
"FINALLY!", I thought. I wipe data, cache, Dalvik three times. I go to flash a SyndicateROM 1.2, and I get stuck at the Samsung screen.
I've just spent a long time on my phone, and it doesn't help that there are way too many methods to root, unroot, update, flash this, flash that, and it doesn't help that there isn't one simple way to:
Root
Convert to EXT4
Update to Gingerbread 2.3.3/2.3.4
Without going through endless links. That's all I want to do.
I would do more searching however, I've spent enough time on the internet and I really, really need a break. Could someone please help point me in the right direction?
SRF 1.2 doesn't come with a kernel. Upgrade to purple CWM 3.1.0.1 if you haven't yet and flash a kernel and reboot. You should be good after that

Any custom kernel you choose.
Posted by Mr. Z's Epic 4G.
I hate sounding like a pompous jerk but, the OP says in the post that it had no kernel >.< READ MAN READ!!!!
Anyways, to kinda help, Genocide's kernel works perfect with SRF 1.2
here's the link! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=961614&highlight=genocide
I freaked out when I first tried to go to the ACS Frozen 1.2 ROM. I read that it had no kernel, but thought since I had the stock .tar file already flashed I was good to go.. n00b Mistake..
I used the Genocide 2.0 kernel, which I flashed immediately after I flashed ACS Frozen 1.2 and it worked awesome..
are you just wanting to go with EC05 and the ACS frozen 1.2 ROM?
or wanting to go with gingerbread?
If you put a stock or deodexed version of GB on the phone through ODIN, you should be good to go.
What is your end goal?
To get EG22 (2.3.4) on your phone deodexed and rooted with CWM 3.1, go here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1184134
I couldn't get mine to work with Odin 1.85, so I used Odin 1.61 and it worked flawlessly.
I just did this last night, coming from the EC05 ACS frozen 1.2 + Genocide 2.0 combo; so if you need help, let me know
CWM 3.0+ will automatically convert to EXT-4.
FYI, if you end goal is to get GB on your phone, rooted, this will be ONE simple step. You will just ODIN once and when you boot up you will have the following:
EB22 modem
2.3.4
all other stock EB22 stuff
