dk28 to stock - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all. First time poster, long time reader. I recently used the update.zip method to upgrade to froyo. I'm unrooted and would like to revert back to stock. I don't care about losing apps and stuff but ide rather not lose my contacts. Can someone please steer me in the right direction. Reasons for not likin the froyo upgrade include gps issues, battery life lower, keyboard response is terrible, and browser is laggy. I would just like to go back to stock and WAIT for the ota. Any help would be much appreciated.

Use Odin to go back to DI18. It is the quickest, least complicated way.
If your contacts are synched with your google account, then they'll load as soon as you put your email address and password back in.

Well, first, transfer all your contacts to your gmail account... open your contacts, hit menu->import/export->export to sdcard->import from sdcard and then choose to import them to your gmail account. Next time you have to factory reset your phone or anything, your contacts will show up as soon as you set up your gmail account on the phone.
Next, read the wiki (LINK), download the files needed to Odin your phone back to DI18 (listed in the wiki) and follow the instructions provided.

thanks a bunch for your replies. will work on this.

thanks bros but i edited my first post. i got my pw, but my contacts list is empty.
Did you save your contacts to Google or your phone? If phone: start telling people that you lost their numbers.
i always had it synched...anyways, before i did the update i did backup my contacts on titanium backup...if i root my phone now and download the program, would i be able to pull it off?
can i restore my epic back to the eclair firmware when i had my contacts, before updated to froyo? will it work that way?

No, you can't just restore back to Eclaire, you have to use Odin to go back. Read this to learn how to go back.
if you were rooted and have clockwork and nandroid backed up b4 updating then, u can restore data only and then u might get your contacts back, if not then i don't think u can...
Contacts.
BigBeard86,
First make sure your contacts are there in your google account on the internet. If they are not there, you may be hosed! If they are then you will be able to sync them again.
You could have been part of the problem last week when google lost many email accounts. Just a thought.
There is not a problem syncing as I am doing on my EPIC after I went from 2.1 to 2.2. Things are synced fine.
Fyi, if you had contacts in your old phone that got "ported" to your new Epic in the Sprint store or wherever you bought it, those will get deleted when you upgrade. Mine did the same thing. The reason being that they are not synced with your Google account automatically and are simply stored in your phone's memory.
Did you log into your gmail account on a computer to see if they are there?

[Q] Stop Application Auto Install When Flashing New ROM

Hi everyone
For the last few ROM's I have installed I have always had the "pleasure" of seeing all the bloatware that I had downloaded on the last ROM instantly come back onto this, rendering the new flash basically useless.
I know of the thing where you have to uncheck that box when you sign into Google, but it no longer works. All apps come back as usual.
Is there a way of somehow deleting Googles record of the apps I have installed? Or some other workaround?
Thanks
Flash an aosp rom, install at least an app, than reflash the rom you favour. I don't know any other way, sorry.

IIRC titanium backup has an option to remove links from the market. If you long press on the offending app and select "Disconnect from Market".
I hope it will work for you.
Thanks for the suggestions guys. Will try those next time I flash.
I found that market apps only download automatically if you sign into your google account on the first boot before you can use the phone, like when you choose your wifi, service provider, language etc. If you just skip the google account login part here, and login later, such as when you first open the market, the apps won't download automatically (although your gmail and contacts will then start to sync). Not sure if it's just me, but this seems to be the case for me everytime.

Retrieving contacts

Hi guys, I'm having a lot of trouble getting my contacts back on my new rom.
Maybe I just dont know how to sync *from* google to my phone, I have always chosen the google option when creating new contacts but have never manually done a contact sync with google. I looked around on my google account but it says I have no contacts. I have a Nandroid backup but cant read the .img files to get to the contacts. I'm currently trying nandroid browser but it keeps trying to load without actually loading it. I have a titanium backup but after re-downloading it to the new rom it doesnt have an option for recover, only backup in my contacts storage. I did a nandroid backup before flashing my new rom, but the new rom has a different kernel which wont let me recover to my old rom without flashing a compatible kernel of my old rom. It was so long ago that I dont even remember what my old rom was, but it was a sense based rom. I've tried to find a 2.2 stock kernel to see if my old rom will load with that but every download link I try is broken or the file doesnt work.
This is driving me insane, everything I try is a brick wall. If you guys have some insight that would help out a LOT.
Contrary to my name, I do have an htc evo 4g.
Any ideas? Does anyone know of a program that will read the .img files on my mac? Can I go to the sprint store to get the contacts? I think I've done that before, but I'm pretty sure they were on my phone as well....
You synced your Gmail account in accounts and sync right?
Yeah, it has the check mark next to contacts. Interesting tho, when I went to my google account nothing showed up in my contacts section... I found my old rom but the updated rom manager wont let me install it. I think they're gone. I also found another app (app extractor) and that didnt get them back either. I guess anyone worth staying in contact with will eventually call me hahaha!!
Make sure you have the right account registered and recheck the contacts sync icon just to be sure.

I am currently having the same issue. I have a rooted evo 4g and I did a factory reset and loaded the 2.3.5 rom last night. I linked up my google account with my phone and i got a lot of contacts back, but not all of them. The one's I really need (mom, wife, etc.) weren't there. I logged onto my gmail account through the pc and it had the same contacts that synced up. It was weird because whenever i manually entered a new contact, i made sure I created it with the google account and I synced the account before I wiped the phone. I gave up, and like the OP said, if they really want to talk to me they'll contact me. I would still like to retrieve my contacts though.
ok guys...ran into this with my wife. When adding contacts make sure you add them as a Google contact. Should be a drop down in the contact page...otherwise they will only be stored as "phone"contacts
Hopefully they are saved with a Nan backup. If so expect them to your computer as a csv file and import to Gmail and next time be sure you are adding a new one as a Google contact

Finally out of bootloop, but...

AT&T Galaxy S3, 4.1.1 JB stock.
I rooted last night, using Odin and started with Titanium back up. I thought I had everything saved to my external SD. I followed a youtube video on installing the Liquidsmooth ROM, and everything seemed to go well. When the phone reboots, there were just a few icons about loading back ups and a few dock icons. When I went to restore my back ups, there was nothing there. I thought I did something wrong, so I tried to go back to the stock rooted rom (root66) and got stuck in a bootloop for like 2 hours. Finally got it back up & running with all the factory settings and now I can't access anything on the phone. Titanium still says there are no back ups, I can't get Kies to transfer anything(I thought contact numbers saved here?), nothing is syncing from Google and I can't even get my phone numbers to sync with Facebook contacts. It says I have read-only access and it won't let me delete contacts that I don't have numbers for, only hide them. Can someone help me figure out how to restore my contacts? That's number one right now. If I have lost my apps, I can always redownload those, but the contacts are way more imortant. I'm still searching and reading, but hoping someone can point me in the right direction. Thanks guys!

In the process, did you wipe your internal/external SD?
Also, did you sync your contact with Google? That way, after a factory reset, you can connect with Google and it will put them back on your phone.

I might have wiped the factory one on accident, but the external sd still has my pics & music folders. The titanium back up folder on the external however is empty.
When the phone restarted after the bootloop fix, I had to add my gmail info again, and it never prompted to restore contacts. That's what prompted me to search for them , see I don't have admin access and see that I couldn't merge a contact I was text messaging with his facebook info because I have read-only access.

My phone is messed up. Can I install an updated ROM to fix?

Hi guys,
I accidentally deleted my 'calendar' files in an attempt to clean my phone to increase the speed. That has resulted in complete dysfunction of calendar functionality. When I use and/or reinstall google calendar app, it simply will not recognize my google account. In accounts, google sync is giving me a 'red' sync error. But other syncs seem to be working fine (contacts, mail, photos, etc.).
I'm guessing this can't be fixed now?
Should I consider putting on a new rom? My phone is already rooted. I've done this a few times before. Is there an appropriate rom? I absolutely need to use the t mobile's WIFI CALLING functionality. It comes in handy when i'm outside the country and have to call home over the internet.
Any suggestions or advice?
Thanks
Have you made nandriod/backup, if yes then restore from recovery. If no then you try factory reset/wipe data. If still problem not solved then flash the stock ROM from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1949687 as you need WiFi calling which I think will only be available with stock ROM.
I prefer nandriod every week and deleted the old one. It takes only 5 to 10 minutes
