Using the unlock button doesn't always make my screen show up. Yet, the lights for the four buttons at the bottom of the screen. Sometimes, the screen even comes up but it keeps flickering.

Please read the posts in the Gingervillain thread. Are you OCing?
Going through what I can of the 50something pages of the thread. And yes, I am overclocked.
Props for trying man, everybody appreciates that.
Um okay, that actually might be the problem... What are you OC at? Are you using the screen on/off animations? Are you using SetCPU?
Try to take your OC down a notch, one step at a time, and try switching the screen on and off each time to see how much you can OC and still have the screen functioning normally.
So flashing the CM7 Gingervillain ROM, there was already a kernal built in but I only maxed it out at 1401mhz. Yes, I am using SetCPU and I'm also using the custom profiles.
I'm pretty sure that 1401mhz is at a stable level because 1497mhz was even tested to be pretty stable.
I see that you are running the same ROM, but since you haven't mentioned having a similar issue, I assume you don't have this issue? I'm just scared that one day the screen won't be turning on at all.
I am currently not OC'd, since I personally don't feel the need to be. But as you can read in the other thread, overclocking has provided screen problems for tons of people. There is no border that says "Okay now your screen's gonna start acting freaky", it differs for almost everyone.
I tested it myself a while ago: I had no problems up to about 1,2 GHz, but when I mine to 1,4 or higher I had the same issues.
But like I said, it all depends, there are people who are OCing at 1,5 and have no complaints..
Overclock to 1.2 area and let us know what's up

What ROM are you running? Rooted or not rooted? These are things you should remember to post when you're having issues. Makes diagnostics much easier
All I have done was root it. I didn't install any rom or anything. I only rooted it to get the wifi tethering.
So screen turns on, but you are not able to press "answer" when a call is incoming?
Its telling you to hang up on stock rom and go custom. Plus you have better support specially being in this community.

I'm inclined to agree. Custom ROMs definitely go waaaaay above and beyond the stock one. I use a combination of MyBackup Root and Titanium Backup free for contacts/messages and apps, respectively. Once you go custom, you never go back
What I was trying to say is that the screen is locked when the phone rings and then when I go to answer the phone it will not unlock until the phone stops ringing. But like I said in the first post this doesn't happen all the time. I would say about 25% of the time it does this. Sooo... Thats what I was trying to say.
Are you using Google Voice?
Are you using Google Voice to direct your calls? I have 3 phones that GV directs my calls to, and I've noticed that sometimes that causes one or the other of the phones to ring "late". Sometimes the Inc, sometimes not. I don't notice an issue when someone calls my direct line to any of the phones.
I am wondering what you would get if you use an app like No Lock that disables the lock screen.
I started using it when I had a roms lock screen fighting with a launcher's lock screen. I would get stacked lock screens, but only sometimes.
Running without a lock screen is not for everyone, so think about how you use your phone before disabling this great security feature. For me, my phone never leaves my side, and I mean NEVER. And if a "friend" starts poking at my phone I start poking in their face or purse... They learn after awhile.

I'm not sure if I would like the no lock because I tend to put my phone in my pocket all the time and it would just turn on and pocket dial people. LoL

SetCPU?
Assuming screen is off when it cannot be unlocked - but...
Are you running SetCPU w/ a low screen off profile?
If not, maybe install SetCPU, and set a higher frequency in the screen off profile settings.
SetCPU is available in the market; it's also available as a free d/l for XDA members here on XDA.

Good call, I do remember when I was revving CPU way down with screen off. When it had been off for ~1-2 hours it'd be sluggish and take a bit for the CPU to rev back up. Never used it that long though because the Kernel I'm using now does this and using setCPU just chews up battery.

Well, there's something to try then - if the kernel is making the device slow to wake, use SetCPU to bump up the screen off profile and see if the issue persists.
Couple folk note just this issue in the kernel threads.
This is a known problem I struggle with myself. You may find that you can stroke up to deny the call but not unlock. It seems that this is some kind of grounding problem. Hearing that I tried setting the phone down and swiping while I wasn't touching it otherwise with some success. I've heard a quick cycle of the power button followed by an immediate swipe down can work. Some report pressing the screen firmly before swiping works. I usually just swipe up, call back and say "sorry about that, what's up?" After all, most people are used to drops and stuff because of Iphones.
I periodically goog "incredible can't answer" looking for the golden bullet.
After originally sending Tillus a PM as he had a similar issue with another ROM I thought I had better post here.
I have tried Oxygen, CM7 and Redux but I get this problem with all of them. Everything runs fine for a few days and then I go to unlock my phone and the screen stays blank. The keys light up but the screen stays just blank. Tried Back-Trackball-Vol down (as suggested in post linked to in PM below) but it didn't work. I then have to take out the battery and restart.
Once it starts happening the gaps between it happening get smaller and smaller. It has happened 4 or 5 times today alone.
First time, on Oxygen, my phone eventually wouldn't turn on any more and I had to get HTC to fix it under warranty.
Then I tried Redux where it happened after a few days. Someone on here suggested I look at the CPU settings. I did and saw that Redux had a power save mode, so I tried that and it seemed to work but after a few more days the same thing happened. Although this was after a reboot so perhaps the phone didn't retain power save mode afterwards.
On Sunday I loaded CM7. Worked for about 24 hours before the blank screens started.
Running ONDEMAND governor, Min 245 Mhz, Max 998 Mhz.
Any ideas?
Here is the PM I sent to Tillus for info:

Hope you don't mind me sending you a PM. I noticed you had the same issue as me (screen not turning on from lock screen http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=9652281#post9652281). Did you ever find a permanent solution? I'm getting this issue with Oxygen, Redux and CM7.
Thanks

Hi,
uhm, I think this was a specific Auraxtsense issue which was resolved eventually. I never experienced this fault again - neither in a later auraxtsense version nor in oxygen (2.0.3) which I am using now.
Are you overclocking your cpu? Maybe you set the screen-off frequency too low? Or are you using a undervolt-kernel with very low settings, especially in low cpu frequencies?
As I said, I haven't experienced this issue for a while now.

Did you try keeping the power button pressed for a few seconds? I know, it sounds silly
Are you sure you don't have this problem on a 2.2 rom? I don't see you mentioning it in your post. Only that you have this issue with 2.3 roms.
What kernel do you use? Try a SVS kernel, don't use a HAVS kernels for now.
Also are you sure you tried the latest version for let's say Oxygen? From the oxygen changelog:
v2.0.3
Fixed font bug introduced in previous version
Fixed pmem exhaustion *
* The pmem exhaustion was causing the so called 'black screens'
at random intervals

I'm fairly new to this so I have only tried 2.3 ROMs since rooting. Obviously phone has been running official sense just fine on both 2.1 and 2.2 for about a year.
Also, apologies for this, but I don't know what the kernal is. Just followed the noob video tutorial. Is it Alpharev?
Haven't tried Oxygen since RC7 so I might try it out.
Seems to be memory related as just after I posted, something slightly different happened, I pressed the lock button and the lock screen appeared but then froze. After a couple of minutes the screen eventually locked again with a very slow jerky animation. So I have just removed a couple of apps that seem to be running all of the time, App protector pro and StumbleUpon. No crashes since then (2 hours).

Hi,
Sometimes when i click Home button Middle-Bottom of the screen.
physical buttons's Backlight turning on but screen doesn't come up.
I have to try at least 5-6 more times for screen to show up.
What is wrong with my phone ?
It's just sometimes really annoying..
Thank you for reading.

Seems like extreme lag to me. The next time it happens check with a program (like OS monitor) the cpu usage. The situation that you described happened to me once, the MtpApp process was using 100% cpu and i couldn't use my phone properly until i rebooted it.
I faced a similar issue on a Xperia Ray
Its hardware i guess, flashing stock didnt work for me
What i say is you should flash stock FW
Thank you for all those answers !
I'm using DoomKernel 2.32.9 ( I Guess it's 19v )
2.3.7 Modded GB Deluxe Edition ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1533332 )
It was happening more before i started using Modded GB Deluxe Edition.
But it is still happening, and still a lot annoying..
Thank you for reading.
Best Regards.
If your using a program like SetCPU or no-frills cpu control make sure that the minimum clock frequency is not set to 122MHz. Try set it to atleast 245MHz. I tried setting the "screen off" CPU to the minimum on SetCPU before in the hope to get more battery life, but whenever I wanted to wake the phone there would be a 2-3 second lag before the screen showed up. I hope this helps.
I guess this will work.
remove your SD card, connect it to a PC & format it, Insert it back.
@adielee
I wasn't using anything like SetCPU back than. So it can't be the problem.
Thank you for your answer.

Okay, will try it. Sounds like a good idea.
But why is this hapening ?

Maybe you can try flashing the stock kernel to test? i tried flashing a non-stock kernel a few times before and results were mixed and never perfect for me (don't really know why). Sometimes it would randomly glitch and the screen would turn black for about 1/2 a second or something. Wifi would sometimes be intermittent despite flashing the modules for some as well.
I'm not experienced enough to fully understand but I'm thinking that it could be a regional thing? I mean, how signals differ between regions?
So.......
Did it work........
I have a problem that I can't seem to figure out. It started when I first tried the SOS rom with Lionfish. At first everything on my evo was running amazingly smooth. Then out of nowhere My phone started lagging like crazy. Sometimes my screen would take forever to wake up after I pressed the power button. The capacative buttons would light up but the screen would take a few seconds to come on. Sometimes it wouldn't come on at all. I decided to just wipe and try Synergy rom (my current rom) which is supposedly very reliable. After a few days the same exact problems started occuring again. I'm wondering if Lionfish is the issue? Has anyone had a similiar experience? Any help would be much appreciated.
Lionfish is undervolted. Just flash a stock kernel and troubleshoot yourself. Not all phones handle undervolting the same.

Ok, I'll try and see if that works.
Hey all,
I experienced something a few mintues ago. I installed a new rom, Blissdroid. I 'discovered' that the backlight of the touch input (under the screen) was reacting dynamicly to sunlight. It went off in full sun. I couldn't find a setting to let it lighten up all the time.
I went back to Virtuous Unity, 2.35. It seems like the same thing is happening. I don't know if it's just normal (and I never discovered it before) or is there a setting I have to change (because I can't find one)?
Someone who can help me?
Thanks!

I tried that, didn't work.
For you it is always lighten up, even if you are outsise/inside where it is really bright? When I go outside, full sun, those 4 touch inputs will stop shine. It seems there is something wrong with my DHD? Or Am I mistaken? Someone who can confirm it is always lighten up?

Oh, so it is just a normal feature of DHD? Weird that I just discovered that yesterday
rcmix 4.0 and roms that use rctweaks have settings for this. alternatively you can set it to your exact preference if you edit framework-res according to this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1034743&highlight=systemui+apk
the link is manly aimed at tweaking your autobrightness, but it has info on butons too
Thank you. I only feared a problem, caused by changing ROM, as I never saw that before. I Thought those inputs were always lighten up, in every dark/bright situation.
depends on rom authors preference i suppose
if you are using sense 3.5 runnymede port, you can also flash tweaks as addon. some very nice features in there
Thank you all. I'm not great in flashing ROMs, certainly nog all those tweaks. I tried Virtuous Affinity and Blissdroid, but in both I heard a pop sound after playing music, sound, ringtone,... It seemed like I was not alone.
So I went back to Virtuous Unity 2.35, which doesn't give me any problem, except for a random bootloop from time to time (for example after playing Angry birds and once just after sending a message) what I can fix by replacing the battery. This happens 1 time in 3 months or so.
I just don't want to brick my phone, so I don't experiment much. Maybe one day, when I've got a new phone, I can use my DHD to experiment more.
