ROM flashing/battery problem: I've flashed a couple ROMS lately and I think I have the process down, however, I'm getting a massive drain on battery when I put a custom ROM on. Can anyone think what I have been doing wrong?
I ALWAYS odin to DK28, then root with one click root 2.5.5. I also always wipe everything 3 times.
I have tried with and without an sd-ext partition, which I did manually by formatting my card with 1 large FAT32 partition, then a 1GB ext4 partition . I tested going back to stock and going to the leaked DK28 with no ROM and those didn't drain my battery as much. I did follow the calibrating battery instructions on the xda forums (charge to full with phone on, turn off phone, charge to full, turn phone on, turn phone off, charge to full off, then wipe battery stats). This didn't help either. I'm confused why I'm having this issue when everyone else seems to be having great battery life on their ROMs. Thanks in advance for everyone's help.
Examples of my problem - on stock or leaked DK28, my battery lasts 1-1.5 days with normal usage. With both latest versions of Nebula and Bonsai, I have been barely getting a half day's usage before my battery dies. Also, leaving the phone on at night, I can last through the night with about 10-20% drain on the stock and DK28, with ROMs, the battery is dead the next morning.
Not sure what you're issue might be, just wanted to respond so you didn't feel ignored.
Sounds like you've done everything right.
I did notice poor battery life with bonsai. It's a really beautiful rom. I loved the esthetic. But my battery life was awful. Now I run nebula which for me has had decent battery life. But none of this matches what I used to get with custom kernels on eclair. .. Ah for source code.

I'm having the exact same kind of problem on my Epic 4G...I'm running midNIGHT 1.5 but I have the Yoobao 2800mAh battery which I was consistantly averaging 2+ days with whatever kind of usage. Now I can only get about maybe 18 hours out of it with even light usage. Ill take it off the charger @ 8am and by 11 am I'm @ 75%...and its not even a sleeping problem.
Here's the thing doe....ill have the phone powered on with the charger and it will read saaayyy 25%...if I power it off the green battery meter will show it nearly full at around the 90% full mark....I do switch ROM's occasionally but this is only a recent prollem. And if I power it back on within th same 5 minute window...it will read something like 50%....I don't understand how this is happening...any help would be appreciated y'all.

Hey Dreams, what is the android folder on sd? Somehow root explorer shows me having two of them.

Sorry caught up today. I was telling both of you. Last ditch effort and besides you should delete that folder before any flash. You probably got 1 folder named android and 1 named (dot) .android. If not, delete them both. It stores cache files like album thumbs. Sometimes when my gallery is tripping (slow load images) the battery is also dropping while im looking at it.

Thank you to everyone that responded! I don't feel like the only one anymore. I have tried formatting the SD card before flashing, so no Android folder at all, just the zip files. *sigh* Thanks for reading and if any of you have any more suggestions, let me know!

I can't speak for roms because I dont run any. I get a full day out of 2 batteries. I flash constantly which drains fast. I noticed on dk28 after repeated flashes a few things start happening. Gallery loads slow, battery drains while watching it, flutters trying to scroll. This usually does the trick.

hey guys, long term lurker here and i have taken the plunge and rooted my phone at last.
ok i got a questions which has been bugging me
i have recently flashed the GingerBurst Sense 2.1 |Android 2.3.3 |Jun 27| Stable Data2SD
i could not wait and flashed it on around 10% battery, i have flashed other ROMS (oxygen, cyanogen, leedroid) before going with gingerburst.
charging the battery is taking alot longer then usual on this ROM while i was on the other roms this was not the case.....altho i have to say that i did flash those on full battery yesterday and charging the battery was normal like before i rooted.
6 hours on and the battery has only reached 70% charge and in that time i could have charged the battery 3 times over by now.
i have looked for an answer (could not post over at dev section due to being new here) but it mentioned something about wiping battery stats ?
would this help and do i wait for the battery to reach 100% before doing this ?
also like to add that i love this ROM its nice and quick with tons of space i need for work email and gmail and space for apps that i need (some apps not being able to shift to SD) and this is using a class 2 card for the time being.
thanks again guys great job on ROM
tried re-calibrating the battery?
there's an app for it too in the market
Will give it a try when I get to 100%
Battery. Tried everything else.
Cheers

Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
problem with that is i need my phone, don't have a spare lying around as i got rid of those at the supermarket old phone bin. (big mistake i now know ) will have to pick up a spare cheap phone as i cannot miss calls or get it diverted to house phone.
it also runs down alot faster as well. i had 40% around 9am this morning around 2.30-3pm gone.
thinking of getting the calibration done and if that does not sort it then go back to stock firmware.
ok after much waiting around, battery life on this rom is really rubbsih, it drains really quickly (i used set CPU to unclock it and yet same result)
i think i will go back to starburst, hopefully that sorts out the problem i have on this rom
when i was on stock it was fine no battery drain, and charges fast as usual. hopefully starburst is the same, or my battery has gone
Yeah, it really sounds like you need to re-calibrate your battery. I've had the same issue a few times when flashing different roms.

i did calibrate my battery last night when i got to 100% using the calibration tool from market.......this tool required root.
how else do you calibrate battery without using this method ?
I found a post about using different kernals that improve battery life over at starburst site
Edit: due to being new user cannot link
starburst.droidzone.in/starburst-rom-home/resources/improving-battery-life/
now does anyone know if there is something similar for gingerburst ?
I've ran all of droidzone's roms (except gingerburst) and have not any issues with battery drain compared with stock, if you use setCPU, you can even gain some.
I would advise to recalibrate your battery, go to recover and wipe the stats as well and give it a good two weeks to see how it is.

i was ok on using leedroids rom and had no issues with battery, i was on starburst (very briefly tho) and did not detect any problems.....but if this continues i may go back to it.
ok i will calibrate battery first then wipe the battery stats in recovery in advance section.
will see how it goes for a few days. cos i was like 15% battery this morning and literally in 20mins it had shut down (lucky i was half awake otherwise i would have fell asleep again with no alarm and missed work).
on stock rom (before rooting) it would have lasted at least 1hr+ with the same battery level.
im waiting on a class 10 card hopefully in the morning.

Edit: well after following your advice on calibration then wipe battery data, i have noticed that the charge is staying on 100% after i unplug it. before when i unplugged the charge it used to plummet to around 96% and i barely touched anything. now its more like how it was before where its 100% and i have played around a bit and its still 100%
many thanks
New SD Card Format or use reinstall script ?
Ok Now the phone has stablised a bit, just got the new memory card, now i cannot find the information for this.
now i have this memory card gparted (using the live cd) in a usb adaptor for it.
now question is how do i get this working on the ROM ?
do i shutdown, put in new memory card, then boot into recovery ?
then do i use the Data2SD installer ? or the reinstaller for the new card ? or do i have to wipe clean and start over ?
i know alot of people would be wondering the same thing and i could not find an answer for it.

Thanks for the answer, gonna do a titanium update on the current card then i will do the new one in the morning.
was not sure if i would use the reinstaller or the normal install, now that is cleared up i can look forward getting a nice lag free interface
Been using the ROM for 2 weeks and have seen battery life back to normal but had to disable sync on my gmail. This is a bit rubbish.
Also noticed that sense crashes a lot when gaming or browsing the web or when on flash sites. So it takes time to reload and more time wasted when making calls and reading messages. Also lags when using alarm and putting on new widgets.
May go back to an older sense version for stability.

Recently purchased the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S2 and I flashed Beastmod v4.2 onto it. I'm experiencing a lot of battery drain, approximately 10% an hour with very minimal usage. I flashed the same ROM onto an identical SGS2 and the batterylife on that one is great. I've tried reflashing Beastmod but still getting the same issues. Anyone knows whats going on or how to resolve this?
How are you flashing it? Wipe everything and fix permissions?
Sent from my SGH-T989
I flashed it following the directions on the Beastmod thread in development.
1. Download it and place it at the root of your SD Card.
2. Boot into recovery.
3. Factory Reset then wipe cache.
4. Flash the ROM then wipe dalvik cache.
5. Reboot!
Beastmod is still 2.3.5, you should consider flashing one of the 2.3.6 ROMs and maybe updating your Radio to the latest , much better battery seems to come with the newer update ...

Why would there be such a large discrepancy in battery life though from one T-Mo SGS2 with Beastmod to the other? That's what is making me scratch my head.

There is a BIG change in 2.3.6 in battery life, at least what I am seeing and others have reported, some say it is the ROM some say it is the radio , I am using both, I get better battery life, but overall the SGS2 Hercules is a battery hog ...

A lot of this can be due to signal strength. If you're in an area where you're constantly disconnecting/reconnecting to the towers, or you're just below the acceptable level for 4g, it might be switching between 3 and 4g, draining your battery.
Another thing to note, you usually want to run a rom for a couple of days before you start judging battery. It takes a while sometimes to build the dalvik-cache, and calibrate the battery. Sometimes as much as 3 full charges.
Lastly, look at what you have running on your phone. If you've tried tons of different roms, and they all drain, chances are it's an app you have that's misbehaving causing wake-lock. I'd try downloading system tuner from the market, and first going into the startup section. Remove ANYTHING that doesn't need to run in the background. You'd be amazed how many apps run at startup that really shouldn't, at least until you start them yourselves. Battery spy and cpu spy can be useful for troubleshooting what's draining your phone as well.

From the OP, it sounds like you have more than one SG2 phone available to you. Try swapping batteries to see if the same rapid discharge occurs where transferred.

I did try this but the issue with the draining is still there.
Have you tried changing kernels? Each phone responds differently to kernels and like some more than others. I've tried everyone and Faux's "stock" kernel works the best on my phone. It's UV, on stock speeds with a screen off profile.
To make sure your phone is actually going into deep sleep check the app CPU spy on the market. it'll tell you what clocks your phone is running through and staying at for the most time.
Also, check out System Tuner to see what rogue apps could be running constantly in the background [se Bloatware Freezer to freeze or remove apps as necessary] as well as if your 2nd core is staying offline and not staying on when it's not needed.
I would also throw your phone into airplane mode and compare the drain with no data activation to how you normally keep it to check if the 3G/4G toggling is draining your battery.
EDIT: Please read this entire thread, there's some good info. Every phone and every situation is different, however it turns out my battery drain was the result of my phone not hitting "Deep Sleep". The culprit was my SD card, if you're experiencing battery drain after upgrading to ICS try removing your SD card and restarting your phone, use the app CPU SPY to verify your phone is now hitting "Deep Sleep". Again please read on, amidst some trolls there is more detailed information.
SIDENOTE: This being my first thread I have to say on the whole I really like this community!
I never thought I'd be that guy saying don't upgrade to ICS, because the OS is so slick and fun. However the glitch with the battery drain nullifies it's value. My brand new phone, less than two months old will die before the end of the day without me making a single phone call. I'm talking maybe an 1 to 1.5 hours of use texting, checking mail, surfing, and my battery now runs dead before I even get home from work. If you go into Settings > Battery it will show you the break down of what's using what. At the top should be your display, it takes a lot of power for to run the ultra bright display and this is what I saw before the ICS update. After the update these are the numbers:
Android OS: 58%
Screen: 18%
Cell Standby: 10%
Phone Idle: 7%
Android System: 2%
The OS is taking 58% of the battery?!? This is crazy! The buzz going around the net is if you do a factory reset it will fix the issue, well it does, but only for a very short time.
I went through the pain and formatted my SD card, then did a factory reset on my phone lost everything, well I backed it up, but still was a long process. After all that I loaded up my apps, and everything looked great. If you I went into the battery break down Screen was back at the top and the Android OS was several rungs below. I was SO happy! It was worth it after all.... THEN
Imagine my chagrin I woke up this morning to a full charge. Didn't make one phone call, just checked a couple emails, and being only a HOUR into my day my battery is at 76%!! I look back at the battery break down, and there's Android OS sitting at the top, draining double the battery juice as the screen display. I mean this almost makes ICS useless, what good is this great cell phone if you have to be tethered to a power cord. WTF!! Point being, don't bother resetting your phone, it DOES NOT permanently help. If you haven't upgraded to ICS don't, we're all just screwed until they come out with a fix, and you see how long it took them just to get ICS.
I don't know what happened between last night and today, but my hope is some dev person will read this and it will help them pinpoint the issue.

Having a bad battery would not make Android OS use the majority of his power though. I have had this problem myself in the past and never did figure out exactly what stopped it. Running Blue Kuban now and my battery life, though never great, is reasonable. FYI, I also run Juice Defender which makes a substantial difference for me.
Running pretty much stock ICS FF18, just have agat safe recovery/kernal installed. Yesterday I left Wimax on all day and when I went to charge it last night it had about 28% left. I made several phone calls, many texts/whatsapp messages, reading emails and using twiitter/fb a couple of times.
The battery life on this is not the greatest, for example, I forgot to turn off wifi when I left my house the other day, well my battery dropped about 30% in just a few hours. I now find that just leaving Wimax on all day is actually better and pretty much on par with just having 3G on, I prefer wifi at home but if I forget to turn it off it kills my battery.
I was so used to Blazers 4.1 battery life, the battery lasted forever and I could leave wifi, bluetooth etc on all day. Just hoping for the ROMs to start incorporating the recently released source so that we can get better battery life on these great ROMS.
This is all known information. That's why you use custom roms that have much better battery life.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
I had same issue here with custom rom FF18 touched by SGS3. Went back to EL29, FF18 is glitchy and slower anyway.
Confirmed, factory reset battery drain exists.
OP, why don't you put up a screenshot of your battery graph? The expanded one, not the one that lists the percentages.
There are a number of reasons why this could be happening. One of my biggest drainers on CM9 was Google login service, turned out the "keep this device backed up with Google" in the backup and reset settings was completely preventing my phone from going to sleep. This is but one example.

I'm a super n00b, if you or someone could link me to the best ICS ROM the cool kids are using I can figure out how to install it.
-----
However bottom line, before ICS upgrade my battery life was great and my Android OS was not 50% of my battery power. I'm not rooted or have any custom anything, after the ICS upgrade my battery drains rapidly. I'm willing to do what it takes to get it fixed, however I do fully put the blame on ICS, I'm using stock everything, the battery is good, something in that update is screwing my battery.
All I was trying to do was give developers, a little insight that the factory reset temporarily fixed the issue, for 3-4 hours before bed I monitored it and everything was good. So hopefully this will help turn the light bulb on in someone else's head.

ICS works really well for some, but for others it renders the phone completely useless. I'm one that it won't work for as well. The battery life is **** and 4g connectivity is non existent. As a result, I'm back to EL29/GB until a patch is made.
I spent 4 days after teh OTA was released trying to find fixes, trying to make it work, using different kernals and modems, but had no success. I posted about it many times and more or less was told that I was doing it wrong.
On that not, good luck mate. Here's to hoping for a patch from samsung soon. :good:

I have a thread stickied in general called "welcome to he et4g" that might be a good place for you to start, from there you'll figure out what you need to search for to learn more... there is no best rom its a matter of opinion, so read the dev threads and see what looks good to you... bottom line without seeing more information from you I would guess you have something running in the background preventing deep sleep, as mentioned earlier... also are you leaving wifi, Bluetooth, etc on? That'll kill your battery quick... do you live in an area with poor sprint signal? Constantly searching for service will also drain you battery. What do you have to set up to sync? And how often? There are easy ways to prolong battery life on ff18 and the vast majority of people complaining about battery life have not taken positive steps to learn more and resolve their own issues... it can be done, good luck

A few days ago I decided to try out ktoon's kernel. I was getting horrible battery life and there is a distinct possibility I did not give it enough time to settle as some have said. One person suggested I get Better Battery Stats, but at the paid app part, I didn't bother and went back to stock kernel.
Since then I have found the thread here and installed it to see what was going on. Fully charged battery unplugged and left idle.. When I woke up I had 8 hours of time on the battery and 92% left.. I was happy with this... A quick game of Angry Birds Star Wars later, and I am down to 88%... Now it has been an hour and a few random things later (Angry Birds Seasons, uninstalling bloat via titanium backup) and I am down to 78%.. 10% gone in an hour?
I am just a bit on the very confused side. I was getting 18 hours or so of decently heavy use prior to flashing a custom kernel. Now, I could just be checking my phone more and not noticing it and causing some bias here, but I am at a loss. One member seems to think I have a hardware problem causing my battery drain and that I should replace my device, but I figure it doesn't hurt to seek a second opinion.
As for the ROM I am on, it is just the stock LJ7 with a few theme tweaks I have done and removed some bloat.
Perhaps I am just looking too deep assuming something is wrong..
EDIT: I just followed a tip by Naddict to stop Google Maps from reporting anything.. Hopefully that helps a bit..
Same I think I get good battery life randomly like for instance any ROM or kernel I try I get random battery life sometimes 10+ hours sometimes 7 or less and I do my best at optimizing my phone to save battery I switch brightness to zero no sync at all juice defender ultimate was also tried lol

Could you post kernel alarms. I mentioned the potential for SD issues basically it works this way. You have cached information that doesn't get wiped the program accesses it and basically because for instance the ktoonsez kernel contains newer linaro or the fact it's based on 4.12 those small difference make the cache potentially poisonous.... another example is corruption of the partition causing media scanner to basically endless loop another example network spoofer if it crashes while running corrupts dalvik and requires a wipe. Or your SD card it's failing. Just examples

Forgot to mention, when I wrote the OP, I had already switched back to stock kernel. Phone is plugged in charging atm, I'll have that screen shot for you in the morning if you still need it.
I can't complain with these results here... Since I did a few things when I got up, I lost 1%. But over night I only lost 7%
What am I doing wrong. 4 hours after a full charge and I'm at 28%. I used the phone for a total of an hour today between Facebook, YouTube and Internet browsing. Almost dead, WTF!! Please someone help me fix this. I have each frequency undervolted 115 MHz and its pretty stable. I also keep mobile data always off when not using it. So why is my battery life so horrible.
In using freegs3 jellybean.

I've read a lot of people on here complain about the facebook app just sucking the battery away.. Some choose to use the mobile site to connect.. Try uninstalling facebook and seeing how it goes.

Do you have better battery stats? It will show if anything is running when screen is off then you can at least narrow it down. What Rom are you on?

recently flashed to the freegs3 rom with stock kernal and touchwiz launcher. I have already changed to two file names and added .bak to then of the file names and rebooted. My android system is at 40% after 6.5 hours of use. My phone is at 54% and usually would be at about 75% when i used MIUI or Blazer. Anybody have any suggestions?

thank you
i looked through that whole forum and its not really any of my settings. My android system is taking all of the battery where as when i was on MIUI and Blazer rom, id get wayyyy better battery life on. I seen that qbking said that the battery life is better on this rom than on blazer so it doesnt make any sense that im at 40% after 8 hours. Before it could be 6 p.m. and i would still have 70%

Well you could have wakelocks, too many apps running in the background, maybe your phone keeps scanning for reception that isnt there (as in you have unnecessary radios turned on)
Try using BetterBatteryStats and it'll give you a ton of info about whats draining your battery
And did you just recently switch to FreeGS3? It usually takes a couple cycles before you start seeing the true battery life, so give it some time before you reach a verdict
i have all the settings the same as they were on blazer rom and MIUI. There is a reason that android system is using 2x the ammount of battery than the screen is. Not to sound cheap but i cant afford to buy the app to check my battery stats, but like i said this never happened on those 2 roms and most everyone else is reporting amazing battery times on this rom. I love this rom alot and dont want to have to switch back. I guess ill see what happens in the next two days

Yeha I understand about the money issue, I'm pinching pennies myself because life is hard. But try to get one of those free ones if you can then, it takes a couple of those to equal what BBS does, so look around and see what you can find
