Does using wifi drain the battery? Is it better than using the actual 3G or 4G?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
I'm sure someone has a way more technical answer but I would think not. I have no issues with drainage on wifi, as on 2g its on the network constantly and not continually searching for towers.

If you are connected to a wifi network, it saved much more battery than using 3 or 4g. However, if you leave wifi on but don't connect to a network, it will drain battery

Turning on anything more than necessary will kill your battery faster. Not always by a lot but everything does and wifi wouldn't always be faster because it depends on the wifi's local area connection. Best way to save battery is to go in settings/applications/manage applications the force close anything you don't need running. Make sure you know what it is you're closing or you could run into some problems. If you end up killing a system app and it won't reopen itself, its nothing a reboot won't fix.

DO NOT DO THIS.
Android has its own automatic task management system, and its best if you just let it do what it does best: manage on its own.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 running Cyanogenmod.
Well gee I do it all the time and it works fine. If it wasn't intended to be used I don't think it would come without root permissions and anyone who isn't an idiot will realize that force closing android system will cause problems. But if you wanna suggest a task manager that doesn't actually kill apps and adds some bloat ware, be my guest.

He's not going to recommend another task manager/killer, because Android already does it by itself. Plus, killing a task that is not finished just causes it to respawn. Task killers are unnecessary, and may actually hurt performance and battery life.
Its explained here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849974&highlight=task+killer
I agree that it's best to let Android clean it's own house normally, however I'm getting a little bit jarred off with certain apps starting themselves up at boot-time.
Paypal app for some reason has installed a service on my phone, despite the fact I've never even logged into it and I can't see why it would need a service running all the time.
Also since the latest Google Maps upgrade there seems to be something under my running tasks called Rate Places. I've not used the check-in service on GMaps at all, nor will I ever.
As well as this, since I've been running a modded CM ROM (SparksMod Extra Hot Sauce) then I constantly have Wi-Fi Calling running - again this is useless to me cos I'm not on TMob US.
Any suggestions for a decent app which can stop all these things running before they ever start, and keep them stopped?

Try "Autorun Manager"
I use it, but SOME apps will auto-restart. I think you need the Pay version of Autorun Manager to prevent those from re-launching.
I use the free version, and it gets rid of some of the problem.
WiFi is definitely causing massive battery drain on my G2 with CM6.1.1. I leave it on at night, and if I have 50% when I go to sleep, I'm down to 3% in the morning. Without doing anything.
I'm not quite sure why this is happening, but it is, and it sucks. I can't go back on 3G/4G right now because I'm at just about 4.8GB, and I don't want to go over my 5GB soft cap.
I wish I knew why WiFi was causing such battery drain...
Do you have anything updating automatically (Email, facebook, etc)? That would be my best guess. I leave wifi on when I'm at home and it isn't that bad at all. Also, I'm sure theres an app out there to let you see what is using the wifi for updates and such. I just don't know of one off the top of my head. I have an app like that for 3G data but it doesn't do wifi.
I just went through every one of my apps to make sure that nothing is set to sync, except Google Voice and Email. My battery is at 50% right now, so we'll see what it's at tomorrow morning.
As you can see from the screenshot, WiFi is using quite a bit of battery. I'm not sure why, but hopefully soon (after some testing) I'll have my answer.

Yup, 2 nights in a row, my battery has gone from 40% to dead, simply from sitting on my night stand. I wonder if this is why T-Mobile discontinued the G2... because they knew it would have battery issues, and they didn't want to deal with serving warranties? Hmmm...
Its a bit of a leap of logic to link your personal battery issue with T-Mob discontinuing the phone. T-Mob has a good number of Android phones coming out in the near future, with T-Mob really ramping up their support of Android devices. So its been very reasonably speculated that they are discontinuing the G2 in order to make room in their lineup (and stockrooms, etc.) for the new phones.
I get a full day of moderate usage on my Vision, and can get close to 2 days with low usage. That's very typical for a modern smartphone. I usually get in the range of 2-3% battery drain per hour when the phone is idle. And that's with WiFi always on (even when not connected to a WiFi network) and auto sync of Gmail and HTC stock and weather apps. You haven't mentioned how long "overnight" is exactly, but I'll assume 8 hours or so. So your phone draining from 40% to dead overnight seems unusual. WiFi typically uses less battery then the cell data network, when WiFi is available. I suspect there is something else going on, besides just being on WiFi. If the cell reception is dodgey in your area (or fringe 3G reception), this might run the battery down (even if you are on WiFi) as the phone is constantly searching for signal. Or your radio may be mismatched to your custom ROM. Or you may just have a bad battery. Also, was the battery drain any different when you were on the stock or other custom ROMs? I personally haven't witnessed the battery drain to be significantly different across the ROMs I've tried. But that seems to vary, as there often seem to be people complaining about this or that ROM causing more battery drain.
The reason I thought it might be a hardware defect issue is that my wife and I got G2's at the same time. I rooted mine and have been running CM6.1.1 for a few months now, and my wife has kept hers stock. However, the battery issue hit both our phones at almost the exact same time.
It sounds ridiculous, but conspiracy theories are fun to play with. The fact that I've been rooted so long, and it JUST happened weirds me out. Add my wife's phone to the equation, and it's even weirder. I kept my phone on WiFi and 2G networks only last night (yeah, about 8 hours), and the exact same thing happened.
Maybe I should just get a new battery, I don't know. But I do religiously delete apps I don't use and make sure the ones I do use are syncing as minimally as possible.

Even when my phone is 'idle' it seems to be communicating over 3g. Is is normal or is there something I can do, I'm looking to tweak my phone to optimize battery life.

I'm having the same issue, i used 300mb of data today and i really didn't even use my phone all that often. I have fresh .3 and full root with nand unlocked. Now is there an app that will monitor bandwidth usage s o i can see which app is chewing my bandwidth? As odd as it seams i think this is just a bug, i tried to capture data use when the 3g data lite was on but it showed minimal (under 60kb in 30 min)usage, its really kind of strange. for now i just turned off data.
On another note, I'm noticing something very very odd with my phone... even after i kill WIFI tethering app my pc is still connected and i can still use data, its odd.
Is it normal to have 39% battery left with normal use after 8 hours 30 mins?

Just asking becasue i think it's running low fast..
OJ haven't died...
your lucky,
my battery is empty after 7 hours.
desire's battery is terrible. I couldn't manage to get 5h of using on it.
I am running the stock htc sense 2.2 rom, and my battery with moderate to heavy use would hold out for 24 hours. Something is badly wrong if you are getting less than 12. It was pretty much the same for me on 2.1 too. Getting 38+ hours now I'm using tasker.
Custom roms are supposed to be more efficient too. Have you looked to see what is using the power? A rouge app perhaps?

I wrote this post the other day and just to update it i ended up getting 60 hours on one full charge which is pretty amazing. Some of the other posters had a go at me about turning mobile internet off and wifi off but who cares i got 60 HOURS!!!!
Hi Everyone,
I thought id share the amazing battery life im having, ive had it going for 48 hours so far and still got 45% of my battery still left, ill tell you all my set up and i wish you can get the same.
Installed LeeDroids rom (1.9a) which is absolutely amazing i must say, i love it.
Got the new radio 32.44.00.32u_5.09.05.30_2.
SetCPU running and have the normal standby on the phone at 642mhz and 245mhz when the screen is off.
I also have a task killer on set to kill most apps when the screen turns off and i have read about androids memory management but it makes me feel better when i run it and i personally think it helps.
Finally, and possibly the most important is an app called AutoKiller that interacts with androids internal memory management system and i have that set to ultimate.
I think thats it, and i have been using the phone averagely, and have turned off wifi and mobile internet and only use it when i need it.
Good luck everyone, hope this is helpful in someway.
I used to get 6 to 12 hours after I recovered my phone from being usb bricked. I'd missed a vital part of the recovery procedure! Now I get over 24 hours with heavy usage. I'm also using Setcpu.

Sorry bad English. I have rooted Desire + DeFrost and battery life is about 10-12 hour.
Chances are that anyone who is getting really bad battery life has a rogue app installed.
FWIW, I installed the Sky News app yesterday, and found, via Spare Parts, that it was stopping the phone from sleeping and creaming my battery life. I installed it, and things went back to normal.

Dave
how to find which software etc is gulping the most battery?
There are two ways of doing this. The quickest is to open your dialer, and dial the following; *#*#4636#*#*
This code will open up a hidden menu. Select 'battery history'.
From here you can see what aspects of your phone are using which resources from selecting from the drop-down menu. Try looking at 'partial wake usage'. This will show up any rogue apps that are doing the phone from going to sleep. In fact, check them all out.
The second way is to download an app called 'spare parts' which gives you access to this hidden menu without using the dialer.
Hope this reveals the culprit!

I'm relatively new to android but my last two windows mobile based devices have had much longer battery life if I set the network mode to GSM only. Would this be the same for the desire or would it be better on WCDMA only?
GSM will only give you 2g bandwidth, but yes the battery will last longer. CDMA will give you 3g and HSDPA. I leave mine on this and get 36 hours typically.

The biggest issue with doing this is that you won't get simultaneous voice and data over the cellular network. If some tries to call you whilst your phone is syncing (and thus actively using data), the call will go straight to voicemail.
Regards,
Dave
2d 18h and on 16% with mobile internet on, sync on etc. But my usage is fairly low, about 20 mins voice, 10 texts approx, 20 mins 3G web browsing and about 10 mins of gaming.
On heavy use, it will last at least 24hrs - not bad, though I use setcpu to adjust max clock speed to about 700mhz and I have not notice any difference in terms of slow down.
Also I am not using any task killers apps.
EDIT: Forgot to mention that I use Timeriffic to automatically turn on airplane mode at night every night and off in the morning.

Yes - I probably should've mentioned that this is carrier dependent, but most carriers don't seem to be implement it.

My wife's Dinc2 all of a sudden went from going two days on a charge to barely getting 6 hours.
Anyone recommend any programs to monitor battery usage more intensely? She is not rooted. The battery stats for some reason say that the Calendar is being used more than anything else... which is strange. She claims she doesn't use the calendar, so I am wondering what app is using the Calendar.
Any ideas?

When you say she only uses data at home, do you mean via WiFi? If so, there's another possibility.
In Wifi Settings screen, tap menu|advanced and turn OFF "Best WiFi performance." I had inadvertently turned this on and found my phone sucking battery juice so fast you could almost hear it. Now that I turned the "best" off, I get a couple of days of battery. Unless you're streaming movies or doing something similar, the regular wifi performance works just fine.
I will put in another vote for full wipe/factory reset unless you're rooted. then I would suggest trying wipe battery stats first.
If it persists, batteries are cheap on amazon/ebay. No biggie.
"Best Wifi Performance" is off, so no luck there.
I started backing up her settings (sms, launcher settings etc) and I'm going to try a factory wipe soon on it.
Considering rooting it and installing a custom ROM, whats the vote for the most stable/basic with great battery life?

If you want more stock style, andyboneSTOCK. Or nitsuj gingerbangsense. I put Andy on my wife's phone, debloated and used nitsuj 3.0 patch and it works great. Nitsuj's rom with his patch works perfect too. Got the #21 kernel UV -50mv. I'm also hearing a lot of good from sabotage, but I have little experience with it. I'm currently using miui with aeroevan .07 kernel and my battery is insane but, miui is aosp. If you want a really pretty/stable rom you can go with either mikrunny or newts Inc 2 HD rom. Check & if necessary, turn off some of the running widgets that might be running (including those fancy, colorful HTC ones pre-installed with various Scene/Skin/Lock Screen & Live Wallpapers (which apparently drain faster than those with a simple, stationary background) - updates under the Sense Clock/Weather widget? News app. with breaking news alert & auto-update and Gmail/Email Apps - Push & Settings for Off-Peak Update, Facebook & Tweeter, etc. Are there any VZW bloatwares running - i.e. Backups? If all of those seemed routine & nothing out of the ordinary, getting S-OFF and rooted, and you can get a near 100% stock Sense ROM with nice tweaks - with better battery life and excellent functionalty.
Just going to give a biased & partial snapshot of mine: having flashed a # of ROMs but decided to stick with Sense 2.1/3.0 only as I need to preserve GSM/global phone functionality for travel & work purposes:
RMK's GingerSense is good old reliable, like stock without all the extra non-sense, nearly up-to-date with most and the rest is easily updated via Market. It's one of the 1st. ones that I put on mine: set & forget as a daily ROM.
andybonesStock, rooted & tweaked, has all the latest OTA incorporated and easy to strip all unneeded/unwanted components, and has good review. If I wanted to look stock, this is what I will go back to.
Sabotage Sense came out recently, and is very good, fast & responsive, and has the latest OTA, support OC kernel and reliable, and more tweaks coming with next verison due out soon. Got it running on one of ours - very good battery life & great Quadrant scores (1500's) for benchmark purposes. I believe more goodies will come in the weeks/months ahead.
Skyraider's Zeus V1.3 (google for the site) out since last Nov. - Sense 2.1/3.0 patched, lots of goodies too (more than Sabotage/sorry, CS for that - yours is great) and plenty of customization, the latest OTA should be out with V1.35 due out soon anytime. It just work & excellent battery life - easily 30 to 50 hours on average, to as much as 60 to 75 hours on a stock battery with tweaks & settings optimized. Got it running on our other DI2, flashed the newest radio & OC kernel #21, it's a solid daily workforce, has Quadrant scores as high as 1750's with a -65 dbM 3G signal (typical 1500-1600's).
With these 4 Roms, APN-SMS-MMS, WiFi, 3G and other vital elements work flawlessly, *228 worked when needed to update PRL, and Accounts sync. nicely without patches or workarounds - it will function as if you are running stock, majority won't even noticed that you are running a customized ROM. In real life, both of our phones can go 2 full days before going back on the charger unless Maps/Nav or YouTube/Hulu (or other data intensive) was running as those apps will drain it much faster.
Hello all, I have been using the d2spr for quite some time... without mobile. I have no service on the phone and have no problems using it as an esspresso device like my p5113 tab 2. On my tab two there was a thread about removing the cell from the device, which I will more than likely have to look up again for that device. Is this possible for this phone? Anyone have any experience removing cell from the phone. I have read that searching for signal reduces the battery life, and I have yet to try it on the phone. If anyone can give me any pointers on this would be great. Also if you know which files to delete would save me a crap load of time searching for it.... thanks in advance...

not exactly I use it as a voip phone and remote control as well as play various games, though there is no service on it, it shows the mobile connection. With the tablet it was a wifi only tab so removing cellular feature from android really increased battery life. Though I was not sure if it would work the same on the d2spr... not quite sure where to start though so thought I would ask, but thanks for the alternative, I am not sure about using airplane and wifi together as I have not tried that before.

gotcha. well, if youre using strictly voip, then the airplane mode and then turning wifi back on separately will work very well. like i said, ive done that with other devices and it substantially increases the battery life. Give it a whirl, what can it hurt?
Just an update with the steps on what I did.. as well as the results. With rooted device I deleted the 3 folders telecom, telephone, and another that starts with a tele that I can not think of. They are located in system/priv-app folder on root of system. (Using root explorer) After that I reboot, and all is working fine with no cellular at all. I have been letting it sit just to see how long the battery lasts on standby. So far I am at 28 and a half hours... I still get notifications and wifi works smooth. In the battery section in settings it currently reads charge remaining 8 days. Anyone with no service like me might want to give it a try... if something does not work all you have to do is re-flash what ever rom you had and that will put the folders back. and install cellular on the phone again... I would say that is the number one battery drain of the phone next to the display...
Day seven of my battery test and So far it appears that without cellular on the d2 you can get up to 10 days of standby charge. I did not use the phone at all for anything but to check status. Also, If you notice the small change in the curve, it is because it downloaded updates. It was connected to the internet the entire time...
Hello everyone,
I hope all the pixel 6 pro owners are not suffering from high blood pressure lol
I've bought the pixel 6 pro few months ago and kept hoping it'd be better by updates. and indeed it improved a lot with time except one annoying issue: The insane mobile network's battery usage.
As you can see in the screenshot, it takes more than 30% of my battery to just be idle on LTE with data off. not even a game uses that much of power.
I contacted Google, they asked me to return it but since I live in Morocco it's impossible due to the insane customs' taxes, so I just have to live hoping they'd fix it with an update.
what I noticed is that this issue isn't present in custom roms. I also noticed that many people are still facing this issue to this day.
I reported the bug many times using the feedback app in the QPR beta yet got no replies.
Take out the trash, Facebook.
Try a network reset.
Find the apps sucking the bandwidth. All cloud apps are prime suspects. A logging firewall would be helpful for this. Firewall block all apps that don't need internet access.
Disable all Google, app and carrier feedback.
Malware is also a possibility.
Finally factory reset if you suspect malware and/or can't track down the cause(s). Be aware it may reoccur so it's always better to find the root cause when possible.

That sucks. Maybe a hardware issue... I know that's the last thing you want to hear. It may be an antenna problem rather than the mobo.
Does it get better with the data on? Have your carrier do a network reset on their side.
Double check all configurations for the mobile data. Try clearing the data in the SIM toolkit app if it has that. Not sure how the SIM is managed on that maybe it's misconfigured. Try temporarily disabling Google play Services and see if that helps.
If you have a good local shop sometimes a second pair of eyes can spot the issue.

You need to find what's causing it then. Perhaps a system apk is endlessly polling another service or the internet. Make sure it's not a rootkit... Android 12 had a huge hole that Google plugged earlier this year. It doesn't apply to me so I'm not up to speed on it. Try flashing with the latest stable stock rom or simply go with what works.
It maybe they had to substitute a smaller chipset or component during a production run due to supply issues and the current firmware inadvertently wasn't configured properly for it. If so eventually they will correct the firmware more than likely. Samsung is notorious for doing that, Google probably does it too.
Fun times...

Unless you "have" to use the facebook app, which is a battery hog,
just go to m.facebook.com, the mobile site. Less battery drain and when you close
your browser, there isn't any app running that you don't know of.
Forget that percentage number, over the various updates I have had it be anywhere from 5% to 50% and it has made absolutely zero difference to how long the phone lasts during the day.
Are you actually not getting through a day on the battery? If you are then forget about that number as its not really telling you anything.
The mobile network drain is due to the Samsung radio chip they chose, it was known to be a battery hog even 4 years ago. They use a different, more efficient over in the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro
