Fastboot (Hibernation) works on my phone now, with one of the HD ROMs.
Have a few questions:
1) Will it damage my phone in any way?
2) If I remove battery after hibernating, I must cold boot. Is this normal? Ideally we should be able to remove battery, put it back in and have fastboot....
3) If its something to do with removing battery, will it drain my phone's battery out even when I've hibernated it? How much would that be?
1. No damage is done, as far as I know.
2. It is normal, it is reported on the DHDs, too.
3. It drains the battery, but it is almost next to null.
Blackberries have done it for years... I left one off in my drawer for a week or so and it still powered on... low battery but it had lasted awhile!

Hmm... thanks a ton for the info!
Ofcouse you have to cold boot if you pull the battery. When you hibinate the current state of your device is stored using a portion of the devices ram called the misc partition. Obviously ram is volatile memory so when the batt is pulled the ram is wiped.....

I have android 2.2 and i have questions:
my battery is charged and used for only a couple of hours and sometimes the battery drains in like 4-6 hours. i dont even use it and brightness is always turned low and yet the battery seems to drain really fast.
second thing is when i pull out my battery to charge it my gadgets and aps start to malfunction and i have to go hit up the market to redownload all the apps and start all fr scratch. so now i'm backing up some of the info that the programs let me
most of the apps i use or just like skype twitter facebook and whatnot just the basics but somehow it keeps malfunctioning after i charge the battery its like doing a hard reset.
whats going on?

Why are you pulling out the battery to charge it?
What rom and kernel are you running?
android 2.2
kernel v. 2.6.32.17-g9a2fc16
baseband v. 2.15.00.07.28
if you need anymore info i can give you no problems. it was just flashed or whatever to 2.2 i didn't do it myself i just got this phone like last week
For the battery draining issue its best to figure that out yourself using something like systempanel by nextapp. Buying it is worth it as you will be able to analyze what exactly is using up your battery. Nobody can tell you what really is draining your battery but you.
As for the pulling out the battery issue... are you powering down before you pull out the battery?

Also... it might be possible that your battery draining is normal. The Inc came with a 1300mah battery which is ridiculous for a smartphone. Grab the 1500mah HTC OEM battery and it will be like any other smartphone.
Fits in the stock battery door too.

yes. if i dont is that what is causing all my programs to malfunction?
does anyone suggest me flash to another rom i might need a bigger SD card too
i have 2 1800MAH or possibe 1500 and an 1800MAH

Hmm... no you should be powering down first. Weird.
Are you rooted? Flash another ROM.
A bigger SD card is always nice...
I'm confused ... you already have bigger batteries? And not using it?
Sent from my ADR6300
i change out the batteries when the other one is running low.
i think i'm rooted. i have superuser permissions
yes a bigger SD card is a good idea. dont the roms go on SD cards?
It seems like something has gotten messed up along the way. I would go back completely to stock and start over. A problem like that sounds very weird.
The size of an SD card should not matter. You download the ROM and flash it. After you flash it you can delete the ROM on your SD card.
Yes.... if nothing works just go back to stock and work up from there.
Sent from my ADR6300
alright i'll get workin on it thanks. does anyone recommend a rom?
I would honestly use virtuous first as it's closest to stock and should be the most stable. Try to use just the ROM as is for at least a few hours or day to see if the problems still are occurring. If they are... time to start from scratch.
cyanogenmod 7 or lou's senseless. unless you are into sense then i don't know what you'd want
the only reason i think its suck the life out of my battery is all the constant updates. luckily i have 2 but then it takes like hours for the other one to charge. killing my battery faster than i can charge it -_-

That doesn't sound right ... I definitely recommend systempanel if flashing a new ROM doesn't work and after a ruu.

Hi. I just got an idea about turning phone off when battery is drained.. why has the phone to turn off??? why he can't hibernate? turning on from hibernate is much faster i am sure that some dev know how to do it. I don't. and devs should import that script into their Sense HD roms.

I get where you are coming from but even in hibernate mode the phone would use a little battery power to keep everything "ready to use" again once the phone comes out of hibernation - the small amount used would drain the battery further than it was designed to go safely and if you didn't catch it in time and your battery completely ran out of power -pop- dead battery with no recharge. Good idea but not really safe to do without having some spare batteries on hand

Thank you for explanation. i didn't know that if you drain your battery in hibernation, you actually kill that battery. what a shame, but i think, i can live with turning phone off with drained battery..
Your confusing suspend with hibernate, suspend would would drain battery(if the hardware supported it), hibernate wouldn't.
To suspend a device just enough power is used to keep the data stored in ram there( its lost on power off). In hibernation ram would be stored to sdcard, then the device is powered off, then restored on bootup.
Desire has about 500mb of ram, with a class 2 memory card it would take about 4 minutes (2mins for class 4) to restore on boot...ie not worth it.

Just a note. My battery run out a few days back and when I put it on the charger it boot up like in 5 seconds. Using insertcoin 1.9.1

In addition, the SD card would need to stay powered on to achieve cell refresh, as well as its controller and the power management IC on the SoC, so they'll still be drawing power. The CPU won't be able to shut down, only stay in a very low power mode with some of its cache banks still active. I don't know about the GPU/RAM. I don't think it would be suitable technically speaking (although the idea sounds beneficial).

During the night my phone over a period of 6 hours, lost 3% without using any battery, with wifi, gps, data synchronization and automatic everything off. This autonomy is normal? For other devices I had, like the Galaxy and S remained the same with no loss of load in the same situation.
I'm using the rom CoreDroid 6.6, kernel 3.1.2 and Lee 12.54.60.25U_26.09.04.11_M2 Radio.
I thank you all.
It's normal, as long as the phone is is on you will lose some charge. Only 3% might be considered quite good actually.
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using XDA App
If I change rom or kernel I get improvements?
As I said, 3% is quite good so there's not much room for improvement. The phone can't be on without using any power.
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using XDA App
I understand, but as informed, on other devices, I have not had any loss at night, as was the case with Samsung S Galaxy, and got change for this new rom in your case and discharge the battery of your device in the same situation?
Well the SGS is a different phone. The DHD is a more powerful phone and thus uses more battery. The battery capacity isn't the greatest either (1230mAh) and thus it will lose charge faster. 3% drop in 6 hours is nothing to worry about.
Hawks556 Okay, thank you for the information, I'm certainly more relaxed in knowing that this is normal, anyway I will test other rom and kernel and then post the results here.
Allright, but remember to calibrate the battery everytime you flash a new rom and let the rom/kernel settle for a couple of complete battery cycles before comparing.
My battery has been depleting at a very rapid rate and am wondering if it's normal or something I can do on my end to fix. For example, I made a phone call and left a voicemail and the battery went down about 3%. I was thinking of just buying a replacement battery, but if there is something I can do to try and fix the current one, I'm open to that.
Thanks!

Depending on your reception (and length of call/voicemail), that could be quite normal. There are other factors as well; is this a new phone? Have you recently flashed a new ROM, restored a backup or done a factory reset?

I just checked my phone since I posted the initial thread and it went down another 8%?! It definitely didn't used to be like this. The phone isn't new, it's about 14 months old. And yes I did recently root my phone and flash CM7 on it, but I thought it would have improved the battery life, not make it worse!
Let me know if any other info is needed, thanks!
Using the phone in the same location (like work or home) as you previously used the phone? Reception is often tied to location. I get rapid battery drain when in poor reception areas.
How long ago did you flash the ROM? You should cycle the battery from full charged (100%) to about 20% (but not empty) and repeat this a couple times in order to properly calibrate the battery meter. This needs to be done every time you flash a new ROM, in order for battery readings to be accurate. You can also clear the battery stats before you do this, to make sure any previous data is not screwing up the calibration.

As redpoint stated, you need to cycle a few times after flashing a new ROM.
Let's say your battery was at 60% when you flashed CM, the ROM is basically going to think that 60% is as full as it gets; after a few cycles, the ROM will "learn" your battery.
Additionally, there are so many tweaks one can do with CM that you can actually kill you battery faster if you max everything out (overclock all the way, turn on all the eyecandy, etc.)

Check your parameters, set OC profiles in order to optimize energy consumption, also as said upper calibrate battery meter and then see how your battery holds, i don't think it's a physical defection because hardware is well made but you never know so do this and then we'll see.
download battery monitor widget from market and track the history and usage statistics, that will give you a starting point to trace the issue. as a reference, my DZ running miui and cm7 kernel is using roughly 26-29 mah with screen off

I'd suggest flashing a new kernel for better battery life if all else fails.
Currently I'm running EliteMod's kernel, U flash it just like you would a rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1246682
I've been getting some bad battery life but not nearly as bad as you have.
I suggest fiddling with SetCPU or turning off all your usual wireless services like Wi-Fi, 3G and GPS
I bet the problem is that you got sync on! That NAILS AND KILLS BATTERY FAST!
Here you new gameplan.
Step 1: Download battery dr.
Step 2: Shut off all sync (manually sync when you need email updates etc.)
Step 3: buy 2 backup batteries from Ebay for cheap
Step 4: Shut off volume vibrate on keypress, shut off all animations, shut off volume noise on keypress, turn screen of from inactivity to 15 seconds.
That should help. Let me know your results.
hey......friends my desire always shuts down at 40% of battery when I fully(100) charge it.....I want to know that if it is a battery problem or phone defect?

If it's still the original battery, it's very likely due to battery aging
You can try to properly calibrate the battery (NOT by wiping the battery stats), there is a proper method which is supposed to work. But this doesn't give it extra live, just tries to reset the readings so it displays correctly. It will simply appear to drain faster, but hopefully shut down closer to 0%
My advice would be to buy a new battery, make sure it is an official one or from a reputable seller with good reviews.
thanks dude.....i will try changing battery if it works
