Complete android newie, please be gentle - had my Desire less than a week.
Been trying to update my hosts file with a custom one.
Tried using some info I found on this site and couldn't get it to work.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=680579
Root Explorer also fails. Reports not enough space.
Device is rooted, running Oxygen custom rom.
Just wondering if updating it from an update.zip would work?
I am assuming the rooting worked fine - I was able to access the /system/etc folder and take a backup of my old hosts file, just doesn't want to play ball the other way around. Yes I did change from R/O to R/W.
Anyone got any other ideas - I see there are several posts saying they can't update theirs on the desire.
I take it you're rooted? Just get AdFree off the Market and use that, works fine

friend at work used that - said it wasnt on the market anymore?
I've had about 4 updates to my version since getting it, just search 'adfree' on the Market
Yes it's rooted.
Tried adfree but I read that the hosts file was very outdated and that a member on here has updated it. I have the updated hosts file, just can't replace the one on the device.
You don't need to, it uses the downloaded ones

I'm coming from a rooted port of Android for the Sprint Touch (Vogue) (Thanks DZO, Myn, and company!!!) and WOW EVO is amazing.
Anyways I have a few questions I need help with getting started I've been reading a lot but I'm still overwhelmed with the wealth of info:
#1. I updated the OTA - does this mean I can't root yet until the new OTA is rooted?
#2. I would like to go to a new rom without all the junk. I don't use sense, or any of that other fancy stuff running in the background. Is there a rom you would recommend?
#3. In the past, I had a rooted device where I could modify the androidinstall.tar and remove .apk's I didn't want. Is this possible with the current situation on EVO?
#4. With all these roms, do you generally clean wipe everything each time? or do settings / apps / configs remain?
Thanks!!!
I can try to answer your questions.
1. Unless something has come out recently off you are stock and did the update no way to root yet.
2. I just use stock ROM and remove what I don't use.
3. I personally use "root explorer" once you are root you can either unlock nand and use out to remove bloatware or you can adb and remove with your computer.
4. I'm not to sure about those commands, I haven't ever used those.
Look at the sticky in any forum and go to the ROM and Guide link and everything you need to know its there. Keep a close lookout I'm sure somebody will figure out how to root the update soon.

Yeah I love root explorer, that's how I used to change things on my old phone. I have it installed but I guess I just have to wait for them to root the update. Maybe I shouldn't have updated
Oh well, knowing XDA they will probably root it by the time I'm finished typing this post. I'll keep reading those stickies... thanks for the answer though!
No problem. Yeah, never install an update till the devs ok it. Good luck.

Crap one question I forgot - without being rooted - is there anyway I can do the wireless tethering besides the standard Sprint program?
There is a program on the market called easytether. One is the lite version, which is free. The full version is 10 bucks

I AM NOT RESPONDING TO THIS THREAD ANYMORE. IT'S OVER IN GENERAL NOW UNDER "HOW TO STOP VERIZON'S FUTURE OTA UPDATES"
I have an Incredible fully flashed to Cricket phone service and for some reason I still get Verizon's OTA updates. I don't want them updates coming to my phone and nagging me. Anyone know how to turn that off so I don't get any future updates?
Solved! Answer below.
To turn OFF future OTA updates, there is a file in the /system/etc/security folder. The file is named "otacerts.zip". Rename it "otacerts.zip.bak", or whatever you want. That will prevent future updates.
You can change that filename using ADB, the root explorer app, or a terminal emulator app of choice right on your DROID. I use root explorer because it is easy and fast. But that's just me...

Yeah I found that and used it with success but I think that just turns off the notification and makes your phone think that it's been updated. I'm looking for something that disables it completely so that I won't ever get the updates anymore. Thanks
Found the answer
Found the answer on CDMA GURUS! I'll paste it below.

This is thread is not about fixing the update you already have but have not installed, it's about not getting any future updates. If you already have already received the update but you have not ran the update then you need to do something different.
Here is your solution...
Open root explorer and go to system/build.prop, if you press-hold the build.prop in Root Explorer you can "Open in Text Editor". The only thing that needs changed is the six digit number: "FRF91/XXXXXX:user..." replace that six digit number with 264707, save and exit, reboot. My notification was still up after I rebooted, however after tapping on it and hitting back, I got it to go away.

I did the system/build.prop hack and it worked just fine.
I am not the person that posted that and I have no idea why it didn't work for you cause it works for everyone else. Sorry
for some reason when I go to update this file it comes back as the file is read only? I know I'm rooted because I can enable the wireless tethering. I have the vzn droid x, version 2.3.340 android 2.2.1

Touch the button that says "mount" on the top right and try it again.
Anyone following the RUU threads already knows about this and it's starting to get more attention now. The latest official build of Superuser does not work with newer Sense ROMs (such as Vision 1.72+, anything released recently). HTC has started utilizing a relatively new feature of sqlite; a journaling mode called WAL (write-ahead logging). It's actually smart. WAL journaling should improve sqlite throughput, which represents a large amount of Android's IO and benefits applications across the board. The downside is it broke Superuser because it's actually special in its' use of sqlite.
WAL journaling, as built with these new Sense ROMs, is using exclusive locking. Why is this important for Superuser? It's the one situation where you have an application running within Android's process space and one outside of it, both accessing the same sqlite database. When su runs, it opens the sqlite database to check whether you have allowed access for said command to run. If not, a call is made to the Android application, which fires up and prompts you for an answer. Problem is, su has the database open with an exclusive lock (i.e. nothing else can touch it), so Superuser (the Android app) fails to open the database and cannot run. It'll either force close or do nothing.
To fix this, I have modified Superuser and su. Both changes have been submitted to ChainsDD for review. You can look at his git repository's pull requests to see the changes I'm proposing. I'm basically changing the journal mode being used by su one that is non-exclusive and Superuser to close its' database when sitting idle. I couldn't change Superuser's journal mode no matter what I did; it seems to be set deeper in the stack than I can access.
Here are the links to my pull requests on Github if you want to review the code:
https://github.com/ChainsDD/android_packages_apps_Superuser/pull/14
https://github.com/ChainsDD/android_system_extras/pull/1
Anyway, the end result is I have a working Superuser. Here are the caveats:
This is not an official build, so it's signed with my key, not ChainsDD. He has merged my patches into his Github repository so they should be making their way into a release soon.
I've artificially incremented the version number to 9.9.9, to make sure if you install my version, it'll "win" over any other installed version. Also, this prevents the Market from nagging you for updates.
I don't recommend using this version unless you must. In other words, you are on one of the Sense ROMs which is broken. Use an official build otherwise.
If you ran the RUU and have trashed your custom recovery (Clockwork), this isn't going to help you root the device again. Superuser is a tool for managing root access, not obtaining it.
If you are running Virtuous, you DO NOT need this.
Download Patched Superuser Flashable Zip
great work rmk! but i still prefer to stick with your virtuous.
I'm trying to work around the no root available for 1.72 problem with my stock HTC Z rom updated to 1.72 OTA, but with Rage method temp-root I'm stuck with a frozen terminal after the 'Force Close' step, starting the terminal the 3rd time in the process. I've replaced the gfree_temp_root package's su file with the one provided here, used the APK provided here (pre-installed the apk too before the attempt). It's unfortunately stuck with a frozen black terminal window. Probably the Rage thingy doesn't work with the new 1.72 update, or am I using these files correctly at all?
(guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/wik...cess_.28Permanent_Root_.2F_.22Permaroot.22.29 )
ChainsDD merged my patches into his repositories today so they should make it into an official release soon.
Nice! Is ChainsDD going to be changing Journal Mode himself?
thanks for this, confirmed working on DHD.
Just for a correct understanding:
I need to have root like described here to use SU right?
Or is it now possible to get the new Update via OTA and get root with this method and its a solution for rooting 1.72?
Thanks!

There has been more than one report that rage doesn't work either, on the 1.72 ROMs.
Also, there's the issue of S-OFF that needs addressing, whether that can be re-done at 1.72.
I dont understand, or I miss some information. The 1,72 ROM is not patched yet (or what?).. Then. If I install 1,72 I will loose root. So in what cases I will need this patch?

don't forget to grant permissions to superuser itself

The one in your link is a dirty workaround for sure, it modifies baksmali code. Mine is working as intended. The wal and shm files are only present when you're actually sitting in the Superuser app. I'll modify the code some more to close the DB anytime it's not being read or written from. As it stands it's already rare to trigger a case where a request would fail.

Hi,
This patch works only on Desire Z or I can install in my Desire HD?
Regards,
I'm setting up a SPH-D710 for someone else and started looking around for information to root & install a custom recovery for this phone. On this phone I have the latest kies update for Android 4.1.2, OI23. I don't see any reference to this latest OI23 anywhere and I want to know the best method for rooting this device based on the current baseband version OI23. I would like to use TRWP as the custom recovery, but I'm not certain this is the best choice for this phone.
1. What is the best rooting method for the SPH-D710 4.1.2 OI23?
2. What is the best choice for the custom recovery for this device and Android version (4.1.2 OI23)?
I rooted just fine with Cydia Impactor... As far as the custom recovery.... I'm on stock and haven't tried any others with OI23 yet...
Any clue how to get rid of the SuperSU "su binary needs to be updated" notification after rooting OI23 with Cydia Impactor?

Had to use the "Full unroot - Cleanup for permanent unroot" option from the SuperSU left behind by Cydia first to remove the "bad" su binary, then the "Aragorn" option in Framaroot 1.9.3 did the job! I now appear to have a rooted OI23 without a weird warning message!
Thank you!

Google is your friend.
Kate6, You must not have completely read my post. I did use google and have been to that site also any many others that came up. Don't believe the first thing you find. Google may be your friend but what you may find there may not be. In today's internet you have to be careful. That is a site that has you complete advertising offers that never let you download or ask for lots of personal info you should never give out. I know this is an old thread and have moved on and found other ways around this problem. Thanks anyways.
Terribly sorry. My Epic 4G Touch has actually recently finally died... Won't power up at all anymore. So at this point I'm at a bit of a disadvantage to be helpful here. Best of luck though!
Hello everyone,
I just wanted to ask if it is possible to install an older version of a MIUI app such as the Music or Browser in particular. Some of the apps have become terrible after some recent updates and I'd much rather have an older but better functioning version.
I'm not an expert so I thought surely some of the members here can advise me.
Note: the device is not rooted
Many thanks,
Khaled

But how do you delete a system app or rename it?
Oddly enough I was trying to get an older version of the Browser app and kept trying to install many APKs I downloaded online, and all of them failed to install. But when I opened the browser again I found that it has rolled back to one of those previous versions.
without root, there is no way to do so.
However, if u can get the apk you need, use app clone to clone them with different name and install it.

As I said, manually delete & copy the app. Android wont allow downgrading app (nevertheless system apps) with standard instalation method. Root is needed, file explorer with proper root also needed (personal favorite is MiXPlorer)
