[Q] Can't change CWM to Amon RA - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm using unrevoked to change CWM to Amon RA. I have gone through the step below.
1. Run unrevoked then went to file and choose Amon RA and then plug my desire to my PC.
2. I had follow the instruction onscreen. Everything went fine when at last after rebooting i got an error.
Error: failed to get root.
Is your firmware new.
My desire is rooted and s-off
below are the spec of my phone:
baseband version: 32.44.00.32u_5.09.05.30_2
kernel version:2.6.32.28
build number:1.72.405.3
Android version 2.2
Pls can anyone tell me what wrong

Why not use fastboot if you are S-off?
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Put the img in the same folder as fastboot, check md5 if available and change recovery.img to the actual name.

Thanks a lot. But sorry to bother you. Where is the fastboot folder . I have search but couldn't find it.

On Windows, i believe, that it comes with the sdk in the platform-tools or tools folder and for Mac and linux you need to download it separate.
Edit
There is probably no need to download the hole sdk. I posted a link in the AlphaRev thread some time ago, try to find that, there might also be a fastboot file for Windows.

I tried doing it with fastboot, have latest sdk version installed but something is not working, after I type: fastboot flash recovery recovery.img it starts and then says some win.dll is missing than it kills process.
can I ask if this will work for desire too?

How are you flashing?
Off thou flash it through recovery your just fake flashing it. You need to actually flash it through fastboot but you need S-Off. There is a way to do it without fastboot. Just Google it. You use the terminals emulator instead. No idea if it works though
Sent from CM7
as meaple has said, its only a fake flash, so it doesnt actually flash it.
i couldnt get it to work through the terminal method either due to protections (s-on) but i have now s-off, so it let me flash via fastboot first time
Can I do it with unrevoked or do I have to s-off? (assuming i won't make it with the terminal)

yes you can do it with unrevoked, but you would have to unroot first, and then go unrevoked with custom recovery

i tryed to flash via android flasher, fastboot, an via recovery with the .zip file.
everytime the same Oo
Are you sure your S-OFF?
Because then it should work!

Zip is not what you need. You need to get an img file of the recovery you want to flash. You can then do that via Fastboot or Android Flasher etc. Flashing the zip from wherever is still just fake flashing.

No. you don't have to un root. You can flash unrevoked on a rooted device
If you are s on, use unrevoked. Else use the following from fast boot:
fastboot flash recovery cwm_.img

Then you will need to make a Goldcard then download the WWE Version then run the .exe and get the rom.zip file copied some where then with goldcard inplace run fastboot with the following commands
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot flash zip rom.zip
That will then flash it. make sure before running fastboot your in the same place as fastboot and the rom.zip file though

All the other builds are lower
Will this work?

ps
On Windows 7 any idea where the rom zip is extracted to when the exe is run?
Rom.zip will be any one of the folders in temp just type %temp% in run box. As for the Rom if that's the latest then it's the latest.
Also 3.x.405 is latest

Help, can't flash any KitKat ROMs! [How to update recovery]

This seems to keep coming up so for those of you who can't find the fix, please don't create new threads or post all over the developers forum
The most likely reason you can not flash 4.4.x and newer ROMs:
You have an old recovery
why would this matter?
Basically the way permissions are handled in the updater-script (what tells your device how to flash the ROM) have changed
and thus if you flash a newer ROM with an older recovery you will more than likely see a similar error to this:
set_metadata_recursive: some changes failed

So how do I change recoveries?
you need grab a flashable.zip of the new recovery and then flash it in current recovery
or
a better and safer way is to use fastboot to flash the new recovery
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
*note, change 'recovery.img' accordingly if this is not how the image is named

two other quick notes:
*you can just fix the updater-script yourself to be able to flash a new ROM in an old recovery, but really this is time consuming and poitless
*another method to flash the recovery is to create a PC10IMG.zip and place on SDcard then boot to bootloader to flash, but more work than needed

Silly mistake led to softbrick..
Could you please help me with this problem?
I had CWM 6.0.4.5 flashed in order to install Flinny's CM11 Alpha 5, FC were very common so I was really excited for PureKat ROM
but then I didn't read the instructions carefully enough and switched the phone off instead of rebooting the system after leaving Aroma installer...
Now I'm stuck in a bootloop which constantly shows me the HTC splash, sometimes 2 seconds of CWM and then HTC logo again. I can get into Hboot menu but Factory Reset and Recovery lead back to bootloop, and my laptop (Windows 7 Professional) won't access the sdcard. Silly me also disabled USB debugging but that shouldn't be a problem because I did a full wipe before installing PureKat, right?
Anyways, I can't seem to establish any connection between PC and my DZ in Hboot, otherwise I would have tried to flash a new recovery just as you said
Any help is welcome, thanks in advance!
First thing to do would be to boot into bootloader and write down everything from that screen here, actually here

Is it safe to install ClockworkModRecovery 6.0.4.5 on HTC Desire Z (HTC Vision / G2)? On ClockworkMod site I found only 5.0.2.7 for HTC G2.
Yes it is safe, but not 100% perfect. The reason its not on the cwm site is that it isn't official and hasn't been submitted to become official, maybe some day.

For fastboot commend we need : eng hboot OR unlocked hboot from the htc website (limited commend, but enough for flash a recovery).
So , if some DZ user were too lazy like me , and didn't flash the eng Hboot, but did all the other steps from the wiki to get the root (including s-off), and won't to go through the wiki again, just use the demkantor PC10IMG file from post #30 here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1728208&page=3
It work for me. Downside : current rom will bootloop. Can't do restore CWM from 4ext. only fresh install.
Good point @overdose
I do highly recommend an engineering hboot and radio s-off for many reasons, but yes simply unlocking your bootloader will allow you to flash a recovery, but most fastboot commands will still be unavailable

Actually I planed to do so. I'm curious if your instructions applies to IMG files to (directly or with small modifications)?
Until you have an engineering bootloader most fastboot commands are unavailable. Grab the .zip from post 30 in that link and follow the directions there.
Alex was having a similar issue to yours earlier but he couldn't get the PC10IMG.zip to work on his SD card so he used the rebootRUU method, which could also work for you. I would advise to understand both methods as they can be helpful to learn down the road
To answer your question directly, you must use the .zip, .imgs will not work with either method

I was sure method with sd card would work fine so tried rebootRUU and it worked. Below is method that worked for me. It is simply whole instruction for getting new recovery when starting without eng HBOOT. This is just 'compilation' of instructions from Alex Mitter and demkantor.
Download DZ_PC10IMG.zip from demkantor dropbox
Connect phone to PC (adb devices to be sure it is recognized properly)
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
to switch to HBOOT. I didn't need to switch to fastboot as it was already in fastboot mode. You might want to use fastboot devices to be sure it is recognized properly again
Code:
fastboot oem rebootRUU
Code:
fastboot flash zip DZ_PC10IMG.zip
to flash eng HBOOT
Code:
fastboot reboot-boootloader
to get back to HBOOT and validate it.
Download CWM recovery from 1st post in thread
Code:
fastboot flash recovery CWMrecovery.img
to flash freshly downloaded recovery
switch to recovery from HBOOT to verify version and proceed with PureKat instalation from there

Hey pal first off, this is the wrong forum. This is the old wildfire forums not the wildfire s. But I shall help you out none the less
Since your phone is hboot unlocked but not s-off you need to flash your custom roms boot.img via fastboot just after you flash the rom via recovery. When you download the rom it comes in a zip file, unzip a copy of it and place the boot.img in your fastboot folder, then copy the zip to your sd card and then flash via recovery. Once it's flashed boot into hboot by using advanced reboot options I think its called. Then flash the boot.img using the command
Fastboot flash boot boot.img
Where boot.img is the name of the .img you took from the zip file (just in case you have renamed it and don't know why the command is not working)
Then do fastboot reboot and the phone should boot up okay. You need to flash the boot.img for every rom change that you do. Also should you decide you want to run a RUU you must relock you hboot or it won't run.

HI.
firste off i would like to thank you for taking the time to responde to my question and im sorry about posting in the wrong forum.
i watched the XDA DEV noob video on youtube about being a noob so before i posted my question i looked through each and every post i could find about my phone s problem but NO LUCK so i decided to ask the experts
*i did relock my bootloader before i ran the Ruu and it didnt work it said main version too old and since my costume rom is based on andoird 2.3.7 and my htc can only go as far as 2.3.5 and ruu wont let you downgrade so i figured it might not work.
*now you suggested that i flash the costume rom via recovery and thats the problem i cant even get in to my recovery it just gets stuck on the white htc screen and i tried flashing the recovery Again (twrp) and nothing. even other recoveries wouldnt work.
*i flashed about 4 roms and they all worked just fine even this last one and i didnt flash the boot.img and i was able to reboot normally
THANK YOU.

Okay so, let's recap.
You are on a custom android rom.
You have a custom recovery installed.
Your cannot flash the RUU as your run version is higher than the RUU.
Lastly you cannot boot into your custom Rom, or your recovery?
Do you want to return to stick it get a custom Rom flashed?

ok, ive requested this thread be moved to its correct forum.
before proceeding can you tell me when your htc wildfire marvel was made? after 2012?
can you flash clockworkmod recovery and then try flashing a custom htc sense rom
Then reboot back into cwm recovery (by selecting advanced/ reboot-recovery in the menus) and plug the phone into your computer via usb cable. open up your command prompt and move to your adb folder. type the following commands ( a # denotes instructions and should not be typed into the command window)
Code:
adb devices
#this should show your device up, maybe saying its in recovery mode
adb shell
# the command prompt should change to a # symbol
Now make sure you have a sdcard in the phone and then run the following command
Code:
cat /dev/mtd/mtd0 > /sdcard/misc.img
This should leave you with a file called misc.img on your sdcard. Lastly
Code:
exit
exit
exit
your command window should have closed. now upload this file to a online storage system like dropbox and send me a pm with a link to it. I will edit it and you can flash it back, this will relock your hboot and downgrade your software version so that RUU's will work. then we will run a RUU, returning your phone to stock and functional state

before proceeding can you tell me when your htc wildfire marvel was made? after 2012?
can you flash clockworkmod recovery and then try flashing a custom htc sense rom

Hmm.... Okay reflash twrp and see if it boots up. Without a recovery your options are limited. You need to be careful as your device uses a different kernel from older versions of the wildfire s. If you flash a older RUU version it will kill your phone.
Do you have any phone unlock shops near you?

Make sure when you go to the unlock shop you make sure they use an XTC clip http://www.fonefunshop.co.uk/Unlocking/xtc_clip.htm
If they don't have it then do not pay for an unlock. You need s-off not SIM unlocked. Make sure to ask for it. Once your S-off you can run any RUU and fix the phone but check in here first so I can ensure that its compatible with your 2012 edition of the phone ( as I said flashing one that is too old will kill the phone!)

HTC wildfire Rooted but still S-On..cannot flash CWM recovery and CM 7

Please help..
I've been planning to install a CM7 my old HtC Wildfire A3333 to give it a new life.I have successfully unlocked the bootloader through HTCDEV and gained root by using WinDroid..Also have SuperSU installed already and used ROM
Manager to flash CWM recovery/TWRP..But when I reboot to access Recovery it goes back to stock Android recovery and it says INSTALLATION ABORTED when installing Zip from SD card..I know I cannot use REVOLUTIONARY because my HROOT is 1.02.000 and I find it hard to downgrade to HBOOT 1.01.000..Did I mess up on something???
Thanks XDA..

you need to flash clockworkmod Via fastboot commands buddy. Download clockworkmod as a recovery.img and then flash it using the command fastboot flash recovery recovery.img, its similar to when you flashed the unlock_token.bin to unlock your hboot so the recovery.img needs to be in the fastboot folder.
Thanks HMM..Still cannot flash I'm sorry for being stupid this is my first time rooting..do i need to s-off first? ..please check my screenshots
ALSO tried your suggestion on PC49img.Zip..Also not working

Follow this thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1484124 do the s-off commands after you have downloaded the .img place it within your adb/ fastboot folder.

Flashing a custom recovery from a stock recovery wont work. It checks that the stuff its about to flash is from htc and a custom recovery is not made by htc. You must use fastboot. What errors if any is the fastboot command giving you?
Sent from my LG-D802 using Tapatalk
In the fastboot commands is (Waiting for Device)....I've waited for 15 mins but I think the PC is not recognizing the phone..It also says ONE OF THE Usb is not working something like that.....
I've read in one of XDA treads that Its possible to DISABLE Signature VERIFICATION
Will that work??one more thing, what is the easiest and PROVEN way to S-off HTC WILDFIRE with HBoot 1.02.000...much like revolutionary..Many Thanks..
Use windows 7
Windows 8 didn't work with fastboot only adb with my HTC WILDFIRE A3333, Windows 7 works install driver from windows
IF you are only looking forward for CWM recovery you don't need fastboot

Thanks..Yeah thats what Im really thinking because I unlocked it using windows 7..but I dont have access to window 7 right now..I'll try tomorrow..Hopefully I'll RESURRECT the worst ANDROID PHONE EVER! According to a recent Top Ten..
Done! CyanogenMod 7 installed on my Wildfire....Thanks heavy_metal_man and bluecub1st.. Really Appreciated It....Now i'm planning to
