I recently bought a g1 with android 1.6 and ive tried rooting it with z4 and universal androot and when i try to run clockwork rom manager i get " an error occured while trying to run privileged commands." All i really want to do is get wifi tethering. Can anyone help?
Have you had a look in the G1 forum to see what other people are using? If it's a 1-click method you are going for there's always SuperOneClick. I've not seen anything mentioned that rules it out and there's no harm in trying!
"Androot is not recommended for the Dream because of issues specific to the Dream and ClockworkMod Recovery"... quoted from the wiki found HERE.
THIS looks like a good guide.

I'm a noob at Android hacking and wanted to root my evo After a few questions to one of my friends, he pointed me towards unrevoked3. Now am stuckand don't now how to unlock the NAND and its driving me crazy. I want to be able to use roms such as damage control. Please help. Im compleatly lost.
I would ask your friend, don't think many here use unrevoked, we used the complete method from toast.
Also read through the posts in the Dev wiki.
I just rooted and unlocked last night...had a few issues. Should be around most of the evening. Where are you and what did you do?
Last night I used that unrEVOked3.1 software and then moved on to unlocking. You will need to ADB installed to do it the way I did it. This is a component of the Andoroid SDK. (You can find that from the google android site.) It is complicated and I got through it because I am old enough to have actually worked in DOS back when there were dinosaurs.
It's not impossible, there are instructions out there...but it will take effort. Hate to point you away from xda...'cause LOTs of good work here...but I followed the unlockr.com tutorial for unlocking nand.
http://theunlockr.com/2010/07/20/how-to-unlock-nand-on-the-htc-evo-4g/
There were a couple issues where su couldn't find the sdcard. I even did lists and saw it, but the commands failed at start. Took a mix of unplugging usb and replugging and mounting and just charging....not sure what fixed it...LOL. But I got the commands to run eventually.

You can use Rom Manager app to install CM7. In fact Rom Manager is included in CM7 Rom. Honestly I think Rom Manager was made mostly for CM Roms. Make sure you wipe data, cache and davlik before going to CM from another Rom. I never flash through Rom Manager app and always flash manually from recovery, but a lot of people do flash through Rom Manager. Good Luck.
Also just to clarify(someone correct me if I'm wrong),
I think if you used the unrevoked3 app from this thread Unrevoked to root your EVO that it also nand unlocks it too. The thread doesn't state it, but the app has been updated to work with the latest hboot, so it should work on all Evo's right now. I could be wrong, but I have used the latest Unrevoked to root all of the Evo's that I have rooted and have never had any problems with backups, restores and flashing Rom's.
and i got titanium back up for my apps but not sure how to use it i got idea of hot to use it and how can tell if my nand is unlocked or not

power off your phone then go into bootloader using power+vol. down..if you see s-off at the top the youre unlocked
If you are s-off, but still having problems with some root apps, you need to install busybox. You can do this from the "problems?" button in the bottom right of the overview screen in Titanium Backup. Then choose "get busybox".

I noticed theres about 3 differrent methods to root it..
If anyone has used these methods and can tell me which was more user friendly I would eternaly greatful, of course i prefer a "1-click-root" method but i dont think that exsists does it?
thanx in advance..
i have tried two methods, exploid was the most straight forward and easiest. cm6 does not yet support bluetooth.

One click method? Never seen that for the slide. I used Eugenes method to root which is in the slide Rom bible and so far I've been able to root all 3 slides Ive ended up with very easily. You will have to use command prompt on ur computer but if u watch the video its really not hard at all. This is my.first android phone and it was simple for me so try it out an let us know.

go with exploid
I agree with whgarner, I used the exploid method and that was fast and efficient
I used this method and strongly recommend it: HTC Slide root guide from cyanogenmod
The guide assumes that you have already setup Android SDK on your computer and that you have installed the correct drivers for your phone so if you have'nt done that already you will need to, as all the methods I have seen so far for the Slide require ADB. Lemme know if you got any questions.

First off thanks for your response,
Im assuming that this guide works with the latest OTA.. btw can you contact me on gtalk? [email protected] (for quick response support) i just wanna make sure my wife gets her phone back asap. That way if i hit any walls i can get over them quickly and efficiently..
thanks again..
Apparently people have rooted and installed all kinds of ROMs on the myTouch 3G Slide.
I have one and I have completey uterly failed to understand a darn thing from all the different root instructions I have found.
Can one of you fine gentlemen who owns this exact device tell me exactly how you rooted and installed any basic ROM with Android 2.2 or 2.3 on this device?
Please keep in mind I am a complete Android n00b. I am not tech-illeterate, just never tried anything like this before and all the instructions I found are baffling and sound like they're written for an Android developer/hacker guy.
So give me the simplest plainest easiest way to do this...please!
for rooting, go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=954725 this does almost everything for you, you just have to do a few things here and there. but hey, it tells you what to do.
advice: don't do ANYTHING on your computer until you're done rooting your phone, you might accidentally cancel something you shouldn't have.
for flashing rom, go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=921931
and find the part where it talks about flashing stuff.
to get the clockwork they're talking about, download ROM Manager from the market and the press the option of Flash ClockworkMod Recovery, then move on with the instruction.
I have a T-mobile G2.
I am not really a n00b to rooting and such. I had modded my former G1 without issue.
I had permanent root via Visionary back in December and never went the next step to turn S-off. Now I am really wanting to try out some new roms and want S-OFF.
I have tried following the guide Here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928160 but have not had any luck.
I have even gone back and unrooted the phone and tried the original rom as well as the OTA and I never get a S-OFF. I never have any errors and always come out with Root access.
I went through page after page of that thread and couldn't find anything similar to my issue.
Anything I could be doing wrong? Any good steps for me to take next?
You could try this guide, which never fails. Since you're a veteran with the G1 hopefully you're familiar with adb

Yep, when in doubt (or even when you don't doubt), go to the wiki; the wiki guide was developed by the devs who cracked the device and is considered the safest; just watch out for typos!

First let me state I'm brand new to the Dinc. I have a Rezound but recently got my hands on a Dinc and I want to start trying to develop simple Roms with it, I do have some questions though.
What recovery works best with the Dinc? I've heard some talk about CWM, but over on the Rezound I've only heard of problems with CWM which is why the Rezound mainly uses Amon Ra. Would I be able to flash Amon Ra recovery on the Dinc since I am familiar with it?
Also what is the state of jelly bean on the Dinc (either 4.1 or 4.2) I've read some of the Rom posts and read the bugs list, but is their anything else that isn't fully working, for example on the Rezound project butter isn't fully functional and it's not listed in the bugs list, just wondering if there's anything like that.
And finally is the current method to root and unlock the Dinc on GB to unlock via HTC dev? Because when I checked the htcdev.com I couldn't find the original Dinc on the list of supported devices.
I apologize for the long post I just want to get some background info before I dive into the phone. Thanks in advance

You have a choice of cwm, amon, or twrp. I dont think anyone really uses amon to much on the inc, but it is available, and does work. Cwm is the most popular, but a lot of people are switching to twrp now. I have used cwm since the begining, and have never had any issues with it. Most people who have issues with it is because they use the rom manager app to try to flash things. It is always best to reboot to recovery to do your flashing.
I dont think butter works on the inc. I know at one point people were working on it, but i dont think they ever got it working right. Could be wrong about that though, mabey someone else will chime in. I tried jb, but not for long, so im not up to date on jb development.
Yes the current method for rooting gb is to htcdev unlock your bootloader. I just checked the site, and HTC Droid Incredible* is on the list. You can find rooting guides here on xda, either scottys http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1600904 or mine http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1506258. They both achieve thr same thing in the same way, just written up a little differently.

Thank you for the response! I plan to use your guide when I have some free time tonight to get my phone up to date with android 4.2
FYI
There is another touch recovery for the DINC called "Cannibal Open Touch". I don't know much about it as I haven't used it yet & have not found any discussion about it in the DINC forums. It claims to work with goo manager & I plan to try it soon.
You should be able to find it by searching HTC Droid Incredible & [Recovery] Cannibal Open Touch v2.1. I believe they also have their own web site.
Just an update to my previous post.
I've tried the OpenCanibalTouch recovery on my Incredible and it's not working correctly yet. It does not flash roms or nandroids correctly and you will be stuck in recovery until you use fastboot or hboot to reinstall another recovery.
