How to change default actions? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

For certain actions, like opening a video file, the system prompts me for which application to use to complete the action. A check box in that dialog allows me to set that choice as a default action. If I have set a particular action to use a program by default, how can I break or change this association later? Example: I have car dock open with Google by default, but I want to go back to being prompted for the choice of Google or Locations again. Advice?
I am using Virtuous ROM 0.9.0.

Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > All. Then find the app for which you want to remove the default setting on and scroll down to where it says "Launch by default" and hit clear defaults.
Next time you try to do that certain action it will ask you which app to use.

Solved!
Thanks! That is exactly what I needed to know.

Default is Google's Audio Search thing
My default is Google's Audio Search thing.
I can find the app, but it doesn't show that its a default for something. And I know I've set that app manually to the search button and I also know there are more apps that might be assigned to that button.
What do I do now?
Greets,
Justin

I opened a picture after i browsed to it via Astro. when I clicked it I was asked which app I wanted to use to open it and if it should be default.
I choose the wrong of the 2 options - how do I change it?
Long press usually offers the option to change.. the other way is via manage apps, scroll down, clear launch by default

[APP Help] Widgetlocker

I am running Myn's Warm 2.2, and I can't tell if this is a ROM issue or what, but when I run widgetlocker, I have a custom slider going to my SMS inbox. I dont use the default messaging app, I use handcent/go sms, but whenever I use widgetlocker to the sms inbox, it automatically opens the default app, and gives no options for the other one's.
Any ideas of what to do?
P.S. I also edited some of the .png's, dont know if that could be the issue?
Wow...2 days and no response...have you made your new messaging app the default in the system?

Is it possible the SMS slider is pointing to the "Messages" app inbox specifically? In contrast to pointing to the system default value for your assigned SMS app?
I think it may be, because the only way to get it to slide to the app i want without using the ugly shortcut of the app itself is to delete the mms.apk. But go sms doesnt show notifications w/o the stock apk. Is there a way to change it to point to the system default? I get nbo option to make an app the default through widgetlocker?
Thanks for finally responding and trying to help guys
how do I make an app the default in the system?
I sent an email to the dev, and linked him to this thread, so maybe he will post the answer here. If not, i will, just in case this issue shows up in the future.
Android's handling of the app defaults is awkward, hence the various apps on the market (including my HomeSmack) to help switching between default Home programs.
The only way to set a default app as of 2.2 is to launch it in a generic way* when there is no default set. Then you'll get the list with the checkbox to set it as a default.
So really what you need to do is clear the default, then slide the SMS slider in WidgetLocker. You should be able to clear the default by:
System Settings > Applications > All Applications > Messaging (Or whatever current default app is) > Scroll down and click Clear Defaults.
Note, you want the Clear Defaults button, not the Clear Data button.
However some vendors might set their app at a higher priority making it impossible to change the default.
The coming update for WidgetLocker will allow you to select an app shortcut and then independently change the icon. Either to your own, or one of the WidgetLocker built in slider icons.
*For the curious:
Code:
Intent intent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_MAIN);
intent.setType("vnd.android-dir/mms-sms");
intent.addFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK);
startActivity(intent);

Has anyone ever told you they love you? Cause I do....awesome app too!
Sent from God, who uses CM7 RC1.
I love you so much lol.
So is there a way to use that last part so I can direct the slider myself or should I just wait it (i hope short) out?
Thanks so much again for responding

I'm running 2.0 and the functionality is indeed there. However I would just recommend deleting the slider off and then re-adding it and using a shortcut. Don't know if that helps, as I highly doubt that it will show the number of unread messages.
Hey Kevin I love the app but I keep having a few problems maybe you can help.
I'm on CM7 nightly #5 and widgetlocker slows it down significantly. I also keep running into the problem of all my Widgets disappearing randomly and never coming back. The background is still there but its blank.
Love the app. Thanks
HTC Incredible
I'm also having the problem of Widgets dissappearing.... happens after upgrading to a new nightly or after a random reboot..... being able to backup settings would be very helpful.....

Off topic, but for what it's worth, I'm having terrific results with WL in combination with an app called "No Lock" which disables the stock lock screen. No Root necessary.
I am rooted though running SkyRaider and now Warm 2.2 with Sense 2.0. I was always having problems with WL locking up my screen when the cpu got going and I was turning my screen on and off a lot quickly. Lots of black screens and such but never any problems without WL. So I run "No Lock" and WL runs perfectly.
Off topic, but good info and testing none the less.

[Q] Minor ICS bug? Launcher default setting...

So it's less of a bug and more of a typo maybe...
I have been playing with different launchers, and when I click my home button I just select a different one and sometimes set it to default and use it for a while to test it out. I'm torn between stock, go, and nova (I just wish Nova had a scollbar in app drawer like GO).
anyways... so when you have no default launcher set, you get to choose it in this little dialog. In the dialog there is a check box to make this action your default for the home button. When you check that box it gives a small popup that says "Clear default in Home Settings > Applications > Manage Applications."
Well, those options are not in the stock ICS 4.0.2 settings menu. I think this is a hold over from Gingerbread or something? Or is this due to one of the Launchers I installed taking over the home button? Anyways... seems like the option used to be in the settings but no longer is in ICS?
*edit: I realize you can change default settings for apps under app settings. The point is that there is no "Clear default in Home Settings > Applications > Manage Applications", unless I am misunderstanding something...
It's there, it's just labeled differently.
Pull down your notification bar and hit the settings button, then Apps, then scroll through your apps to find and select your current default launcher. Scroll down and hit the Clear Defaults button...
Ya, this is true, but its a bit of a hassle to scroll through a long list of apps. Would be much simpler if the settings menu was set up the way language/input is for selecting a keyboard.
But anyways, it's still seems like a typo in the OS to me... they should update the instructions on that popup menu.
its not a typo, I think you're just misinterpreting the wording that the app is popping up.
It's simply telling you to go to "manage applications", find the home app you wish to clear the defaults of, and clear the defaults...
Its not just launchers that can be set as a default (camera, gallery, music, etc. can all have 3rd party apps be defaults). So there is really no point in having a completely separate settings menu just for defaults, when the ability to clear defaults can be managed from the "all apps" menu.

I believe the OP's point is that in ICS, you don't go "Settings -> Applications -> Manage applications", you go "Settings -> Apps" and find the app (in Downloaded or All). So it's a string value for that popup that needs to be updated to reflect the settings menu structure in ICS.

Try the following:
In the app drawer
Go to "Car"
Go to settings.(Press the small buttons below the weather, clock etc)
Go to default navigation app and change it to what you want there.
I'm also having trouble with this. When ever I click on a contact address it opens up HTC Locations, and there are no defaults sets for Locations app to clear.

Thanks, that solved the problem. :good:
However there is tiny issue with it; when opening google maps with "Select other map" option, that dreadful 3 dot menu option appears on the bottom, and it stays there (even inside Google navigation if I load it from maps) till i switch out of the app and switch back in again. A minor inconvenience, but far better than always going to edit contact > Copy address > load Google maps > Paste and search for the address.

The ViperX rom allows you to change the navigation app to whatever you want. Not sure if it exists as a standalone mod.

Hi there,
1. In the app drawer, navigate to the stock Music app by HTC – the one with the red musical note.
Tap Menu > Add app shortcut.
2. Select your desired app from the list, but keep in mind that you’re limited to eight shortcuts in the music app (the app you select doesn’t necessarily have to be a music-related app)
3. Next, open the Car app.
4. Swipe from right to left, until you reach “Music apps.” (You should only have to swipe twice.)
5. Select whichever app you want.
6. Exit out of that app, and exit out of car mode.
That’s it! The next time you enter car mode, the app that you selected above will appear as the fourth icon in car mode.
The drawback is, you can only edit the fourth shortcut, and the change is not permanent (it will always display your last used shortcut within the music app), but the really good thing is that you can add just any app you want.
