Hello and thank you for looking at this, i have an epic unrooted that i updated to 2.2 with an update.zip. My epic usb is broken and i need to exchange it and they won't take it with 2.2 on it. I need an update.zip that puts my epic back to 2.1 stock. I need to be able to put it on my sd card and update through recovery. Like i said i don't have root. Please help me! Thank you in advance.
Theres a thread about how to return your phone to stock with odin, also check the wiki. Your best bet is to flash through odin to di18, our dg27, either works...

You can root your phone without usb. z4root does work for the epic.

Search for the APk for z4root. Then dl it and install it. Open the app and click root.

Oh also you might need to change the the file name to update in order to flash it in the stock recovery.
I did this when I first went to FROYO ( forgot who's post I got it from) If you have the factory ROM just rename name it... update.zip and try that, it worth a shot

i gave him that link earlier
he doesnt have clockwork installed
Easy fix man, break a battery pin off so the phone doesn't power on, and take it back saying it just died. They won't be able to boot it to check the rom at that time and should in store replace it with a refurb. I have done this once, when they didn't want to replace mine for screen wobble.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
You could also intentionally flash a file that shouldn't have be flashed, to stick the phone at the boot logo.
Without being able to boot, they cannot reveal what rom is 'running'
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Just get a 12-24VAC power brick, like one used on a sprinkler timer. Drag the 2 bare leads from the output around the contacts on the back of the phone for battery, sdcard, antennas, etc... It'll roast the **** out of everything inside of the phone. They'll never know what ROM was on it after that.

No. You have to either Odin to EC05 or flash ReRFS ROM and stock recovery. Unless that forces the phone to download and install the stock ROM. Sprint tried that with my phone and it did not work properly.

If you're trying to get him back to stock, your best bet is Odin EC05 and let it update OTA to EI22. A factory reset won't lose root, but that may be your problem...depends on why you want to return to stock. If it's to get it fixed by taking it into a store, they'll either see Superuser, or there are a variety of other ways to see if a phone is rooted or not.

Odin will wipe SU and any indication from the phone itself.
Its the tell-tale signs on your SD card they might see... keep your sd card or remove files like "clockworkmod" and the like.

Yup, recovery is what I was thinking about, but that's just one thing. As tony said, go through your SD card too. There are traces of root (not literally) all over the place there! Not only the 'clockwork' folder, but also the 'Titanium Backup' folder if you have one, and really, about any zip files that aren't 'update.zip'.
If you're super paranoid about it, you could also set up another Google Account to link that with your phone. If you've bought apps with specific root capabilities (Titanium Backup for example), they could see it on your Google Account.
That piece is only if you're super paranoid, but just an idea. This way, after you Odin (which replaces CW recovery with stock recovery), you can login with the 'other' Google account and you'll have virutally zero apps associated with that account. I would probably throw a few games on there, maybe import a few contacts, just to be safe.
I doubt any Sprint employees would go to this length, but if you literally wanted to cover all your bases, this is where you would start.
I had to take my epic 4g touch into the sprint store for repair and they updraded the phone to EL29 How do I get back to the previous version?
Thanks in advance
Check out sfhub, he has a ton of oneclick odin restores. I'm sure ek02 is still being hosted. Or something like that, that would get you there) Check his signature.

Yes, it will get you back to stock EK02.
If you want root, use the Auto Root package, Option A.
If you want CWM, after rooting with Option A, use Option C to install EK02+CWM
Backup everything important of course.
You can try the NoData version to see if your data can be preserved (sometimes downgrading won't work) or if you don't mind restoring your data, just do the Full version that resets your data. It will definitely work regardless of whether you are downgrading.
Thanks for the help so far. Could you tell me what CWM is?
And if i do this will sprint be able to tell? I dont want to void my warrenty.
I just want the dang phone back the way it was yesterday.
Thank you again.
PS I dont mind having to resore any data. I really dont have much on it
thanks again

CWM is clockwork mod recovery. If you didn't have it before, then don't worry about it. It is used to install custom ROMs, themes, make backup images, etc.

If you are just installing the EK02 ODIN OneClick, it will look exactly like stock. Sprint will not be able to tell. It does not increase your flash count, nor does it trigger the yellow triangle. Root isn't installed in the EK02 package. If you want it, it is a separate step.

Then I would just use the Full EK02 ODIN OneClick restore. It will get you back to stock and reset your data. Then just restore the little data you have.
Ok...
I'm about ready to do this.
I've watch some videos and I just want to be sure i understand the steps
1. I downloaded file SPH[D710.EK02 CL704398-oc
2. I extracted the file and created the odinoc folder with 546MB file in it.
3. I disabled my passcode
4. I downloaded the samsung drivers and installed them on my desktop computer.
5. Now as i understand it, I put the phone in odin/download mode, attach my usb cable to my phone then hit start in the odin oc.
am I correct so far?
Then I just sit back and let it do its thing
Have I missed anything or am I incorrect in the steps?
Thanks for your patience

Between steps 4&5 you should run the -OneClick.exe file by double-clicking on it.
The after running it, boot your phone into DL mode using one of the two methods.
The modem.bin is the last thing to flash and it takes around 2 minutes, so don't pull the plug early thinking it has hung.
ok...
when i click the .exe file that opens the EK02 factory restore screen correct?
Once thats up and running I boot the phone by holding the power on and vol down together correct?
Then attach the usb cable, then hit start correct?

You can have it attached while you power on. You'll have to hit I think vol up to confirm entering download mode, and then on the computer the com port should be yellow in odin oc.

I have a problem, that I cannot find nor figure out the solution, I hope there is someone here that can help. I have used and have flashed with Odin many many times and have never had a problem.
Problem:
I am running a BeastMod 5.0, and before that I was running a ICS ROM...can't remember which one. I wanted to make sure I had everything ready for when the Official ICS dropped. Went to flash the stock which is posted here, got all the way (in Odin) to the Modem cache.img.ext4 part and that is where it hangs. I actually left it overnight just to make sure, and was still stuck on that part of the flash. It keeps rebooting to the Kies download page and only way to fix is to Odin Flash clockwork recovery. I have tried the super wipe, cache wipe, and every other tool I can find, but it still always get stuck at the part listed above.
Hopefully someone else has had the same problem and been able to fix. All help is greatly appreciated.

Try reflashing the recovery. Once in recovery, reflash the ROM. That is what I had to do. Hope it helps. Also, make sure and upload the ROM to your SD Card...the superwipe doesn't touch the SD Card.

I'm rooted and running stock right now. Waiting for something that works across the board for me. But I do like to try everything that comes out Also apps like Lucky Patcher need it and I installed the DPS audio manager.
Of course, as soon as CM10 starts rocking the BT streaming I'll be a downloading.
When I first rooted for some reason I couldnt get a custom recovery to stick. I tried multiple times with no luck so eventually I just downloaded goo manager and installed custom recovery script that way. Worked like a charm. Maybe you should try that. Would save a lot of time and effort.

That's because the file on stock roms called /system/recovery-from-boot.p will re-install the stock recovery at every boot. So the trick is to boot straight into recovery and delete that file. Or, flash the Superuser.zip in recovery, boot Android, use an app to delete /system/recovery-from-boot.p, then flash a custom recovery again and you'll be fine.
Something has gone horribly wrong... I was running rooted/stock using the Team Epic procedure for several months now without a problem. I attempted to return to stock tonight using the method posted here:
http://www.epiccm.org/2012/06/sprint-sgs3-stock-restore.html
Something has gone horribly wrong. I get the Samsung splash screens but then it goes to a pulsing blue to purple LED and that's it.
I can get it into download mode and bring up CWM to select the ROM, but that's it.
I'm in over my head here, big-time I thought I had it figured out, but apparently not.... Help!!
Thanks, gang!

I'm still a HUGE rookie... what's a nandroid? (and if I have to ask, I'm sure I didn't...) It wasn't in the instructions from the Team Epic guys...
I have been using Titanium Backup Pro for Root to do backups every few days to DropBox... I'm hoping that will prove to be useful here... If I can get it working again.... Download time is up to 32 minutes now... Nuts!
nandroid is a whole phone backup that you do in recovery.how your phone is, is what the back up will be. and yeah that download time is carzy but sometimes it will speed up.
tb is only app backups really, so after you get your phone running like a champ again, you run tb and re install your apps and their data.
hope it works out for you thou

OK, so once this is finished downloading, what comes next? I'm still a little confused on the whole 'odexed/dedexed' thing... I'm assuming I need to load it onto the SD card (which I can do), plug that into the phone, and then select it from CWM? Or do I need to go back to the stock recovery first using Odin?

Don't worry about odexed or deodexed right now, after you flash that, you will be back at stock as if you just walked out the store with your phone, factory, then you can start all over,,, that rom/file will make your phone stock.

So far, no luck... It appears that the download aborted after I went to bed. The file was supposed to be 806Mb, but came in at 432Mb. If I try to load it onto the phone, it says, "Can't open /external...(long file name)....zip (bad). Installation aborted.
I also downloaded the MD4 file last night, and that appears to have been successful. It seems to be working properly for the moment. It's mounting the partition which is a good start.

So far, no luck... It appears that the download aborted after I went to bed. The file was supposed to be 806Mb, but came in at 432Mb. If I try to load it onto the phone, it says, "Can't open /external...(long file name)....zip (bad). Installation aborted.

ETA: Looking good.... Got the Sprint splash screen, and now the 'Android is Upgrading, Optimizing app XX of XXX'....
Aaaand, we're live people!! Success! MD4 is up and running, and there doesn't seem to have been ANY loss of data.... It didn't exactly return it to stock either as all my data is all still there, but it does appear to have removed SuperUser, which would mean I'm no longer rooted, correct? It also appears to have gone back to the stock recovery. So to re-root, does the 'Team Epic Root from Recovery' method I used before still work? (i.e. use Odin to install custom recovery, then flash the Team Epic Root from Recovery .zip file)
THanks a million, gang! At least I have a working phone again, with apparently no loss of data at the moment. It'll be nice to have my Root back eventually, so Tasker can do its thing, but for now, it's more than a paperweight!

If I understand correctly, I can still use the same Team Epic Root from Recovery file to install the CWM recovery regardless of which version (MB1 or MD4) I have on my phone, right? Or is there a different tar file I need to use to root the MD4 version?
Sorry for the dumb questions... Very new to this stuff still...
just use the same method you did the first time you rooted and youll be good to go.
soory for the late response but yea, I believe montecarlo's right. Sounds like u used skunk ape's guide for rooting? If so should b no problem. If u used a toolbox, it may/may not have the md4 update?

Got it now. Rooted in just a few minutes... Easy-peasy! Just used Odin like I did the first time.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I can just leave the 'return to stock' ROM on the SD card, and if I need to head to the Sprint store for some reason, I can just boot into recovery, select that one, and presto! returned to stock, right?
Thanks again for all the help with the rookie mistakes! You guys rock!!
