Otterbox Defender v. Seidio Rugged

Picking up my Evo tomorrow just wondering what you guys think is the best case to get. I'm a mechanic so its gonna be abused.

I would go with the seidio if i had to pick between the two. I am a welder and the otterbox has absolutely no protection for the speaker or camera. I ordered the trident witch has screens to protect both the camera and the speaker...... I am on my 3rd speaker on my phone, it was poorly protected from the factory and collects anything magnetic really well. It also has more then a peel and stick protection for the screen.

Nice thread to start. I have been wondering the same thing myself. From what I've read, it seems like the soft plastic on the Otterbox is thinner than it used to be. It's similar to the Seidio in that their port covers are now prone to being easily ripped off. The older Otterbox covers seemed to rip off less frequently.
I hate my Seidio Rugged. It's falling apart. I've ordered a Cyclops and will probably try out the Ballistic when it's released.
The Ballistic seems like it will be the toughest case made for Evo, especially since the Kraken will probably not be made.

I have both and prefer the otterbox much more.

i just made this decision myself. Was deciding between the Otterbox Defender, Seidio Innocase Rugged with Holster, and the Ballistic HC (which should be released any day now). After much research and review, I decided on the Seidio, but actually going with the Best Buy version which is called the Platinum brand and its the Defense model. Same thing, but I can buy it tommorow and put it on my phone instead of ordering and having to wait. Plus, if something goes wrong, I can go back in the store and exchange it instead of having to ship it back.

The kickstand on the Defender is defective. Had mine for 3 days before it spontaneously crumbled. This is know issue and big problem.

My kickstand is just fine.

The kickstand on my Defender broke somehow while the case was in my pocket,hadn't even used it. The holster was an extremely sloppy fit,had to glue some felt pads in it so the phone wouldn't rattle around. Pulled the screen protector off as I was getting the oil spill effect on the screen. I guess you can fix that with baby powder but I don't need two protectors on the phone. After all this plus the 9 day debacle/wait to get the case shipped to me Otterbox waived all charges and freebied me the case. I'd have been POed to have paid more than $10-12 for it.
The Rugged case is ugly compared to the Defender but I think it offers more protection and the holster is much higher quality. The Exoskeleton at least on the earlier versions is the weak point as the corners break off. Seido's CS did approve my replacement request and shipped me a new case within 48 hrs and the skeleton is a slightly different design so I'll see if it holds up better.
I'm looking forward to the Ballistic case.

I also really like the Ballistic, and that was my first choice. I just dont like the way that the back of it looks in the new pics of it since its redesign...looked much better before...that and it IS gonna be big. It being so big didnt bother me at first, but now I'm rethinking it

Phone fits snug in mine, no slack at all. There are a few others with broken kickstands and others that are rough on them have no problem. I dont know what the issue is I dont believe they have any other revisions of the case out yet but if my kickstand does break you can bet your ass Im will be on the horn complaining about it, Not only did we have to wait more than a half of a year but as soon as it comes out there are a bunch of people having issues with it. I haven't had any issue and I got mine for free but this is suppose to be their toughest case that stands up to everything but water and people are reporting it doesnt even hold up to a pocket? Kinda crazy if you ask me but then again I am loving mine so far.

I went with Seidio, didn't know it came with the Innocase Surface too. That was a bonus, really liked my Surface on my Hero. Seems pretty durable I've pulled the case off my phone numerous times and no broken tabs. I really like the fact that the camera is completely covered. My only problem is the screen cover it came with has really bad glare, but that's not a big deal. All in all really pleased so far, I would definitely recommend it.

No glare on my otterbox screen (I did have to remove ther ZAGG protector) and the camera and led's are covered as well.

My Defender kinda sucked due to the faulty kickstand. I bought an Impact for $15 after discounts and I love it.
P.S. Otterbox promised me they would credit my card back within 2 days for the Defender. It has been a week and no credit so now I have to waste another half hour on hold to call and ***** about it. Pisses me off.

Features, quality?

Looks good (judging based off of the Innocase for the Nexus One).
How might this case be better than say a TPU/Epik style case? Just curious.

These are the only cases I know of that you can also use with a holster.when I had it for my nexus there was also a option to upgrade to "rugged"which was perfect for me because I was doing construction.

I second that! I usually use a holster with my phone and this case looks sweet. Otterbox won't be coming out with a defender case for our phone so I think this is perfect! I'm gonna us this for the daily and the TPU case when I need to go light

Nice. This is the kind of case I was looking for. It reminds me a bit of the Agent 18 cases for the iPhone (but slightly higher quality, it looks like).
Has anyone used these cases before on other phones? It looks like it has some rubberized material on the outside? Does it attract lint and dust? The official Gel case (which has now become slightly stretched and useless) continues to pick up every annoying piece of debris. I've given up and gone bare until something better (like this case) comes along.

Do a search for "innocase surface" on YouTube and you'll see a lot of reviews. They describe a slightly rubberized feel to the case, but apparently it isn't tacky and doesn't attract dust or lint.

Yes it is 2 pieces and it slides together. Its had that nice slightly rubberized feel to it but not too muck to their point it grips too much

I'm a big fan of the Seidio holsters. I've had one for my last few Blackberries. I tried several different holsters but I was traveling a lot and working in ceilings and not one of them lasted more than a month. The clip would inevitably break off. It happened once and I didn't notice until later. I had to spend over an hour looking for my phone that was on vibrate!
I chose the Seidio because it looked rugged. It never failed no matter how much I abused it. Now that I have an MT4G I'm really looking forward to getting one of their holsters for it. I've never used the Innocase, but I hightly recommend the holster. It's built very tough without looking like it. I don't see they have one listed yet for use without the case, but I'm hoping they'll make one.

Really, I bought a Otterbox Commuter for my Captivate and hated it and returned it the next day. The hard plastic looked cheap and the rubber was a lint magnet. I don't have experience with Seido cases but I bought a holster for my wife's iPhone4 and it's great.

Had an Innocase on my BB 8900 and It was good for the most part. It was one of the slide up ones. But It DID scratch the chrome part on the phone.
I did drop it multiple times on the floor and nothing happened the phone. BUT, one day it dropped about 3 feet down to concrete and the case cracked and wouldn't hold the phone well like it did before.
IT did fall on concrete almost that high before and nothing until that one day.
Also sliding the case off a couple of times messed up its sturdiness. Sturdiness as in, when I'd slide it up it stay on. after a while it wouldn't stay on well.
On my N1 I bought an Otterbox case and it was the best case I had. Even though it attracted lint and was hard to take off sometimes, I wouldn't buy any other case !
EDIT: got a battery from them for my N1. The thickness made me get rid of it. Come to find out the stock battery lasted way longer.

I thought the Innocase II is the one that was 2 pcs and snaps together.

Case contemplation

I have had my thunderbolt for about a month now and it is naked. I dont know if i should wait for an otterbox or a ballistic case or just buy something like the active x

as long as you're careful, I say leave it naked!

My recommendation is, if you don't know what you want, then go cheap for now until you do know. The S-Line can be had for just a few bucks ($3-7) on eBay (and some other web-based stores sell it too, I believe) and is an good case. Not amazing, but good to excellent. It will last you until you know what you want, and may be what you want.

I just got my active x case today in the mail. I was tired of waiting for Otterbox to release its case. I'm extremely happy with the case.

i went cheap, cases aren't the quality i like and well... they suck.
i like my case-mate pop case, shinny back gets stratched but i can live with it. the rubber deteriorating that users complained about is more like tiny eraser shavings on mine from the friction going in and out of my pocket, but it comes and goes. i'm still closely examining it. its a GREAT case, kind of thick, but lots of protection.
i might get the case-mate barely there case since i'm very careful with my phone.
another suggestion is the HTC (OEM) TPU case, I like QUALITY TPU cases because they're thin and the material is great.

+1 for the case mate pop, got mine 20% off (use google to search for coupons, 2 minutes saved me $8 lol), standard shipping, case ordered friday morning and delivered via first class mail monday afternoon. I like the fit, I like the protection, and I honestly think the white case is bad ass (makes my phone look like a storm trooper IMO). Otterbox has no plans of releasing a commuter case based on my communications with them and the defender is just overkill for my needs.

wouldnt waste my money on the pop case. im on my second one and it already jacked up.

99% of the people Ive seen have problems with them. I wouldnt take my chances.

On Ebay I found an Otterbox knock off for thirteen dollars with no shipping cost. Had the built in screen protector and all which I promptly removed because it sucked. Came with a hard snap on shell and a rubber case to put around that. It doesn't look to bad at all and was a lot cheaper than Otterbox.

+1 for the case mate. I got mine in white. BTW I contacted case mate about the rubber wearing out. (i take my phone out of the case a lot to swap out batteries) and they sent me another case for free and let me keep my old one. 2 for 1 bonus!

The Seidio Surface case fits very well, doesn't add much bulk to the phone, and probably comes in any color you're likely to want. Seem to be available at a variety of prices, so pretty good deals to be had.

+1. Doesn't add too much bulk like the OB defender, and still feels good in the hands. No problems with cracking after a drop nor with rubber deterioration.

After purchasing a soft case at the Verizon store where I bought my TB, I chucked it a few days later after it fell off a bunch of times. I ended up buying the Seidio Innocase II Surface Case on ebay. Best case imho.
It fits well and seems pretty sturdy. I know it's a pricey case, but I'm looking at the long-term in not having to buy a bunch of "cheaper" cases down the road when one will suffice.

The active-x from seidio worked for me. I've dropped it from about 3-4 feet with no ill effects. Doesn't add to much bulk, but is a little pricier than some cases. Use disc2011 for 10% off.

Best EVO case?

I definitely need some recommendations on cases. I currently have a Sedio Innocase Active (blue). Its definitely taken a beating. And the soft (inner part of the case gets annoying, and is definitely showing some wear. What cases do you guys have on your phones? I need a new case ASAP! I dont really have much of a preference. Just as long as its durable, and looks good!!!

Im in love with my Ballistics case. Don't have to worry about dropping your baby, its protected VERY well. Seems a little bulky at first, but still fits in ur pocket nd youll get used to it.

If you want SERIOUS protection, the Ballistic HC is the only way to go. I ordered mine the day they released them and haven't even thought about using anything else since. Some people don't like how bulky it is, but nothing else even comes close to the level of protection you get with the Ballistic.

i started having issues with my ballistic case a few months ago. The rubber border next to the power button became detached, and I received a replacement for the front that was a little different in design. The rubber on it started peeling as well and the proximity sensor doesn't pick up, so it is impossible for my screen to turn on while in a call (hitting the power button in a call doesn't work either)
I'm looking into an alternative, and possibly one to hold an extended battery case as well.

I use the Otter commuter case, modified to fit with my extended battery. Dropped it pretty hard twice on concrete, phone came out just fine. Only issue I have with the case is the cover for the HDMI and Micro usb ports. Doesn't stay closed.

I know you didn't ask about an extended battery, but I'm just going to put in my .02c for the trident case with the extended 2000MaH battery:

It has exchangable rubber bumpers that you can purchase separately, AND it has a built in screen protector. i've had mine for months now, dropped the device 2x and absolutely NO damage.
Wonderful case for the price and an extended battery that really didn't add that much thickness.

Otterbox Commuter = Awesome
I HIGHLY recommend the Otterbox Commuter series case. I've had it for almost a year now, and it is amazing. I've been pretty rough with my phone, but it has saved it from any sort of damage. It provides fantastic protection and feels solid and strong in my hands, but at the same time it doesn't make the phone seem bulky and has a great very smooth, sleek, thin feel to it. Definitely the best of both worlds in terms of balancing strong protection with sleek good looks.
Another thing I love about Otterbox is their amazing customer service and 1-year no-questions-asked warranty guarantee. I recently broke the case itself somehow (the phone stayed completely protected though) so I emailed their warranty services and told them, and they simply asked for my shipping address and sent me a new case in under a week! They didn't even ask for a copy of the receipt or pictures of the broken case. It was the fastest, easiest warranty claim I've ever had.
If you do go for an Otterbox, definitely buy it off eBay and not retail. You'll save yourself a good $20-25. It's about $12 new on eBay. I'd post a link, but I'm still a noob

Otterbox is definitely the way to go. I am unaware of what solutions they have available for extended batteries but it may be worth while to look into.

I too have to throw in a full reccomendation for the Otterbox Commuter.
Fits like a glove, and keeps the phone stylishly protected. It looks great, and has saved my phone from 4 drops I've made (one which I thought the case couldn't have saved it from, but nevertheless it did.)

I like the silicone ones. easy to deal with.

I have to agree with him. Also check out Incipio feather case. Best as far as having a slim phone with some protection.

Otterbox commuter is inmho the best if your hard on your phones, or you want extra protection.
But I switched to the casemate barely there about 4 months ago and its hands down, my favorite case. Ive dropped my evo a ton of times, and.its still doing just fine...

If you go for the Commuter (which I highly recommend; it offers great protection, but has great style, feels good in my hand, and doesn't add significant bulk), you should get it here on eBay. Save yourself $25.

I had the otterbox impact case. It is way too loose, doesnt fit snug on the phone. Over time gets even bigger almost a quarter inch too long vertically than the phone. Dissapointing.

If you really want protection I recomend the ballistic case. It's rugged and very durable. I got mine on Amazon for about 30 bucks after shipping

Oh wow that's like putting your phone in a bullet proof box inside a bomb cover lol I will look into one of those after my paycheck..

Siedio Active case

Hey guys i just got this case in the mail today. Its called the Seidio Active, it is half silicon and half hard plastic the hard plastic has a nice rubberized grip to it. It feels like a nice strong case, but i haven't gotten to test it out yet,and dont plan on anytime soon! Its doesn't make the phone too bulky it says its only 2.2mm thick with the case on.

seems like it's a good case and does provide some protection against drops. Might get it if I can't find a cheaper case like this.

I use this case and its excellent ibe dropped my phone a couple of times and its done well I just wish it was available in different colors and I got it for around 15$ on amazon however I don't know if its still on sale for that price

Just got mine yesterday, Amazon 20 bucks shipped, they do sell this in other colors, blue/red i know ive seen on there. Great case doesnt add alot to the phone, quality stuff.

I got my Seidio Active yesterday and love the case. It's light but still tough enough to protect the phone in case of a drop. It raises the camera and screen off whatever surface you lay it on and also covers volume/power buttons. Would highly recommend!

+1; I owned an HTC Inspire 4G before I left AT&T for Sprint, and I had a Casemate Tough Case on that, which I loved. Since Casemate didn't make that case for the Nexus S 4G, I settled on the Seidio, and fell in love with it. Now I have one on my Epic 4G Touch, and I couldn't be happier. I was worried about my phone not fitting in the universal adjustable dash mount I have, but it fits even with the case.

This case also comes with the holster option, right? If so, does anyone have the holster? I ordered the device and have been lookimg for a case to purchase.

I ordered Mine after I ordered My E4GT, Got My case in the mail 2 days after I got the phone, Love how it Protects my phone and actually doesn't add too much bulk plus it adds grip so the phones not slipping every which way. It was either this or the Surface, which I have had a bad experience with when I had my EVO 4G, lets just say I'm glad that the silicon won't scratch the phones case unlike the hard shell of the surface.

I've always loved Seidio's stuff! I got an Active case and holster for my dad for an HTC that he's got, and finally tracked down one on eBay for $30 (used/unused - accidental purchase by original owner) for my Sammy. Just got it today, and while it seems like the rubber part might attract a little lint, I think I'm going to be very happy with my purchase.

Yeah at first the case does collect a bit of dust but in like 2 weeks it will stop being like that mine only collects bits of dust under the hard plastic part now and not on the silicon you can see
