Hi everyone.
I have a question: How do I programmatically turn the screen off without sending the phone to sleep?
I don't want to clean the screen (making it black). I want to turn it off completely without putting the device in sleep mode...
Do someone know how to do it?
(Basically I need to do the same that happens in the phone program when, during a call, the proximity sensor detects a near object: the screen is completely turned off while mantaining the phone awake)
Thank you all.
Additional informations:
I need an API that is documented (undocumented one like setScreenState will be deprecated) and that will work with DHD (for example requesting a PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK, as specified in Android SDK, doesn't work)

NO it IS a Q, and you should look at the TASKER app

the development secton isnt for questions of any kind.... thats what general and q&a is for. develoment is for roms and dev projects only
So, LinoX... did you find a solution? I want to do the same, but I haven't found a solution so far.
No solutions yet.
The closest think is a partial_wakelock... but I'm not sure if it is what you are searching for...

If you have any questions that may be development related please post them in here instead of making a new thread. Me and hopefully others will try to answer your question to the best of your abilities. Plus it saves me from moving a few hundred threads a day

Where is the best place to learn Linux Kernel Development, or more specifically, Android Kernel Development (if there's any major differences in the two).
I have a slight Computer Science background from being self-taught in basic C programs, an understanding for Object Oriented Programming, and also learning Java throughout school.
I've heard that http://kernelnewbies.org/ is good as well as the standard www.kernel.com website to grab the latest kernel and start tinkering.

Well im not sure of your question, but you can set profiles in SetCPU so that when your screen goes off it can slow the clock down
[Q] Is the G2 capable of Screen Sharing/DLNA
I love my G2, but one feature that I wish the it incorporated is the DLNA screen sharing feature that the MyTouch 4g is touting. Does anyone know if this is something that's possible on the G2?
wrong forum!
i have to ask only because im clueless, wtf is DLNA screen sharing?
thanx, veritas

My understanding of it is this, it's the ability to stream content directly from your phone to a DLNA compliant device, kind of like a networked media storage device would do. It can be a substitute for TV out in some cases. I have some movies (home movies, photos, etc) that I just recorded on my G2 and want to watch them on my TV. Well, my PS3 is DLNA compliant and I would stream these movies through my PS3. If anyone else has anything to add or wants to correct anything that I may have misstated please do.
How can I enable the long-hold action for the Menu button that pops up the on-screen keyboard?
While I am foaming at the mouth to know how to make my g2 dlna, i have a far moar simple question.
Just need some help starting an app.. such as setcpu from visionary.sh.
I know i can set it from app to start on boot, but have run into it not having su permission at that point. yes I am a script or cmd line no0b but any help would be appreciated.

I feel that's a bit more specific question to be asked in the visionARY app thread located: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=808514

In regards to my posting, is there a decent Guide or Bible that has the various complexities of the Android Kernel?
What is QMI, What is Fastboot, all these types of important Acronyms and Terms that are not known to the general joe schmoe.
Thanks

Your answer to my question was sooo unhelpful. Read that thread my question is posted there, and it has gone unanswered. I have also read most of the threads in general, app, and have done a search with no real clear answer.
So now you can either help me or give me some moar useless links.

Take a look at this thread. Should help you get through it easily.
to tell you the truth i was afraid to root my cliq because i didnt want to brick the phone, so no i havent temp rooted yet. i have the new ota. with the temp root if i shut my my off or it dies will it revert back to stoc because of the backup installed
edit. i downloaded visionary about 5 minutes ago so i did the 1 click root.
First off, its not a backup. Secondly, if you reboot you'll clear the cache and will have to re-root. Its temp, so you won't brick your phone.

You sir need to find the correct section. It's called Q and A. This section is development, for those that have developed something to post new topics. And you also might want to look into the iPhone 5. Sounds like that might be the more user-friendly type of device you need.

I've got to agree with Aevia here. You were neither very helpful, nor very kind in your response. It's responses like this that are the worst thing about the xda community.
So for everyone using Jellybean stock, there is a bug in the lock screen, it allows bypassing without a password.
Most notably, if your phone is locked with auto rotation on (auto rotation seems to make it easier to do this) and rotate your screen to landscape mode. Click on emergency dialer and then the contact button. Hit home and then immediately power. If done correctly you have full access to the phone when you hit power again.
Lookout has tried to address this bug; however, their "fix" actually makes it easier to break in. By foregrounding the contact list it removes some needed steps to attempt to break in again. It can take several attempts to get the timing down. Once you see the home screen mash the home button to suppress their fix.
Keep your devices close to you. This is an especially nasty bug.

Searching for "lock screen bug" doesn't show a thread on the first couple of pages, it doesn't appear to be sticky or even part of the recent posts, so let me ask, where is said post?
And does it contain the fact that Lookout doesn't work?

Lol... that's cos the thread above does not have tags mentioned in it. A search is optimized based on tags attached to it normally. Anyways, its cool cos your thread is in AT&T section while the other one was in International S3.

And I guess that answers your question as to why we needed another thread. The other threads are not easily found. I expect that this thread will end up in the heap with the rest of them.
When the title of a thread basically matches the search term, I'd expect it to show up, regardless of tags. Or am I expecting too much?

Hey guy's I recently got the XAV-701HD mirrorlink unit for my truck. The driveLink app is beyond horrible. I read a post from a guy on the reviews section. Here it is
It's a shame that a developer outside of Samsung had to modify this app to make it what it should have been. If anyone reads this review, please know that their is a modified version of drive link. I currently have it on my phone and it works great on my Sony XAV-701HD head unit. I am able to use Pandora and all apps including Netflix. I can load all shortcuts to my home screen and they stay, the annoying warning message is removed, and the app works flawlessly and it is still in development with users reading at xda developers. Make sure your head unit is up to date on the firmware, if you want apps to work while driving, the unit must have the video bypass simply by grounding your parking brake wire. Once you uninstall Samsung's crappy version and install the new version, you will see a whole new world on your unit. I recommend installing button saviour to your phone and using Nova Launcher. Check out all of the videos on YouTube. I am now a happy camper but not with Samsung.
He raves about how awesome this app is but doesnt tell anywhere the damn name or where it is. Does anyone know this and can direct me to where it is? I need it asap. THANKS
I think I found a thread dedicated to it here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1951960&page=17
But I cant post in it. I just need to know where and how to download the modified version, and Do I need to have my phone cracked or unlocked or what have you? Id rather not do that. someone let me know.

I think what they mean is that it will just kill your signal while in use, but not permanently
And I don't know much else about the specifics, let me help you rack up some quick 10 posts here and then you can go ask in that thread

It's too limit the amount of spam by some new users. They tend to post in the dev section when they shouldn't, making question threads or things that should go in general
So that's where that rule comes from
Anyway, everything else good? Latest modem and all?
Hi there, I come to you with a huge request for help. First of all, I'm not a developer, but I know how to google hehe, so I've done my research before opening a thread, I promise!
This morning, my phone wouldn't turn on. I charged it and did the usual (pressing power button, etc etc) but all I get is a vibration and LED, but the screen is totally black and dead.
I've found this bible but A) I don't have windows B) wow, it looks quite complicated for an ignorant like me (at this topic)
Would you guys know if there's a Macintosh version of the process, so I could at least try?
Unfortunately, I just moved to a new country and have not many friends, let alone DEVELOPERS friends hehe.
Thanks a lot in advance

There seems to be a workaround though it may involve a lot of work. See this: https://www.reddit.com/r/oneplus/comments/34ku0o/urgent_hard_brick_with_a_mac/
