What are some must have apps - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just wanted to kno if im missin out on some good apps.

Battery Monitor Widget (free)= gives you up to the minute updates on how much power your phone is using (or getting, if you're charging). The widget tells you your battery life and clicking on it gives you several options on viewing exactly how fast your battery is draining.
Subsonic (one time donation of ~$10) = my favorite app ever, it sets up your computer as a server your phone can access so that you can play EVERY song you own without having to load it to your phone. I sold my iPod after getting this because, hey, I don't need it anymore. My 32GB iPod Touch is nothing compared to streaming all 300+GB of music I own. Audio Galaxy has a free version but if you haven't been keeping up with your id3 tags, you're screwed.
If you don't like the sense news widget you can get feedr. Not sure how much it costs though, it's a nice alternative and works very well. They do basically the same thing except feedr gives you more options and it's easier to find the rss feeds you want to subscribe to.
Other than that, I just use sense widgets. Hope this helps.

Yea thanks alot im a look into the subsonic app it sounds pretty interesting
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

Not all of these are FREE, but look into them anyways.
Customization
Launcher Pro/ADW Launcher - These replace your launcher, or homescreen. They allow you to change a lot of the way the phone looks.
Widget Locker - This replaces your lockscreen, allowing you to change that like a homescreen. You can use custom unlock bars and even add widgets to your lockscreen.
Widgets
SwitchPro - This is my most used widget, its a transparent bar that allows you to turn on/off system settings. I use it for my 3G/4G Radios, Wifi, Bluetooth, and a quick button to turn my phone on vibrate and mute my media.
System Info Widget - If you look at screen-shots around here, you'll run into this widget. It monitors your Battery, Temperature, RAM, Disk Space, and free space on your SD card. Its a handy tool to check how much space you really have.
SMS Unread - This gives you an icon for Email, Messages and Phone that has a little bubble to show if you have new Email/Text/Calls. I keep it on my lockscreen, since my notification bar is hidden.
Applications
APK Installer - Install APK's downloaded from the internet. As you spend more time on XDA you'll find a ton of custom APK's, free programs, and beta releases.
Titanium Backup - This is the MUST have APP if your going to be trying new ROMS, it backs up your apps and data so you don't have to go through the tedious task of reinstalling them all.
AdFree - Removes Ad's from your phone. First thing I install personally.
Lookout - Mobile security, find your phone if lost through GPS, Wipe your phone remotely, backup all your data, and scans for malicious APK's.
Apps are a funny thing though, It's half about functionality, and half about what suits you personally. So I'd recommend you dig into the market and check out XDA to find the apps that you can't live without.

Thx for the subsonic..... trying it out shortly
Sent from my HTC Evo

Check the link in my sig, it has a big list of apps that I use.
I haven't used it in a while but I preferred Mecanto over Subsonic because it is free and actually loads your music onto their servers so you dont have to leave your computer on to listen to your tunes.

MIQLive - Cloud management app (http://miqlive.com/tour)
Dropbox - Cloud Storage
Handcent SMS - A great SMS application

I used Subsonic for sometime the only that really got to me was the fact that you had to keep your computer on all the time if you wanted access to your music library.
I recently discover Mecanto, it's free and it stores all of your music on their servers, meaning you can pull it up anytime anywhere without your computer having to be on. It's truly amazing! Many people havent heard about it but they are doing a great job. I'm not sure how long it is going to last free, so if I were you I would get it ASAP. It doesnt have all the tweaks as subsonic but the music is streamed in CD quality and it's fine.
As far as other must have apps...
Handscent
Wireless Tether
Pulse - Amazing news reader and very easily customizable
AdFree - blocks ads...lots of debate about this one...
Dolphin Browser
Dropbox - Probably the God of all other apps
Epistle - Takes notes on your phones and automatically syncs with your dropbox! I use this all the time!
Folder Organizer - If you use folders this is the app to have!
Sportacular - to keep up with sports, sends you realtime updates
Music Junk - stream and download music for free!
TV Show Stream - Watch tv shows free on your phone
Where's My Droid - God this comes in handy all the time
Zedge - download millions of ringtones and wallpapers
Wordfeud - it's scrabble, play with friends or

The best app in my opinion that streams music from your pc is audiogalaxy alot better then subsonic and its free.

Yes but audiogalaxy has a 3GB limit. Oh and your computer needs to be on as well.

Pandora - For the music I don't own.
Root Explorer - Best file manager out there.
Barcode Scanner/Shopper/Shop Savvy - Really pisses off retail workers.

I expect so, but its good for showing off for the first few weeks!
It really depends on what you do with your phone, but here are my TOP 5 (in no particular order):
* DoggCatcher
* Twidroid
* Fring / Nimbuzz
* Quick Settings
* Timeriffic
If HTC sync doesn't end up handling the calendar and tasks (many of us business users don't want to use google calendar sync and NEED tasks) then G-Sync It or another solution for OTA calendar and task sync with exchange
Quick Settings might be nice (I have it on my HTC-Kaiser-Android), but

Car Locator can save and remember where you parked your car and will point you in the right direction if you ever need help finding it. The app uses GPS and compass which must be enabled for tracking down the vehicle and has several view modes like radar, map, and split. And those articles link on to others - does it ever end?! The second on the list is sub-divided nicely, and the third has user ratings which help.
I sometimes wish it was a lot simpler... Like for the current Windows Phone 7 applist, which is about 10 or so IIRC...
What about a sticky list of the 'Top Ten Essential Apps'? Like the one that properly kills the different battery-sapping services that chug away in the background if you let them.
Haven't got my Desire yet - should be here on Tuesday (apparently next week, but I'm still not holding my breath). Have just had my Vario IV (Raphael) returned from service a whole lot healthier, but I'm looking forward to shifting onto Android - last non-WM phone I had was 5 years ago and I've had to have phones that would sync to Exchange Server since then.

[Q] old mom got a droid

so im a winmo expert and wont be switching to android til my hd2 dies.
but since my mom and sis are on vzw i told them to get the incredible since they were bugging for smartphones.
i already got them setup in terms of using sense and setting up accounts, got them advanced task killer and all that
any recommendation for good apps for basic use, not power users obviously.
then in terms of music is it as simple as drag and drop to the sd like with winmo?
and how about data tethering do i have to root the phone for her or is there a simple hack or app to do it for free instead of paying vzw
thanks guys

Just a short list of the easy-to-use apps I've really liked so far...
Where's My Droid, fun little app that, at its most basic, will allow you to txt your "lost" phone to turn up the vol to max so you can find it... this seems to happen to me a lot so it is invaluable to me.
Mobisle Notes, simple notes app... lets you make multiple lists, groceries, feelance, what have you... easy to use.
Google Sky Map, self explanatory, amazes my 'rents
Gesture Search, set it up on long-hold of search soft key and draw letters on screen for speedy searching of pics, apps, files, people, etc.
Good Morning, interesting alarm app that will wake you with a custom message, the weather, your choice of song
Some fun and easy to understand games:
Coloroid
Grid Droid
Alchemy
Bonsai Blast
Doodle Jump

PdaNet works fine for tethering.
Sent from my FroyoEris using XDA App
For tethering I'd recommend EasyTether from the Market. Cheaper than PDAnet and faster to boot. Just don't try playing WoW or Starcraft 2 on it.
Also, task killers kill batteries because of the way Android operates. Android is very efficient at managing resources. Heck, Froyo (the new version of the OS that is rolling out) disables 3rd party task killers.
If battery life is a concern, look into UltimateJuice or Sedio's 1700mah battery. I'm a moderate to heavy user and the combo of those two gets me through the day on a single charge.
Also, they might like the program Foxy Ring. It auto adjusts ringer volume based on ambient noise and a toggle for a "timed" silence mode.
Hope that helps!
apps on the market get around having to pay for vzw's fees for tethering? surprised thats allowed
had no idea task managers did that, so even if 10 things are running in the back they really aren't using power like on winmo?

As long as you're not using exorbitant amounts of data, it doesn't phase VZW or even come to their attention. So Facebooking and light to moderate YouTube streaming is peachy-keen.
Processes are kept in the background to launch faster and provide better QoS. Unless they are set to sync with the cloud on an interval, they actually aren't doing anything in the background. That's where UltimateJuice comes in with regulating sync and when the APN is on.
Now, if you have programs that came with the phone which you never use, but insist on loading into the background at boot, you can use a Startup Cleaner to nix those, but allow them to be reloaded if they actually are used.
Cheers!

Funny to see a list of apps that most of which I've never heard of. Other than Google Sky map and Doodle Jump. Shows the market is getting more diverse.
Just thought of a couple of apps they might like.
Movies: find movie theatre times, reviews, trailers, and manage Netflix queue.
eBuddy: universal chat client for MSN, aim, Facebook, etc.
Mood Agent: quick temp playlist generator based on mood or song.

What apps do you like and why?

I thought we'd get a thread going on cool / helpful apps available in the market or web.
Lets try to avoid only putting the name of the app. Tell us a little about the app. It doesn't have to be a story. Please provide a link to app found online only.
Games apps are welcomed.
Ex. NFL Mobile, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8469781&postcount=628 gives current stats and scores. <-----I don't have the app installed so I don't know why it's any better than one off the market. Feel free to tell me why.
I like Silent Toggle Widget cuz it allow me to go from volume on, silent, and vibrate, from my home screen and only takes 1 icon.
Handcent SMS allows me to avoid small MMS pics and slide shows which are in the default messenger.
I like the game Alchemy. You start off with 4 elements and combine them to create new ones. I think theres over 300 combinations but I've only come up with 40ish. It's addicting.
FeedR. Great RSS feeds app, also has excellent sync with Google Reader.
Touiteur. I feel this is the best Twitter app out there.
Fruit Ninja. Very very addictive. Awesome fun. Open Feint makes it better.. as I always strive to get higher scores against my friends.
Tapatalk Pro. The best Forum surfing app out there.
Mp3 music download- it let's me download all the songs I

doubleTwist = Music player that looks a whole lot better than the stock
LED Light = turns your G2 into a flashlight, its a widget so that makes it quicker than having to open an application.

[Q] Must have apps

I am new to Android and just got my DINC2 this past week. What are peoples opinions of "Must Have" apps?
BTW, I work at a help desk, so if there are help desk specific apps that might be cool.
TIA!
Your question is pretty broad. It's about the same as asking that about your PC, and for both, you're going to get as many different responses as there might be people responding. So maybe the better question is what do you want to do with your Inc2 and maybe we can point you in some directions for some apps to fill that role.
As an example, I use my Android device to help me manage my diabetes. I use an app called OnTrack for this. This is a must-have app for me, but most people won't need nor use it.
It's also my primary portable media device, which I use a few different apps for.
As for anything to help with a helpdesk related job, I can only think of email access if it is externally accessible, and a task management app. The stock email client will likely work for your email access. For task management, I've yet to find one I was really happy with, but Astrid is pretty good, and I'm currently in the process of getting to know Taskos.
Thanks for your reply!
I kept the question broad on purpose. I have been using my iPod Touch and my wife's iPhone for years so I could come up with a list of my "Must Have" apps for those. The way I figure it is a smart phone is similar to a computer, but probably doesn't have dozens and dozens of apps installed (or at least not used daily). So I was hoping people would list their 5-10 most used (useful) Android apps.
My co-worker who has been using his Android device for a few years suggested:
- LookOut antivirus (like it so far)
- Android Assistant (dito)
- Launcher Pro (haven't taken the time to customize, so sticking with Sense for now)
- Barcode Scanner
After a little Google'ing I installed the following:
- Facebook App (just because)
- Angry Birds (loved the iOS version)
- arcMedia (seems decent, lots of codec support)
- ASTRO File Manager (UI seems very intuitive)
- Google Music (I got an in invite to the Beta)
- Pandora (use this on my laptop a lot, thought I'd try it on my DINC2)
- ShopSavy (again, loved the iOS version)
- xda
A few off the top of my head:
Titanium Backup - Requires root, but great for freezing bloat and backing up the device
Root Explorer - Doesn't necessarily require root, but is handy for going through the file system
EverNote - Keeps a LOT of my recipes handy, as well as notes for other things
DropBox - I occasionally need info there, so it's really quite handy for that
Google Reader - For reading my RSS feeds
Skype - Not critical, but handy when I'm without cell signal but have wifi
Titanium Media Sync - Keeps my pics backed up to Dropbox
XDA and DroidForums apps - Well, gotta be able to catch up when mobile
There are others I use, but honestly, I have found the stock apps cover most of what I need nicely. I will say that although I doubt I actually need it, I am playing around with JuiceDefender.
Clipper is one that I use a lot. The free version works excellent. It is a quickly accessible clipboard you can access from your status bar for all your log on data and different email signatures. I have to use several different email sigs depending on the level of security required for the recipients.
Well if all you want is a list of apps that people use regularly...
LauncherPro - Launcher/home replacement (paid version)
Slacker - Streaming music (the latest version blows, though)
Winamp - Better than the stock media player
Waze - Social mapping and realtime traffic
OnTrack - Diabetes oriented health management
eBuddy - Multi-protocol IM client
Arity - Advanced calculator
DriverDiary - Vehicle cost tracking tool (fuel, etc)
File Expert - File browser (I liked this one better than the other common ones)
Package Buddy - Shipping tracking tool (as in shipping packages)
Tweetdeck - Social networking app primarily used for Twitter
I don't do a lot of gaming, but I do some.
Wordfeud
Angry Birds
Live Blackjack
