Hi guys
I just bought a new 16gb class 6 Adata SDHC card and need help partitioning it in this way [Fat + 1GB Ext4 + 0.3GB Ext4 + 0.1GB Swap] as this is required for RCSMixHD rom which i want to flash...currently i am on leedroid 2.2c app2sd+ and a 4gb class 4 card....tried googling but couldnt find anything that worked for me....also how do some guys keep changing roms ? this task seems so tedious
BTW i have tried ubuntu method, had a ubuntu 9.04 disc - booted with it and opened gparted, but gparted doesnt detect my SD at all...ubuntu detects it though
You only need one its much faster with it anyway I've done a couple of random reboot and all is super fast and stable
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
ohh...i dint know, but dev of RCSmixHD suggests those partitions, also please suggest how to partition the memory card
Thank you
Just did it via GParted method. I alredy had an ext3, so i did not have to format the fat32 - just upgrade to ext4! I can tell it fast
Also if you use the data2ext, then it is better to have more partitions.
There is a post in RCSMixHD how to use GParted.
create a gparted boot disc [ i used magiciso] then turn off your pc. restart your pc and get into the boot mennu [its f2 for me] set your cd drive higher in the list then your hdd. save changes. restart with disc in drive. it will load linux. while it is still loading, atach your phone in disk storage mode. i found if i hooked in my phone whengparted was completely loaded, it owuldnt recognuze my phone but if i had my phone loaded and ready when gparted finally fished loading, it would recognize it right of the bat. creating partitions is easy to do. and i recommend rc mix hd. i use it myself and its the best all around hd rom i could find and the only 1 i havent tried yet is cool hd v2a.
gparted live disk worked...thank you guys
I have been trying gparted on my sd card for the whole day, it goes on well, but CWM say can't find ext partition?? What to do??
I am getting this error while D2ext rom in CWM recovery
"Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
invalid argument
Error mounting SDEXT:! "
Any idea what to do??

Hi all,
I have a big problem with my desire well my class 6 32gb kingston card I should say.
I don't seem to be able to create an ext partition, I tried rom manager, but it doesn't work because it doesn't create it. It actually creates a partition which can't be recognized by my pc, rom, clockword or amon recovery, neither clockword recovery no amon's recovery seem to be able to create a working one at the moment.
Then, I tried to do it via adb and parted but it says parted not found, I pushed parted to sbin via adb and i tried to do it there, it works fine for creating fat32 partitions but when it comes to ext3 it goes until the end and then says some bug has been found in parted.
Then, I used gparted, I created a fat32 partition and then a ext3 partition, it shows clearly that the partitions are there but neither my leodroid rom nor either of the recoveries can see it, when I try to wipe it, it says unable to format (file exists).
Then, I used minitools partition wizard but with no avail, neither the rom nor the recovery can read the ext partition.
Any help is appriciated.

are you creating an ext 4 partition with gparted? i had the same problem with clockworkmod, the file exists error, so i tried with the unbuntu live cd (ext 4) and got the same error, i deleted the partition and this time created an ext 3 instead and all worked fine, maybe theres a problem with clockwork and ext 4 partitions
believe me i have tried 4, 3 and 2 and none of them seem to be readable. It's driving my crazy. Any idea why parted is not on my rom? or is it just my particular device having this issue?
Thanks,
I am having a similar problem, would appreciate if someone can help
in my case I tried to partition the stock 4 GB SD card that comes with the Desire into 480 MB EXT2 partition and the rest into FAT32, for this i tried:
- ROM Manager but if failed to create the partition after going to recovery
- used EASUS partition manager from my Windows Vista laptop, and it seemed that the partition were correctly created
Then I proceeded to try to flash a couple of ROMS that are using A2SD (Leedroid 2.2e and 2.2f , Modaco R9) and in each time I got stuck in splash screen. I tried for many times then I decided to try with a ROM not using A2SD (pre-rooted stock HTC Froyo) and my Desire came back to life again.
The problem is that after that point my SD card was not recognisable at all by the phone although I could use it on the Windows laptop
I wonder if someone can explain in details the best way to format a SD card to be able to work with A2SD or A2SD+, preferrably from the phone itself (clockwork recovery) or from Windows PC application
Thanks

I have the same problem, can any one help??? I gave lots of money to buy that sd card but I cant use it the way I want :S
Take a Usb-stick.
! YOUR DATA FROM YOUR STICK WILL BE LOST, BACKUP BEFOR GPARTED INSTALL!
! BACKUP YOUR DATA FROM YOUR DESIRE SD-CARD, ALL DATA WIL BE LOST USING THIS METHOD!
Download gparted, install it using unetbootin.
start gparted form your usb-stick.
Remove all partitions in GParted from your desire sd-card.
create a new partition form about 1Gb ext-4.
then create a new partition (fat-32) that fils the rest of your sd-card.
Note: the ext-4 partition needs to be in front of the fat-32 partition.
restore your desire sd-card data.
I hope this helps!

Have you got it working?
Yes Thanks. All sorted now
Hi all!
As a last resort i'll be asking my question here.
I'm currently running the stock 2.2 rom with root access and clockworkmod recovery. I've had this setup for a long time now. Today i got my 8gb class6 card and i thought i'd change to a Desire HD rom for a change.
So far (5 hours into the process), i've only managed to what seemed the easyest: ..partition my sd card!
I currently have the following:
7gb fat32
1gb ext2
32mb swap
I have tried everything i could find but i simply cannot get this thing to upgrade to ext3 and then ext4. I do not have a card reader at hand so i'll have to do it within the phone.
The problems i'm facing after struggling for 2 hours to get parted working:
- no upgrade_fs script.
- tune2fs giving a unknown command error
I've been playing arround with this for about an hour when i switched to trying to install AmonRA recovery as i read this could upgrade your ext partition aswell. Problems i faced when trying to flash this were:
- unrevoked: internal error, unable to unlock nand.
- flash recovery app: error running command.
- flash_image commands: whole bunch of write errors and in the end a no space left error.
- rom manager: alternate recovery's greyed out, even after countless reinstalls and 'flash clockworkmod first' -tricks.
- fastboot: remote: vertification error.
- terminal app: flash_image not found.
And probably a bunch more i forgot..
I'm thinking of simply installing a RUU and do the whole rooting process again, and then installing amonra. For now i've recovered a clockworkmod backup i made and put back my old sdcard.
I hope there's someone that can help me!
Kind regards,
Jeroen
Use something like gparted or Easus or what ever it's called to partition the SD card.

Done this, but gparted only allows creation of ext2. The problem im having is upgrading it to ext3!
GParted allows to create all kind of EXT partition (including EXT3). Use the latest LIVE CD or USB version. I upgraded my EXT3 to 4 via GParted.

Oh i did not know that, i thought it only allowed up to ext2.
But dont you need a cardreader for that? Because i dont have one at hand right now
No, don't need a card reader. Best way is to boot into recovery and mount the SD Card. You can try via the Disk Drive option, but it gave me wrong readings (since the EXT partition was in use by the system), so not recommended.

Thank you!!!
I feel so stupid for struggling for hours yesterday. Only took me 5 minutes with GParted USB. Running the HD rom now!
I partitioned my SD with Amon Ra then selected ext2 to ext3, but it failed. When I moved the log to the SD card and read it on my PC it said there was no ext. I redid the partition, again with Amon Ra, then selected ext2 to ext3 and it worked. Just figured I'd let people know the ole try again method could work if you get here.

In a couple of weeks, you will be posting about ext not working properly.
Only partition your sd-card with 4ext recovery or Gparted.
Hello there! I hope that I am not annoying you, but I am having issues with partitioning my SD Card, that have not yet been discussed here, so a step by step guide would be highly appreciated, because otherwise I am just too stupid.
I have a fully unlocked HTC Desire with alpharev's S-OFF, most recent radio & stuff. Partitioning my SD with Clockworkmod Recovery 3.0.0.5 just won't work, it DOES something, but when plugging my Desire on my PC, it shows me ONE FAT32 partition, just as it was before, which takes up all the SD's space. Neither does it work with ROM Manager.
It got really weird when I manually partition it with GParted on my Ubuntu:
My Setup was:
1 FAT32 Partition, size: maximum what was left.
2 EXT4 Partitions, one 768MB, one 256 just as recommended for DATA2EXT HERE
No SWAP Partition.
Then my sdcard can't even be mounted by CWM-recovery - it says wrong parameter
I can still access it via 'mount usb storage', and fully access and format it in any way I like.
Any hints, step-by-steps or any help at all on how to correctly partition my sdcard? GParted there are settings like partition tables and stuff. what should I choose to make my SD Android-mountable??
EDIT: I think I got it. haven't yet tried it, but I think my fat pertition exceeded 2GB, gonna try later.
hy, don"t know really how it works with gparted (i m currently using amonRA which allows partionning sc card) but a single search with my friend... google gives me that result.
I think this could helps you considering your post.

Not overly sure if this will help but .....
A long time ago when I first started tinkering with roms I tried partitioning my SD Card for Apps2SD but whatever I tried (Partition Magic, ROM Manager, GParted) it would get halfway through partitioning and then fail sometimes even leaving me unable to access the card from phone or PC. Spent several nights trying to sort problem then found out that some makes (possibly cheaper but think Transend are mostly the bad ones?) don't like being partitioned, why .... I have no idea. Anyway bought a new one 16gb Lexar Class 6 card which partition first time and had no problems since. Hope it helps and best of luck!
Are you to create "primary" partition or "logical"?
Hello.
I'm having a big problem with ext4 fromatting partion.
I have using GParted program (bootable cd), and everything was great, program created 2,79 GB FAT32, and 1 GB ext4, like in the video tutorial on your site http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084 (step five).
And I noticed, on the end of the video, when the guy is checking on htc desire space (about 2:40 min on youtube) he had 13,92 GB on FAT32 of 14,92 GB. But I have full 3,92 GB FAT32, which is the same sioze a micro sd. I dont know where I am doing wrong?
Then, I tried ROM manager, but after restart, I have blue android and triangle with !...and says that on disk e: something goes wrong ABORTED!
Do you have some idea, what can I do?
Thank you very much.
You did something wrong with gParted, delete all partitions, make one FAT32 partition and format the SD.
Then try making EXT partition in recovery, if you know how to you should change recovery to the 1 in my signature, it works flawlessly.
Nope, I formated fat32 and ext4, and when I connect htc desire to pc, and put Insertcoin.zip, its blank sd card. And then I see notification on htc, that is my sd card blank, and unsupported filesystem...
I will try and third way, that ext4recvery...
or you can try MiniTool Partition (@k3lcior yes I remember what you said).
Note: Some say that you can get errors when partitioning with windows, but I've never had any problems. Up to you.
Gparted is an awesome tool to use ??? I don't see what your doing wrong ...
Format card - New Partition - Fat 32- 2.79 gb -
Then new partition - create Ext 4 at the end 1gb....
Please direct me to an idiots guide to SD partitioning...
I have been flashing my desire since the summer. And well i forgot how i initially setup my SD card.
I wanted to treat my self to a new CLASS 10 SD card. But when it came to partitioning the card i got lost.
Is it as simple as using clockworkmod to set partition size to 1-2Gigs? and swap to 0?
With reference to Ext2,ext3 and ext4 are these all multiple partitions? None of these where options within clockwork or rom manager
Anyway i did my partitions using clockwork and installed a new rom i had never used before runnymede. I found performance extremely sluggish and slow. Of course i did 3 new things at once. new card, new partition and new rom... could be one or all these causing me headaches..
Sorry to ramble on. Bottom line:
- Could i be kindly directed to a SD partitioning guide?
- Is the Desire compatible with 2,4, and 10?

hope it helps.
The class 10 SD card should be OK with your desire.
The people in the know mostly recommend not using ROM Manager to partition SD cards. I would suggest try using GParted.
In terms of ext2, 3, 4 - I would recommend ext 3 for your SD card partition - it is safer than ext 2 partitions.
I would suggest an ext 3 partition size of 1024mb or even 2048mb (that should cover you for most present roms and most future roms).
I am not as knowledgeable as some of the other guys here but I will give you an useful link:
http://www.techcredo.com/android/tu...-for-a2sd-with-gparted-on-a-windows-pc-ext234
I usually create a bootable GParted USB drive and use to partition my SD cards.
I hope that helps,
KKH
I have been trying to create an ext4 partition using GParted. I did all necessary steps - will quickly run thru, just so you know:
1. Burnt ISO and accessed thru boot menu (running XP/SP3, btw)
2. Deleted existing allocation.
3. Created new primary partition as FAT32
4. Allocated "free space following" as 1024
5. Specified the unallocated memory (1024) as ext4.
There was no error in the operation.
However... When I tried to load stuff to the SD card, Windows prompted me to format the card before using. It made no sense but I couldn't do anything. And by formatting it, I lost everything that GPL had done in the first place.
I went over the process again, to no avail.
Does anyone know where I've possibly gone wrong? Please help.
Which recovery are you using?
I had the same issue, vista kept asking me to format SD card before use.
I fixed this by making my first partition in GParted the fat32 and the second partition ext3.
I think windows accesses the first partition by default and is happy with fat32.
If your ext4 was the first partition, windows would ask to format that ext4 in to fat32 before use.
I hope that helps.
thanks i should be good to go now..

If you install 4EXT Recovery, you won't ever need a bootable disk to partition your SD card. You'll be able to do it straight from recovery I suggest you to give it a try!
My recovery is 4ext and I used this recovery to make partitions of my class10 sd card.
I also use this recovery to align my partitions.
You can also use the freeware "minitool partition wizard" under win xp instead of gparted.
Good luck.

If the OP uses this tool, he needs more than good luck. It's like rootSU says in his sig: "Don't be lazy and make GParted your first choice...". So please do not trust in windows software which wants to handle linux partitions.
Use rom manager. Simple as that
