Okay, first timer here and I have a few questions. I just completed rooting my phone via Simple Root. My build number is now 1.17.651.1.
My questions are as follows:
1) Now that I am rooted, what installation files can I delete from my SD Card?
2) I see that I need to do a recovery flash, do I do this immediately? What one do you recommend?
3) After I do the flash, are there any others files I need to install before I do a custom rom?
4) Which custom rom do you recommend?
5) Am I leaving anything else out that I forgot?

After you have rooted you can delete nearly anything you want, I wouldn't suggest doing it because I doubt you know what to do. But you do have the freedom to..
I would suggest you flash a recovery as soon as possible. It makes life easier. The two most common recovery are Amon Ra And clockwork.. I use amon Ra just because it had a better wipe feature but clockwork is used in rom manAger (look in to it).
After rooting you can look into upgrading your radio and your wimax and your kernal.
Custom roms are like sneakers, They all have different purpose and size. The most common ones are damagedcontrol and fresh. Do your research and experiment and find your sneaker. You can also just wait til the official stable cm6 comes out. For now I use fresh.
Try oUt some themes and different apps that are for rooted devices only. And there us always something neiw to do with your evo.

I am in the same boat as OP. I managed to make my way through SimpleRoot. But I am having a heck of a time digging through the forums to figure out what to do next. I feel like kind of an idiot, but I have no idea how to set up my backup/recovery "amon ra" right? And then I'd like to install the rooted 1.47 build and update my radio and wimax. Any direction would be VERY appreciated.

I'm new to this too. Read up a lot first. Easy root looks to make it pretty easy, but I learned more doing it the hard way. Used the two part method in dev section, by toast I think, with adb, nand unlock and all. Helps to understand the odd file structure, and what different parts do. You have to try things too, and just hope you don't f up. Using cm6 now and its pretty cool. Have fun man.

Also, as for flashing a recovery, if you install ROM Manager from the market, it will give you an option to flash either Clockwork or Amon RA. It will stay there even if you flash new ROMs later, though there's a quirk where a new ROM Manager install will ask you to flash recovery, but then if one is already there it won't really change it, it just needs to see it to believe it.
Installing new files won't make a difference if you switch ROMs. It wipes your data when you re-flash, so you'll lose it all anyway (unless you back up your apps with Titanium Backup or MyBackup). All you need is a recovery installed - and I actually recommend Clockwork, but only because I use it myself and I have no problems with it - and you can reboot into it, install a new ROM, and start playing. I've never flashed from ROM Manager, even though it gives the option, but I imagine it does the same thing, but runs it automatically after a recovery reboot.
Read the "favorite ROM" thread with the poll attached, lots of good ROM recommendations in there. I'll say it once more: I'm using Fresh 1.0.1 and netarchy's 3.7.3c kernel (Fresh-compatible version). It's so fast and smooth.
If you like your current setup but want to try a new ROM, use ROM Manager (or Clockwork as a recovery reboot) to do a Clockwork backup. That way you can return to your current state if you want to. It's basically a system image that you can restore.
Here's one helpful page to start with.

Back on fresh 0.5.3, clockwork was not doing a great job with the wipe, causing the boot to loop. I believe it wasn't completely wiping the dalik cache.

I have been wanting to root and try a custom rom but I was scared of brick. Anyway I finally rooted with Unrevoked 3.3 which installed Clockwork recovery also and after that I installed rom manager. When I went to do a backup of current rom it said I need to install Clockwork recovery first but its there already. I know there is guides everywhere but thats the problem not sure which to use to learn what to do before I try flashing new rom. What about kernel I really don't understand where to go from here. I am rooted and Clockwork recovery flashed but don't know where to go from here. I am not a idiot just a little guidance please! I really want learn process of installing new and restoring old roms with my Evo. How do I know what other updates need to done before using a certain rom like kernel and radio? Well first backup your rom and wimax keys and then go to the xda android development section and download a rom, clear cache /dalvik/ and I think its system restore something like that..I don't use cwr

Just dl rom go to rom manager
I think its install from memory card and rom manager takes care of the rest....you can also dl roms from this forum on ur phone it makes it easier

First of all, if you're certain that your recovery is installed, then you need to decide what rom and what type of rom you want to install? For instance, do you want a Sense based rom (the HTC overlay that your EVO came with) or an AOSP rom (Pure Android like on the Nexus)? For a sense based rom, I suggest Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo RLS-5. You can see photos of it as well as download it from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=793471 and for an AOSP rom, I suggest Salvage-Mod 1.2.1. It can be downloaded from here: http://www.salvage-mod.com/node/4. Make sure you download the Google Applications from the same page. Whichever you decide to flash or any others, put them on your SD card. Now shutdown your device. Simultaneously press the DOWN volume button and the power button until your device starts. There will be a short pause and then a few lines of text will scroll across the screen. Afterwards, you will see a set of options. One of the options will be "recovery". By the way, look at the top of the screen and make sure it displays "S-OFF". If it displays "S-ON", you are not rooted. Anyway, select recovery. Your phone will vibrate and display a white EVO screen and then boot into recovery. Your recovery should be ClockworkMod. Go into the backup menu and select nandroid backup to make a backup of your current setup. You can always restore your device to the way it was if you don't like your new roms, mods, themes and kernels. After you've made your backup, go to the wipe menu and wipe everything except the SD card. After that, go to the flash zip menu and flash the rom you want to try. After it's finished, it should prompt you to reboot. Do so and be patient. You will appear to hang at a couple of places. Be patient. Let it finish. Be patient. Do not pull the battery. Be patient. After some time, you will see your rom's splash screen and then your new homescreen. One more thing I just let Rom Manager install recovery and after that I did backup. The next step would be to dl rom and place it in sd card right? Do I need to rename file or update kernel or radio and where do I put the new rom for manager to find? Also I didn't use Unrevoked forever just 3.3 will I need to run the forever app also? I know what a noob! Man I really Thank You for helping! I am dying to try some new roms Froyo is boring. What rom what rom do you recommend? Thanks Again!

Root of card is preferred but anywhere is fine since you will have to point rom manager to it. Alot of roms come with kernels so I wouldn't sweat it. No need to rename. A good starting rom are any kingsroms insane fast and all features usually work most are still froyo but look much different than ur stock rom

Wouldn't say I'm a noob but I'm moderately knowledgeable in the flash process, I use amon RA (much better in my opinion) but was never good at giving instruction or directions lol

I, too, use amon RA and love it. As for not giving good instructions, don't worry about it. There have been numerous times when I've given summarized instructions because I either assumed the OP knew what I was talking about or I was rushing because I had something else to do. The important thing to remember is that you helped. Period!...

Thanks I am amazed how quick you helped me out! I am charging battery and then I will wipe and flash a rom with fingers crossed! I am a little scared I am not rich this is the only phone I have but you have a risk when doing any os changes with anything I guess! I will post results of first rom flash!

Not to worry if u run into any problems there are many threads with instructions to unbrick or fix ur problem and people here are usually very quick to help that's why I love it here....and rom manager is very good at not making mistakes in the flash process I used it when I first started so ur in good hands

Just d/l the latest version, put it on your sd card, reboot to recovery and flash it, then when you reboot to system, you'll get the prompt to go to the market and d/l each app.

You can either flash it immediately after flashing Salvage-Mod or boot into Salvage-Mod first and then press and hold the power button until the menu appear
Select reboot and then select recovery. Once you're back into recovery, wipe cache & dalvik cache and then flash the Google applications (gapps). Afterwards, reboot.

Well I first off wana say, you were in good hands with dougjamal.
To flash gapps:
1. Download the latest gapps / the ones provided in the salvage mod thread
2. Boot into recovery.
3. After you have flashed the salvage mod rom, wipe your cache and dalvik cache, then flash the gapps zip.
Hi, guys and girls.
I know this question sounds stupid, and someone might say: "Duuuh, use the seach-function!" - Well, I have, but as a new member it's pretty hard finding the things that I need when there's so many sections and such.
Now for my question:
At Christmas I recieved a Samsung Galaxy Gio. The phone is cool, and I like it a lot. However, I do wanna use a custom ROM. Can anybody tell me (step by step, please) how to do so? I have read the "Big thread For New Users", but somehow I managed to get lost in all of the fine new words.
I have done it before on my HTC Touch Diamond, (but I dropped it and now it won't start again) but I really can't figure out how to do so this time - and it would be sad to ruin my new phone by doing stuff I don't know anything about.
So, could anybody please be nice and tell me how to install a custom ROM? And please keep in mind that I'm a huuuuge newbie
I'm using Android 2.3.6

P.S. Would I be able to "revert" everything back to how it is now? Is there a way to "unroot" (I know there is, just not how to), and can the default ROM from Samsung be found anywhere?
okay so first DON'T use Rom Manager because it bricks your gio.
if you want to flash a custom rom you need to flash clockwork recovery. after that download "ext4 formatter" and flash it with cwm recovery (install zip->choose zip). download a custom rom and flash it in the same way as "ext4 formatter". wipe data and restart your phone... (clockwork mod recovery, ext4 formatter and custom roms can be found in development section)
if you don't like all these custom roms you can install the stock rom by downloading a stock rom on sammmobile.com and flashing with odin.

You don't to be a delevoper if you want to flash your phone. It's really very easy if you read a few infos about this. One post above you have a list of things that you have to do but it's easy. You can do this in about 10 minutes. Very important is: you must know what you do. And do this ! Here you can view a lot of tutorials and links of roms, recorecys etc. :

1. Not needed to do before flashing but it doesn't hurt either
2. No need for ROOT if you plan flashing a custom rom. 100% of custom roms have root pre-installed.
3. Download the file, put it on your SD card (do not put it in any folder, just on your sdcard), go into recovery mode, chose install zip from sdcard, navigate to the file, chose it, chose Yes and wait for it to finish, do wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache partition from CWM and you're done!
4. Yes, start it up (it takes quite long time to boot it for the first time) and you may do the hard reset but i have never done it and my Gio is still working perfectly. And yes flashing and installing is basically the same thing.
P.S I know how you feel exactly atm. When i got my gio and learned about flashing custom roms and rooting, I was scared as well but now i have installed many roms and now it is like a normal thing for me. Have fun and DO NOT USE ROM MANAGER!

The first two steps are right. after that you are downloading the clockwork mod recovery (also called cwm) and the ext4 formatter from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1421650. now you are entering the stock recovery. turn off your phone and restart it but hold the power and home button at boot. now flash the cwm zip file (in the thread is all explained how to do). restart the phone and enter the cwm recovery by holding power and home button at boot. go to "install zip" -> "choose zip" and choose the ext4 formatter zip file. okay now wipe data. download a custom rom and install it in cwm like the other zip files. wipe again data. now restart your phone.
and tadaaa it should work

Yes, like I said every custom rom has root. I think what emyaz thinks is that root is essential and if you don't install a custom rom you should root your phone. And your example has root and it doesn't need to be rooted.
EDIT: On XDA yes, there are basically only custom roms. If a rom isn't a custom rom or doesn't have a root then it is most certainly said in the topic.
You need to root your device before you start flashing roms. But is it nessesary to flash an ext4 formatter. I didn't do it. I do not have any problems. Where do you need it for?

I didn't root my phone before flashing roms. And I also haven't used ext4 formatter and it is working fine. So I don't know about that really.

Well I think for safety, root it. If you don't probably nothing will happen but I'm not sure, but if you do then nothing bad will happen either.

Flash ext4formatter (cleans all partitions and mounts as ext4, no wipes needed, only use this first time installing a rom or after using ODIN to restore to stock)

what i mean was that you need to root your device to install the cwm recovery. so the first step is to root your device and then install cwm recovery. sorry if i confused you

When I tried to unbrick it, I flashed a wrong stock ROM (somehow Odin let me do it )
I need a really detailed guide on how to do it (install a custom ROM).. I've been trying to unbrick my phone for the last 1½ hours
Fortunately it all works fine now. I just need a detailed guide or something so I don't **** up

Following this Video will help you out with getting your S3 rooted and a custom recovery installed:

After your phone is rooted and you have the recovery installed, go to the play store and install rom manager, open rom manager and install clock work mod recovery (it will just update the current version of the clock work mod that is on your phone from flashing one of the required zips) if you dont update your recovery you will get problems when trying to flash a rom.
Once rooted and recovery is updated go to the original android development section or android development section and choose a rom that interests you (if touchwiz just download the rom, if its cm, aokp, aosp or aospa youll most likely need to download the rom and Gapps which are google apps).
once you have your desired rom and Gapps (if required) reboot into recovery (hold volume up, home button and power button, once you see blue text in the left hand corner let go of just the power button until the recovery shows up) then do backup of Your current rom.
once you have made a backup, do a full wipe: wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, wipe data factory reset, then install the rom You chose, then install the Gapps (if required) then reboot the devie.
once you reboot the device let it sit for 5-10 minutes some roms take longer than others to boot up for the first time and even though the phone has booted up, its good to just let it sit for a few minutes and to let everything settle. now you're ready to go through the setup.
now you're rooted and have a custom recovery and rom installed, Stay away from the international S3 threads, flash anything from there and you'll brick your phone, just flash things that are meant for your device :highfive: YOUR WARRANTY IS NOW VOID
No crazy brick bugs like the i777. Follow his rooting method but look into twrp. Its far more robust and user friendly for a custom recovery. Impossible to brick you phone flashing a ROM its in these forums for att or T-Mobile.

TWRP is nice and has a lot of options, but in my opinion Cwm is more reliable.
Personal preferences I guess.

Before you do all that make sure you Backup your NV items basically your IMEI, this phone has a tendency to lose that randomly without that you have a mp3 phone won't work like it's suppose to. Some say Cwm was causing it but truth be told there are more users with Cwm than twrp so the stats really are unfair. This is the most important step check around the forums there's about 2 or 3 ways you can do this.

Welcome to the Galaxy S3 community!
You have made a very wise choice by choosing the Wicked v9.1 custom rom.
It really is the best you will find for your phone here on xda.
I have flashed and tried them all including CM10, AOKP, AOSP and even the ported roms and the only
rom which I found to be good enough to be a commercial retail product is the Wicked custom rom.
You will not go wrong with it.

This is a beginners guide to start modifying your Android device. When I joined the website I felt like I didn't know where to start. So I thought I could make this thread to get people started.
*I will not be held responsible for any damage that may be caused to your device.
First things first your going to need to root your device. What rooting does is it allows special access to things in your phone. Without root custom roms and custom recoveries will not work. Also some apps require root to work. So to root your device search for the name of your device in the search box. Once you find your device then go to the Android development section. And usually near the top there will be a guide on how to root your device.
If your can't find or your device doesn't have a forum section (for example the Us Cellular Galaxy s4) then search for a similar device. So I have the Us cellular galaxy s4 and it doesn't have a forum section. So I could look at the Verizon or At&T galaxy s4 section and see if the root method with work on my us cellular galaxy s4. Thankfully there is a method that works for the us cellular version too. If you still can't find a root method for your device then I would Google it and see what you can find.
Once you have gotten root access then the next step is to install a custom recovery.
IF U WANT TO CHECK IF YOU HAVE SUCCESSFULLY GOTTEN ROOT ACCESS THEN DOWNLOAD THE ROOT CHECKER APP.
Ok so what a custom recovery is basically a tool to install/ flash things to your device. For example If I want a transparent status bar then I can download an s4 transparent status bar. Then I can go into recovery mode. After that since I have a custom recovery I can install the new status bar in recovery mode. Then reboot my phone. And boom I have a transparent status bar. Be sure to check out the link. It will further Explain custom recoveries.

Ok so to get a custom recovery you can follow the link above or your can do the same thing u did for root. Search your device. Then go to the Android development section and look for a thread on how to install a custom recovery. There are different types/versions of recoveries. Clock work mod recovery is one of the more popular ones and is what I personally use and I recommend. TWRP (team win recovery project is another one and is good too.)
After you get a custom recovery installed you need to make a backup. In case something goes wrong by user error or accident you can fix your device.
A back up is needed because if I would try to install a rom and for some reason it doesnt boot up then your going to need to return to what you were previously on. For example I have my galaxy s4 and If i make a backup right before I install a new rom. Then I try installing a rom and for whatever reason it doesn't work. I can go back into recovery mode and I can install my back up. And the backup will be everything that I had on my device before I tried to install a new rom. Once you have a backup then go to the next step.
Now the best part custom roms. Ok a custom rom is kinda hard to explain but im gonna try to. So a rom is basically firmware. And u can have different types of roms (firmware) for your device. **THE NUMBER ONE RULE IS TO NEVER INSTALL A ROM THAT IS NOT MEANT FOR YOUR PHONE. THIS IS 99 PERCENT OF WHY PEOPLE HARD BRICK THEIR DEVICE. **
So generally there are too different versions of roms. Stock based roms and aosp/ cyanogen based roms. Stock roms have generally the same look but may offer more options and settings for things. Some stock based roms have options to Change the look too.
Aosp(cyanogen mod,pac man, carbon) roms are going to change the look a lot. And have more options to Change Things too. Check out cyanogenmod.com to see what I mean.
Roms are a lot of fun to expirment with and see which ones you like best.
So your ready to get a custom rom.
Make sure you have a back up before you continue.
1. Dowload a rom to your device.
A good rom to try is cyanogen mod. It's an aosp based rom. Follow this link and see if your device is compatible.

2. If you are going to install cyanogen mod or any aosp you are also going to need g apps. What g apps is is a package of apps. Basically of all the stock apps. Stock roms have it built in.

If you want to check out other roms then go to your device in the forums then go to the Android development section. And look around there should be plenty to choose from.
3. So if you are installing cyanogen mod make sure you have gapps if you are installing a stock based rom you don't need it.
4.Boot into recovery mode. You can download rom manager from the play store and go into the app and press boot into recovery mode or do it manually by using the hard keys. Google it if you can't get into recovery mode.
5.Once in recovery mode if u are installing cyanogen mod do a wipe data/factory reset.
If you are installing a stock based rom skip that step unless you want to wipe data. Or if where you found the rom it says to wipe data.
6.flash the rom you installed. Remember where you put it when you downloaded it.
7. If you needed it find gapps then flash(install) that.
If you didn't need gapps then skip that step.
8. Wipe the cache partion
9. Wipe the davilk cache. *Its under advanced* This is important so you don't get a boot loop.
10. Reboot system
11. Enjoy your new rom.
Common errors:
If you get stuck at the boot logo you probably forgot to wipe the davilk cache. Its under advanced options in recovery.
If you try to install cyanogen mod and get an error saying system has stopped and that error keeps showing up then you used the wrong gapps package. Dowload the one closest to the top of the page if u are trying to download cyano

Do I need to do some backup before Rooting too?

First of all, I really appreciate your work for helping Noobs like me, for teaching all these things...
I was going to do perform experiments on my Android phone, and I would like to be sure regarding the steps. Of course, nobody wants to go wrong while doing this.
So, Do I need to do any sort of Backup before Rooting process, too?
Or it is just simple like:
Root your Phone
Install some Custom Recovery
Flash some cool Custom ROMs (optional)
Also, Is there anything, that I should be aware of, regarding Bootloaders? People discuss so much about Locked/Unlocked bootloaders.
I checked the Hidden Menu of my phone and it says that my Bootloader is Locked.
It would be appreciating, if you can add something regarding this Bootloader thing in your Post too.

The G Apps you downloaded didn't work.... flash your backup to fix this, of course you will be back to normal and still have root. Find another ROM or find a better G Apps. The keyboard not working happened to my nexus 4 after flashing cyanogen... oh well. NEXT!!!!
A helpful tool would be the clockwork mod ROM manager that you can download from either the Play store or the Amazon app market. You can download the gapps zip directly from the app as well as boot into recovery from the app so you can install the zip. I would also recommend buying the pro (it's 99 cents and you are supporting a great team of devs) app so you can update your CM ROM and switch ROMs if you like doing that.

Clockwork Mod also has a touch recovery that is really nice to have to navigate though. You can buy it on the app or you can download it off their site for free. I use it on all of my devices and swear by it. There aren't very many that aren't supported from the major manufacturers so it's a great tool to have in your arsenal. That and it makes installing zips easier for those newer to the wonderful world of Android.

Yes, I rooted my phone and did all the things I Google searched. The the phone (Sprint Galaxy S6 SM-G920P) worked fine. I did the Renegade ROM and I got stuck on the Load screen for Renegade. When it didn't work I accidentally wiped my entire phone and tried saving it with Cm-13.0-201xxxxxx, but it sucks. It will not let me do anything. I am searching for a ROM I can flash with TWRP that will allow me to get my phone up and working properly. Can any of you help
How to do the samething when the touchscreen is not working properly
I got the stock rom for my device and the touchscreen does not work properly after flashing it to my device, surely I did something wrong or the rom from the manufacturer is not working.
I have seen newer and differnt versions I can use for the THL 5000 mkt or MK 6592 chipset, just all the ROMs want a person to have some android interface where the android touchscreen is working fine. So my thought is how do I go about either finding another custom rom which will work with this device when most if not all use android touchscreens for the smart phones and I can't find roms with scatter files and bin files for this model.
Touchscreen works in a weird way where pressing the lower screen selects things above it.
