[Q] Rooting 1.37 DHD - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've just upgraded to a HTC Desire HD (from a HTC Hero with FroydVillan). I've checked the Android Development forum and that talks about downgrading from 1.72/1.75 to 1.32.
My DHD (from 3 in the UK) is running software number 1.37.771.3.
I've decided to try out VISIONary, and have used the Temproot option (as it seems pretty safe to try out). I've done that and Superuser is in my apps list. However, I can't remove any pre-installed apps (like Amazon MP3 or the installed games you have to pay for).
Do I have to do anything else to uninstall these apps, or does this just mean that the temproot failed?
If it's the latter, then can I use the same method as downgrading from 1.72/1.75?
Thanks in advance.

From what I've been reading you need to be fully rooted eng s-off radio s-off and supercid which unlock your phone from 3 branding altogether and gives you full potential of your phone
You may need to create a goldcard to do it best bet to search forums for it
To remove the apps you will need root explorer to remove them from the system/apps folder but a better option would be to flash a new Rom with them removed already and been tweaked to give you improved battery life for example I'm running leedroid 1.4.1
E=Mc2

Thanks for the tips. I've successfully rooted my DHD and flashed Leedroid.

Hey, I am in the exact same position,
could you tell me how you rooted your DHD,
Did you have to do a downgrade?
A link to a guide would be very much appreciated,
(Btw I have temp rooted with Visionary +)
Thanks for any info

What's the easiest way to Root a Third Party, Froyo HTC Desire?

I've got an HTC Desire not bought through any mobile provider and now running Froyo (sent OTA) and am UK based, in case that makes any difference.
What's the easiest and safest method to do this? Is there something I can use which is basically a one button click? Without having to resort to partitioning SD Cards etc... I've got a recent "My Backup Pro" backup but am guessing Rooting doesn't wipe the phone or revert back to Android 2.1?
Please note I've never Rooted (or Installed a Custom ROM) on either Android (or WinMob) before. I'd like to do this, so I can install SetCPU and hopefully increase battery life. I do work in 2nd line IT Support though, so am technically minded.
Thanks.
Subscribe to this question. I am in the same situation (but not in the UK) and thinking about rooting but too scared to go through a seemingly complicated procedure. Under Android software section in this forum I found threads discussing applications that can root phones. I wonder if anyone tried them on Desire? Also, can I root but still keep with the stock ROM? I don't think I want to start experimenting and changing ROMs. Thanks for your help.
Nice and simple - use unrEVOked 3.21
***BUT***
Before you do this it's best to check what ROM you're currently running on at present. To find this go to:
Settings>About phone>Software information>Software version
Make a note of the number (e.g. 2.29.405.2) and then go here:
http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Bravo
If you can see a file matching your version number download it as it means should you ever need to return the handset under warranty you can reset it to factory.
If there ISN'T a file matching your serial number then you need to think hard if rooting is worth the risk as until a backup RUU file is available you'll never be able to go back to stock

I've finally got around to doing this, so I can use SetCPU and Autostarts. I'll report back if battery life increases.
It couldn't simpler btw. Thanks.
p.s - My software version is 2.29.405.5, which is listed in that link. Also thanks.
Download the RUU from here, it's a better link (less prone to failing):
http://www.multiupload.com/LEJCW182AH
Now I've run unrEVOked 3.32 on my Desire will I still be notified about OTA updates?
I know I probably don't need it but it's still good to know. Thanks.
Yes you will but do NOT accept them

Thanks. I presume because it will unroot my phone or could it now brick it?
If all it does is unroot the phone, can I not just root it again?

[Q] DHD rooted using Unrevoked3

I have rooted my DHD using unrevoked3. I have super user permissions app, and clockwork mod recovery. Then I read that you can't install a custom rom without S-OFF. Do I still need to do the Visionary+ w/DHD eng script?
I thought my DHD still had S-ON but now I don't think I could have clockwork without it being off.... I'm confused.
Anyways I did go ahead and attempt the Visionary+, but perm root doesn't seem to do anything. I could probably skip that step I guess. The DHD script complains about busybox not being installed which is probably done during the perm root of visionary. I then installed Titanium Backup and did the check errors function and installed busybox. It said it installed, but terminal emulator still complains about busybox.
Confused. Can anyone help me?

are you sure you have a DHD unrevoked is for the desire/evo/wildfire ect anyway however you rooted, you can use this tool to s-off

Thanks, I'll give it a try. =]

btw if you have rooted using unrevoked and have clockwork mod installed, you dont need to s-off to flash a rom, you already have write acess to the nand in recovery
How did you do that using unrevoked on DHD?
or you remove nandlock only with unrevoked and root with visonary ?
Something isn't right here. It isn't possible to root dhd with unrevoked

Someone Swyped my idea.
Further information on Unrevoked & DHD
I seem to be having the same problem as the OP.
A bit of background: I just upgraded from my HTC Hero, and had some experience of rooting and installing custom ROMS on that device. My first job when I got my new HTC Desire HD was to get it rooted so I could get all Orange's crap off of it and have a streamlined new phone.
However, in my haste, I used Unrevoked, failing to notice the difference between a bog-standard HTC Desire and the newer HTC Desire HD. The upshot: Unrevoked *did* succeed in rooting my phone and installing ClockworkMod Recovery, but now the recovery partition thinks it's an old-fashioned HTC Desire and so won't install DHD ROMS. I can install bog-standard Desire ROMS to my heart's content.
So, I'm in a bit of a mess. I want to install a DHD ROM on my DHD, but I can't. Also, now that I've already gone through one rooting process, the standard procedure doesn't work, so I'm at a bit of a loss as to how to proceed. Any advice would be appreciated. Should I:
- try to get the phone back to its unrooted condition as it was when it came out of the box (in which case how do I do that?)
- flash a different recovery partition in the hopes that I can get it to recognise that my phone's a DHD and not an old standard Desire?
- fiddle about with the ROMs to get them to bypass the device checks (in which case how do I do that?)
Any other suggestions, let me know. It's possible I may have stumbled on a new method for rooting a DHD...
To fix it, just flash 1.32.405.6 RUU.
But I have to say, that is not possible
Desire ROMs on DHD, without S-OFF, everything is just simply wrong. Are you even sure that you have a Desire HD? Please send me a picture of your Desire HD running some Desire ROM.
oops
OK, it appears that there's a much simpler solution. Orange appear to have sent me the wrong phone.
Sigh...
Hahhahhah, good job Orange
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
ok, so to Orange's credit, I've sent back the wrong phone, and they've sent me the right one, next day delivery, having knocked 40% off the original price. Looking forward to playing with it this evening - I won't be touching Unrevoked with a barge-pole!
thanks @jkoljo for alerting me to the possibility that I might have been sent the wrong thing!
we get there in the end...
Very nice, good luck with your new phone

Rooting as with most stuff carries risks, however google and download unrevoked which will root and turn of the security of the bootloader, (version 3.21 works if the newer version fails)
To undo root if somethings wrong flash an RUU, you will need to create a goldcard (tutorial on here, use goldcard helper on market. RUUs are available in the dev section)
When you flash the gingerbread rom via recovery (which is installed by unrevoked) it will wipe the phone, mem card and sim dont get touched
Hope this helps

Only for CDMA devices. GSM has to S-Off.
Will 3.21 work with 2.2 on USCC?
Try it. It should work since it can so CDMA devices. If it doesn't work, the program will tell you that it cannot continue.

[Q] Superuser force close after visionary root

Hello all you wonderful guys and girls,
I am a noob and have taken the plunge to root access. Sorry if this is a dumb question.
I have run visionary and temp root worked fine. I then performed perm root and all seemed well. Once rebooted superuser is not functional and returns a FC whenever any apps attempt to use it. Attempting to confirm su access in terminal emulator produces FC. Many apps including gmail also FC. In addition some apps completely disappeared eg ES File Manager/angry birds
I haven't been game to try anything else as I can't find this behaviour described anywhere else. The phone is still functional and it was always my intention to continue to flash to android revolution or similar.
Am I worried over nothing and should proceed with radio s-off? Or am I asking for more trouble by going further?

Software No. 1.32.861.5
Thanks in advance,
Indro9
Please help guys, I'm starting to worry a bit.
Have you tried to install su from market, does that work?
cheers
Ilan
Thanks for the reply marleyb,
There was some weird stuff going on, even the market crashed eventually.
Jkoljo suggested some thing obvious and simple and perform a factory reset. This has fixed the issue and on second attempt, visionary+ has worked and I have permroot! The first go around, visionary must have broken something in my system partition.
Cheers for your input,
Dave
hi Indro9,
I have a Desire HD on the Three network with the same firmware number as you 1.32.861.5
I'm a total noob to the whole ROM/Rooting scene as well and want to root my phone.
I've read many guides saying that if you're running firmware 1.72/1.75 you need to downgrade to 1.32.405.6 or lower but no mention is made anywhere of what you need to do if your running our firmware 1.32.861.5.
Did you downgrade your firwmare before you rooted your phone or was it ok to proceed with your firmware version?
Also which guide did u follow and do you have any words of advice seeing as we have the exact same phones? You help would be greatly appreciated mate.
Thanks

If you are on 1.32 you can straight run Visionary, temproot first, then permroot, then http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=855403 great tools by jkoljo, make sure you buy him a beer,

Hey vinpor,
As Marleyb says, visionary+ worked fine with that firmware version.
The guides I followed are as above plus also http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=964996 although without the eng s-off and radio flash.
As far as which ROM to use, Android revolution 4.0 beta 4 is what I have now and am very happy so far. I've already tried a few others and disappointingly cyanogenmod 7 breaks when I activate the wireless although its an experimental. Cyanogenmod 6 worked though was based on 2.2 so I was itching to try a newer ROM.
All in all the process was easy and the support here on xda was great. I got a bit nervous early on (rooting) but the flashing was simple and just as described.
Please give to the people who have worked this out for us and let me know if I can help any further.
Dave
Also, I just want to add that jkoljo's radio s-off program worked just fine on my mac using xp via parallels. Thanks again to jkoljo.
Dave
Thanks for the help guys. Just thought I should let you guys know the rooting process went well & I managed to get radio s-off as well as eng s-off. So far I've tried revolution hd & leedroid both seem much smoother than my stock Rom.

[Q] Root Desire HD OTA update gingerbread 2.3.3

hey guys.
did anybody know here how to make 2.3.3 ota update root, i have tried gingerbreak that doesnt working showing just black screen.
my phn is s-on, I do it coz it wont accepting OTA update.
is there any manual process to make it root via adb shell or something like that.?
i dont want to install custom roms i already checked so much of them but the are not fully bugs free and not fully google compatible as i want..
It is not possible. True, not all the ROMs work great, but some do. Try Android Revolution HD 5.1.6.
You have to downgrade first to get root, and then S-OFF if you want to flash custom ROMs.
You can also downgrade, root, get Radio S-OFF, unroot, get OTA again and use GingerBreak. Then you can have root in the latest HTC Gingerbread ROM.

OTA didn't came when radio is S-ON. thats y i did this..
Your phone is always S-ON when it is stock, so surely OTA will work then. And even when it is S-OFF, it does not matter if your /system partition is in stock condition (no root, no bloatware removed).
HTC have stopped Gingerbread OTA because of to many bug (To many have reported problem with SMS, WiFi a.l.). It will be released new version within few weeks when those thing is fixed. Ref HTC support
Thanks jkolko for the useful s-off & eng-off guides. Should anyone else find it an issue, note that if recovery cannot mount your sdcard, you should try another sdcard (found this elsewhere in the forums).
Hi, any app for downgrading? Honestly, not à "hero" when it comes to touching my phone, but would like root (at least to get rid of some stock apps).
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
To have root in 2.3 you need to use the downgrade guide to 1.32. Root and S-OFF and update to Gingerbread using 2.3 RUU. Then use Gingerbreak .apk to root. Now you have rooted S-OFFed Gingerbread 2.3

Updated to 2.3 from fully rooted 1.32 by RUU, installed AMT and now have su and full root Gingerbread AMT relay works, thanks to developer of script...
Hello Frendz,
The day before yesterday HTC sent an upgrade to the factory default OS (i.e. 2.2 froyo) on my DHD and I happily upgraded to 2.3 Gingerbread. Now, before updating I had permanent root access on my desire through Visionary but just after the update I realised I do not have root anymore. I would appreciate any comments and other experiences in this matter.
Also, during my own research I came across Gingerbreak which is probably the best around for rooting the 2.3 version but all I wanna ask is, if I still need to downgrade to gain root access or is it possible to directly use ginger break somehow? If I am not flashing another Rom, and all I want is Superuser rights.
As, I have never flashed any other find on to my DHD and I was using the stock interface since the start obviously with visionary root.
Also, whichever way I do it, I would loose all my contacts apps or we can avoid that. Can anybody please suggest any good (possibly free) backup app.
Tooo Long to read but any help and replies will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Anyone have any idea when Visionary or another One Click will work on a stock DHD running 2.3.3? I only want to root to get Set Cpu to improve my battery life.

Wow, that's a bold statement in tech lol
Any reason why this build will never be hacked when seemingly every other one is?
Not doubting yr word at all tho lol
Because it uses (as far as we know) pretty much flawless security measures that prevent us from doing much anything. Previously the devs found a way to go around the main security barrier after two months of trying, and now HTC blocked that security hole. As downgrading is possible, there are really not much interests to try and crack the new builds. Especially as it seems like a mission impossible.
....sigh.....
and since downgrading, gold cards etc etc is not my favorite, still waiting for a simple apk "for dummies", I guess I can forget to get to root mine.....
Those guides are really not so hard. Read them a couple of times, and if you still do not get it, ask your friend to do it. You can also join #AndroidRevolution IRC channel, somebody can hold your hand through the process. If I am logged in, make sure to send me a private message in IRC so I notice you.
thanks for the offer! will read again & probaply come back t you for help
Indian Desire HD
Apparently the Indian DHDs running 2.3.3 cannot be downgraded to root.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
You can install seraphic custom Rom if you like its just a stock Rom with stock kernel and root access. I love that Rom, closest to stock you can get on rooted DHDs IMO.
yes, it really sad that to say 2.37 OTA upgrade cannot be downgrade this time, I really want to downgrade or just root it :'(
nothing can do this time
