Hello everyone and thanks in advance for answering my question. I have 2.2 android version and i rooted my phone with unrevoked. I keep getting notices on my phone for an update but everytime try to update my phone goes through the process and i have to take the battery out because an exclamtion point comes up. I rooted my phone for wifi tethering and want to keep this. So how do i upgrade my evo to the latest version and still be able to use wifi tethering.
Thanks in advance
DO NOT do the OTA update or you will lose your root. Go to the EVO development forum and get a ROM based on the 3.70 update.

A yeah , don't do the OTA from sprint. Now that you started the update make sure that you are still S-OFF
You can apply the ota fine if you have s-off. All you need to do is flash the stock recovery, apply the ota, then flash clockwork or amon recovery, and then install superuser. I have done it twice now. You can find more details here and android central forums.
Look at my other posts for more details.

Just picked up my EVO couple of days ago and I can't stop modding. Anyways, I rooted my phone and tried to do OTA. Well, after reading and searching I reflashed my phone with stock RUU and then updated. Rooted again and used Titanium to get all of my files back.
Very pleased but now I'm getting bored and need to do more modding.

I'm at a loss, as I remember reading it but can't find it any where to verify. When Sprint releases 2.2 Aug 3rd, since I'm rooted I should NOT accept OTA or force it to update...or ever do it, right?
Sorry for the dumb question, just wanted to make sure!
You should not.
thanks for the quick reply!
hi im using unrevoked3, how do i go about updating to froyo 2.2 when it comes out OTA? thanks!!
you dont until someone here roots it.
And go ahead and get off unrevoked now. Do a full root and use a rooted rom even if its a stock rom. You will be happier in the end. There are several methods posted in the Dev forum. Just pick one that matches the sweet version your currently running or follow the instructions posted previously in this forum.
Actually, I don't recommend full root if you can get by without it. Full root permanently screws up your PRI, even after unrooting. Until its fixed, people should only do it if they absolutely need it. You can use an ota update, but you will lose root until someone finds a way to root 2.2. Also, you can flash one of the stock 2.2 roms that are rooted. They should work with unrevoked.

It doesn't screw up your PRI, it just makes it a lower version. For some people this causes lower speeds on 3G; others are fine. But yes, once you do NAND unlock your PRI is stuck like that until someone figures out a way to update it.
I think flashing a 2.2 ROM with unrevoked and expecting it to stay rooted is a risky thing to do. I wouldn't recommend it personally. That is, unless someone has tried it and it works.
I rooted my EVO using unrevoked3 (the one you download and do from your computer, NOT the one that you download straight to the phone) and now my phone won't update to froyo. The progress bar gets about a fifth of the way done and then it goes away and gives me an exclamation point error screen and freezes my phone. Is there a way I can update to 2.2 without losing all my data?

You do realize you will lose root if you update to the OTA 2.2, right?
Yep, but I don't really care. I just need to figure out how to get this to work

Just curious, but why would you want to get the OTA 2.2, when you can keep root and flash to one of the nice, existing 2.2 ROMS already out there?
yep just run simple root and flash to the stock rooted. very simple.
I was able to flash netarchy's rooted stock Froyo using Unrevoked3 from the ClockwordMod recovery. No need for simple root.
You will need to get the 1.47 rom from shipped roms as well htc sync. Search the xda forums for the procedure. I did mine yesterday and it worked for me.

I'm having the the EXACT same issue! Have you figured it out?! If they are updating the way they suppose to I wouldn't have to root my phone! It sounds like they are so I would rather have the "official" Froyo 2.2

Hello all,
My roommate and I each have EVO phones. Both of us are rooted and running CM6. However, my roommate is complaining of no 4g and wants to go back to original HTC Sense Froyo. I tried to talk him out of it but to no avail. However, neither of us know how to do the official Froyo OTA. Any help on as to how?
Thanks
*Edit* He doesn't want root anymore because he wants to updated PRI
There is a link on here somewhere to the original HTC RUU file. From what I can tell, if you use a Sprint-provided RUU, you run the risk of losing the ability to root forever, but the HTC one wont.
I went from rooted and nand-unlocked back down to stock with the RUU. Once you are stock, then you qualify for the regularly pushed OTA updates.

Want to lose root? Use the leaked 'official' RUU here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=746705
Want to keep root? Boot into recovery, complete wipe and flash the following
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=743352
Edit: Also make sure your RPI will get updated by flashing that RUU.

STOP!!!!!!! Your roommate WILL NOT GET THE UPDATED PRI IF HE UNROOTS AND GOES OFFICIAL!!!! You have to wait for pri fix. The only way right now to get the new pri is to call insurance tell them whatever, drop ur phone in the toilet, pay the $100 and wait for a new phone. Trust me i know everything about this phone. As for 4g, tell him to run calkulins rom with netarchys kernal better battery life than cm6 and he will have 4g no problem. Hope this helps.

My wife got her replacement Inc2 today after the one she got last week just died. She was on Froyo so I might of.. swapped her phones.. anyways, I rooted, went to the bathroom and the stupid ota ran I guess because when I came back the phone was on GB 2.3.3 however my boot screen shows S-OFF. Can anyone help me to verify that S-OFF is indeed still off. I can post any screen shots etc.. I am still a noob when it comes to the Inc2.
If your boot screen says S-Off, you are S-Off

Did you flash clockworkmod recovery when you rooted? I didn't think the OTA would take if you had a custom recovery. In any event, since you're still s-off, you're fine.
I actually hadn't flashed recovery yet. Went ahead and flashed recovery. Superuser installed but busybox keeps failing. I am manually installing them since the patch I found also includes a rooted kernel but it is for Froyo.
The biggest deal for me is I am still S-OFF. I'm just confused as to how I managed to remain S-OFF after the OTA went through. If I can't get busybox installed I'll probably install Ginger Sense to obtain it.

Alpharev changed ur hboot to a higer version than the one in the OTA.. this is why it kept you S-OFF.. if I'm wrong someone correct me.
So basically I just got really lucky and kept my S-OFF even though the OTA went through.

No. stock hboot is .97. alpharev bumped you up to 1.something.. idk I used XTC clip.. since your hboot is newer than the OTA.. it keeps you S-OFF, pretty smart by alpha.
So does this open a gateway to first root in Froyo and then go gingerbread and retain the root?
Only way to be able to tell is to have someone repeat my steps which were: stock froyo, run AlphaRevX, did not flash recovery, Run OTA (this happened by accident I did not intend for the OTA to go through) after the OTA is finished reboot and if it is indeed a "gateway" then S-OFF would still be on. (After seeing S-OFF was on (and making sure it was okay) I went ahead and installed cwm recovery at that point)
Now when I use the term "gateway" I say this loosely because it doesn't fix anything for anyone who is already on GB. If indeed this works, it would only work for a small percentage who get Froyo and don't flash clockwork before running the OTA.
I just got my Inc2 as a replacement for my fascinate, came with 2.1 might try your steps and see if my root will stay after doing the OTA

I've been wondering about this. I got my Dinc2 early July and I'm still on stock, unrooted Froyo. Somehow the OTA update to GB hasn't hit yet. Could I run ApharevX to get S-off and stop there for now? I am happy with bloated stock for the time being and want to be able to receive OTA updates, but would like to have the option down the road to add Clockworkmod and flash custom ROMs. From kujayhawks experience it seems that this should be possible.
Basically, if I achieve S-off with AlpharevX now, will I be able to pretty much do anything later?
P.S. First post, though I've been lurking around for a while. Great forum/community.

It appears from reports that S-off stays after the OTA to 2.3, so yea, that would seem to be the case.
If you turn S-off with AlphaRev, you might want to just go ahead and install Clockwork recovery at the same time. Doing so won't root or install SuperUser or anything, but you would be able to then backup your phone and be ready to flash if you wanted.
If you install clockwork recovery you won't be able to receive OTAs though, just keep that in mind. You can flash back to the stock recovery, but unless you are familiar with ADB, it won't necessarily be an easy process.
my Incredible 2 had been running the Magnolia Beta for the past few months with no issues, until this weekend. It suddenly started to download an update from verizon, but since my phone was obviously rooted this ended badly. In short i was forced to roll back to froyo (2.2.1) but could not manage to change s-off back, so i cannot upgrade back to gingerbread. anybody that can help me out here would be greatly appreciated. at this point i would just be happy to be able to run the most current firmware.
Thanks

What all have you tried?
Have you tried to flash the 2.3.3 RUU through HBOOT?
Can you root your 2.2.1 if so then you can just flash custom rom again and update kernel.
I've tried the RUU, but that hasnt been working, adb wont recognize my phone, no matter the settings. Could I load the RUU through the phone without adb?
I havent been able to find any tool to root 2.2.1, because Revolutionary was updated to only Gingerbread.
EDIT: Just loaded the 2.3.3 RUU, which actually worked. Can i just root with revolutionary now? Or should i take other steps before that?
Just root with revolutionary and get to flashing.
