Nandroid & Clockwork - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I'm new to Android and I read everywhere about backing up with Nandroid & Clockwork.
As far I know, they both backup your whole current image to SD.
So they actually do the same thing, isn't it?
If I'm not correct, can someone please explain me, please?
Thanks in advance

You use the clockwork recovery to do a nandroid backup of your existing ROM.

Oh ok, thanks for the explanation

Hi there!
Just to be 101% sure before flashing any Gingerbread release, because my DHD is Greek, and finding the proper image to revert device to stock can be a real pain in the arse, please acknowledge the following statement!
If I fully backup my DHD with Nandroid, which is currently stock 1.32, does this mean that after a 2.3 flash, I will be able to re-flash my DHD to previous STOCK state using ONLY the Nandroid created backup files?
Thank you very much for helping out!

Yes I believe this is correct. Mind you can also flash the radio and that is separate.

Yes that is the main intention of keeping a nandroid backup...so that you can always revert back to whatever ROM you were using before if something goes wrong with the newer ROM

Files list
Hello !!!
Does someone have the list of which files are created by ClockWork in order to store them elsewhere than on the SD card in case we need to format the card ?
Thx

They are stored on your SDCard under the folder clockworkmod > backup...so just copy the whole backup folder in your pc before you format the sdcard and place it back under the same path...

Thanks for the reply!

Nandroid Backup Location

I'm looking to delete some of my old nandroid backups that I won't use, however I can't seem to locate them on my SD card, anyone know where I can find these backups at for purging? Thanks!
Edit: clockwork puts backups in /sdcard/clockwork/backup/<date> other recovery imgs put it in the nandroid folder on sdcard root.
Should have searched first. However I do have a follow up question,
what does the last set of numbers after the date mean,
2010-08-05.01.42.54
01.42.54? I'm not following the reasoning, thanks!
Yup. Here's my question. How do you APPLY one of your nand backups, since it's not a zip file that recovery will find. Thanks in advance.

Instead of installing from zip card, go into nandroid>restore and that should give you the choce of backups to restore to.
Eeeeek, those numbers represent the time that you made the backup.
Scott, in Rom Manager you can choose restore and find the folder you want to revert to
Hairongreenfire, thanks. I'm guessing the same is possible thru amonRA recovery? (I trust that recovery more than clockwork)
Thanks.

Rename?
If the backup files are renamed can this cause any problems with the restore process?

If you rename them don't add spaces: so mikg-311-03-29-12 is OK but mik g 3.11 03-29-12 will result in md5 sum mismatch

Stock nandroid restore also with flashable zip *updated 2/27/2012*

this a stock nandroid backup, there is no GOOGLE ACCOUNT associated with this. if you find superuser is gone you will need to get it from the market, same with rommanager.just extract and put it in >clockworkmod>backup on sd, then boot into recovery and restore backup.
if you are having problems with corrupt files on youre sd then i suggest saving clockworkmod folder and reformat sd then add the folder back with this inside the backup folder.
DOWNLOADS STOCK 2.2 RESTORE (WITH ROOT)
IF YOU ARE DOING THIS TO SEND THE PHONE BACK OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT AND PLAN TO TURN S-ON AGAIN BE SURE TO DO IT AFTER YOU FINISH THE RESTORE
IF YOU ARE ON CM7 WITH NEW RECOVERY, YOU MUST REVERT BACK TO OLDER CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY FOR THIS TO WORK
ALSO EVEN IF YOU DONT SEE CWM RECOVERY ITS STILL THERE(TRUST ME) YOU WILL NEED TO ADD STOCK RECOVERYhere is a link for stock recovery images (before and after update) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=843289
and here is a easy s-on again thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834225

FYI the phone is totally usable without ANY accounts setup. After I re-flashed mine with the stock image I didn't bother to sign in or create accounts for anything and the phone worked fine except not letting me use market until I did. So you may want to re-dump a nandroid w/o even a dummy account to avoid issues of "OMG PRIVATE DATAZ" from people in PMs.

I'm no longer removing links to NANDROIDS, users are aware that NANDROIDS contain private information and by uploading them and posting links to them on here you are saying you don't care. I have stickied a thread by a fellow community member as a fare warning.

No... people should make sure they know what they are doing before doing a backup.
For example, the stock rom on this phone "automatically" syncs some contact data with T-Mobile. Wipe the phone and make a backup, and before you get the chance to make the backup, that phone contact database has already be automatically downloaded from T-Mobile. If you don't do the wipe/backup right, you WILL end up posting your private data.

yes it includes the update. from what I understand there is no way to permanently unroot the phone until htc patches what we used to root in the first place . I maybe wrong but that's the way I understood it
Thanks for u help. I come from iphone jailbreak back ground and it seems android is little more complicated. I just need to get use to the android game.

No, just saying from my own experience when I re-flashed with the stock 2.2 zipfile to restore some system apps I had deleted, that the phone functioned fine w/o ever setting up any accounts on it. Just skipped through all the setup screens and started using it.
edit: Which is very different from the G1 (where I came from) that only allowed 911 calls w/o a Google Account setup.
By the way, when you say "Stock", is this PRE-OTA "Stock", or Post-OTA "Stock" ?

now I got it: you want to try to "restore" a nandroid backup taken on someone else's phone...? I'm not sure if this will work as I know that CWM seems to be very sensitive regarding the backup files - but I'm not absolutely sure about that (and sorry: no sense ROM here to try with)

I used to restore backups from my phone to my girlfriends phone all the time, it works fine but one thing I'd recommend is that if anyone is willing to do this make sure the backup is from a freshly wiped phone that hasn't been signed into a Google account or has any phone numbers saved etc etc as a nandroid contains a full snapshot of the phone including all personal details.

Sure, I'll get you one.
Just give me an hour or two to do a data wipe, backup and upload to Mediafire.
Alright, here you go.
Extract it to /clockworkmod/backup/

Sorry I didn't post 'till now. The nandroid backups didn't work. MD5 missmatch!
Have u changed the backups name? Then u get a md5 mismatch. Search the web to redo the md5 code on your backups and all is good.

yep, IIRC the backup has to reside in /clockworkmod/backups/<the-date-and-computer-time-of-the-backup> and the filenames must remain the same. Not sure about it but couldn't it also be a problem to use different versions of CWM?
i always rename my backups! by the way,he is talking about the 2 nandroids myself and lesicnik sent him from our phones respectively!!

I've read somewhere about restoring problems and someone mentioned that renaming could end up in CWM not finding the backups anymore (thus this has nothing to do with the md5 sum of course). It's probably depending on the version...?
Yep i know that you two made those backups - therefore my suggestion with the cwm versions...
Perhaps the files were corrupted during download (just to make sure: did you pack them? That might give issues, too, due to different packing/compression modes).
Swyped from my HTC Wildfire (Buzz)
I've recalculated md5 and the phone started restoring. But im the middle of the restore process the phone restarts in cwm. Could the internal memory have a fault or something?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
for the nand i sent you, event may be correct regarding version issues!! i use cwm 5.0.2.0 and you need a ext partition. you already said you dont use mtds so your internal memory should be ok providing you are of course making full wipes prior to flashing?
R.V.3 (MokeeOs)
didn't worked with 5.0.2.0 either. tomorow i will sell it for a low price just to escape from this stress. thank you all for the help you gave.

[Q]How to read ext4.win files?

Hey all,
I'm wondering how to read / extract a filename.ext4.win file?
Using Wugfresh's Nexus Root Toolkit, i recently flashed AOKP's JB build 2 to my Gnex, and wiped my phone in the process (intentionally).
The phone works great with the new ROM and all. but I forgot that my data folder also got wiped, and with it all my savegames for various apps.
Before flashing I used the tool to make a nandroid ("Nandroid backup /w Custom Recovery"), and I'm guessing I can find the files I need in that backup. The tool saved the backup as [data/cache/system/recovery].ext4.win files.
I have tried using ext2explore to read the data file, but it doesn't show anything.
TL;DR
How can I read a ext4.win file in Windows?
i thought backups were saved in *.tar.

I don't know how it's usually done, but this tool saves it in 4 "ext4.win" files and a "recovery.emmc.win" file.

As it says in OP: yes I used the toolkit (Wugfresh's Nexus Root Toolkit) to make a nandroid, because it makes it easier (for me) to backup, wipe and flash with a single click.
The toolkit's thread is in a dev section, which I'm not allowed to post in due my "noob" status on these forums.
So that was very helpful, thanks.
I tried Linux Reader you linked to, but still no luck.
I says that the filesystem is not supported.
Twrp also saves nandroids in this extension.
Op: use titanium backup to load up the nandroid (menu -> extract from nandroid backup).

Ah Team Win - that's right, it's what the toolkit uses for backups. Thanks.
I had to get the paid version of TB to use the extraction, extracted only data and it worked to some extend. Some of my games got their savegames restored, but e.g. TinyStation did not - Which is the game I'm most eager to restore the savegames to. I also tried to extract app+data for this one, but it didn't work.
But thanks a lot geoff! =)
Not all games work with backup programs. Which really sucks. But tb is a GREAT app to have, especially the purchased version.
BTW, was it a different ROM you flashed or was it an updated ROM you flashed? If it WS an update, you might be able to restore your nandroid and then flash the update.

Sucky. I emailed the developer asking where the savegames are stored, so let's see if they'll be able to help.
Yea, TB is great - definitely my backup app from now on.
It was an updated ROM. I flashed from Kang's JB build 1 to build 2.
But yea, restoring the nandroid and flashing without wiping is the next step, but it ****ed my phone last time, so I was hoping to avoid messing around with it again.
Actually I might just have realized why it didn't work the first time. =)
I'll give then app dev 'till tomorrow, and then I'll restore and reflash.
Thanks again, geoff.

im having the same issue, what im doing is downloading a 4.1.2 ROM and flashing that then seeing if the SDcard is back to normal. will report back when finished
Push your clockworkmod folder to /data/media.
All you need is working ADB and to make things even more simple QtADB.
Alternatively a root explorer *should* work...
use a file explorer or pc to transfer files to sdcard0
I can't locat the file...

Don't restore when switching major versions, just reinstall - would be my advice. Especially on this one, at least until custom recoveries take care of that (if it hasn't happened already).
same thing here.
tried out the new 4.2, and then the recovery doesn't find the data anymore
i'm trying to flash other rom, and if it won't work, i'll try to go back to the stock rom...but i don't think it would help.
