Here's my first custom ROM for the A7.
It has support for Microsoft's XBox 360 controllers and some bundled emulators. Wired controllers just plug in to the USB port. Wireless controllers need the USB Receiver for PCs. This makes a great combo for a portable gaming station with the HDMI output.
XBox 360 Controller:
The controller can be used for some basic navigation around Android OS. The buttons need to be configured in each emulator.
They are mapped to key presses as follows:
A = A
B = B
X = X
Y = Y
Left Bumper = L
Right Bumper = R
Left Trigger = T
Right Trigger = Z
Left Stick Click = 0
Right Stick Click = 1
DPad = Left/Right/Up/Down (in landscape mode. it will be sideways in portait mode)
Start = ENTER
Back = ESCAPE
Xbox Guide = HOME
Apps:
The emulators included are free/lite ones from the market place. If you like them or to save state, purchase the full versions. The script that installs these is supposed to only do it once, so they should be easy to uninstall if you don't want them.
ConnectBot and Dolphin Mini Browser are also installed on the first boot of this ROM.
ADB:
The ROM automatically sets up ADB to listen over tcp on port 2323. This will make your device a little less secure but makes development and debug much faster for me. To disable this open a command prompt and type:
su
setprop services.adb.tcp.port -1
stop adbd
start adbd
You will have to do that every reboot to disable adb over tcp.
Base:
This is built off Dexter's 1.1 Mod, so all his changes should be in here too. GMail and Market seem to work fine.
To Install:
Copy update.zip to an sdcard and put it in the tablet. Power down the tablet. Enter recovery mode. Wipe the Cache. Wipe user data. Install update.zip from the sdcard.
Known Oddities:
The LED ring on the wireless remotes will flash the entire time, but it functions fine.
The LED ring on a wired controller will advance by 1 section each time the device sleeps/wakes up.
The controller sends all its keys on first connection.
Only 1 controller input is supported for now. The wireless receiver supports upto 4 so hopefully I can get some multiplayer going soon!
Link:
I've uploaded the update.zip file to Mediafire.com since I don't have the webspace anywhere to host a file this size (90mb). The file reference is "2hm8i9jt32btmkw"
This forum will not allow me to post a link direct link since I'm a new user, so if another user could post it ( "mediafire.com" then "/?" then "2hm8i9jt32btmkw" ), I would greatly appreciate it.

I'm trying it too. Might as well since I'm probably going to return of and get a Adam.
Just wondering ... this is not a multi-touch screen ... can you control the D-Pad and press like A Button without lifting the D-Pad ?

Yeah, it lets you hit multiple buttons at once.
In Mario 3 I could hold the run button and use dpad, then jump/fly without trouble.
In Mario 1 I had trouble changing directions in the air while jumping but I think that is part of the game.
In the PSX emulator I could hold Circle & DPad to run around.
The only strange thing I can think of is that the Left Trigger and Right Trigger are converted from Analog to Digital (they measure 0-255 but only report on/off). Because of how I did that, games probably wont recognize holding down those buttons, only a momentary press.

MOD Edit: You got it
Generic Controllers
I've been able to map keys on a small USB keyboard to control my emulators. I installed your mod, and I cannot get it to work with a USB Logitech controller.
I don't have a wired 360 controller, but I do have wireless. How would I get that to work? Do I just have to have the USB 360 Reciever for Windows? Thanks in advance.
Thank You - SlingPlayer App question
Thank you for your work on this rom.
I was able to get things working well but i'm having a small issue with my slingplayer app not being able to open. It installs fine but when I click to open it the screen goes black for a second and then returns to the home screen. It was working using Dexter's 1.1 rom before but I occasionally had to open it 2-3 times before it worked.
Any idea what the problem could be?
One other question - Do you notice the screen is pixilated on the external display when you hook up your a7 via hdmi?
X
XBOX 360 PC Controller
Apparently I found the LAST wired 360 controller in town! Everywhere I went this week only had the wireless controllers. That would be fine if I had the USB receiver for it.
Anyway, I've been using the controller with my emulators and it works like a champ! It is very touchy on diagonal directions in games like Contra for NES. In the levels where you run side to side, and face up to the walls firing straight and not diagonal is a pain.
Has anyone had any success with PSX emulators? I got one off the Marketplace and I haven't gotten it to work yet. I've only tried one Bios so far, but I'll keep at it.
I've also noticed in this ROM my internal memory doesn't display correctly anymore. It worked in Dexter's 1.1 Mod.
I ordered my controllers off ebay. 2 for $50. I've got the PSX emulator to play. BUT its very choppy, and the sounds awful. I tryed Diablo and only got to the first mob and my cha glitched out. That being said All the other emulator work 100%!!!
Thanks so much creators of awesome!!
I tried installing your mod - did a wipe and cache wipe before install - plugged in my madcatz xbox360 wired controller, and it wont work, is there something in settings I have to change? The light flashes, but it wont control anything.
Thanks so much for this Mod. It really opens up the gaming on the a7. Will there be a update from Dexters new update?
update
Great work.
Update with new Dexter mod?
To use a wireless remote, you do need a Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows.

I edited the driver to only support Microsoft brand remotes to simplify working on it. I'll add back in the other stuff now since I have a better idea of how it works.

Paired my Logitech DiNovo Mini with my Xoom on 3.1, and both mouse and keyboard in it work perfectly. It is just the right size for getting some work done, though the mouse could use a bit more acceleration
All in all, a great little accessory - next step is to make a charger cable for USB so I can leave the DiNovo adapter at home.

Captivate always on mikey's latest wonder, whether Serendipity or GR-11
I'm uploading a youtube video but will describe my findings with my DiNovo Mini:
- It's responsive enough for government work
- Home is FN-e (explorer)
- Volume Up and Down buttons work
- Rewind, Stop, Play/Pause and Fast Forward all work
- Page Up and Page Down work great in a browser
- Mouse control is great in an RDP client connected to a windows box: I will put my foot in my mouth on this one. This functionality alone enables all levels of professionals to hit the field knowing they can have dependable RDP support and also have the precision and control of a mouse while using the tablet. I could see a doctor carrying this from room to room with a little dinovo mini, setting it down and entering in patient information all while keeping his own equipment secure. The uses are endless.

I have a similar setup and I also swear by PocketCloud.
Out of curiosity since you guys are Pocketcloud users. I just set it up for the first time (thanks for bringing it to my attention!) and was wondering if you guys know if it supports multiple monitor setups? I run 3 mobitors on my main PC and would love to be able to switch between monitors. Is LogMeIn ignition my best bet?
Thanks!

When used in RDP mode I can tell you that it will not. All desktops get squashed into one. VNC mode may be different.

In Logmein, I can pick which monitor I want, or watch all three at the same time. I can select through the menu, or shake to switch. Pretty neat.

When using the bluetooth keyboard as a keyboard, does the on-screen keyboard still pop-up or do you get to use the Xoom full screen *and* type?
I would like to know what the best app for making the XPlay a PC Gamepad is. Preferably a WIFI Gamepad like DroidMote. DroidMote makes the XPlay's D-pad mapped to the Arrow keys, which is useless for emulators since you can't press more than one Arrow key at a time. Is there a better one that actually have all the keys mapped as GamePad Buttons to allow me to press more than one key at a time? Or could someone make a simple one that works through WIFI?
Thanks!
From time to time i use pcon
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.pcon
It can be used over wifi, play's keys are bounded to pc keyboard's keys (so it can be used both with wasd and arrow key games)
On pc side, program is running in browser

Look's promising and i'll try it, but by the reviews, it seems there are loads of problems. X and L button not working, App closing from D-pad interaction, X not having a mapping, and O and L having the same mapping. I wish someone would actually make a proper gamepad for XPlay... But i'll give this a try!
I've found the perfect one! nJoy is the best i have found so far since it allows you to map the buttons to any key on the keyboard. I'll be using that from now on and i recommend this one to people who are trying to find a good app for this! Thanks for your help!
DroidMote client is made to interact also with real internal and external hardware controller and you can press all buttons and analog sticks
simultaneously
As example: the internal controller of the nvidia shield or any other external controller that is recognized from android as standard controller and use the standard customizable keylayout.
You can see examples in this videos:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BM6W3Dq_yqQ
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTDCMRbg2Lc
The d-pad of xperia play is not a standard analog stick, for this reason is automatically mapped as arrow. but you can solve with many tools on windows. For example joytokey v5 can transorm any buttons in what you want on your emulator or game.
Instead for normal configuration with a real hardware controller internal or external you can use x360ce for configurations like in this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubz_hJldAM4
this information are related to the last client and last windows server. UPDATE your droidmote windows server if you can't press buttons simultaneously

I got the latest version from the forums and it didn't allow multipressing. Also, neither x360ce or Xpadder worked to re-map the controls. nJoy allows this within their program so it works very well. And DroidMote makes the face buttons actual button mappings, and the D-pad keyboard mappings so it's more difficult to get it working. nJoy maps all to Keyboard Keys. I'll be using nJoy from now on until i find a superior one.
Hi
I've been toying with the idea of using the note as amongst other things a sort of game tab.
With that said, I've been researching around the web and found a plethora of gampads both usb and BT.
Now the one thing that seems to be an issue is game support and remapping of keys. Also in alot of cases ( samsung gamepad!!! ) you also have to repurchase the games either from playstore or from developer xxxxxx market .
I've tested a few , amongst them steelseries free, but there is always something missing.
For example I love the size and feel of the steelseries, but the game support is so so, and even games that it does support have missing features/ functions. Best example GTA 3 + steelseries free = no button for horn in the game ( a few missions actually need that)
Now I've considered getting a ps3 controller, but I'm not planing to root my unit anytime soon ( unless the whole knox issue is sorted), but then I'm left with the question is there a way to remap key without root?
Or for that mater are there any other controllers that would allow that without root??
Anyone?
Check out the Nyko Playpad. I BELIEVE with the Nyko Playground app you might be able to do the reconfiguration to your liking.
My review of the pad is here: http://reviews.greenrobotgamer.com/game-review/nyko-playpad-pro-controller/
Can anyone confirm the remapping of nyko is possible without root??
Anyone have anything to add to this?

Try a wired ps3 pad with sixassix or however its spelt its not to problematic but unsure if you can remap without root but I'm sure that will be your best bet its quite easy to remap and build touch profiles just search YouTube and you will be well away
I have a moga controller and use the universal moga driver app. It allows me to use the controller as a virtual keypad (gamepad mode requires root) and it works just fine for my PSOne and SNES games.
I'd also recommend the moga pro. Best gamepad out there. Official and unofficial driver app, for gamepad or keyboard input and complete 360 style layout. Also very nice attachment for smartphones and works with alot of games out of the box and all emulators i tried have a profile for it. Epsxe for example even with analog support.

Hm not sure if I understand correctly what you mean so I'll try
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.obsidianx.android.mogaime
with this app you can use the gamepad in "keyboard mode" meaning you can map any button on the gamepad to any "key" possible on the android keyboard. In this mode all keys are digital buttons though including the analog sticks, because that's the way keyboards work. This works without root.
The app has a gamepad mode which enables full analog support for the sticks but that requires root.
-->BUT there is an official moga app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bda.pivot.mogapgp) which also has two modes which you can switch to with the controller itself. There is a "moga" mode (green light) and a standard HID gamepad mode (orange light). With those two modes you're able to basically play every android game that has built in gamepad support, including full analog sticks. And both the ps1 emulator i use (epsxe) and the N64 emu (Mupen64) work with one of those modes out of the box. I don't even have the universal driver installed anymore because it is not needed in most cases.
Now to your other thing, I believe you mean mapping touchscreen input to the buttons? Bad news: There is no app or controller that allows you to do that without root. As far as I know at least, and I was following the development of those apps quite closely, even worked as a beta tester for this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.poke64738.usbjoygold
Just the info I was looking for
While on the subject, does the sixaxis app work without root? Might be able to get my hands on a ps3 controller.
Strongly considering moga at this point.
btw any experience with the moga pocket or hero (small one) ??

Sixaxis and a PS3 controller work very well, have touchscreen support and allow remapping but you have to be rooted. I have used Sixaxis on my Xoom and S4 (both of which are rooted) but thanks to Samsung and their stupid Knox nonsense, I cannot use Sixaxis on my Note.
I figured that you need root to get touchscreen part working, but do you need root for the rest ( on the sixaxis app) ie will it work at all without root?
Not keen on shelling out 25$ and realising that I might as well bought a moga hero or pocket for a 10 or so more that would to the job just as well.
btw any thoughts on nyko playpad vs moga hero or pocket?

Just read the description of the app on play store. The first line under important says Root required. So yes it needs root. And I'm sure you'll find reviews of those controllers on YouTube.
You can connect a ps3 controller to a android wireless but you will need root privileges. An OTG Cable Could be used to connect the controll with a wire and without root.
The working/non working sideloaded apps, accessories & modules thread for Root & Non-Rooted AFTV2
I'm starting this thread so that some of the new or regular users have somewhere to compare accessories/sideloaded apps & experiences with each other, please help each other & add any good compatible apps or xposed modules so we have a place to find new stuff for our Amazon Fire Tv 2. There will also be a working & non working section. Add any in the comments with some information (version numbers too if needed), & if there are problems with them? I will add them to the main front page (post1).
We can only operate this if we all work together so feel free to add any working or non working in the comments below.
PLEASE NOTE
I don't want any downloads to any wares (this is standard XDA rules) or links to apps In any form even google play store or amazon links too, the only exception to this is if you have a link for a guide on Xda forums to get the sideloaded app or accessories to work (not the download to any APK's!!!!).
I have noticed that you need to turn off usb debugging in the developer section otherwise the usb port will not function correctly on the AFTV2!!!!
Some apps also may need Root access, Google Apps (Gapps), Google Framework, Xposed & or Xposed modules to make them work & sometimes will require a reboot of the system, I will as & when add this information next to the apps when possible.

Thame at me.
Posted this same thing, but only for accessories in the fire TV general section last week...
My xbox360 wired works just fine, FYI. I play naught 2 regularly using it. Only issue I've noticed is that the top bumpers do not register (white light doesn't blink when pressed), there is no menu button, and my mouse cursor disappears when the controller is plugged in...

Is it plugged into a hub? Or straight into the usb port at the back?

plugged into the hub, I'll go put it in direct and see if it registers... I'll just edit this post afterwards
Sorry, life happens..
Works fine direct connect, no difference I could detect.
I was wrong about one thing though, the top bumpers light the white led, the bottom triggers do not. However, the d pad and sticks don't light the led, but both work for navigation, so maybe they work in a game that uses them.
I did notice depressing the sticks (either) does the same as the green button (ok/enter), had not noticed that before.

Guide to get the PS4 Controller working on the AFTV2
Ok so i saw this & copied the work around if you want to go to the original thread the link will be at the bottom of this page.
Here is what you have to do.
I had to pull out my windows install to run the SixAxisPairTool to get the PS4 controller to pair. There is a Mac version but no matter what I tried it kept saying there were no controllers on the USB bus.
In the ADB shell you need to pull the Bluetooth MAC address from your FireTV Stick using this command:
$ settings get secure bluetooth_address
Take that value and plug it in to the tool and then you will be paired.
To get the controller to work with the PS4 again is as simple as plugging it in via USB to the PS4.
It's not quick to swap back and forth as you need to rerun the pair tool to get the controller to work with the fire tv again.
The original thread is here (look at post 4 for the guide)-

Make sure you give him thanks on his thread if this works for you.
Added more apps & accessories to the list 7/1/16
If anyone has anymore please feel free to add them to our list
ePSXe works perfectly. The preferences page doesn't crash in the new version, so remapping the game controller is no problem without a mouse.
These 360 Controller knockoffs work perfectly with Fire TV and they're fairly priced at US 13.99 with free shipping! My pink one just arrived and I tested it with a round of Modern Combat 5

@tekno4ever thanks for the info with the vpn app, I added it to the list cheers.
I have a Logitech K700 and it works fine. Touchpad works too.
BT Sport App for Kindle Fire Stick
Hi, Would appreciate it if someone could post the current BT Sport App APK (v 2.11.0) for download via Windows PC. I can then sideload onto Fire stick using Adbfire. Thanks in advance
Fyi with @rbox twrp recovery and pre rooted img on aftv2, Google Chrome works (worked out of the box for me) with a mouse app such as Wukong as well as Play Store works if done correctly including downloading apps..
Also, Xposed works great on aftv2 as well now.. I feel your list needs to be udpated soon haha
Hey guys, just got my fire tv, 2nd Gen.
Finished installing it, and I had two games in the appstore: sonic 4 ep2, and minecraft pocket edition. Bought these years ago for the kids.
Anyway, I had an old generic ps3 controller that I connected to the fire tv, and I can confirm that it's working perfectly.
I looked it up on amazon, and it's this model, if anyone has it, give it a try:

Also, one side loaded game that did not work for me was Chaos Rings, the original one.

Is console mode can do the same thing like MOTOROLA "ready for" ?
Cause I check every review on youtube , the page of console mode only can show up games , no youtube or something else.
Thanks for the answer.
It is nowhere near as nice as Ready For.
I am trying to switch from a moto g 100 and while the screen is much nicer, the overall OS is much worse.
You are able to add streaming services to the console mode and watch things. I have tried on you tube and netflix.
Basically, the app will be a mirror of the phone display, you use the phone as a "mouse". When you select a video to play the display will switch to a fullscreen landscape.
Oh , ok , so I can either mirror my youtube via hdmi or WIFI ?
Also while playing the content of youtube , can the phone multitask or it can only operate as a "mouse" ?
Yes, you can turn off mouse mode and use the device.
I have only tried via cable, not casting.
The game mode would work really well for a basic desktop mode with phone mouse control if we could adjust the dpi independently from the phone. When in game mode everything is just too large. It does work, but there is so much potential for this to be great. If you change minimum width to 1000, the adjustment does not carry over to game mode.
After the recent OS update, it looks like they added new options for resolution and removing letterboxing, but they are grayed out.
Readyfor is good, but only one thing can be better - in game mode I can't navigate in OS with gamepad like at real console, may be there is something for that?
At their website they talked about some combinations, R1+L1+start (launch media center, but doesn't work for me). R1+L1+select (launch side menu) works ok, but it is not enough. I'd like to have classic android navigation mapped to gamepad keys, possible?
