I need help getting clockwork recovery to work on my epic WITHOUT a computer. Don't tell me to install the drivers because I've tried that and it never works also plugged it into the back of the computer usb drives and it never works. I need to find a way for it to work so I can run the truely epic rom on my device. Is it possible to just rename the rom update.zip on the root of my sd card and flash the rom that way? And can I return to stock rom by doing the same method?

There is a program/app called z4root that I have read about. I'm not sure how the program works, but I think it may be what you are looking for.
I have rooted the phone with that. I'm trying to get the phone into clockwork recovery so I can flash roms
Try every USB port and try different USB cables.
It sounds silly (and it is) but it seems only certain combinations will work and its not always the default "back USB port and stock cable".
Also once your computer recognizes your phone is plugged in correctly, start odin BEFORE you plug your phone in. My odin doesn't recognize my phone if it's already plugged in.
Of course the easiest way is to just download rom manager from the market. You should be able to install from there. Unforuntely that may not work because i have had issues with that but its worth a try . If that doesnt work try clicking on this linkhttp://www.koushikdutta.com/2010/02/clockwork-recovery-image.html and downloading it for the epic 4g. Rename with astro to update.zip. This is temporary method and you will have to re update every time you want to use clockwork mod. I have never used this before, u may have signature issues. I hope one of these works
I've tried every usb port and every cable in my house and its not recognizing. I know I have the corect drivers...and I'm gonna stay away from odin I bricked my last epic with that.
Tried you method. Didn't work. Went into rom manager and went into clockwork recovery reboot and went to the standard epic 4g recovery screen.
There is only one way to get cwm on your phone and that's with a pc. There is no other alternatives sorry.
Fyi: there's a update zip for dk28 that can be flashed threw the stock recovery. I've noticed my phone connects easier with dk28 then it does with di18

With having the problems you seem to have and if you TRULY bricked your epic using odin (doubtful), then maybe this type of thing is not for you bud. Stick with stock.

I'm running SRF 1.1.0 with genocide kernel and whenever I connect my phone to my PC, the PC doesnt detect it but if I try with my sister's epic it works so I need to find a way to get complete stock through CWM (I have 3.0.2.5) without using a computer so I can take it to a sprint store can someone please help me either fix the USB or help me get to complete stock without a computer. Go to the development section and look for the rerfs rom. Download that it. It will flash a stick ec05 rom rfs with cwm 2.5.1.0. Then in the same thread is the stock recovery. Download that and then boot into the cwm 2.5.1.0 and flash the stick recovery. Now u are on stock ec05 with stock recovery. Hope I helped. That is your best bet since you can't use odin or heimdall

do you get a charge at all when you connect it? Have you reinstalled the drivers? Sometime a dif usb cord will work also.

Did you plug your phone into the same port that your sister's connected with? I found I had to reload the drivers for every USB port on my laptop to make Odin work for each, otherwise it only works for the first one I used.

I tried reloading the drivers and everything and I'm. Using a blackberry cable and I tried different computers but for some reason they still don't work so I'm going to take it to a sprint store because I think its a hardware problem not a software problem and thanks for all the support guys I really appreciate it. One more thing is when I plug in any cable into the wall charger it thinks its a computer and gives me the options for c,harging and mass storage and tethering which its not supposed to do unless its plugged in to a computer

I have one charger from an older phone that does that to my phone.
Go too a verizon store buy a usb cable for the droid x. Its an excelent cable . Thick and short. Mounts my phone every time no issues. I've tried like 10 cables. By far the best
I ended up downloading swiftp to connect to computer, was making me mad I couldn't solve it. Its nice and fast.
I'm Just going to do the rerfs rom and take it to a sprint store because I think it's a hardware issue because odin or the computer dont recognize my epic but they recognize my sister's

tried that and no luck before I took it to the sprint store they tried to ODIN back to stock but even their computer wouldn't recognize it so they just gave me a new one.
I'm looked everywhere but nothing. Please help if you can.
I was on BeastMOD2.5 then some things on the phone were not working (Tmobile S2) so I called in and they shipped me a replacement. I used this link (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1323878) to restore it back to stock and unroot the phone and it worked besides one problem, I still got the synergy kernel gray screen at bootup, so as of now, i'm at stock, unrooted just with that synergy kernel screen. I looked it up and found the ODIN stock way to get it back so I tried that way, but now everytime I hook the USB to my computer to try to ODIN it, it always says USB not recognized (I've tried searching for fixes: clean USB, reinstall drivers, reinstall Klies, other computers, other USB cord, other USB ports but nothing).

does it recognize it in adb if usb debugging is enabled?
Did you try pulling the battery for 30 seconds?

I've tried that and i've tried this on 4 PC's and my usual Mac that I use to transfer files but no luck.
I also tried the debugging mode but nothing as well. Ill try for a couple more days with random things but since the rom is stock and everything is basically like out the box status if I were to return it with the synergy kernel screen on bootup, what would tmobile say even though everything is stock even the kernel?
Hey Buddy, there had been a few of us that has had the same problem.
For some reason, after you restored your phone back to stock, you still have the Synergy Logo when turn on and you lose your USB drivers, somehow, I don't know why. I tried so many ways for my computer to locate my phone, but after so many hours of looking, I gave up. Sold my phone to my friend and got another one.
Lesson learn. Someone should look into a solution for this problem

This is good to know for anyone that is looking to restore phone back to stock.
So I'm guessing people should install stock kernel first via Odin and then flash stock rom/recovery.
Maybe this will take care of Synergy logo.
What steps did you take?

+1 From the posts Ive read the people that have had this issue have used the zedomax flash. Safest bet for anyone looking to go back to stock should stick with the odin method. I think there should be a warning in the index thread next to the [HOWTO] [ROM] How to Unroot SGH-T989 Painlessly link about the usb issue and also the kernel boot image even thou if people would just read the whole thread they would see that others have already reported the kernel image issue......
Returning the phone with that would land you an out if warranty fee

If you flash this stock kernel zip before you flash the easiest unroot method ever it will give you stock kernel and remove any custom kernel logo.

Is your recovery stock. ? If its not you can always put it your sd card and flash it that way.

I wanted to know if sprint will exchange my phone if its rooted with a custom rom (calkilum rom) i want to exchange it b/c my usb port is not working. my phone doesnt know when its connected to the computer. so just keeps on charging doesnt give me the opting to put it on usb mass storage..

You can always download a stock ROM directly on the phone... unless you need Odin to flash it, I guess.
Try to find a stock ROM and, as long as you can get into your recovery, you should be good to go.
Plug your phone in while on wifi and download ;P
That is a problem with the ROM. Go to settings, Wireless and Networks, and choose USB Utilities and Connect storage to PC.

Completely stock maybe not but you can put a stock repack on the microsd using a reader and then flash that so atleast the build looks right. The modem version may be of some concern as well if its not EK02 id look and see if you can cwm flash it?

When u say u were rooted did your phone turned on with u full yellow triangle with custom rom and recovery?? or did u use a jig???
Have you tried a different USB cable?
I had a problem like this on my old Samsung Captivate.. It ended up being the USB cable.
Also, does ODIN recognize your phone in Download mode (Vol. Down + Power)?
Lastly, try and mount USB storage from CWM recovery (Vol. UP + Power), and see if that works?
If not, try re-flashing the latest Rogue kernel through CWM and try mounting USB storage again.
I had no problems exchanging my rooted Evo with a custom boot screen at their repair center in Florida.
My issues were hardware related though, so that may make a difference.

I've tried flashing different boot imgs thinking maybe that was the problem. Any thoughts? Like I said, I still have recovery and can flash from it, it's just when I reboot it goes straight to recovery.

Restore a bml backup over an mtd rom? Looks like if you can't flash another rom and have it boot you're going to have to keep fidiling with odin or heimdall until one recognizes... things to try are..... 1. GET A GOOD CABLE! Blackberry cables imo are the best... 2. Uninstall all samsung drivers on your comp and reinstall them! 3. Keep trying different ports and different combinations of battery and sd card out while trying to odin!

I've never restored any backups. I'm wondering if my usb port isn't just effed...in recovery, I can't mount USB storage...
Currently trying a bunch of different roms.

If you can't mount usb storage it could be your port... but it could also be the drivers... try uninstalling them and reinstalling....
Not bricked if it has life, just sponged...may as well be a brick though eh? Try the drivers as Flast suggested.

You are forced into recovery by just turning on the device.
Neither Heimdall nor Odin recognize your device.
For issue #1: Why not take the SD card out, put what ever rom (use your current partition type: BML or MTD) on to the card and flash that in the recovery?
For issue #2: You have a few options here:
Firstly, I would be to make sure you have the drivers installed and working properly.

Try all USB ports that are directly connected to the motherboard. (No emulated/hub/front chassis ports.)
If still nothing, then try connecting your device to another computer to see if the USB port works properly. (It's always good to make sure the connectors are clean of debris.)
I understand I am not using "brick" in the traditional sense, but in the sense that I cannot do anything with it....

1 - I have tried a variety of ROMs/Kernels/etc and nothing will allow the phone to boot...just straight to recovery every time.
2 - As stated, I have tried many computers/cables/driver reinstalls/etc and nothing is finding the phone. I have done ODIN on this phone before, and had no issues.
As this point (and I don't actually use the phone, was just going to get it running again) I have to assume the USB connector on the phone is effed...
Just to make sure...when trying to odin, you are going into download mode(hold 1+power) correct?

Are you booting into CWM recovery or stock phone recovery? If cwm have you tried a live ROM like this sucker http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1464791 Not sure if it would help in your situation, Years of old linux experience... Android confuses the hell out of me.
Just posted in another thread that I have a similar issue. My phone will boot all the way up, but I cant get any computer to recognize it. I have tried multiple cables/port/computer combinations, as well as uninstalling the drivers.
Oddly, my phone is full functional and boots fine, but when it goes to sleep, it never wakes up and I have to pull the battery. In the past when this has happened, my solution has been to Odin back to stock, but I can't even do that now...
So i was trying to find some new roms for my SGH-i747M and what i did was backed up my original rom running on a avatar nightly build i tried to upgrade my clockworkmod touch to the latest version using the terminal method (cause i was getting status 7 errors from all the other roms). I finally got the install the work then when i reboot the rom doesn't work i tried going back into CMW recovery and it just crashes and for some reason the computer can't recognize the phone so i can't unbrick it.... what do i do now totally scrub

Hey try downloading the stock firmware and used Odin flash it on
What stock ROM was on your phone before you update CWM? It's important to let us know so we can help guide you in the right direction.
Can you get into download mode at all? Have you tried the debrick method described in this forum?

I've tried odin and stock rom but the thing is i don't think my usb debugging is on so odin and my computer can't access the components inside the phone, i've tried unistalling drivers and trying to reconnect it but no luck... my stock rom on my phone was a avatar 4.0 nightly build or something (4.3 version) and my old CMW was 6.0.3( or something before i tried to get the 6.0.4) now i can't even get it to work when i tried to flash the slimkat rom
i can't get into CMW recovery.... when i try it restarts, when it restarts all i get is a black screen i think i'm screwed here
Try different drivers, cables and usb ports. Usb debugging only matters when you are booted into android. Shouldn't have any effect on download mode.

Can you get into download? From what I recall with my phone USB debugging was not needed to flash ROMs via Odin or CWM.

i've tried different port different cables different computers i've tried reinstalling the drivers and using different installations nothing seems to be making the phone readable, and yes i can get into download mode but odin or the computer can't detect which port it is on
How are you reinstalling drivers? You have to uninstall through device manager. And make sure your cables are data cables. Many out there are not capable of data transfers. Unless the port on the device has gone bad or been damaged, I'm not sure what else you can try. But if it cannot connect on any port on any computer, I think it may be a hardware issue like I just mentioned.
Did you try different driver versions? You can get several from the link in my sig.
What about trying different operating systems (i.e. WinXP, Win7, OSX, etc.)?
Could be worth a shot. Odin is Windows only though. I think heimdall works for the rest.

i've tried switching between the two operating system(windows 7(labtop), windows 8.1(desktop)) don't seem to be working neither have worked i tried installing the driver again on windows but the phone still can't read if anything imma try this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2549068 but idk what the results will yield w/e take what i can get btw idk where the samsung driver would be in device manager at least the general heading if it doesn't show up at all...

never mind guys it was the usb cable it's weird its the stock cable that came with the s3 and it didn't work it was only after i used my bros s4 mini cable that it started to read it wtf...
Cables go bad far more easily and frequently than most people believe. Glad you figured it out!
