[Q] HELP!?!?!? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was trying to unroot my (Old) evo that i ahve to send back to asurion in like 10 days because i needed a replacement and when it was in the process it just shut off now when i turn it on it goes straight to a bootloader and when i select go to recovery it gives me the little phone with the red triangle icon in the middle of the screen. If i send it back like that what will happen? Can i fix this?

Are you S-on now? What method for unrooting were you using?

Download ruu file for your version and run it. It'll restore it to stock.

Yes it is. Also the thread title is very vague.

Trying to avoid a brick! Quick help.

I got myself into a interesting situation. A quick answer would be greatly appreciated:
1. I'm rooted.
2. Trying to install the OTA so I can run 2.2 the right way.
3. I started a thread asking for help because I was confused on unrooting my phone. Didn't get much help, a quick flame, and last someone chimed in to install the OTA from Rom Manager. I asked if I could do this with Root and the thread was killed.
4. I did. The boot screen was the new one. But the radio wasn't updated.
5. I then attempted to unroot my phone. Followed the PB31IMG.zip method. Phone booted normally. Root was lost.
6. This is where I am now.
7. My question is, if I install the OTA now renamed update.zip on my SD card, will I run the chance of bricking my phone because I installed it once from Rom Manager while I had root (#3/#4)??????
Please advise so I don't MOD EDIT up my phone.................
And if you're going to flame and insist I should of just followed the 2.2 leak instructions, you're correct. But I took someone's quick answer and tried it assuming they knew a better method.

Well, "the right way" would be to wait for the actual OTA. Verizon would also have your back if you brick. But, anyway...
If you're still on the 1.00.03.04.06 radio, you can probably follow the instructions in that thread now that you've flashed back to the stock ROM. However, there still seem to be a few cases of people bricking their phones or being stuck in a bootloop after flashing leaks.
If you are confused/concerned/afraid of bricks then you just shouldn't flash the leaked OTA. This is not a flame, this is sound advice. Wait for the real one.
I'm fine with flashing. I just keep hearing about this "double install OTA and brick your phone" issue and I'm trying to avoid doing that. If the one guy didn't chime in with the suggestion to use ROM Manager, I wouldn't of had this issue.
My radio is still 1.00.03.04.06. I just want to make sure I don't run a risk of bricking.
If the hboot updated, i would say not to apply again. If it didnt update then i would say to see what happens, but dont take my word for it 100%

I personally have had a .77 HBOOT since I got my phone in April. My mom's phone, on the other hand, had the .79, which she has had since May, and she sure as hell didn't have no 720p camcorder. I don't think that the OP's phone having .79 means with any certainty that the OTA already applied once. I think the radio version listed on the HBOOT screen would be a better indicator.
But absolutely, running the PB13IMG should ensure that he's as far back as he can go, so why not try it just to be safe...

That's what I just did before I posted this thread. I installed the PB13IMG and restored everything back to stock. You asked about the HBOOT version and that's .79. I'm comfortable flashing and doing the update. What should HBOOT say? Has anyone successfully updated the OTA from .79 HBOOT?
Thank you for the help. Sorry for the questions. I completely comfortable with rooting, flashing roms, and kernals. This is going back to unroot stock is just new.
I want to install the OTA and I'm good to go. Just making sure it's safe now....

Agreed, however, I noticed after running the PB13IMG, my HBOOT was also .79, which could have only come from the PB13IMG since I hadn't tried to do the OTA yet. Just trying to add pieces to the puzzle to get a better picture for future reference...I'm sure this guy wont be the last to ask...

I appreciate the help guys. I guess my question would be if I ran PB13IMG, lost my root, back to stock, my HBOOT is .79 and my radio is still 1.00.03.04.06 and not 2.05.00.06.11, I should be at the same point as everyone else for installing the OTA from my SD card. Right or wrong?
When you read these threads and people are installing the OTA twice and bricking, are they installing the OTA again when the radio is already updated to 2.05.00.06.11?
Yep. I think you can flash it again, but be real cautious, as this is your second time flashing it, but if the radio is still the old versoin, you should be safe.

Umm no if he was rooted properly. Not boot by bout basis. You are OK. Your S-Off. Just would need to put latest Amon RA recovery named PC36IMG.ZIP in root of sdcard. Then let hboot flash it. Then flash rom like normal. Works that what I did

I would say give it a few days. I'm pretty sure someone will have EVO rooting again. Next time I would recommend unrevoked 3/forever.

It is so easy & fast. Root in 5min or less. Still able to unroot later if wanted/needed.

Worth a try, but I would definitely do a google search and have several RUUs on hand to try in case you get an error (i.e. attempting to load software older than original) with the first one.

Here is the linked to the Unrevoked Forever wiki:
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever
Look at this section in particular:
Since you have already installed the OTA update, start at step 4.
Reinstalling an official recovery
If you wish to install a stock over-the-air update in the future (OTA), the safest way to do so is to install the recovery that originally shipped with your phone. To install an OTA:
Install unrevoked forever on your phone.
Download or create an appropriate PB31IMG.ZIP, PC36IMG.ZIP or HERCIMG.zip for your phone that contains the original recovery image.
We do not supply these images; since the recovery code is owned by HTC, we don't distribute it. You may be able to find these images on the XDA-Developers forums.
From the phone operating system, install the over-the-air update.
When the update is done installing, you will probably want to root it with a custom recovery. Download one of the following recovery restore images:
Amon-Ra recovery for EVO 4G
ClockworkMod recovery for EVO 4G
ClockworkMod recovery for Incredible
Amon-Ra recovery for CDMA Hero
Place the appropriate file – with that exact file name! – on the root of your SD card.
Reboot your device into HBOOT by removing the battery, pressing VOLUME DOWN, inserting the battery, and pressing POWER.
When prompted Do you want to start update?, press VOLUME UP for Yes. When prompted again Do you want to reboot device?, press VOLUME UP for Yes.
Your phone now has a custom recovery. To restore superuser access to your phone, you can apply any appropriate update.zip; such a file can likely be found here: Superuser App
No you need to respect the questions that some ask in forums. We may not all be brainiacs in here but some respect will be appreciated. And as far as a sense of humor I did not see anything funny in Wat you wrote...

Since you're still S off, just download a PC36IMG.zip of amon ra recovery. Place it on your SD card, boot to the bootloader, and it will ask u to update. Say yes. That will flash a recovery for you. After that, you can boot to recovery and flash a rom. Then you'll be back in action.
Edit: I attatched a PC36IMG.zip of Amon Ra 2.3 recovery. Place the file on the main directory of your sd card. When you boot to the bootloader, it'll scan and find the PC36IMG.zip, then ask you to update. Hit volume up. When it asks you to reboot when it finishes, say no. Then from the bootloader menu, select 'recovery'. You'll now be in recovery. At this point, you'll just need to use recovery to flash a rooted rom of your choice. So be sure to have a ROM on your sd card, then go ahead and flash it as you normally would. Hope that helps a bit.

ok maybe I can help...i believe I saw or read somewhere that if you accepted the 2.3.3 OTA you can RUU back to 2.2 with a bootloader you can root with...at least that's what I think I heard...but if you have one of the new batches of EVOs I believe you'll have to wait til they find an exploit.
And next time just try to be a little more specific with what you are trying to accomplish and if you don't already, try searching for your answer before posting so we don't end up with a million of the same thing (like we do already)
But try doing a little more digging into what I said cus I don't want what I say to be the reason you get a pricked phone.
Hope this helped.
Edit: oops, sorry didn't see that you still have s-off...just listen to k2buckley haha

No you need to respect the questions that some ask in forums. We may not all be brainiacs in here but some respect will be appreciated. And as far as a sense of humor I did not see anything funny in Wat you wrote...

Wow...no offense but I am no brainiac but I know how to ask a question. And let me quote the Rules of XDA Forums:
1. Search before posting.
Use one of our search functions before posting, whether you have a question or something new to share, it's very likely someone already asked that question or shared that news.
3. Post only using a clear subject and message.
You're most likely to receive a helpful answer to your question if you use a short subject title that describes your problem and a message that explains in detail what your problem is and what you've tried to solve it.
