That is for Mac, and dd commands arent needed for this. Frankly telling people to dd ANYTHING without telling them the dangers of that command, and that there are safer/easier ways of doing something if dumb.
Some newbs need something simple and to the point, some people dont do well with info overload when they want to do something simple.
[edit]
You are right that was a Win tutorial... see, too much info.

You should avoid rooting your phone.................
Or have someone who is throughly familiar with the process do it for you.

you have been told "what to do" show some pride, suck it up and read.
it is super simple.
if you do not understand then stop or you will be worse off.
just read you will be surprised how easy it is
I love it when someone is handed detailed instructions then asks for instructions again.

first of all i'm not a dude, second i did the guide of the rooting, i managed to do everything but there's a stage where the option doesn't appear in the recovery section. All i ask is for help. If you don't intend to help then don't bother replying.
Plug phone into USB, turn on debugging mode, run revolutionary, enjoy root.
Honestly, it's that simple. The people on here that are telling you that you "shouldn't bother rooting" if you have to ask this question are not saying that to be rude at all. It's a simple fact that rooting gives you privileges to sensitive system files that, if you dont know what you are doing and can't follow simple step by step instructions, can cause you to do extreme damage to your phone such as bricking. Again, it's a very simple process that you will be repeating very often while flashing various ROMs, kernels, and radios. If you aren't comfortable enough following the millions of step by step guides here on the forums then, for your phone's safety, you shouldn't be rooting. Keep reading the guides, scour the forum for the billion of other posts like yours, and then root AFTER you understand the ENTIRE process start to finish. I know you're eager to root your phone but such sensitive things should not be done without full understanding.
Again, nobody is trying to be rude to you at all. It's just that those of us more experienced in the subject know what can happen when inexperienced people try to blindly root, and subsequently flash, a bunch of stuff on their phone. Please try to take a step back and understand this.
Did you download the fastboot drivers and make sure HTC sync is not installed on your computer?

[Q] Help - New to rooting

All -
I am not sure where to go. I am new to a Verizon GNex running stock ICS v4.0.4 and using a mac laptop, and looking to possibly get into rooting. It appears CM9 is popular specially since they appear to have added several of the SIII's new features.
I have read several posts on several sites talking about rooting the GNex. There seems soooooo many different ways to root i'm going crazy. Since I am new to rooting, I am not sure what is the best/easiest way to get started to ensure I don't loose anything.
Any help on the right way to go, any forum posts to start with, etc....would be very much appreciated!!
Thanks!
use this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1529058
dont use a toolkit either. you'll be better off with the knowledge of what you are doing and people will be more apt to help you if things go wrong.

Thank you both for replying, but....I am working on a MacBook and the link you provided appears only to be for a Windows Machine. I luv the walk-thru what exists in the forum - I just need it for a Mac..
Thanks again!
Should be the same deal... just with terminal.
Here is a zip with ad and fast boot needed for Mac. It may also have the recovery and su.zip but ignore those use what the windows tutorial says.

Exact same method, but use Terminal instead of Command Prompt, and put a "./" in front of every command. For example:
Code:
./adb devices

Newbie to rooting...

Hi. Apologies in advance, since I am sure that this has been asked before. Anyway, I would like to root my GSM Galaxy Nexus, but I am a newbie to the whole rooting thing. I found a guide at the following site (I can't post links)...
galaxynexusroot DOT com/galaxy-nexus-root/how-to-root-galaxy-nexus-universal-guidegsmverizonsprintwindowslinuxmac/ ...
that seems to be simple enough (I really don't know where to begin). Is that guide a good reference point? I'm just worried about bricking my Nexus, and looking for the easiest method possible.
Thanks in advance!

Easiest way to root and install TWRP, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2208863&highlight=wugfresh
Use the toolkit. Its hands down the easiest way and the method I had followed the first time myself. I am a Maguro owner myself! :good::good:

what are you talking about? it is awesome because you can always cry for help when you have no idea what happened to your phone.
If yu are a complete newbie, I suggest a Toolkit. I was and am a Linux user, so using command line is not a problem. But 1st time success helps you gather the courage to further dig into stuff!
So don't get me wrong when I suggested the toolkit.
easy guys, not wrong to begin with toolkit stuff. time will let him learn...

[Q] firewater woes

So, I have searched both here and at overclock.net (how i found my way here)
I am totally new to rooting/unlocking phones.. I got my M8 yesterday and have been doing much research into the matter and decided I would try it... I have followed the instructions as listed here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2708628
and am stuck on step 12... I have downloaded the firewater file.. and dropped it into adt-bundle-windows-x86_64-20140321/sdk/platform_tools file on my computer (is it supposed to be on the device somewhere?)... it says after downloading the file to follow the instuctions listed on firewater website.. but i dont understand what it is telling me to do (again.. totally new to this).. i have installed an ran weaksauce.. installed supersu and made sure i had root with Rootchecker... what exactly am i missing here?
not sure what this is telling me to do:
Push, Prepare, obtain root, and execute firewater:
adb reboot <--important!!!!
adb wait-for-device push firewater /data/local/tmp
adb shell
chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/firewater
su
/data/local/tmp/firewater
i apologize in advance if there is a duplicate post explaining this somewhere.. I searched and did not find it.. and for my newbish ignorance of how all this works... lol.. the help is greatly appreciated as i do not want to **** up my new shiny awesome M8
EDIT: I successfully rooted and unlock the bootloader... hmmm now to find something to do with it lol
any suggestions? or steps to take next?
You need to open a command window inside of platform tools and enter the text exactly as the instructions are written.
^^^^ +1 What he says
If you have any experience with DOS, think about it like this:
adb reboot <--important!!!!
Obviously this reboots the phone,
adb wait-for-device push firewater /data/local/tmp
This pushes (copys) the firewater file to that directory on your phone
adb shell
chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/firewater
su
Gives you Root access as Superuser and edits permissions on the file
/data/local/tmp/firewater
This executes firewater
From then it's a waiting game to see whether how long it takes to gain S-OFF or if you are one of the unlucky ones who get the whelp message.
I'm gonna be blunt - if you don't know what you're doing why even try? Read up on the Android basics first, and whether you even need to be S-OFF? What are you wanting to do with the phone?
If you carry on just winging it you'll end up with a potential paper weight

Well taking yalls advice how would anyone learn anything? you can't learn without doing... And guess what... I figured it all out by myself ... "Winging it" is the only way to learn in my opinion... Follow directions and do what it says... I was simply looking at the wrong thing when trying to get through the firewater step...

no, your reply was helpful even it if was after the fact that i got it working... i was speaking of the rest of the people
I don't want to start anything but for people who may read this thread in the future, I can easily link to several threads where winging it has ended in a brick and now that you have S-OFF, I really really don't recommend winging it. Of course you can do as you please, it's only because I care that I am making this post.

Yes. Really. I am looking forward to OP coming back after flashing a wrong hboot file because a custom rom he flashed wont boot.
Again... I'm not the run of the mill phone user who has no experience with this kind of thing... As far as tweaking electronics goes... I've been doing things like this on PC's for years... Just not on phones... I was able to successfully flash and boot the ROM... Without issue or bricking my phone.. I was hung up on one step because I read the step wrong..
People come to forums and ask questions because they have some understanding and maybe need some help ... Not to be told "if you don't know don't try". That is a real issue in this country and I'm sure most others... People give up bc they have that mentality... That's sheer ignorance.. I hope no one ever takes that kind of advice from you.. in the future try to be a bit more helpful to someone.. not just flame them for being novice at something..
