[Q] 32GB SD Card Slow - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
Bought a SD card from the bay and it arrived all good and well but after a few days started crashing my phone as i didn't know what it was i sent my phone to HTC got it re-flashed by them and sent back put the SC card back in then i got the message of copy written card , Which was odd , got past that now so now its accepting files but very slowly Currently transferring 4.04GB @ 81KB/s According to windows but its going to take an estimated 15 hrs , Its been transferring for 1 Hr now and no where near finished , Any ideas Its a FAT32 card , I try format it to NTSC but wont format there just hangs then the phone reformats it to Fat32
Any ideas to speed it up ?

It can only be FAT32. Run a hard drive benchmark like CrystalDisk Mark and see what speeds you get. Make sure you at least run the sequential test. Sounds like you really got a dodgey card though.

You should really run h2testw. Flash memory cards from eBay are often fakes, so make sure you test it out so you don't miss out on a refund.
EDIT: "...the bay..." -- I'm guessing you meant eBay? Either way, you ought to test it.

yeah you got it right mate , Yeah ill run some benches i think it is a fake as i got an email sent to me via ebay saying i had been involved in fraudulent activity's , so i passed it off as the card was working then ,
But yeah just passed 4GB over to it , From last night at about 10 PM To Now 8.50AM its still got 7 Hrs remaining ,

How do you transfer? Cardreader? usb cable?
I read that some older cardreaders having problems with SDhc cards bigger than 16 gb. It's for those readers that connect via usb.

Yeah, try running the test. It might takes ages, but it is the only proper way to find out if you've been sold a fake card. Most of the times you won't have to run the whole test as it might start picking up fake memory locations after the 2GB or 4GB mark, so anything after that will be fake too.

Also noticed when i plug it into the pc , through the phone i get the scan and fix , from windows so just done that and tried to recover any bad sectors might help then ill go through and bench it again but like i said earlier it just didn't start and then the program wouldn't respond

Recovering any lost sectors wouldn't help if the card is fake.
A fake card is one where they make the card in such a way so that it appears as some X size, however in fact it is physically it will be only 2/4/Y GB big and the rest is just faked through some kind of trickery. No method will give you those lost GB, as they physically are not even there (can't make something out of nothing, right).
Anyway, good luck with the test.

What happened to popping to the shops? /sigh at the digital age. I don't get why people buy such garbage on eBay because quite a few times this week I have seen people buy stuff from eBay and it's been fake.

Quick update thanks for all the advice guys , but i think i have resolved my problem the phone was slowing my transfers down ,
so i went to ebay and got a SD to USB for 11P and its transferring much faster now brought the time down from 12 Hrs to transfer 4 GB to 1 Hr to transfer 5 GB Which is Brilliant !

My Sandisk 16 gb card stoped working too one day. I couldn't read it anymore neither on my HTC TP2 nor my desktops. It was replaced by the shop according to my waranty. The new one works fIne.
I had the same issue, then it couldn't be read or even formatted on any computer at home or work, I even had my Hospital's IT department check it out. But then I found this software and it found and reformatted my 16gb so that it was not trashed, and i haven't had a problem with the card in over a year. I hope this helps.

[Q] SD Card Issues

I've had my EVO since launch day and I'm now on my second SD card that's having issues. The first was a transcend, 8gb class 6, and it refused to be recognized after about 2-3 months. I then switched to a A-Data, 8gb class 6, that I'm currently using and the last week or so it mounts as read only. That's about 3 months per card which seemed pretty terrible. I was wondering if others have had similar issues. If it might be the the fact that the card is below the battery and overheating. Or if I just happen to buy crap cards. I'm wondering this because I want a 32gb card I don't want to spend a bunch on a new card and have it die after 3 months again.

Been there, done that. It happens when you disconnect the usb cord before switching back to charge only. You need to see it say in the taskbar "preparing sd card" before you disconnect. Good news is it's an easy fix. Plug your usb cord in and connect to computer. Set it to Disk Drive in your Notification panel. On your computer, open the Computer panel, then right click on the drive that is now your phone and click Properties, then Tools and then Check for errors. Allow it to correct errors if found and when it has finished, be sure to go into your phone's notification panel and change your usb connection to Charge Only and wait to see the words "Preparing SD card" in your task bar before disconnecting the cord from your phone. Hope that helps.

I tried this already, when switching to USB storage, it's not being identified by my computer. I don't have a card reader in my computer but I'm going to a friends tomorrow that does so I'll try it in there and see if I can check for errors.
76 views and only 1 response, I can only assume that I just bought **** cards because it doesn't seem like other people are having issues. Next time I guess I'll bite the bullet and go with SanDisk, hopefully those will last longer.
Are you using a2sd? I was having the same issue and after removing a2sd everything started working perfectly.

No, not using a2sd.

I've also been having issues with the SD card in a different area.
I always listen to music on my phone, and 50% of the time it says "failed to read file" when it tries to play. I try to unmount and remount to fix it , but then it always says "blank sd card" when it remounts. The other half the time the music plays fine, but this problem is so annoying because a reboot will only fix it, and even then that has not worked before.
This happens on all ROMs I've tried (CM6, Myn, and baked snack) with all music players using the stock card from sprint.
on my third card ,2 sandisk, now on pnc ,i think. anyway I think its over heating . one time it was charging from oklahoma to dallas , unplugged went to music ,nothing there, fried.
the other was running gps for almost 3 hours ,battery died ,phone was hotter than hell , powerd back up and you guessed it fried.
tried in pc and it never recognized. Learned lesson backed up evo almost once a week on pc. will see how #3 gets fried.
Still love my evo, thank goodness best buy always replaces for free

Interesting, I thought it might have to do with an overheating issue. I still have the 8gb class 2 SanDisk that came with the phone, I've never used it. I'm going to give that a shot and see how long it lasts. It could be that I had lower quality cards. Regardless of the brand, most memory chips inside SD cards come from the same place, usually Samsung. Therefore, brand shouldn't matter all that much. We'll see, I'll throw the 8gb that came with it in and see how long that one lasts.
I did find it interesting that you said Best Buy replaces it for free. I bought mine at Radio Shack but I have the insurance through Sprint. I wonder if Sprint would replace dead cards.

Is my phone killing my memory card(s)?

Ok so i had a 32gb card and it started failing on my phone, it would work sometimes or ask me to format it, sometimes it would work fine so i assumed it was about to die soon so i was able to back everything up,.
Bought a new 64gb sandisk card, the one suggested from the accessories list...well i've been using it for about a week now and it just died on me today.
doesn't even get detected...
i never formatted, it, read that this phone could support it right away...well now nothing works and i've lost everything....again!!!
this is really frustrating...i've lost some major saved games and it's depressing
could it be the phone...or was it just a bad card
i've used the original charger and battery at all times...
any clues?

Look for File Restore Plus software. it will retrieve all of your lost files in your micro SD card. this happened to me a few times but this software saved my butt!
I may be wrong here but I seem to remember some people having issues withe the 64gb cards. Search around and youll probably find something.
Also check www.sdcard.org for more info on the sdxc cards and a sd formating tool that may help.

External SD card disappeared...

So I woke up this morning, phone says SD card unplugged, please insert new...knowing that I obviously did not remove my external sd card I then proceed to check
Settings, Storage --> (nothing shows up)
Boot into recovery --> can't mount external SD card
plug it into PC --> nothing shows up
So now the question is, do I have a bad/dead micro SD card or else?
I am on CM10 which is updated nightly, that might have something to do with the SD card, I dont know.
Edit-- missed where you said you already tried directly from computer.
Might just be a dead card.
Unless it is just not being assigned a drive letter on the pc, the card is toast. If you are using windows you can got to the disk management snap in from the administrative tools and see if it is listed at all, if it doesn't show there it is fubar. Easiest way to get there is right click computer, manage, disk management. For linux or mac im sure there is a similar tool but i couldn't tell how to get there or use it.
Which recovery do you have? Same thing happened to me on 6.0.1.4 Touch. Computer still saw the card, so i pulled everything off the card, reformatted with the computer, then changed recovery. Phone saw it after that and no more problems since.

Thats just the nature of flash memory, eventually it does go bad and unlike mechanical drives which often give plenty of warning of impending failure flash rarely does. Granted 2 months is obviously not acceptable it could be just a freak thing or maybe just an inferior brand. It is also highly susceptible to static discharge, especially in a SD card type format where the pins are exposed. Although possible, i doubt a static shock happened inside the phone but it could have possibly been damaged and just took a while to completely fail.
I used this to format my 64gig chip

Get a new card...i would also check on any warranty offered by the manufacturer, that goes for OP too. Depending on the brand there may be a 1 year or even lifetime warranty, some of the lesser brands might not have a warranty at all. Although i haven't followed my own advice in this category as the last 2 16 GB micro SD's i've purchased have been fairly cheap class 10's, you more often than not get what you pay for. I would also recommend going for the class 10 cards, not only do they have the fastest transfer speeds (and maybe because of this) they seem to be more reliable then their slower cousins.

Although i've never had one of their SD's, Kingston is one of the top tier memory companies and carry lifetime warranties on most (if not all) of their products. At the very least i would expect a year.

In my experience SanDisk is considered a cheapo brand but they have been around long enough to have overcome that reputation. I would imagine they also have a warranty program although i can't speak from personal experience, definitely worth checking into.

I don't think SanDisk is a cheapo brand since they have been making great cards for a long time. They have a great warranty program. They will replace anything within a year for sure. I had one that you couldn't read the serial number on so they still replaced it.
SanDisk has a problem by being the most well known microsd, they are faked by chinese companies all the time and those fakes look just like the real ones. Therefore, you buy a fake, paying real prices, that looks real, and you blame SanDisk. I think that was what happened in my experience with a dead card, and they still replaced it.

You can't just format it from "My Computer". You will have to go into device manager and find it, then format it that way. Otherwise it will not work.

Never heard of the brand of SD Card you're using.
My guess, since it's brand new, it's defective at best.
I'd return it for a refund & get a better known brand such as SanDisk or Samsung.
My guess is that you have a faulty SD card. I would return it if I were you or get a new one. Cheap SD cards malfunction often. I've been a victim myself. That's why I only buy reputable names from sources that will accept returns if damaged. I've lost precious memories due to this issue.

A hard reset (OS reload) of the phone effectively addresses viruses, trojans and old OS loads but little else.
Many times the same settings issue remains to be toggled or triggered again.
Find and address the core issue directly.
•Clean card contacts with a tissue and 97% isopropyl alcohol.
•Do a low level format on card if this doesn't resolve the issue, replace the card.
This card works perfectly out of the box:

One of lifes mysteries, but now gone back to Amazon for my £28 refund, and hopefully no more hassle.

Thanks for replies, i actually reset phone and card again this morning
thought i fixed the fault, but after 2 hours it came back!
So back to Amazon ,and back to Samsung sd card! lol
Just put the card back into my old Note 8, just to see if it happens on that phone,
as Note 10 is a refurbished like new, and need to see if it the phone or card thats actually faulty,
otherwise retailer is gunna blame the card, and not their phone, and Amazon are going to blame the phone more than likely ! lol

Do a low level format on the computer using a apk like Lexar's designed to do a low level format. Simply wiping the card isn't enough sometimes and without a low level format it will remain corrupted.
Sharing a card between two devices can cause card corruption, try to avoid doing so. Usually you can swap between two Androids but be very wary of swapping with other devices like cams etc. Do a full format in the new device to ensure compatibility and stability. Not doing this can result in corrupted card even if it may seem to be functional at first.
You can lose all the data on the card like this and even if you can recover it, it will be in bits and pieces... more or less a useless heap of disjointed data.

I did all the low level format, on both cards, but it still didnt stop the card playing up in my Note 10, and actually corrupting 2 pics,
so i wasnt going to risk that, just needed to make sure it wasnt the phone at fault, as it was only a few days old, but guess it was the card!
lets hope it goes ok from now on! lol

Sorry to hear that.
I've never blown out a ram stick or SD card.
Remember they can be destroyed by one ESD event; their data ports have limited ESD protection. It can happen instantly or fail weeks even years latter, multiple smaller ESD insults can cause accumulative damage over time as well.
•Never touch the contacts.
•Keep static charges low by keeping RH at 50% or higher in the room.
Lol no wool sweaters.
•Touch yourself to an earth ground to discharge any static buildup or use an ESD strap/mat to keep everything near the same potential.
A little extra care can avoid a lot of cursing latter on...

If you play with a good ESD meter you'll be amazed how much of charge you can build up on almost any nonconductor. Once the RH drops below 20% ESD becomes very problematic and widespread.
High G impacts ie dropping a chip onto concrete from 3 feet can also kill a chip.
ESD is what kills most of these cards and ram sticks though. If you can see, feel or hear static it's already enough to damage semiconductors. Punch a microscopic hole through an insulation layer only a couple microns thick (doesn't take much voltage to do that) and it's a done deal.
Their service life is tens of thousands of cycles so it's doubtful one will wear out prematurely if used with care. High cycle usage though can wear them out.
My oldest flash cards are 16 yo and still functional.
I've had multiple SanDisk cards fail and a PNY. I've had really good reliability with the Samsung EVO Plus and Select cards.
You can pick up a 512GB Samsung EVO Select from Amazon for under $80.

Same here, sandisk cards I have used failed miserably, also kingston ones, I ended using ADATA cards, not a single one has failed, ad for speed, I really find them adequate, at least for normal std uses

When you say "fail" what do you mean?
A low level format couldn't recover it?
Showed multiple bad sectors?
These cards can be corrupted fairly easily but can be completely salvaged with a low level format.
Without it they will be inaccessible and seem to be "dead". Even new cards can do this.

I mean as completely dead and unusable. It would not recognize the partition. Sandisk had released a bad batch of 128GBs a while back. They were unreadable on multiple devices.

May have been dead but a corrupted card will behave like this. A 3rd party PC low level formatting app can access these corrupted cards and repair their file structure.
Normal formatting tools like Windows one will do nothing if it even can register their presence at all.

When I mean dead, I mean DEAD. I was unable to do ANYTHING. The partition was not even readable. I used different tools like Recuva and EASUS and got nothing. I've been using SD cards for YEARS. I know how to fix them.

If the computer software can't read what's there you won't see any partition. Androids wuv to do that.
That doesn't mean it's dead... as long as you have a low level formatting tool that it shows up when connected it probably is salvageable. Make sure any needed Window drivers are loaded...
If you've had multiple failures it's time to reexamine what you're doing.
I have close to 2 dozen flash cards with some dating back 16 years and no unrecoverable failures. Data was lost but not the bloody card!
