Flashing Radio - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I noticed some radio issues with my stock radio firmware.
Now I want to keep at my stock Rom (1.39), but I want to update to 12.28e.x-version, but this one came with 1.72/1.75 update.
Can I just flash 12.28e-radio on my stock (1.39) rom or or do I need to update my rom to 1.72/1.75 before the new radio will work properly?
My phone has already been rooted & S-off'ed, but not sure if radio is linked with the rom version.
I hope someone can help me

Don't flash yet, someone will so for sure but I'm fairly sure you can't flash a radio that's not for your ROM version. Better to wait for now then to brick.
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk

Ok, thanks for your warning/help

It is ok to flash any radio you want, radio and ROM are not directly linked. ROM just tells radio to do stuff, and radio does it in it's own way. So you are good to go
You will definitely not end up with a brick, just make sure that you have ENG S-OFF and Radio S-OFF.

Ok, Not sure what to do now xD
But to check my ENG S-OFF & Radio S-OFF, I need to go into Recovery Mode, right?
Which is Pressing Volume DOwn & Power button, right?
Do I need to shut down my whole system or just "hibernate" (normal Shut down)?
EDIT: Ok, i've checked the status, it's says something about "HTC ACE S-OFF".
Although i'm not sure if it's RADIO S-OFF or ENG S-OFF.
I've followed your (jkoljo) Root & S-Off guide ;-)

"Checking device state" in this post might help

Ok, thanks mate Haven't seen that thread good enough :-/ Shame on me :-(

Do I *need* SuperCID to flash the engineering bootloader?

Hey folks. I'm looking into updating to the latest radio, and so I've concluded it's finally time to get the engineering bootloader onto my phone. I have enough experience with my old G1 to not be super-nervous about it, but I have one quick question first.
When originally rooting using gfree back in late December, I decided to skip the SuperCID and SIM-unlock portions of the process. The wiki instructions for the eng-hboot, however, assume the user did all three options. With simply radio s-off, can I install the new bootloader, or do I need to go back and get SuperCID first?
Thanks for any help you can give.
You dont need an ENG Hboot to flash the new radio you can use the PC10IMG update method. Heres a link to the post with the download.
Thanks, joemm - reading through the various radio topics, I've gathered that you've been really helpful in providing PC10IMG files for people, and that's really appreciated.
My concern is if it turns out the new radio is worse than the old; it seems like the easiest way to go back to my current radio is through fastboot flashing, which is why I wanted to go to the eng hboot. I don't see a pc10img already out there with my current tmo, post-OTA radio (though it's listed in the mega-radio topic).
So, I guess my quesion is still open - do I need supercid to flash eng-hboot?
Actually I have a similar situation. I also skipped SuperCID and SIM-unlock when using gfree. (Not sure why I did, but Im sure it made sense at the time)
Anyway I have the eng hboot but would like to upgrade the radio.
Can I run gfree again to do the sim unlock and then upgrade the radio? Or upgrade to this radio - Vision_RADIO_12.28h.60.140f_26.06.02.27_M - and then run gfree again?
What does the sim-unlock change and supercid change acually happen anyway? I mean does it make a change to the radio itself?
Sim unlock makes a permission state change. Makes a 1 a 0, as I recall. Dunno bout SuperCID.
HTC Vision 1.8 OC, CM7 RC1==HAPPY!!
Thanks for the reply Daughain.
But where is that change made? is it made to the radio itself?

I don't think it changes the radio, because I've personally switched radios several times and I didn't have to unlock every time. Once, when I rooted the phone and that was it.

[Q] Flashing a ROM, it's been a while...

Hi, I have posted this before but it got deleted because I very stupidly posted it in the wrong place.
My question has been answered before due to searching but no one else happens to be in my EXACT situation and I don't want to mess up my phone.
Basically my Desire HD is rooted etc and I want to flash the Android Revolution ROM, but I havent flashed any ROM's since my OLD G1 and now everyone talks about S-OFF etc and I don't understand these, on my G1 it was simply rooting and flashing a Recovery and then flashing a ROM, so basically what do I need to flash this ROM
My situation:
I am running the stock ROM (permroot on 1.32.405.6)
I have stock radio
I have Clockwork mod 3.0.0.6
and Buzz Sense 1.3 + OC (OC'd 1.6Ghz) kernel.
(+Ever since I downgraded from 1.72 I have lost wi-fi, it connected to my wi-fi but I get no internet access through it, its definitely a problem with the phone and nothing else because I have tested my router etc, all my other devices have connectivity through my router)
We all were in your exact situation. The Desire HD employs an extra level of security to prevent users messing with their handsets, S-ON.
You need to turn this off, Ideally ENG (Engineering) S-OFF, before you can make persistent changes to your system.
Have a read through the very helpful guides in the Dev section. They also contain the tools you need. Turning S-OFF should be a one time process only, i.e once you've done it there is no need to repeat it to flash another ROM.
Hope that helps.

Sorry I forgot to mention that I have SHIP S-OFF and I'm unable to get ENG S-OFF because when I used the Easy S-OFF tool it can only give me SHIP S-OFF for some reason, I cant do anything now since its incompatible with my kernel as well. Can I flash a ROM with just SHIP S-OFF? I don't want to flash any radios because I bricked my G1 about 4 million times when flashing radios.
It you run a 1.32 WWE RUU and revert back to stock you can then reapply ENG S-OFF. A bit of a ball ache I know.
Most ROMs will work just fine with SHIP S-OFF but ENG is usually preferred.
To flash a radio you need Radio S-OFF another beast entirely. However there is a very good too to do it with. No bricks so far and your DHD will then have super CID and be SIM unlocked.

Just tick the "I have radio s-off" box and it becomes compatible with everything.
follow my guide in the sig and skip to eng s-off and radio s-off part, or skip to whatever comes next if you've already done them
Tried that, I get a "Connection Error", I have made sure its fully connected as "Disk Drive" and I allow the Super User request when I do it, but it still doesn't work, plus the radio tool just says "Incompatible kernel" - or something like that.
I mainly want to know, can I flash Android Revolution in my current situation, can I flash with just SHIP S-OFF and my current kernel, or do I have to go back to stock kernel, flash the ROM and then flash my kernel back?
and why should I have ENG S-OFF, if it makes a lot of difference I will give it ago, but I mainly want to just flash this ROM to see if it fixes my wifi issue and my camera doesn't drop so many frames! (known issue in 1.32, fixed in 1.7X)
Disk Drive. Yeah, read the guide again more carefully, mate... And change the tool, why are you using easy radio tool!? It won't give you ENG S-OFF. My ENG S-OFF tool will give you that. And it most definitely will not say incompatible kernel if you just tick the box I talked about.
You can flash ARHD now. Do not mess around with it's kernel after flashing, because it comes with the best kernel out there. The kernel has been made to fit ARHD's needs.

I get the same as every other time, downloads the Easy S-OFF tool, "Pushing stuff to SD" Phone says "Unknown has been granted su access" and then the tool says "Error: Connection Problem!" - I get this every time, I have tried re-downloading this software every time, removing the "Unknown" in super user and then re-allowing it when it asks, I still get the same error...
Does it matter that I'm using Windows 7 64-bit?
EDIT: I think I've done it now, I downloaded the latest 2.3 SDK (I had 2.2) which updated my ADB drives, I didn't get the error this time, will boot into H-BOOT and check now.
Are you still using that disk drive mode? Because you should not.
THANKS
I have thanked everyones post, I can confirm my H-BOOT Now says PVT ENG S-OFF, one last thing, I'm all good to flash now? I can just put the ROM (sense version) on my SD card and flash it in CWM, with my current kernel, even though it will over write it with the one included for Android Revolution, I dont have to go back to stock kernel or anything first right?
Thanks again
Have you flashed ClockworkMod Recovery yet? If not download ROM Manager from the Market and flash it from there.
Once that is complete, download ROM, put on SD Card, Recovery, Wipe, Flash, Enjoy.

[Q] Unrooting for insurance

I have seen some threads about un-rooting for warranty claims, but want a definite answer before doing anything.
My DHD has ENG S-OFF, Radio S-OFF and Clockwork Mod Recovery, and basically I want someone to be able to tell me/ point me in the direction of files and instructions for returning my handset to 1.32 stock with no superuser, custom recovery or s-off's of any kind.
Also, if the engineers where to update my phone like i know their prone to doing, is it still possible to downgrade back to 1.32 and root again to get my beloved MIUI back?

you can download a stock rom from the links on this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846248
And It'll take the HTC back to it's factory defaults, as if it was new. It'll probably be best to use the RUU (that's what it's called) for Orange UK (if your phone's locked to that, assuming you updated your operator)
HOWEVER! Running an OTA update to gingerbread from the new system'll leave you with a probably unrootable Desire HD (to check if it's still got the radio S-off at least, go into fastboot and check that the CID is just 1's)

So I would install this like a ROM through Clockwork Mod?
So would this RUU remove all of my custom recovery, and S-OFF's? It's just I wanna make sure it's all gone just in case....
So there is no way that these can be downgraded like 1.72 can be?
Narh, you don't flash it through clockwork mod, it's run from your computer. You'll need the HTC Sync application installed on your computer, and a sense rom to connect the phone via htc sync.
When you run the RUU, it'll tell you what to do. I think it removes a ENG S-OFF but but a radio S-OFF'll stay on the phone (it is more or less permanent). However, I don't think the radio s-off'll show up in fastboot that obviously.
The reason you can't downgrade the firmware on RUUs is because in the process of rooting, the phone's CID changes to 111111111 (or something) so the PD98IMG file for downgrading will refuse to work with the phone because of an "Incorrect CID"

Unroot US Cellular Desire

I have done a search and found a few helpful tips but nothing straightforward. I know there isn't a RUU for it. Long story short. My boss downloaded the official 2.2 update, it broke his wifi. He asked me to root it to see if a custom rom would fix it. I did and installed CM7 but wifi still doesn't work. Now he wants me to unroot it so he can get a replacement because he thinks it is a hardware problem. Anyway, I am going to attempt to flash the official 2.2 update to his phone which I am assuming unroots it. But, the phone will still be s-off, does anyone know how to flash an s-on hboot? If the wifi works when i reflash the 2.2 update I won't need to worry about the hboot but I hope there is a way. Thanks
Well looks like a found the 2.2 RUU. Will this unroot aswell as flash the stock hboot?
Yes, if you run a RUU, it will return everything to stock. But if you installed the CM7 with the newer partition layout (Bravo CM7 r2), then you should downgrade it first, and then run the RUU.
Edit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084 Watch this video here, it shows the process.

Downgrade the ROM?
No, downgrade the hboot. Enter into bootloader and check your hboot type: if it's CM7 r2 or Oxygen r2, then you need to downgrade them first before running a RUU. You can use the Bravo Downgrader on the Alpharev site.
Thank you for your help. One more question tough, on Alpharev's, it says that the Desire downgrader is for the GSM models but it makes no mention of the CDMA models, do yo know if it will still work?
Hm.. Now that's a very good question.. I don't have answer for that, sorry.

How to Radio S-off?

Hi.. I have a Rooted DHD but I wanna do Radio S-off as well. Is there any guide for this? I got this phone with a Custom Rom so I'm not sure which andriod it was shipped with.
Hi mate,
I believe this thread will answer your questions, I'm in the same boat thinking it may solve my random bootlooping issue...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=877295
I'm a little out of touch with the Desire HD (previously had a Desire with custom ROM, Radio S-Off, etc. etc. that ran perfect).
Let me know how you go, interested to give it a shot myself.
Interested too, as currently I am unable to successfully boot up the latest 4.2.x ROMs!

Use the guide and the thread in my signature. You will find all the information you need there. Just for precaution treat your phone as shipped with GB. It is not important with what OS it was shipped with, but what is running right now.

I know how to flash a new radio, I just wanna S-off my radio 1st b4 flashing a new 1. So basicially I'm looking for a guide to tell me how to S-off my current Radio.

That is dangerous if your device is running or was shipped with GB version of android. Flashing the ENG S-OFF or a froyo Hboot will miserably mess your bootloader. If you are already S-OFF you can flash the modified ENG S-OFF included in the Hack Kit.
Use the Advanced Ace Hack Kit:
http://tau.shadowchild.nl/attn1/?p=74
Be careful as somebody suggested because you can end up with a brick. Read the manual included.

That is because the tradicional ENG S-OFF had issues (severily messed) with the bootloader and put it in superslow motion. After a while the Hack Kit included a modified ENG S-OFF compatible with GB shipped devices...saves a lot of headaches
hmm
Thanks 4 ur replies guys. My DHD is Rooted with ENG S-OFF, I just wanted to flash a newer Radio to see if it gives better signal performance but I guess its too risky. I'd better not mess with this Radio S-OFF thingy .. Dont wanna endup with a brick ..
@glevitan - so with the Ace Hack Kit we can attain ENG S-Off and Radio S-Off?
How do we know if our device originally came with Gingerbread or Froyo?
Pretty keen to flash radio (constant drop outs) and give it a go, don't want to do the wrong thing though!
Edit: Ace Hack Kit - is it 1 step Radio S-Off, Eng S-Off etc.?
And can still flash through http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1106324 regardless of Radio S-Off?

Yes, the Hack Kit lastest version will flash ENG S-OFF, but it is not the tradicional ENG but a modified one to work with all devices regardless the Android version they were shipped with.
I guess that currently doesn´t matter what version was your device shipped with but the one it is running at the moment. Mostly all devices have been updated and so have the bootloaders, so the risk is for all the people who actually updated. The best is to treat your device as shipped with GB always just to avoid a headache.
You can always flash a radio in the PD98IMG.zip way, that it is the safest. Always make sure that you check the md5sum of the file and that the radio is for your device, as stated in that thread. You are S-OFF if you used the Hack Kit some time ago, but ENG S-OFF if you did it in the last year...If you are just S-OFF (check what it says in the hboot top left corner), you can flash the ENG S-OFF from the HAck Kit options.
I always flash radios in the PD98IMG way, safest thou not faster.
:good:
Maybe I'm missing a step there?
It says "parsing", and the radio doesn't update :-\

If the file is parsed and you are not prompted to update, then your sdcard might be corrupted (have you tried using a different one?) or the file is not named PD98IMG.zip correctly.
Ill try a different SD card,
The name of the file is IMG not 1MG yes? I named the file correctly, inside the ZIP archive is just the radio.img file.
Not sure why it did that, before it says parsing it comes with PD98DIAX or something and "no file found" then it lists PD98IMG and parsing.
Unfortunately I havent had much luck with this phone
I remember the Desire being a similar radio update process.

inside the zip you should have the img file and a .txt file, otherwise it won't flash

Ah I see, well the txt file is missing - ill have to check the radio thread again to see what the go is as I downloaded the radio zip archives from there.
