Problem with Barcode Scanner - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi. I am often using http://qrcode.kaywa.com/ to generate QR codes (normally for sending SMS). I don't have any problems with my HTC Desire but unfortunatelly I do have troubles with my HTC Desire HD. After I generate an SMS QR code (for example), I scan it and press "SEND SMS". Normally, everything should be filled out (like on my HTC Desire), but when using DHD, scanned text doesn't show up in "text" field, as well as the number. I already wrote to the developer of the Barcode Scanner app, I got the response:
"It's an issue with the HTC Sense messaging app. It doesn't respond to the semi-standard intent extra that contains the body of the message. If you figure out what it's looking for, it's easy to set it too, but I don't know what it's expecting."
Can somebody help me how to figure that out, so that it would work also with Desire HD? Many thanks.

I'm using that site with Handcent SMS --> everything fine.
Maybe you'll give it a try?

Problem with HTC Sense People App

Hi,
I found a strange little bug with the HTC Sense People app.
I have all my contacts synced from my Google Account but the problem is "Call Mobile" has 44 at the start of the number. Meaning when ever I try make a call it says number not recognised - I think it needs to have +44. When I got into edit contact it has the actual mobile number with 077 etc...
Any suggestions?
I've noticed this, I'm betting the contact you have this problem with is linked to Facebook. If you look at that persons Facebook details I bet they've put a phone number in that starts with 44. There is no way around it unless you can persuade them to change it. It seems that it uses this info over the Google info. The only thing to do is to unlink the contact from Facebook till they sort their number format out.

Thanks for getting back to me and yes they are synced with Facebook.
I have found a little work around though, when you are in the dialer and have their name highlighted use the optical pad to move left and right and it will choose their other numbers.
Ah! That's interesting to know, although I usually select ppl to call or text via the people app, so it kinda stuffs you that way. Oddly it will work for sending texts but not calling.

Hey guys,
i just found out that if you change the number (from mobile to work or home or something like that) it sort of fixes it. You still get the wrong facebook number in there but ay least you also get a usable number to call.

'Anonymous' Text Messages

Every so often I get a blank SMS in my inbox with sender labeled as 'Anonymous'. Anyone have any idea what these are?
These are normally missed call notifications. Go into HTC SMS app & use the option to browse sim card messages
I get the same thing all the time. Not sure I understand the response given above though.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Go in messages then settings then manage similar card messages
I am guessing you will see your anonymous text here.
I am orange and I think these appear when I have a missed call
Since the HTC 2.2 update, which was supposed to fix this issue, the texts' sender is delta, as in the Greek letter instead of anonymous. Very odd.

Duh! Desire still converts sms into mms, even with Froyo :(

Any known fix to this annoying issue yet? If you type a message that's longer than 3 sms:es it automatically converts the message into a mms message. Normally I wouldn't care about a "small" issue like this, it's just that I have free sms and I pay for mms messages.
Google said this have been fixed in Froyo, and yes it seems they're absolutely right since the problem is gone on the Nexus one & most other phones running 2.2.
But nothing have changed on the Desire, the problem is still there... Sometimes I wonder if the Desire is running an eclair/froyo hybrid and that HTC have just manipulated the numbers in the "about" screen.
Sigh...
I can type upto 5 sms before it convert into mms.. stock Froyo here

Download Handcent.
I'm not saying you should switch to it completely (I wont, Stock SMS looks so much better) but you'll benefit from:
- Pattern/Pin lock for SMS messages (even for Stock SMS Program)
- For the rare occasions you're sending a long message, cut from stock SMS, paste into handcent and it shouldn't convert to MMS.

I know it's good and have lots of features, I've tried handcent before but I agree stock HTC SMS app looks so much better so I uninstalled it after a few days. But I might give your suggestion a try, thanks
handcent actually have a setting not to auto convert sms to mms...

its 5 here as well, it is meant to reduce expenses, because (here at least) if you set six messages it will cost more than one mms, hence the converting.
is it related to the sim card and the network preferences? maybe, but if it is than it should detect if you have free SMS and not convert.
either ways i think you should have an option to turn it on/off.
worth mentioning in android issues

I have an sms-flat --> mms more expensive. But all in all not a too bad idea if you pay for every single sms...

[Q] country code issue [any proper fix plz?]

have read a lot of threads about this issue
when i receive calls, there is no country code in number and some of my contacts are stored with country code included: result : Contact is not recognised
when i receive sms, country code is include in number and some of my contacts are stored without country code and result : Contact not recognised
this is the most stupid issue in android imo and i still haven't found a proper solution for that...... i don't quite understand why there isn't any proper fix (apart saving contact with 2 numbers (one with country code and one without country code) for that till now!
the next most stupid issue in android is sms ordering issue... (i still can't believe that there aren't proper fix for these 2 issues.. i use handscent sms for ordering issue... quite stupid honestly that u need a third party app for that)
It's just you. Works fine for me

i saw several threads with this problem : all threads are either without answer or there's a workaround (save 2 numbers per contact)... wanted to know if there was a clean way to fix this issue instead of saving 2 numbers per contact(pretty messy)
look how many people has this issue
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=4134
no solution on google's site since ages
i am trying my luck here... maybe there's a third party app that fixes it?
No one has a solution. I have installed touchpal dialer and it identify the contacts properly when I look at the call log. Is there a way to use touchpal dialer to handle incoming call screen so that it can identify my contacts properly?
was trying to write an app to fix this issue but realised that on the android emulator, there is no such problem... is it because on my actual phone, i am on htc sense? can someone with htc sense confirm that this issue occurs only on htc sense?

[Q] Text messages containing numbers

Hey guys,
Ive got a small irrite with my desire, if I recieve a Text message from my voice mail client, it will display the number of the caller who left the message, but will not refer to the name of the caller if the number is stored in my phone book.
Does anyone know how to do a work around for this or is there an app outthere that I just cant find?
I had this, too. For me a reboot solved the problem.
The names have never shown up...
It looks like the android system does not reference known numbers as the name stored in the phone book.
Ie.
You have 1 new voice message.
The last message was received
from +27xxxxxxxxxx
If my SE P1i knew the number it would show the name of the contact, not the number.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Well it will either include the number in the message or show it as coming from that number(mine does both).
If your voice mail does the latter, it will of course show up with the right name. If the number is just included in the message, however, it will not look it up for you.
There is a workaround, as chompsms recently added this feature to swap phone numbers in messages, if you have the name stored in you phonebook And it is working perfectly from here.
Thanks Mortenmph...
but do i have to change my sms app entirely, or does it intergate with htc's message apk?
When the name not shown then set the permission with adb-shell:
adb shell chmod 666 /data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/files/*
Thanks Michael,
All I have in that folder is the Facebook contact images, ??? - will I get the same effect as I did running chompsms?
Followed your advice, but nothing has changed....
Anybody able to help here???
Yes you will have to update the messaging app or make htc add the functionality to theirs...
It's all about how the app is programmed to show the text message, HTC's app shows it as is without looking at the content, and chomp search for numbers and replace them. You should be fine with chomp though it's got some vwery decent features over the original one.
