[Q] Apps/widgets installed on phone - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just want to know where the .apk files are kept on the phone because I want to manually back up so I don't need to download everytime I do a reset. I also want to keep them on my PC.
I've searched all the folders but could not find them. Are they hidden?

Try using a file manager such as Astro or ES file explorer. They have the ability to save an app to an apk.

I've got both but couldn't find any by using search function.
How do I do it ?

Just go astro, press menu button, choose tools then backup option.
Then select the app that you want to back up.

Question...can I open a rar file on my phone? I tried renaming it to a zip but when I extracted it there was nothing in the file
You should be able to with most file manager apps like astro or androzip.
Astro has the option but rarely works for me... maybe it's just my phone XD
That happened to me once. But on my nexus and I was playing around with ninja morph. Anywho I was running cm so I just reflashed it without wiping or anything with the same rom I was using and it put the browser back for me and didn't messing with the settings or apps. Maybe you could give that a try if worst comes to worse. Just if you have a theme you will prolly have to reflash the theme also. Hope you get it working though!

I'm trying to drop the files using Root Explorer, but it says it is read only. What do I need to do?

If I long press on the files I get an option for permissions. I can then select read-write options and then ok. But when I go back into permissions, they have reverted to their original state.
EDIT: Ok, I finally saw what you meant and installed the files, but no app in app drawer. I have rebooted just to be sure.
Go to were the browser Is downloaded to and longpress then select copy. Then navigate to /system and at the top of the screen toggle the button that says R/O to R/W, then select app dir and hit menu then paste.

How do I get an app off my phone?

I am trying to change certain images for my XDA premium app but I cannot seem to get my version to install...
I am backing up via "My Backup Root", then placing the modified images in the drawable-hdpi folder inside the app WHILE my SD card is mounted on my computer. I am overwriting all of them (using the same names and keeping the sizes the same). And then I tried installing the modified version through ES file explorer in the my backup root folder, no dice. Then I tried installing it by restoring a backup via my Backup root, but no matter what, my XDA App will not install with the modified images. I am using 7zip to replace images.
So you need to find a way to backup a non-system application while still being able to edit it?
Have you tried going straight into data and pulling the app with ADB? Using Super Manager, Root Explorer or ES?
Hell maybe you have resign it!
If you want to send over the files I'd love to play with it.
How would I pull it using adb pull? I've got ES File Explorer, but it's a non system app.
Using root explorer goto data/app and copy the apk to sdcard. Put sdcard in your pc and pull the apk and modifie. Then install

In ES there is a root explorer right?
Go into settings and at the bottom are root options. Enable them.
Then click the SD button at the top left hand corner and you should see your phones root folder. Then data -> app and find the XDA application. Long press and select copy, then paste it to your SD card. it will be named something like com.somethingXDA.apk, or net.somethingXDA.apk, or even org.somethingXDA.apk.
Also try renaming your MyBackup modifyed file to its actual filename. So for example "SetCPU" to "com.mhuang.overclocking.apk" or "XDAPremiumApp" to "com.somethingXDA.apk". I know for some Swype mods you had to do that.
This is my first time using ES File explorer! And I really like it!
I don't understand, I did exactly as Mystery said, and app still not installed. For some odd reason, my edited .png files are smaller less kbs than the original APK. Does changing colors only alter data size?

You have to put it in /system/app now, because modifying the APK's contents in any way will invalidate the signature. You could also resign it, but it won't update.
Ok, I'm getting farther and farther, but how do I fix the permissions to paste it in System/App? It's a non system app, shouldn't it be copied into Data/app?

Im not sure how to do it in es , but in root explorer you long press the app and click permissions and put checks in all three of the first column and just the top one in the 2nd column and leve the rest unchecked. Its ok to put it in system/app.

I'll give Root Explorer a try.
Are you decompiling it or just opening it via 7zip and swapping images?? If you aren't decompiling then the signature is fine to run, but not install.. just put it in /data/app.. permissions won't matter.. if you are decompiling, that's a different story.

[Q] Save APK file from Android Market ?

Hi,
I have some applications I want to save, I mean the APK file.
But I find them only on the android market, and doesn't see how to save the .apk file on my disk (for future use for example).
Do you know if the apk file is stored somewhere in the phone ?
Thanks
Is your phone rooted? It makes a difference. If not rooted you can use mybackup from the market to backup the apps. Never tried it and I am guessing it won't backup paid apps and only free versions. But it might.
If your phone is rooted you can find your apps in the data/app/ folder.
Once you have installed the App, look in /cache/download. Most apks will be in there.
You don't need rooted phone to save (backup) apk's. Just use MyPhoneExplorer which has the function to backup all installed programs (apk's) to computer (also backups SMSes, contacts, etc)
D>
yes, the phone is rooted.
I checked with Estrong explorer in the folders data and cache and there's nothing ...
The idea is to keep the apk files somewhere when they are not directly available on the net, only using the android market.
Back them up on titanium backup then when you want them again just restore them using titanium again, you can restore them fresh or with your old settings, hasn't failed me yet

Look in data/app as I said. This is the location of all user installed apks. Unless you are using a ROM that uses a different location. Only familiar with sense builds myself. Or use a program that can backup apps. There were 3 mentioned in this thread.
apk with a manager go to system / app. they should be, and extract and save hello
Data/app or system/app?
Confused.

Either or, depending on what you're after. Apps you've installed (e.g. from the market) will be in /data/app, system apps (e.g Sense and the apps bundled with it) will be in /system/app.
//sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk; all errors entirely intentional.
If the directories/files are not there then check that ES file explorer is configured to show hidden files.
Jon
For unrooted devices, using ES File Explorer:
1. Open ES File Explorer
2. Press Menu >> Manager >> App Manager
3. Long press the application and then press Backup
4. .apk file will be saved to /sdcard/backups/app/

[Q] system folder and lang cahnge in MIUI rom.

from the headline, where is it? am i blined?
anothre thing, where do i find the build.prop file in the system folder, so i can change the lang in my phone?
thanks for any help.
p.s
sorry for any english mistake-not my prime lang.
Hi
To view system folder u will need root explorer or similar file manager. Inside the system folder is build.prop
Ordinary file managers will only show SD content.prob why you can't see it, there is prob a free file manager also but I only use root explorer as I find it very good.
Hope that helps

i use ASTRO file manager. am i loking at the wrong place?
Astro only views SD card contents, you need one that will view phone file s
The system folder is on ur phone not SD
Download file expert from market that's free
Open it ,on local tab just press back arrow in top right corner, then click the back slash this will bring you too all files.
Then click system
Hope that helps

you are great! works fine.
how can i replace it with another build.prop file from my PC?
Not sure from PC assume it would be thru adb but I don't no much about it
U can do it manual just put it on ur SD then copy and paste it to ur system folder ,make sure permissions match the original
Try root browser lite its free and works much better than file expert allows copy paste moving and permission changes.
Long press on files for all options

I downloaded the User Manual to the Downloads folder.
How do I put it (or a shortcut to it) on my Home Screen?
Thanks, cb

If you have ES File Explorer (if you don't, it's free on the market), go to sdcard/download, press and hold until the menu comes up and select shortcut.
