Okay so my Verizon friends are all excited (rubbing it in) that metro New Orleans is getting the LTE network soon.
My question is when will we be getting Sprint 4G in New Orleans area? I have been quietly paying my extra $20 per month (2 EVO's) in hopes that we would sometime soon be getting 4g.
Why is Sprint so secretive about the roll-out areas/plan? I can't find anything online about when my area may possibly maybe have 4G.
Anyone know where I can find the plan for Sprint 4G?
I don't think there is anywhere to find it, but it'd be nice. In my area, we already have HSPA+ from T-Mobile and we're getting LTE from Verizon soon. If Sprint was rolling out 4G here I might stick with them longer.
there is no info out about it. I google every single day to see if I can find out when I'm going to get 4g here in milwaukee. I dont know how long I'm going to be able to hold or before I go back to verizon. I'm trying to stay positive...
Swyped from my cyanogenized and gingerbreaded EVO
Yeah I'm watiting for it to hit Long Island. I have to go all the way to the MannHatt to get any 4G
That is so true, no info at all. I'm here in San Diego and nothing so far for Sprint. T-Mobile has their 4G up and running here.
Sprint used to have a 4G road-map page available, but they've taken it down. Modern business at its finest.

In San Diego...national city and parts around there..marimar and adjacent area and north country...but you are right...nothing in San Diego/downtown region...I have picked up 4g around seaport village...and around petco park..
Well in case you haven't noticed Sprint has issued any new 4g city updates in months for WiMax. This might lead to the rumor of them converting over to LTE sometime whenever. Why continue investing in something that obviously they might be switching over?
Wow, that was a thread resurrection.

From what I understand, Sprint does not actually own any of their 4G network. They just have an agreeement with Clear to use their 4G network, so it really depends when Clear puts up more towers. If you are wondering if 4G is coming to your area, then you should ask Clear. I went to http://www.clear.com/coverage to see where the specific 4G coverage is. If it is in like "beta coverage" then it is light green. if you have light green near your area, that means that clear should be adding more towers in your area. If you travel to areas where the coverage is light green, then you should be able to connect, but it is not finalized.

Heh... Wimax is very popular, actually... Just not widely used by Phone carriers...
In macedonia we have wimax
Living in the greater New Orleans, LA area, the red-headed step-child to Sprint where 3G is slow, inconsistent, and 4G isn't even on the roadmap yet, I'd like to know if its possible to use my Sprint Evo's Wimax capabilities on Verizon's Wimax network, since they've had Wimax here since last year. It appears that the kind of roaming agreement between the two carriers includes phone and basic data, but not Wimax.
Any ideas?
If they had any brains they'd do a raoming agreement for that, too, getting them both much greater Wimax coverage much more quickly. But there I go again, expecting intelligence from a service provider...
Thank you for your time.

Sorry, I was made to understand that this was their Wimax. I'll take it from your response that though it may be a comparable service, it works in a different, non-compatible way.
I posted a question last week about how we could find out when we may be getting wimax in NOLA. Nobody seems to know so I am not holding my breath. Kinda sucks watching all these cities getting wimax and paying the $10 per phone every month without even a hint of when it may be coming.

Downtown NOLA has WiMax, Sprint just hasn't announced it yet. It is only in the downtown area though. I assume their probably still doing network testing or waiting for all of NOLA to be covered before they announce it to the public.
Found out about it yesterday and tried it out today. Was getting 5-6Mbps download and around 1Mbps upload earlier today. Though you won't find it on a Sprint coverage map (yet) you can see on clear.com what areas are covered in NOLA
AHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

16GB version huh? The price will probably undercut the VZW version..
Then that explains the Sprint Nexus thread from yesterday. Too ouSprint advertises it with LTE even though Sprint has no LTE network yet and will be in at most 4 mid sized markets by July.
I just left Sprint for Verizon for the Nexus and LTE. I have banned Sprint for life becuase of thet horrible Wimax service. It will take Sprint several years to get LTE to the coverage level Verizon has today. And by then....
Sprint said that everywhere that has 3G will have LTE, and if I'm not mistaken, the roll-out is to be completed by the end of this year. However, where I live in CA, I have 4G everywhere anyway.
cool, but after whole Wimax rollout, or lack there of..... I'm sticking with Verizon.

I feel the same way. Sprint is just too late getting into the game to be competitive for at least another 2+ years.
EDIT: Just noticed they are specifically saying it will come with Google Wallet...
These talks of being late to the game are absurd. Sprint was first with 3G, first with 4G, and will be first with LTE-Advanced. Just because they didn't cover where you live doesn't mean tons of people weren't covered.
I thought the agreement was already made for Sprint to utilize Verizons LTE as they do 3G now?

not absurd. If they want to compete with Verizon, they better damn well compete, not just be first to do something then allow Verizon to blow by them like they're standing still.
They are competing. That's why they're going to be rolling out their LTE network so fast. http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/07/sprint-converts-its-cdma-network-to-lte/?m=false

Verizon LTE rollout begins: December 2010.
Sprint's LTE rollout begins: Mid 2012.
I'd say that's pretty late considering Verizon has LTE in like 190 cities right now.
Sprints rollout already began, and you act like Sprints been stuck on 3G since then. They haven't, we've had 4G for years.

Dude, I've had Sprint for over 4 years. Now I have Verizon. Compared to the overall coverage and consistent network speeds, Sprint BLOWS.
Yeah well i was a total Sprint "fanboy" for quite a while... was a customer since 2000 until last month.
After putting up terrible 3g speeds for years and no Wimax in my area (Buffalo, NY) on my Evo 4G(paying an extra $15 a month for having a 4G phone), and a Nexus S 4G, and then an Evo 3D.... i finally had enough.
Verizon has been fantastic and i don't see any reason to go to Sprint at any time in the foreseeable future.
BTW, i'm not arguing, Sprint is probably great in some areas. That was a bit of venting, from all the years of crap on Sprint in Buffalo, NY. lol.
Just ditched Sprint for the Verizon Nexus. I'll totally consider going back to Sprint in another 19.25 months if this whole network vision thing actually plays out like they say it will.

You've had WiMax in very limited capacity with very little real-world availability since mid 2010. That isn't "years" of having 4G.
Look at it whatever way you want, Sprint is never going to be able to keep up or roll out LTE as fast as Verizon. They don't have the money to do it. They're talking about their first markets (only 4) in "mid 2012". And it will require all new devices because its not compatible with current WiMax ones. They would have to launch 100's of markets in 2012 to match Verizon.
So i've been paying an additional $10 a month per line on my phones with 4G capabilities. Initally I had the OG EVO, 3D, and now Epic Touch. Its been well over a year probably close to two and I still dont have 4G not that this is something I need but it is something ive been paying for.
I dont live in some rural area (San Diego) so I dont see why they are lagging. Maybe this whole transition from 4G to LTE but that change was fairly recent.
Of couse when you call sprint they are not going to give you any time frame.
So I guess im stuck still paying the additional $10 on each line for a service I cannot access where I live and havent since day one.
Oh well, hopefully once LTE gets going SD will be one of the first to run it.
Anyone with some inside info care to provide some good news?
Sprint now defines that $10 as a smartphone surcharge and applies it to anything that runs iOS, Android, Bby, or WinMo 4g or not, although I don't think sprint has any current smartphones that aren't 4g.
You would've been better off to fight the 4g battle when the evo came out IMO.

True..
At the time when the EVO came out I believe was the only 4G phone they carried so I guess was under the impression the charge was for 4G but I do see it has changed to a general charge for smart phones.
So I guess at this point its just a waiting game.
Techincally the evo was out first, but idunno where you lived, but the Epic was available first here due to false demand scams by HTC... either that or they made them one at a time. Seriously didnt you get enough of this topic in the evo forums?? I know we got sick of it in the Epic forums...

Best answer to sprint lte is 3 years before most places fully see it. Hell I have been in a wimax test arear for over 2 years and at a sprint store I heard a salesman tell a customer there was no 4g at all but when it gets here it will be awesome. When sprints own staff has no idea 4g is even in their own service area how can I even trust them to put towers up.
Good for you people in great big luscious data driven cities, sucks every where else
I have had several sprint employees tell me that here in Virginia it should be within 2 years.
I have a question of my own. I have had a few people tell me that when LTE comes around we will have to have new phones because the hardware like in the Epic Touch will not work on LTE. Any truth to this?

I googled, but couldn't find anyone else talking about it. I'd be interested to see what other people's experience with it was, i.e. if it has been improving, signal strength, etc.

And why don't I? Show me their national WiMax coverage that they rolled out in the last 2 years.... right, it doesn't exist. Same will be for LTE. Sorry, but just because Sprint says they're going to roll it out by the end of 2013 doesn't mean anything to me or any other slightly skeptical person.
Believe me, I'm pulling for them. I'd love to see Sprint step it up big time and challenge AT&T and Verizon's LTE efforts, but I find it hard to believe that Sprint will ever be able to catch up. Even if they completely covered their 3G network with LTE in that time (which they just can't physically/monetarily do), they won't be catching Verizon or even AT&T by that point.
Lol right sprint won't do it everyone forgets clear was the primary doing the rollouts and yeah. The BOD wants this to happen I am sure they will make sure it happens by the deadline or before and then once that is done they can hopefully jump it down to the 800mhz band as well. I think it will and if not 24 months from now I will move on but there are more posts of LTE then I saw of WiMAX when that started.
Not to mention other cell companies that work with sprint well one anyways atm is also helping.

When Sprint saw the writing on the wall for WiMax, they did the smart thing and stopped investing in it.
Good for them. They instead began their LTE preparations along with beginning their Network Vision deployment. They accelerated their 800mhz refarm.

Sprint has never been able to compete on coverage - 4g or otherwise. Hell, their native CDMA network is smaller than T-Mobile's network. That said, Sprint has a big ol boatload of spectrum, which means they can continue to provide unlimited data (or eventually, faster speeds) far longer than their competition can.
Now, I'm a T-Mobile customer as well as a Sprint customer, and was about to drop my Sprint line for a prepaid line, but Sprint (and T-Mobile) are on the upswing and I very much like the progress they're making.

I think Sprint could potentially do better than AT&T with their LTE rollout as AT&T seems to be going pretty slowly about it. However, VZW is lighting up more and more areas every few weeks, so I don't think anyone will catch them until VZW has started moving to another network standard. I have read that Sprint's LTE plans are very aggressive, so it could just be they are installing and testing the network in several large markets right now to turn on several cities all at once rather than just a small handful like AT&T did at the start.

Interesting theory, but Verizon and even ATT will complete their rollout before Sprint does. So by the time Sprint gets to enjoying LTE across the network, Verizon and ATT will be looking at deploying VoLTE.
They can have buttloads of spectrum, but they don't have the resources to compete with rollouts or to to advance in a timely manner. They will always be playing third base.
Heck, MetroPCS rolled out LTE before them (Verizon too, for that matter).
I managed to get a weak signal in parts of the KC metro, probably coming from the area around the Sprint Campus in Overland Park. I may drive closer later today and see what kind of speed I can get.

That would totally depend on the market you're in.
The teams that are going around putting in the 4G upgrade are doing multiple things depending on the market.
For example, I asked this question specifically to a sprint tech the other day when purchasing my S3.
I live in Miramar/Pembroke Pines Florida (Just West of FtLauderdale).
Signal here is great in some spots (near I-75 or the turnpike) and almost non-existent anywhere else. Hell the other day I saw the nice little "Hey you're now roaming" message on my S3 (I never saw that on my Evo, though the signal was horrible).
The tech said that they are in fact upgrading EVERYTHING in my area, 3G, normal phone cellular and 4G LTE (they said the wimax would not be upgraded of course). It took them a minute to find the info as they had to look it up for my specific area to see what is and is not being upgraded.
She mentioned specifically that it wasn't just upgrading the current towers, but putting in more to improve coverage in areas such as Plantation, pembroke and Miramar specfically.
So my advice is to either wait and see what happens, or try to contact sprint and find out about your area.
