[Q] Preferred Wireless Tether - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am now on the latest Bonsai and would like to add a wireless hotspot app. I need the infrastructure mode as I tried the one that only had ad-hoc before and my permissions on my work laptop would not allow me to connect. I see the mobile ap thread on the i9000 section. Is that the preferred way to go?
Thanks.

If you need infrastructure then mobile ap is the only way to go. So far it only works on eclair and not the froyo leak.

Is the wireless hotspot free?

I know it works on Sense based roms because I used to tether my devices while connected to 4G almost daily before I got rid of my DSL and went back to Roadrunner Internet Service. Keep in mind that I was using the Wireless Tether app. I don't see why it shouldn't work on CM7. Are you using the Wireless Tether app or Sprint's Hotspot feature? If it's the latter, it is my understanding that the "hacked" Sprint Hotspot app only supports 3G, but if you're paying Sprint for the feature, you have 4G capabilities with it.
Well I'm using CM7's hotspot feature but I'll definitely try out the tethering app and get back to you.

Okay. No problem. If it's not pre-installed by default with CM7, you can download it for free via the Market....

[Q] Wifi Tether AP or Infrastructure

Which Tether app is working on the Epic Touch 4g that you can run AP or Infrastructure and use 3g or 4g service?
Thanks in advance.
wifi tether for root users in the market works for me (must have root) and is adhoc only.
but seems to wor over 3 and 4g just fine.
looking for a way to get infrastructure mode.
edit Infrastructure possible using the sprint hotspot hack from the dev section
but at the moment is 3g only and requires a deodex rom.
looking into getting one of the experimental versions of wifi tether with infrastructure mode working correctly on our phones (should be possible but no promises)

Tried the experimental versions of wifi tether, and I'm still not able to get infrastructure mode for the Epic 4g Touch working. While I was changing the setting for what kind of device I'm using, it looks like only the Adhoc option is enabled for all Samsung phones. If I tried to select an HTC phone and do softap, that didn't work either.

any update on this? would love to have infrastructure
I am using the 3.1 beta 6 version and I think it's working in infrastructure mode. My Asus tab doesn't like adhoc mode and it is working on this beta, so I am assuming infrastructure is working. Encryption doesn't though, but then I have never managed to get that working on this app, with this phone or my old Evo.

Wireless Tether not working on rooted SGSIIE4GT running on Zedomax v3.

Took the leap 2 days ago and rooted my Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch using Odin and the Zedomax v3 kernel. Root went fine and after a short minute I was rooted and installing Titanium Backup Pro, ROM Manager Pro and Wireless Tether For Root Users.
Having (free) wifi tethering is a must for me as I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (wifi version 32GB Grey) and need network access when out abroad and in the car. After installing the app from the market, I promptly opened it up and started tethering with all of the default settings (no encryption, ssid = AndroidTether, access control is disabled). The app shows that tethering is activated with no errors and broadcasting the signal. Now I switch to my SGT10.1 and open up network settings but there is no AndroidTether network seen. I refreshed multiple times and still nothing. So I grabbed a few other wifi devices (laptop, blackberry) and still, no AndroidTether network is seen.
I have checked the in-app Wireless Tether Log and there are no errors or failures. I have tried rebooting the SGSIIE4GT and still have same issues. I flashed back to stock kernel (rooted) and still have the same issues. Then removed root, rooted agin with Odin to Zedomax v3 and still same issues. Went to the distribution page for Wireless Tether and downloaded other beta and prior stable versions of the app and still same issues.
Soooo.... then I thought, maybe the hardware that broadcasts the wifi signal is busted. So I flash back to stock, unroot and go to sprint today. They activated my Sprint Hotspot service and BOOM! Pull out my SGT10.1 and the network is right there. Connect to it and it works just fine.
What is frustrating is my brother bought an SGSIIE4GT as well, we have the same hardware versions and running the same ROM and kernel and he can tether with no problems.
Not sure what could be causing the problems but hope I can get it sorted soon. Would very much appreciate any insight from anyone on new things to try. Anyone even having the same problems?

My guess it is because the Galaxy Tab doesn't support ad-hoc wifi tethering, which is what the wifi tethering app you're using broadcasts in. Had the same problem when I was trying to use it with my Touchpad. You will need a tethering app that supports infrastructure mode to be able to tether to your tablet.
Fortunately, Necrosan has been able to hack the built in Sprint Hotspot app (that uses infrastructure mode) to get free 3g tethering. That thread is here [HACK] [EG30] Hotspot Hack (3G Only for now)
You will need to be rooted and be using a deodexed EG30 rom, but there a quite a few of those around. I'm using [ACS][Odin]Stock EG30 Deodexed with Root 3.0/Busybox 1.18.4 and it is working great for me. Haven't even had LOS yet.
After you get all this done you should be able to use the Sprint Hotspot app and tether to your Galaxy Tab. Mine has been working great with my Touchpad so far. Hope this helps!
:-\
My brother (as stated above with the same hardware and software) tethers just fine to his SGT10.1 and his iMac....
Sent from Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 using Tapatalk.
To make sure its really broadcasting you should use a laptop or another computer with wifi to look for the SSID. If you see your device then the problem is probably the one stated above. If not, then there is definitely something else wrong
EDIT: just read that you already tried this. Sorry man, don't know what to tell you :/ If the Sprint Hotspot worked then I would just used the hacked version I mentioned previously to avoid paying monthly for it
Thanks for the responses, will give this a go sometime this week. Thanks for your help mate.

I've found that "Wireless Tether for Root Users" does not work for me on the ET. It acts like it is, but I can never see the SSID.
Try Barnacle Wifi Tether, it is working great for me.
Try this hopefully it works. I am getting my SGII today and this is main reason for rooting...

Is anyone able to get android-wifi-tether to work on LG2?

I just rooted (teamepic cwm+root.zip) and installed the android wifi tether. Wifi tether is not working. I went to the QBKing thread in development, and see that others are having similar wifi tether problems. Does anyone have wifi tether working on an LG2 release? I am considering flashing back to a stock LF9 if sprint managed to bork the wifi tether with their latest release.
TIA.
works for me

After my laptop connects to the tether, I can't actually get out to the internet. It's like the NAT is not working. checking the IP stack on my laptop, I am getting the right ip address, gatway, etc assigned. Wifi tether shows the laptop connected. But I can't do anything.
I followed the QBKING video step by step (except using a different password for encryption). I have the Samsung Galaxy Nexus (LTE/CDMA) profile selected. I've tried some others in desperation, but none are working.
I think I'll try uninstall/reinstall of wifi tether, or maybe just use foxfi now that i am rooted.
go to settings of the wifi tether app if you havent already and set it to enable the security settings so that youll need a password on any device you enable to use your phones internet signal and that should work because i was having that problem with the wifi tether app on my evo 3d and when i enabled security protection that allowed additional devices to connect to the internet. on my galaxy s3 i havent had any problems like that cause i intiially started with this method and ive been up and running just fine and im in houston so it seems the 4g lte is up and running here cause my phone shows 4g at the top for signal and my pages load up on the phones web searches faster than when its connected to my uverse wireless modem. hope this helps you man.

Ok if you didn't already, try gnex gsm instead. Also does the tether app show any numbers moving or do they stay at 0.0. Make sure your version of the tether app is up to date as well. And disable wake lock is unchecked in settings
I had the same issues as the op. With wireless tether change profile to galaxy nexus gsm not cdma and you must use access control. Then you should PROFIT......

Are you using the "WiFi for Rooted Users" app? If so be sure to change your Device-Profile.
Open App>Settings>Change Device-Profile> Select Samsung Galaxy Nexus (CDMA/LTE)

Has anyone had a chance to try this? Did it fix the intermittent connection problems? I am going to try it later, because wifi tether is still not working for me (LG8) using Galaxy Nexus CDMA/LTE and with the access control disabled. I am just curious to see if anyone has this working as using the GSM profile is counter-intuitive for Sprint.

I tried it and the wifi tether still doesn't work. Half the time I start it, it requests Superuser and "starts" but there is no SSID being broadcast and I don't think the wifi radio is actually turned on. Every once in a while, it will broadcast the SSID, and I can connect but the up/down data stay at 0.00kb. Other times, I can connect, and I see the up/down data slowly incrementing, but I can't actually get out to the internet (or FTP, or telnet or....).
I guess I'm just fooked until foxfi or android wifi tether for root actually release a specifically-supported SGS3 version of their apps.
My issues were i could see the ap but not fully connect or allow internet access. Make sure your using access control it will not work with out it. Also make sure you have routing fix checked and use auto not ad hoc.

I'll give that a try, thanks.
*edit* I'm starting to wonder if this is an LTE-related thing. After a bit of testing, it seems like the tether works ok if I am on a 3G connection, but when I'm on LTE is when it won't work.

[Q] WiFi Tether enable or working app?

Hey all,
Does anyone have a wifi tethering app suggestion? or specific settings to set on a particular app to get wifi tethering working?
I'm rooted using MotoChopper. I tried WiFi Tether for Root Users and I can get the app to start just fine but my the network doesn't appear to be broadcasting as I can't see it on any other devices.
I can't use the built in hotspot feature because it's not enabled on my plan.
I understand it's early in the development stages for the SGS4 but just seeing if anyone has a workaround for the time being.
Thanks,

Some strings need to be edited in the framework to change where the traffic get directed to so T-Mobile doesn't see you are tethering. Then you will be able to use the native app/toggle.

does it provide free tethering? or are you on a tethering data plan?
Is it possible to redirect all tethered traffic through a VPN and therefore circumvent t-mobiles tether detection?
E.g. set up an SSH tunnel with port forwarding on the phone and then set your phone as a proxy server on your PC?
Or, if t-mobile only uses user-agent detection, can you simply use a VPN directly from your PC? As all traffic is then encrypted, t-mobile should no longer be able to identify its origin.
im on my unlimited plan, and the free version is limited to a small bandwidth limit. 8 bucks for the full version and no additional fees.
