Help! Problem while backing up. - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, got a bit of a problem, whilst performing a backup, with Clockwork recovery. I followed the steps listed here http://theunlockr.com/2010/02/06/how-to-backup-and-restore-your-android-phone/ Hit Backup and Restore and my phone has gone to a black screen.
Is this normal or should I start panicking now?

I didn't follow the link but i'm gone guess you used the power button and not the trackpad. just hit it again and use the trackpad form now on in recovery.

Thanks for the quick response man, I was s******g myself
1. Once in recovery mode, simply use the trackball to select the option that says Backup (on different recovery images it says different things but it will say something like backup or Nand backup or Nandroid backup

Guess I mis-interpreted that. I thought it meant to simply use the optical button to scroll to the item. It's running the backup as we speak by the way
Ah bugger... Seems my problems ain't over yet. I selected to reboot and now my phone's gone into a 'reboot loop'. Flashing the HTC logo, which hangs for a few seconds, disappears, then comes back, over and over...

Seems to be an issue with CWM. Restore the backup and it'll work fine

Thanks again EddyOS, seems to be working again now. Restored no problem and rebooted fine.
Any idea where I go from here seeing as CWM doesn't seem to like my phone? Am I still safe to look into flashing a custom rom? That experience has seriously shook my confidence...

Problem only seems to affect the first backup - should be fine from now on. Personally I use AmonRA as my recovery

[Q] Desire doesnt boot anymore/cant start clockwork recovery

Hello,
after i did a nandroid backup, my desire wont boot anymore. The display goes on, showing up some green htc letters but turns off after ~20 secs. After another ~10 secs the display turns on again; this procedure repeats.
I cant get into clockwork recovery (probably because the phone is only for 10 secs off).
Any suggestions what to do?
I am not that much experienced in android development etc :/
Regards, Nick
I had the same problem earlier after i did a ROM manager backup.
What i did:
1. Take off back cover and remove battery and replace
2. Get into HBOOT menu (Hold down volume button and power button)
3. Go to Recovery and recover there to a previous back up
It took me a while to figure this out, hope it works for you (seeing as you used nandroid, but hopefully it wont be too different. Im also new to this.)
Nandroid = backup
They're the same thing done different ways

[Q] Unable to reboot or access recovery!! HELP!!

I am running CM V7.0.3.1
My phone blacked out and the bottom row of buttons remained lit.
The phone was totally unresponsive so I pulled the battery. Reboots left me at the white Evo screen. Eventually the bottom row of buttons will light up and I can hear my text msg notification, but the white screen is still on.
I tried to go into recovery and all it does is attempt to boot me up.
I took the SD card out and place the RA recovery zip on the root of my sd card. It asks if I want to update, and when I do, it asks If I want to reboot. Reboots are the same. I hit no when it asks to reboot and I get the same boot-loader screen options and I get all of the same reactions if i hit any of the options. I have seen similar threads but this one is different than all of them.
Boot to the bootloader (Simultaneously press the DOWN volume button & power button until the device starts), after a short pause, a few lines of text will scroll across the screen. Afterwards, you should see either S-ON or S-OFF at the top of the screen. If it displays S-OFF, then great, but if it displays S-ON then you are no longer rooted. Anyway, assuming it is still S-OFF, on the left side of the screen should be a set of options. Select "recovery". After you've booted into recovery, wipe EVERYTHING in the menu EXCEPT the SD card and then do a nandroid restore of your latest backup. I hope you've made several. If not, get in the habit of doing so once you're back up and running. If you do not have any backups to restore, go ahead and re-flash CM v7. 0.3.1.

On your boot loader try clear storage it will factery reset.
If you want first backup using titanium backup
Then flash rooted stock rom as pc36img.zip in bootloader, then see if that fixes it then just flash back to cm once everything is up and running

It will not go into recovery. I am beginning to believe that my touch screen is just not responding. I believe the phone is acting as if everything is normal but the screen will only show the white screen. Since I am S-off my issue is having a rooted phone that needs to be repaired.
Anyone have suggestions?
{Report it "missing" and use the insurance.........} I didn't say that.

[Q] T-Mobile G2 can't get Clockworkmod to work after downgrade

Hello everyone!
I've been trying to find anything about this issue, but nothing seems to work.
I had OTA 2.3.4 android on my t-mobile g2. So i have decided to downgrade it, to install CyanogenMod.
So I followed this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178912
Everything went fine.
Then rooted it following this guide http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/TMobile_G2:_Rooting
Then this http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Vision:_Radio_and_CyanogenMod to install CyanogenMod, but ClockworkMod doesn't seem to work. When I do Wipe data/factory reset, anything in Clockwork doesn't work. Even reboot or power off. This icon with yellow cirlce with hat on it comes on and does nothing. I waited like 20 mins, still nothing. If I push power button it goes back to clockwork recovery with all these options, but nothing isn't working.
I installed it using Rom manager, so its last version 5.0.2.0 (first i had 3.xx version but it acted the same way).
(oh by the way, i tried update it using OTA update from air, it freezes when HTC logo comes on and does nothing, factory reset is the same way)
I have root and S-OFF.
Please, guys help!!!
Disregard this first stuff, although it is probably a good idea to use a 3.x.x.x recovery anyways atm.
Are you sure that you were unable to use CWM recovery properly when you were on an earlier version like 3.0.2.4? The 5.x.x.x versions are a bit buggy I wouldn't bother with them at this point.
Go into ROM manager, hit menu > settings > 'Erase Recovery' set to ON.
then, go back to the main ROM manger screen, hit 'All ClockworkMod Recoveries' > select '3.0.2.4' > OK.
You will then see a progress bar at the top, and then a message saying you've successfully flashed recovery. Now power off, hold vol. dn + Power and enter the recovery again. Try doing some functions and see if it works.
Don't try and do a factory reset etc. through CWM if it does work though, the first thing you should be doing is going to 'backup and restore' > 'backup' to make a nandroid backup of this current setup. If successful, THEN you can wipe data and try to flash the CM7.zip.
----------
Not sure if you're aware either... You should be using the trackpad to select items in the CWM recovery. Not the power button (turns on/off screen) or menu button (shows/hides menus) or anything. Scroll with the trackpad and press down to select highlighted items with the trackpad. The only 2 buttons you need in CWM recovery for 99.9% of operation is the trackpad and the 'back' button.
----------
Also as an aside, don't try to accept any OTA's or anything. They won't work and may cause issues when you're rooted.
BTW disregard most of my previous post. I'm 99.9% sure you're just hitting the menu button thinking that its selecting things, but the MENU button just hides the menus, it doesn't select. Like I said, use the trackpad to select the menu items!!!
As I said in my previous post though, I want to reiterate: do a nandroid backup before wiping data. Its just a good idea to have your rooted 2.2 ROM as a nandroid backup to return to if something goes wrong with the flash. Just make it easy on yourself and do a backup, THEN wipe data and flash your .zip.
Duh, stupid me! Its working, actually it was working all this time. I was pushing a wrong button, power button. Use a track pad! Dumba**
Thank a lot!
martonikaj +1 thanks!

Of course, glad you figured it out. Be sure to make a nandroid backup before and after flashing CM7 .

[Q] Alternative methods of accessing Recovery?

My Xperia Play has had a few problems out of the box, mainly that when I switch it on there is no boot animation, just a black screen. This means I can't access Recovery through the normal method of holding down on the volume or the back button etc. I've installed CWM through the CWM Xperia installer so I know it's there. I also ran the Auto-Magic Nandroid through that app, which caused my screen to go black (as it does whenever I choose to reboot through an app). When I looked on my SD card though there is now a Nandroid folder, so it's probable that the device does go into Recovery; I just can't see it.
So my question is this; is there any other way of getting my phone into Recovery so I can install some sweet, delicious custom ROMs? Maybe through ADB or similar? Or is it possible to install a ROM via another method?
Any help at all would be appreciated!!
If it wasn't working right right out of the box, I would have sent it back.
Can't you boot into recovery from the CWM-installer app?

Sadly that wasn't an option, it was the only one they had and I wasn't about to send it back for another type of phone, I've wanted this thing for ages
I've just clicked that option in the app and it's just rebooted the phone normally.

Turn on the phone, and when you see the notification light turn blue, press volume down for the locked bootloader cwm, or the back button for the one in DooMKernel.
Sent from a Galaxy far, far away
I've not yet tried installing DooMKernel, I'm worried that if I can't get into the normal recovery in won't be able to get into that one, then I'll be stuck with a boot looping phone.
Pressing down on volume on the blue led comes on doesn't seem to do much, simply stops the boot process from completing fully. I left the phone for 5 mins and got nothing. Pressing the power button again started the boot process again and it loaded up normally (minus any animations of ciurse)
It seems like stuff is happening, but I just can't see it. I doubt this is a hardware fault as the screen works perfectly all other times, so what the heck could it be!?
The recovery in DooMKernel is already built in, so it's different than using the Xperia CWM installer. By the way, the back button will get you into DooMKernel's recovery.
I'll give it a try and see what happens. Thanks for the advice guys!

[Q] Phone stuck in bootloop :/

Well, i wanted to restore my backed up rom, i went to twrp and restored the rom without wiping data, dalvik cache ect. it went to boot loop saying " setup wizard stopped " after reaching lockscreen and went booting again.. then i found a way to go to recovery again, i wiped the cache and stuff and restored the same back up and the same problem now no change, now i cant go inside custom recovery whatever i try.. :/ . will i be able to go to recovery after the battery is drained?
or u know a method to go inside recovery?
Have you tried holding the volume down button down when the screen goes blank? This will get you into the bootloader. You can also hold power and volume up and when the screen goes blank hold volume down only.

How long did you hold it for? You have to hold the buttons for a good ten seconds or so. You're saying the screen never goes black for a few seconds between loops?

thank u, it worked but now when i flash there is no on screen buttons and notifications at all and im stuck with 1 rom :/
the computer does not recognize my device as "on" itself!!
what to do plz help
Connect SD card reader to your computer and use it to put a ROM on removable SD. Insert the SD into the phone, and flash the ROM from recovery.
I also just came over this problem,
I've been using TWRP on all my phones for years and constantly flashing/restoring various roms.
Did I do something wrong?
I backed up using the default options and restored the same way as I always do but I had the same issue.

Make sure you firmware corresponds to the nandroid you are trying to restore.
But if they do match (correct firmware for the ROM being restored) it might just be a random thing. TWRP on this (and other recent devices like my Sammy Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4) seems a little less reliable than in the past. As long as your TWRP version is up to date, there isn't much else you can do. Except maybe keep a few different nandroids (probably on your computer, since they take so much space) in case the most recent one doesn't restore correctly.
Thanks for the reply. I also tried installing the exact same ROM again and set it up, then tried to restore but still the same problem. Thanks anyway I'll maybe try another backup and delete the old one. Thanks again
If you're restoring a ROM through the TWRP restore function make sure you always wipe always wipe data and system before restoring unless you're only restoring data or just system itself. Then only wipe that certain parition. But never restore a backup of another ROM base onto a different base without installing the ROM you are restoring first. That will cause a lot of issues, constant FC, and bootloop.
