Text Editor - Windows Phone 7 Development and Hacking

is there a text editor built into the phone somewhere? It would be real nice to be able to read files while in the phone itself , or do you have to be tied to the pc?

You have word in the office hub. You may create new files but syncing with pc is not supported as far as I know. You have to send files from your pc to your phone via email.

Advanced Explorer and TouchXplorer both offer full filesystem access and the ability to open any file for reading/editing in Word (although some files will be write-protected). This generally works fine for plain-text files.

file viewer

is there a way I can see the files on my wp7 or a program to look through what files are on there.
You can use this program called RemoteExecute and execute \Windows\FileBrowser.exe to browse the files.
However you will not be able to open each file, there is another program specific for HTC devices but I don't remember it.
You can also use this webserver to browser the files, a lot of them are readable

Kindle - Sideload eBooks

As some of you might have noticed, the Amazon Kindle App is quite good.
Unfortunately you have to pay for ebooks which are usually available for free on the Internet (e.g.: Programming Windows Phone 7, sold for 22.53$ , available for free on: http://www.charlespetzold.com/phone/).
So I tried to convert it to the used prc format, et voilĂ  it's working.
So here's what you have to do:
Download http://www.mobipocket.com/en/downloadsoft/productdetailscreator.asp or any other Program, capable of converting pdf to prc.
When the conversion is done, apply the registry hack, so that your phone will show up in Windows Explorer. (http://www.mobiletechworld.com/2010/11/18/use-your-windows-phone-7-device-as-a-portable-usb-drive/) Remember to close Zune. Otherwise it won't work.
Copy the newly created *.prc file to your phone. If not already done, install TouchXplorer and go to My Documents\Zune\Content\0400\03 and cut the newly created file (It will be renamed to*.z)
Paste it to Applications\Data\48195FB4-EE0E-9264...\Data\IsolatedStore\kindle
Now rename the file so you will remember the it (e.g. programming.prc).
Start up Kindle and the newly added book should be available.
Let me know if it works for you too.
Works perfectly.... thanks!
Works fine, thanks. However, would be nice if you linked the USB hack in your post. Also, (this confused me at first) the storage doesn't show up if you use WPConnect or have Zune running.
It works fine but the book (i tried the Programming WP7 one too) isn't really readable. The text is all over the place and it's also alot larger than the other books (despite my settings being smallest font possible).
Is there a way to make it more "Phone Friendly"?
does it only support prc format?
edit: nevermind, it supports mobi too apparently
worked ... flawlessly
thanks Bro..
Instead of TouchXplorer, you can use Advanced Explorer - it supports doing this automatically. It can both copy files to your phone from the PC (without the PC registry hack) and can sideload .mobi files for you (or you can use the copy-paste functionality just like in TouchXplorer).
Advanced Explorer for mobile or pc? where i get it? is it work with samsung focus?
It's a homebrew phone app. You can find the link right here on this forum. You ned developer unlock of course, as with all these other options.
Samsung suppport is in progress, but I don't know how far along it is.
Why can't you just email the PDF to your @kindle.com account? That's the standard way of getting free books in PDF format to your Kindle, and then it's available to all your Kindle devices as well. I mean I get following this hack if you want to convert non-PDF files, but for MSWord, PDF and MOBI files it's automatic.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html/ref=hp_k2land_trans?nodeId=200505520
[EDIT] - Following the instructions from Amazon above, I see they give you a download link to the converted file. You still need to copy the file to your Kindle or Phone, so this hack is still valid. However, if you do mail to your @free.kindle.com email address, you can get it in native (.azw) format.

is it possible to have a kindle account without owning a kindle device? because my amazon account is asking a 16-digit serial number

Any file (from any directory) editing in built-in WP7 Office application

Hi friends. My trying to open file from any (not user) directory, or saving to another place as "My Documents" from buit-in pword.exe has still no success. I cannot solve this problem exactly, the I use temporary copy of file to "My Documents" subdirectory, changing file privilegies, and copying edited file to original path. This way is used automaticky in my Phone Commander beta version http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28732620#post28732620 , it is working now on fully unlocked systems only. Write, please, your experience and opinion about using built-in Microsoft Office or another apps to discovering and changing WP7 system parts on device. I plane also GCC and GCS port for WP7 (for really quick and usable on-device programming), but writing own text editor may be too long work. I mean hack of built-in Word to be able do syntax-hilighting etc. may be first simply way. M.
XAML problem
When editing XAML, PWord show everything right, but for saving uses Win 1251 (on my Czech localisation) instead unicode. Then, after editing system apps are not able to read edited XAML files. Exists way to save from PWord in unicode, or is necessary to write own texteditor, or is somebody (Ultrashoot?) able to redesign any good WM texteditor for WP7?

[Q] Colornote app notes to pc

I have the colornote app on my gs3 and regularly use this for notes. It automatically saves your notes to a backup file as a .dat file. This saves to my micro sd card; I have put these files on my Win7 pc yet nothing on my pc can open and view these files. I have tried notepad, wordpad, ms word, internet browsers, etc. When it opens in notepad it is just Chinese characters. I have tried opening the files in notepad and saving as a .doc or .txt and that doesn't work. I have scoured the internet and found no answers. I could easily copy and paste to my email, but I do not want my intellectual property out there (cautious privacy concerns).
So my question is, is there any way I can view these .dat files on my pc, or any way to get my notes on my pc in a different format that will be readable? And if there is no way to do this what other note apps work well that save your notes as a doc or txt?
Thanks for the input.

Export playlists from Sony Music App

I would like to transfer (export) playlists I've made using the Sony Music app, to a new (non-Sony) device.
The playlists are all referencing files in my downloads, which I'll transfer to the new phone as well.
I don't know the format of these files, such as .M3U, .PLS, .XML etc, but if I search for a playlist name with my phone connected to my PC via USB (Internal Storage) - no results are found. I was hoping I could transfer playlist files to the new phone.
Anyone know a way of doing this please?
No?
It can be done... I just copied the Music Center database from my FIIO DAP to my Samsung phone, but it does require effort to change entries in the database to make it work. The database is in SQLite format.
If you're copying the same audio files from phone A to phone B in the same directory structure, it is less of a hassle.
On the source phone there should be a database file - [root]\MusicCenter\metadata.db. Make sure you completely close the Music Center app, then copy this file somewhere on your PC.
Create a temporary playlist on the new device with a couple random tracks and copy it to your PC.
Using something like DB Browser for SQLite, open the database from the new device. Go to Browse Data and select the "storage" table. Copy the data from the "system_storage_uuid" and "app_local_storage_id" fields into a text editor.
Select the "playlist_members" table and note the "storage_uuid" field (it should match one of the entries from the "storage" table).
Close that database file and open the one from your original phone. Change the entries in the "storage" table to match those in the database from the new device. Then select the "playlist_members" table and update the "storage_uuid" for each entry to match as well -- there is a search/replace option in DB Browser for SQLite that can change them all at once. Write the changes and copy the updated database to your new device.
YMMV... but this worked for me.
