Hello, yesterday I decided to finally give cyanogenmod a try and went through and installed it successfully. HOWEVER! I'm not quite happy with it and simply want to return back to stock.
Heres the thing...I kinda didnt do a Nandbackup...I know...
How in the world do I get back to factory settings without me losing the ability to root again and be able to receive OTA updates?
Help is highly appreciated. Thanks.
go get yourself a stock but rooted rom out of the dev section and flash that, presumably the same place you got CM.....
I got CM from Rom Manager, where is the dev section to get the rooted stock rom?? Sorry I'm not that familiar with this.

Just curious, what didn't you like about it?
You can get a rooted stock ROM from ROM Manager. Look for joeykrim from the download rom menu. Haven't tried it myself though. Can't vouch for it.

There were a couple things I did not like:
1) the dialer it has a nice layout but you cant search for a contact by typing the letters in their name, you actually have to go through the contacts list
2) ADW Launcher - Nothing againts it, it's nice and all but I'm personally used to Launcher pro. You can change it and disable ADW so it's not too big of a deal
3) The biggest problem I had was the mic, for some reason I was not able to be heard when I made a phone call...I could hear the person but they couldnt hear me I had to restart the phone.
4) Battery killer - Hate to say it but it was murdering my battery..well kind of. I have the Seido 3500 mah but I was at 20% at around 12 hours. Im usually at 40 - 50 range.
Thats about it. some of them arent big deals but the dialer and the mic problem just dont do it for me...I was really looking forward to it, but i guess i'll have to wait until it's a little bit more stable. There are some things I did like, it's definitely much snappier it feels much smoother and with set cpu i got my cpu to 1.3Ghz (awesome!) and I loved the music controls on the lockscreen and the swipe to ignore notification.
Dont get me wrong, it's amazing work and my hat comes off to everyone who has worked extremely hard to make cyanogen (or any rom) to happen. They are definitely talented individuals, but this one just doesnt fit my needs.
Thanks for the information btw, I will go ahead and try it!

Just a little heads up before flashing to another rom. All of those problems you are facing can be fixed by simply installing a few apps and a little tweaking.
1. My solution to the dialer problem: dialer one, this app is more like senses dialer, you can search for a contact my name or number... you will like it.
2. If you are looking for a launcher such as Rosie, then your sol with out a sense rom.. but if ADW launcher was all you didn't like (I personally dislike ADW also) then try out launcher pro.
3./4. These can all be problem from a bad install.. I would flash the rom again. For your battery search for cyanogenmod battery calibration.
Hope this helps!

That's very odd- try resetting your battery statistics, as people generally get about 40-50% better battery life on cyanogen than on sense- on average i get about 28 hours of battery life under normal use.
Since no one else seems to be keen on answering the origional question,
How to Unroot the EVO in 2 STEPS
That will put you back to total stock, however, that pc36img.zip might be out of date. The OP is still in that thread, and very helpful though.

Thanks I'm going to give cyanogen another try, I wont delete it just yet. Question though..Is there any way to disable ADW Launcher. I read that you could use root explorer and rename or delete it, but when I try it says I dont have permission (something like that).
Another question is..Is there any way to put widgets on the cyanogen lockscreen? I like using Widgetlocker but I freaking love the music controls on the cyanogen lockscreen. Is it possible to have the best of both worlds?

Thats nifty but I still like the way the stock dialer does it, it's much simpler.
I just rooted my evo, and I'm loving CM7. I do have some questions, tho. I keep reading about a sense gps fix and updating prl to work properly with CM7. My gps works just fine I've used it. What is a prl update anyway? Do I need to do these thins if my phone is already working properly? Any help would be appreciated.
If your gps works, leave it alone. The PRL is the roaming list so you can connect to a tower; you update it on a sense rom because you can't in AOSP.
What to look for...
I too, just recently rooted my Evo and am running CM7.
Running my speed test app, it's reporting slower speeds than before I rooted. Is that common or do I need to update/change something?
Plus, what should I look for to know when it's time to update the radio/wimax?
Update: Was looking at other threads, came across ManD5 which is supposed to help check md5. Am I on the right track?
Update #2: Found what I needed in another thread. Sorry to bug you all...took longer to find what I needed.

Hey,
I really love the feel of ASOP roms but when ever I flash one, deck cm7 or other asop roms my 3g speeds slow down to a crawl and after a few days I cant even get my web pages to load. Does anyone know what might be causing this? Sense roms work just fine its just those ASOP that my phone doesnt like.
Thanks in advance
I'm on my evo so its a little harder for me to shoot you a link but if you Google "evo 4g aosp slow 3g xda" you should find a thread from a while back that talked about it. I'm not 100% sure but I believe there was a sollution. If you can't find it pm me
Also are your radios up to date? That could be a cause. New radios were release a day or 2 ago. Just wait for calkulin to make a flashable zip and flash it in amon. Also NEVER PULL YOUR BATTERY DURING A RADIO UPDATE you get paper weights

Probably 10 pages back, captain_throwback made a PC36IMG with the radio and PRI to flash; the NV and wimax didn't change. I flashed it the day before yesterday and all good.
Thanks guys I found that xda link and am looking through it now, Il let you know what I find.
I am flashing the latest version of the roms, so that should include the latest radios right?
I'm in the same boat as you. 3g is slow and I only have around 2 bars. It says my radio is up to date(on Decks Rom) so I didn't flash. Maybe ill just wait for the new updates.

Thanks for these links, I am getting horrible 3G speeds as well. These links only seem to be solutions for Sense based ROMs and they say switching to a AOSP ROM may loose these settings. I had Sprint refresh my data signal while I was on AOSP and my speeds got amazingly fast with just one bar but after a few hours the dropped to a crawl. I have no idea what's going on or why this is happening and it's very frustrating.
I am going to flash MikG and see how this helps but I hate Sense ROMs because of the lack of SBC and the battery life is horrible in Sense.
Sorry I didnt get to check last night, those fixes do work but my 3g was still dead, what I had to end up doing was flashing a new radio and installing it, then i had to go in my SENSE rom to system updates and update my profile and then I flashed an ASOP rom and life was good!
I'd provide a link, but when I searched for it, it was like the first link. Google 3g turbocharger. It'll take you to a thread on here that's about V6 supercharger. Go down to download section and it'll be there. Try all 4 options, for me, #1, fast, is the fastest, but it varies

Sigh...
I was asking for the link to the specific radios to flash. The one solution is only for Sense ROMS and this is an AOSP thread. Also, I've tried 3G turbo charger and it doesn't seem to make a noticeable difference. I also asking for a link to the specific radios because I have a wakelock and have read that flashing a certain set will fix it. So I figured I might be able to fix both problems if someone would kindly link to the specific post with the specific radios.

Again, not at my computer ATM to provide links, but searching "Evo 4g radio update" and within the first 5 links is calkulins (typo? Sorry) page with all current radios.
As for turbocharger you have to try all the settings. Some work better than others and it does depend on phone/ROM setup.
Again sorry for not being able to provide links atm
Sent from my OG Evo 4G via XDA app. Did I mention from inside my pocket?
Sorry for the miscommunication, I thought you meant Google. Either way I was unable to find the post that suggest the different radio/NV/PRI combos that would supposedly fixed the issue. I updated to the latest through bootloader and recovery and see no difference in speed or the wakelock issue.
I have the most recent radios from the newest ota update in my sig. I myself have been using them and have had no issues. But, the radios don't affect wifi or 3g speed. Just updates to newer towers and relay points. I recommend wiping cache and dalvik twice. Once before, and once after flashing.
To note, I've heard a lot of people saying to flash to a sense ROM and update PRL and Profile, but I myself never have and haven't noticed anything, but maybe that's why? Idk.... I'll try in a few days and get back to you.
Guys,
This might be a longshot, but I'm hoping someone might be able to give some advice.
I have the Epic 4G tough and had it flashed over to straight talk. At first it worked good(since Dec), but the 3G data speeds were never really there. Was getting a max of around 200-250k/sec, but things were pretty solid. Others around here with ST and flashed ST phones have been able to get 1.5+ Mb/sec speeds.
Did have a problem with the signal just disappearing and then coming back a few seconds later, even while in an area where I had 4+ bars. Just Poof, gone and then it would come back.
The phone did an OTA update a month or so ago and things were still working the same. I think a couple of ther updates might have happened in the past week because I heard my phone reboot a couple of times for no reason that I can find.
For about the past week though things have went all to crap on it.When 3G does connect I'm luckt to get 16k/sec. Still works great over wifi.
Here is my baseband version:
S710.10 S.FL24
Android version 4.04.
Does anyone have any advice that might help me out?
Thanks in advance.
I'm assuming that since you flashed over to ST that you are rooted? If so, have you updated your modem, prl, profile? There is also a thread on here where you can change your 3g settings using your MSL code, that may help you. From what I've read, sometimes OTA will jack with the 3g signal. Try those things and see if that held. You may have to flash different modems depending on where you live to find the best one. You're running ICS, I'd start in rwilco12's repository and flash the latest ICS modem, update prl and profile, and see if that helps. Good luck! Hope it works out

Unfortunately I had the phone remotely flashed by flashedphones.net and it isn't rooted.
It does have the newest ST PRL on it.
Could you possibly post a link for the MSL thread?
Looking over the repository and reading the thread about it, I see mention that there are ODIN 1 click modem files and someone mentioned that these will root the phone as well. Does anyone know if this is correct? If so that would be a great added bonus for me.
I think I can still flash a modem to the phone through ODIN even if it is not rooted?
Thanks!
Yes, you should be able to flash a modem without rooting using odin. If you can boot into download mode, Odin should flash just fine. However, in order to change 3g settings, you need to be rooted. You have to use terminal emulator(on the linked guide, there may be other ways) which requires rooting to have full control.

First thing you'll want to look for is making a nandroid backup. The saying goes "if flashing breaks it, a backup should restore it".
You'll specifically want to look for recording your mms/mmsc/apn settings. Basically anything carrier specific settings that you can edit via the ##data# menu. Make sure you write them down and that way you won't have to hunt for them.
You'll need to know what your msl is as well. There are threads to help you get that.
When it comes to flashed over carrier devices, mms usually breaks and has to be edited for settings.
Check out threads that deal with, for example, Boost flashes and check their issues and expect the same to happen and you'll need to fix.

Grrr,Pancho you're too da*n fast for me! I actually knew the answer to that one. Throw a brother a bone will ya? Ha. On a serious note, Pancho is right. If you don't know what nandroid is, you're not ready to root. But once you do, you'll have the ability to flash a custom recovery that basically allows you to make a mirror copy of the current ROM you have. That way, if you mess things up, you can always reflash the custom recovery cwm, restore the ROM, and start over. Read, read, read. The folks here have encountered and answered about every type of issue.

Looks like it was a bad flash from the start.

They want me to send it in to them so they can "fix" it.
The hell with that. I'll eat the money and get it fixed locally so that I have someone who actually knows what they are doing.

Luckily this local guy is pretty good. I'm pretty sure he will let me watch so I might learn some things. Not interested in doint other peoples phones, but would like to learn so I can do my own stuff.
As far as flashing ROM's/ modems I'm comfortable with that. Just need more experience with the changing over to other services on them.
But hey, at least I have a pretty decent JB rooted rom on it now.
Has anyone played around with the radios and seen which ones seem to be pretty good in weak signal areas?

Subject: Problem w/(4G?)-HotSpot hack on "WILD FOR THE NIGHT" CM10.1-20130316-d710 (base-band version EK02)
So, I was recently *given* a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7" (p3113, WiFi only) by a buddy of mine, for helping him out with some significant things in real life. I know right? Very cool of my buddy. I'm in love with the tablet still (honeymoon period). It's not brand-new, but its new to me, so of course the first thing I did was root it, wipe it clean, and install unofficial a CM10.2 nightly build w/working IR from 080913. I'm staying on 080913 build since it's the latest build that supports TabletUI.zip, via Nova Launcher, which I also love by the way. Anyway, this tablet is the PERFECT compliment to my Sprint E4GT "Spider-Man Edition" (cracked screen, long story)
So, this recent tablet acquisition has given me reason to use the hotspot built into CM10.1, on my phone, under "Settings|More|Tethering & Portable Hotspot|Portable WiFi HotSpot. I had assumed up to this point that CM10.1 on my phone had the 4G hotspot hack pre-installed, but alas, when I use it to tether my tablet to get internet access on the tablet, only 3G mobile data appears to be working.
What gives with this? It'd been a while since I've been keeping up with the E4GT ROM/hack scene, so is there some hack zip that I need to install in order to take advantage of tethering and 4G on this ROM? Thanks will be given in multitude for any assistance. Thanks.

I use this when I'm on slimbean or other aosp ROMs..never tried it with cm.. But should work. https://www.dropbox.com/s/rwew4y39t3f6pns/wifi-tether-gnex-4.2.2.apk. ... You will have to set it up for the epic in its setting.. Then play around with it a little.. I think I posted my settings somewhere.. I'll find the post and link it..
---------- Post added at 10:38 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:32 PM ----------
Here is the link.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2375899&page=4 .... Post 34.. Hope this helped..
Edit... finally found out who made this app... TrevE....so thank him if it works for you
This appears to work as you said!! (Thanks given to your reply)
I configured the first option in the settings menu of this app for "Sprint Epic 4G Touch, and also enabled "Access Control" (whatever that means, care to explain that for me?) and, low-and-behold, turning on 4G is no longer ignored by this new hotspot app, like it is by the stock CM10.1 hotspot app. SpeedTest.Net confirms that 4G is actually in use. The differences in speed between 3G and 4G are only marginal at best in many locations, but that is on Sprint's crappy WiMax 4G implementation, and not the fault of the hotspot app you linked me to. With the SpeedTest.Net app, I'm getting about 0.8Mb/s average download speed while sitting at my desk in my office (indoors), when only 3G is enabled on the phone. but I'm getting about 1.7Mb/s when using this newly-suggested hotspot app with 4G enabled on the phone. So clearly it's working, and that that extra 1Mb/s (or sometimes slightly more) can be the difference between smooth video playback on YouTube (or whatever video app), versus frequent pausing for buffering when watching a video link sent by a friend to my phone. It's also makes Google Maps and Google Navigation much faster AND more responsive when I'm on the interstate, where the 4G coverage is generally pretty good here in the DFW area. SO, I'll kjeep you posted if I run across any major bugs,m but this suggestion appears to allow to now tether by tablet to my phone with actual 4G WiMax. Thank you SO much for your suggestions and links!
Your loyal "thanker" from now on,

Thanks for the kind words... Being able to help someone out is the part I most enjoy about this site.. You can let me know about any issues you have , but just to make sure you know.. This isn't my app.. Just found a drop box link while looking for myself and others and it worked. I'm still not sure who made it..lol. It might say in the app, but I'm not currently using it as I'm on projectX ROM and its tether works great..
Hey there... thanks for the follow-up. Still working like a champ bro, AND it does something else that the stock tethering app doesn't do: it allows the ability to only allow "Approved devices" (by MAC address) to connect, in addition to (or I think even instead of) setting a WPA2 password. It even shows you in the phone's notification bar which approved devices are currently connected, and plays a custom notification sound when an unapproved device attempts to connect. Combine that with a home screen widget for 1-touch toggling, and the MacroDroid app set up to automatically turn on data and 4G when the tether app is turned on, and this is now officially the coolest thing on my phone. I know you didn't create it (nor did you ever claim to), but you did link me to an app that ended up exceeding my wildest expectations. THANK YOU BROTHER.

I know..its great.. When I found it...it was like finding a lost treasure.. Of course, now I'm on tw..so I don't need it..but you can bet I'll always keep a backup of this app..Thanks for the kind words... You can change the op title to solved. That way others might see it, if they need help or the mod's can delete if they deem it so.. Good luck.

Will this work on a rooted yet stock 4g? FWIW I'm not running Touchwiz I've got Nova.
Thanks as I've got the apk ready to go if someone gives me the thumbs up.

It will work..... and you are on touchwiz... you're just using a 3rd party launcher.. (Nova is one of my favorites )...
If you need help setting it up... I linked to my settings above.. you might have to play with it though as you are on tw.. I said I was on tw, but it was a custom rom that was tw based with a 4g hotspots hack... so I didn't need it.. Should work on stock rooted though...
Let me now

Thanks for that help! I configured it according to the link you posted but to no avail. It says it's running but I can't find the SSID when trying to connect another computer to it. I also don't see the icon on the top of my screen indicating that I'm connected to 3g. Is this app only for 4g?

No... it will work with 3g too.... try playing with the settings... remember, those settings of mine where for an aosp rom (slimbean)...
Also... if you decide you don't like it or can't get it to work... after you delete the app... boot to recovery and wipe cache and dalvik cache. This will get rid of the binaries installed by the app.

Thanks for all the help! Last night I changed the setup method to Softap for Samsung (master) and actually got the 3g icon to show and I thought it was going to work but I could not find the SSID and there were also errors recorded in the log. I'm at work now in an all metal building and can't get a signal but I will try again and report back. Thanks again!
Oh, and we're sure this setup, if I get it to work, is totally unknown to Virgin? I would hate them to boot me for doing this. (oh, and how ridiculous is it to charge for data that I'm already paying for!?!?) One reason I got the S2 from Virgin online is because it stated wifi tethering as a feature. Nowhere did it say I had to pay for this feature. But that's another story.

You should be safe from virgin knowing... atleast I've never been caught by sprint or boost..
As for the error's... I always had error's on my setup.. but it worked.. keep trying, I know there is a setup to get ya going...
If you end up not getting it to work.... you could try an app from the playstore... or as a last resort you could flash a custom rom based on tw.. the tw roms have working 4g hacked hotspots.. you would need to change you're apns once you have the new rom flashed so you have data.. no biggy there..

I can't get this or any tethering app to work. I've tried modding my build.prop file with the .tether.denied=false item as well - to no avail. I think it's because I'm on IceCream Sandwich??? Anyway, I'm rooted, stock ROM and all I want to do is enable wireless tethering. I really feel no need or desire to install a custom Rom. So, can I do it somehow? I am on the Epic 4G Touch forum, someone has to know.
Also, you mentioned clearing my delvik cache and something else but I have no idea how to do it. I tried installing clockwork mod but I could find no option for the Epic 4G Touch. There was an option to create a backup for the Epic 4G but not the touch. I figured at least if I did this I'd have the option of clearing the cache.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks again.

I see you said that you ( tried ) installing clockwork mod.. so I'm assuming you tried it with Rom Manager... I will say this once.. Do Not Use That To Install Recoveries on this device.. you will end up with a brick...
We have to use Odin, mobile Odin and there is a couple other ways ( involving a terminal emulator ) to install recoveries on this device.. You see.. our kernel's and recoveries are tied together.. So to install a custom recovery, we have to flash/install a custom kernel..
Let me ask you this.. how did you root and what superuser app are you using..

Yeah, I tried installing it with Rom Manager, I can go ahead and uninstall it then. I rooted using some solution I found online and honestly I don't remember what it was but it was very simple. I am using Superuser 3.1.3 (46). Was that what you were asking??
I really would hate to be one of those people who hasn't done their homework and then expects everyone else to answer their questions - I hate those people. I succesfully installed CM10 to my HP Touchpad so I feel pretty good being able to at least accomplish that feat.
Thanks for your help. Hey I guess if I make a successful backup of how my phone is now, I can play with other roms. Maybe this is the jumping in point for me right here. Thanks!
Now to figure out these damned captcha codes!

Ya.. this could be the start of you loving you're phone again.. :fingers-crossed:
I always suggest new people to read up before doing anything...
Also.. I suggest starting out with the touchwiz roms.. they will be more familiar to new users as well as a little easier to trouble shoot.. I believe..
They also have the better data speeds and the 4g hotspots hack..
Just read up.. if you need any help.. I'm always around.. but first things first.. read up on custom recoveries... once you have one installed with a kernel that will work for you're stock rom you can make a backup... you could make one with another custom recovery/kernel combo, but let's just keep it simple for now.
In rwilco's repo you can find just about anything you need... modems( read about ),kernel/recoveries, and many other things. Just remember and read about the emmc brick bug in ICS..
Being as you are new and not on JB.. a one-click for Odin on windows will be our first step if you choose to proceed. From there you can flash just about anything you want... I can link you to a little guide I put together for a really easy way to flash/install new roms, kernels/recoveries.
Let me know what ya think...

Start reading the stickies in the Android development section.. a very good starting point..
Also.. don't worry about asking questions.. we all start out as noobs.. lol. But you have the right attitude..plus.. when you find the answers yourself, I always think they stick better and you also get that feeling of accomplishment. You'll make a good member here with the way you are looking at it... but I also know that when you come to that first flash... it can be nerve racking.. So if you get stuck or not sure where to head.. just hit me up.. Good Luck..

Okay thanks. I'm still thinking about all of this. I'm thinking I'm not committed enough to do it right now and it may be a case of the cure being worse than the disease. I mean all I really want to do is make wifi tethering work. I'm afraid I don't have the time necessary to tinker with all of this esp since I am very happy with my Android user experience so far with this phone.
Besides the tethering fix, what other benefits would there be to installing a custom rom. Or... what would make a custom rom better than Jellybean? Is installing a custom rom the only way I can backup my current system?
Thanks again though for all of your help.

For me.. it's about customization.. Being able to change my status bar( color, transparency, icon, clock position, )..and many other things..
Also... I find that the custom roms are smoother than stock roms...
As for backing up you're system... you can backup you're data on a pc/mac...but if you're wanting to do full system backup's....I think rooting and a custom recovery are the only way to go.. ( but I'm not positive , as I've never looked into it.. )
