I dont have a rooted phone but currently I am also looking into this stuff because my Desire's space is getting low...
As I know you are not losing any data in the rooting process, only if you flash a custom rom afterwards you will of course lose your data. Nevertheless make a backup of your stuff before rooting. If I am wrong in this point please highlight because I am also planing to root my phone.
For a guide, look in the developers section, there are alot of good tuts.

Use the search feature homie, you don't loose data when rooting. I just rooted my desire 2 weeks ago using the unrEVOked method. It worked on the first try and was very simple.
UnrEVOked is the simpliest method, but if you want to free up more space in you phone you'll need a rom which supports a2sd or DATA2Whatever.

Hello XDA Community,
I am fairly new to the concept of rooting an android device and I have no idea where to start. I understand what rooting is and what it will allow me to do, but I just have no idea how to get started
I was looking around the forums and reading different topics on how to root the HTC Desire Z (or my G2 for short), but a lot of the topics take me to links to other topics, which have links to other topics which have a lot of technical things that are not friendly to a first time rooter (What is S-OFF/S-ON?? Why would I need to do that and how??).
I recently allowed my G2/HTC Desire Z to upgrade to the new Gingerbread 2.3.4, and to my understanding, there is no simple way to get this rooted. After reading the topics, I do see that there is a way around it, but I'm just at a loss as to where to start.
Is there anybody out there that is willing to help me out? If so, that would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

You should apply this guide for first: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178912
And then this one for rooting: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wik...sion#Rooting_the_Vision_.28G2.2FDZ.29_and_DHD
Also there will be some people to help you if you need here: http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=g2root
You my friend, are the man.
Thanks a bunch for this.
I read your thread, I also have the htc G2 (tmobile) and it is in stock gingerbread 2.3.4 not 2.3.3

The above linked method will work for you also. You'll have to downgrade first, then root, then flash a pre-rooted OTA build. That'll put you back to where you are now, but with root access.
I've just rooted HTC Desire Z - Android 2.3.3
1. You have to downgrade firmware 2.x to 1.3.4 ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905261)
2. And then following these instruction in ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Rooting_the_Vision_.28G2.2FDZ.29_and_DHD )
3. Done
have any of you guys tried the gingerbreak?
from what i read its able to root any gingerbread device.
i cant post links as this is my second post. but im sure if you google it, you should find it.
i read under the techofweb result.
not sure if it works, i never tried it. Rooting my HTC desire Z voids my warranty
but if you guys out there try it, let me know if its successful.
thanks in advance.

What we're actually doing now to root is this :
2.3.4, temp rooting 2.3.4, downgrade to OTA 2.1, root that, flash new ROM.
You forgot the last step *PROFIT!* lol all kidding aside for the one who asked the pre-rooted ota is in the development section. don't forget to flash recovery and get titanium backup and all that good stuff first...well second after temproot if you go that method. DO NOT USE VISIONARY!
Also remember to do a nandroid backup of your 2.1 ROM if for some reason you want to go back to stock, or sending your phone in for warranty.

Hello everyone, I am using HTC-Desire Z with the android version 2.3.3
I really want to upgrade my phone to ICS. In case of doing the root, i want to know that, if i root my phone will it downgrade first to the Froyo??? If it will then can i upgrade to the ICS using the custom ROM process???
If anyone knows or understands my problems please provide me a solution and that will be appreciated..
Thank You
Zawad
Yes search the threads and follow the wiki. The only safe way to root is to downgrade first using the method outlined in the wiki. The only way (for now and probably forever) to get ics on a desire z or g2 is to root

how is root desire z with android 2.3.3?
(with apk program is better because i am amature!)
there's plenty of tutorials over at the android developement section, and the wiki, for rooting your phone... and try to do it the hard way, even if you didn't understand what you are actually doing (like i was )
do it the hard way, because the easy way (a rooting app to easily one click root your phone) has a high risk of bricking your phone (you try to turn it on... nothing appears)...
your choice

because what one click root is a high risk?
Visionary has a high brick rate.
SuperOneClick may tell you its rooted, but it won't be.
Others won't work at all I think.
Just follow the wiki guide, its not too difficult and works.
-Nipqer
Wiki guide all the way. Make sure you follow every step. It works a charm. It was how I did mine
Hey, did you manage to root your Desire Z 2.3.3? I read thus and got quite scared: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1169538
I rooted my last HTC Magic with kind of one click method and it worked though.

Read up on ADB Shell and the works. Then you can read the numerous guides on how-to root.
The information you'll learn is invaluable.

I'm new too and I managed finally to downgrade, root and install custom root. I followed the first post here written by Kueber. Easy root soft is never good way to go. First learn some basics of ADB here and make sure you install oll the JDK, SDK and Desire Z drivers so you can control your phone from your computer. Then use this root and downgrade instructions. Then install from Market ROM Manager and download whatever ROM you wish and installing that is already very easy. The question is what ROM to use.
Of course don't forget to backup everything before you start messing with your phone.
I got Virtuous v2.0.0 (Android version 2.3.3 & HTC Sense 2.1) so I don't feel much upgrade at the moment except I'm rooted and can use some soft that works only with rooted phone (ClockSync & Screenshot).
If you find better one that suits for DesireZ and doesn't make it slow then let me know
Hey there. I am trying to root my Desire HD second week and still no progress. I dont know what shall I do to get it rooted, tried too many variants, none of all wprled (AAHK, z4root, visionary r14, SuperOneClick...) Please Help me , link any working tut or write step by step what shall I do. I really want to root my phone and I'm getting frustrated... Please guys.
Android version is 2.3.5
Htc sence 3.0
System Version 3.12.405.1
If I remember correctly, you must downgrade your phone first. Go take a look for a downgrade. You'll find guides here on XDA.
What shall I downgrade adroid version or system version? Is htc desire hd rootable with SuperOneClick ? Shall I unlock bootloader ? I am very noob at rooting phones. Please help me , I really want to root my phone!!!
You should use Advanced Ace Hack Kit AAHK. Used it for my DHD. It does everything on its own and in about 10-15 minutes you should be able to flash any ROM.

If it says that then you are not reading the manual. Please before you brick your phone for good. Spend the next 5 hours reading up on how to do it first and decide if you really need to. Rooting is not for everyone nor are custom roms. Mainly if you can't spend the time to read up on how to root. You will spend just as much time reading up on how to fix any bugs that may or may not pop up

It works and you really should read the effen manual. Somewhere at the bottom there will be Q&A and there you will find the code to start AAHK. From then on it's pretty self explanatory. Just read as much as you can.

HELP ME ASAP urgent
hey there,
ok I got my wildfire s luckily through a stupid replacement by HTC taking my wildfire and giving away wfs.
But now I am stuck with all rooting and s-off method. I have additional 6 months warranty and I dont want to ruin it by unlocking bootloader with HTCDEV. Even if I keep this out of my head that rooting is no harm, my earlier wildfire had some motherboard issues due to rooting and OC and somehow I managed to revert everything to stock and get it replaced.
So can anyone tell me a way to be rooted and S-off without HTCDEV being a part.
I tried Simonsimons utility kit but the download links are dead and also all other posts of rooting without voiding warranty have dead links(to what I know).
PLEASE HELP. I AM FED UP OF LOW INTERNAL SPACE.
thank you in advance.
just root it,6 months of warranty are useless anyway

Dont use tools do it manualy for starters. Folow the instruction on htc dev. Then flash custom recovery. Then flash "http://downloads.noshufou.netdna-cdn.com/superuser/Superuser-3.2-RC3-arm-signed.zip". And you are good to go
root wildfire s

If you have an European HTC Wildfire S the only sure way to have permanent root is :
a) you have to unlock the bootloader. No question about it.
and
b) you have to flash (manually) a permanent rooted ROM which is ALSO created from an original HTC WFS ROM

The reason to do it this way is because you are then able to use Link2SD. I have 30 apps installed on my Wildfire S this way and still have 123Mb of internal storge left. This is including al updated systemapps (youtube, maps, facebook etc).
Before, when I updated all systemapps I only had like 50Mb for user installed apps. I could not even install all the apps I regularly use. So I know how fed up you can be about the low internal storage.
Hey everybody,
I am here to ask the much dreaded question. How can I root my DHD? I don't really want to use AAHK and downgrade my firmware, I need a 2.3.5 root please. By the way I have woven through many forums, so none of those "search before you ask" posts. After all, forums are for asking questions. Many thanks

Forums are for asking new questions, but they are not for asking questions that have been asked and answered many times previously, like this one. With that said, I can believe that you have at least searched a bit and just not found what you're looking for, since the only other solution is significantly less popular (for good reason). So: you can use HTCDEV to unlock the bootloader. It give you fewer ROM options (you can only flash ROMs intended for your phone, not ported ROMs), and you need to flash the boot.img from your computer each time you flash a ROM. (Those restrictions are the reasons why HTCDEV is less popular than AAHK; I usually recommend AAHK.) Why don't you want to downgrade using AAHK?
first try this software http://www.unlockroot.com/ if it didnt work then use aahk

There is no way to gain S-OFF and root without downgrading. That is why the Hack Kit does that. SuperOneClick, unlockroot and other stuff wont work in your device.
The other choice is to unlock the bootloader as bananagranola said, but that wont give you total control of your device nor root.
What you can do, is after running the Hack Kit, flash a 2.3.5 custom rom that you like, but that is of course your call.
root for apps

Sadly, it will wipe your data during the downgrade process. There seems to be no way around it
But aahk is quite save and will tell you before it destroys any data.

Finaly a question that I need an answer to... Ok, I actually want to use the aahk, but my waranty is still valid so I wish to make a backup of my stock ROM so I could unROOT if something goes wrong in the future... Now, the aahk will downgrade my phone and thous not give me a chance to backup mu current ROM... Is there any way I could back it up somehow? I think that that is the way to go with the original question if you already want the stock ROM...
