[Q] Unable to unlock TMobile G2 - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I recently obtained the TMobile G2 and its unlock code.
I inserted a foreign SIM and entered the unlock code.
However during the unlock reboot process, i manually rebooted it.
Since then it has not asked for any Unlock code no matter what.
I have also tried factory reset as well but it did not help. Please support!!

But the sim is still not showing any network? Make sure the sim is not old/out of date/.... make sure it is working in another handset. If it is, then you will need to gfree root and super Cid as there have been issues regarding network unlock codes.

I tried two sim cards which worked fine on the other phone, however did not work on my G2 - showed up as no network.
what is gfree root and super cid? any pointers on that?

Just use gfree, it will SIM unlock as well as giving you full radio S-OFF and SuperCID. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/wik...Phone.2C_Set_SuperCID.2C_and_Turn_Radio_S-OFF . You will need at least temp root to run it.

Thanks folks...
After i use gfree/ do a temp root. How to i verify if the phone is unlocked?
nd how to revert back from that root?

To verify it is unlocked you will need to put in a different SIM card from the network that the phone was locked to, and see if it will recognise it.
If you only did a temp root, then if you reboot you shouldn't have root any more.

I temp root the phone- i try to insert new SIM i need to reboot rite and ill loose the root.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Rooting_the_G2
this page says- "......
@CID: 11111111 <--- this response means you have superCID!
@SIMLOCK= 00 <--- this means your simlock is off.
@secu_flag: 0 <--- this means your radio is S-OFF.
....."
now what should the value be for "@SIMLOCK="??

You can run gfree without a SIM or with your old SIM in, you don't need to put in the new one that the phone won't recognise whilst it's locked.
I'm not sure I understand your last question. I don't know what the value will be before you run gfree to unlock it, it will have some sort of value which will equate to the network it's locked to. After unlocking with gfree it should set that value to 00 as it shows.

Oh! my mistake.. if i unlock that means the SIMLOCK=00.
Ill try it out now
Thanks for the help steviewevie and wileykat as well!!

Just run "gfree -f". There's no point in only unlocking part of it. Might as well own your phone... it is yours, right?

yes.. what does that command do?

-f | --free_all: same as --secu_flag off --sim_unlock --cid 11111111

Neat!! Thanks..
This is what i should do -
Unzip the gfree_temp-root.zip files to a folder.
And using adb-
$ adb push su /sdcard/su
$ adb push Superuser.apk /sdcard/Superuser.apk
$ adb push rage /data/local/tmp/rage
$ adb push busybox /data/local/tmp/busybox
$ adb push root /data/local/tmp/root
$ adb shell chmod 0755 /data/local/tmp/*
ON The PHONE:
Launch Terminal Emulator
$ /data/local/tmp/rage
Wait for the message: "Forked #### childs."
Menu > Reset Term - Terminal Emulator will exit.
Launch Terminal Emulator, it Force Closes. Launch a second time, and you'll have a root shell.
Now i have temporary root:
then in the terminal emulator
# ./gfree -f
:: This should unlock for all networks and after reboot the phone would be unrooted.
Is this correct?

You left out some commands, like the really important one where you set the permissions on gfree, just make sure to follow the guide to a "T" and you should be good. If something happens, I'm sure that one of us can help you.
EDIT: And the point of using GFree is so that its rooted not unrooted. If you don't understand it fully, I wouldn't do it, bad things happen when people try things that they don't fully understand.

Edit - never mind, didn't notice the other answers from my phone.

If you don't know how to use adb/fastboot don't do this. Use the search function and google and learn how to use them. If you know everything about them come back. I made a pretty nice tutorial, many people used it already with success. But I won't add anything like "go to startmenu and type..."
If your INFOCID is NOT one of these you need to make a goldcard to downgrade!

HTC__E11
HTC__203
HTC__Y13
HTC__102
HTC__405
HTC__304
HTC__A07

check with:
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot oem boot
Here is a great guide how to make a goldcard, follow the first part and come back here then.
Get theses 3 files:

Since this uses some security holes to gain root privileges on your phone some antivirus programs on your pc might warn you that this contains a virus. Thats not the case!

Extract misc_version_01.zip (only misc_version is needed)
Get the PC10IMG.zip from here or download the full RUU from here.
If you already downloaded the 1.34 RUU somewhere else you can skip this step.
Code:
adb push psneuter /data/local/tmp
adb push misc_version /data/local/tmp
adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/psneuter
adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/misc_version
adb shell /data/local/tmp/psneuter
adb shell
Check if you have the '#' sign instead of the '$'
If you see the '#' sign you got root!
Code:
/data/local/tmp/misc_version -s 1.33.405.5
exit
If you have downloaded the 1.34.405.5_PC10IMG.zip copy it to you SD-Card and rename it to PC10IMG.zip.
If you downloaded the full RUU or had it already execute the exe file (mine is called RUU_Vision_HTC_WWE_1.34.405.5_Radio_12.28b.60.140e_26.03.02.26_M_release_155556_signed.exe), start explorer and type %temp% in the adress bar.
Look in all the folders starting with a { sign and also in the sub directories if it also starts with a { sign, in one of the subdirectories there should be a rom.zip file with 298.442.206 bytes and the MD5 sum 2ff42897cd27e0db425a2cf36c8bd078.
Copy this rom.zip to your SD-Card on the phone and rename it to PC10IMG.zip
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
(or turn your phone of and on again while holding the trackbad).
Wait till the phone is in bootloader mode (white screen should look like this but with other infos http://www.brutzelstube.de/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/hboot.jpg)
Select bootloader (vol +/- buttons for navigation and power button for select).
Wait for the phone to scan the sdcard, once it's done it will ask you if you want to start the update. Confirm it and wait till it's done. Reboot with powerbutton when asked.
After the reboot check for version informations, it should show this:
Enable USB-Debugging on your phone
Extract root.zip
Code:
adb install AndroidTerm.apk
adb push busybox /data/local/tmp/
adb push gfree /data/local/tmp/
adb push rage /data/local/tmp
adb push root /data/local/tmp/
adb shell chmod 0755 /data/local/tmp/*
adb push su /sdcard/
adb push Superuser.apk /sdcard/
Start the Terminal app on your phone and type:
Code:
/data/local/tmp/rage
Wait until you see the message "Forked #### childs.", reset Terminal (menu > Reset Term). The Terminal app will close, launch it again. It will force close, launch it again.
You should see the magic '#' sign again.
Next type in the terminal
Code:
/data/local/tmp/gfree -f
, this will turn Security off (S-OFF), remove SIM Lock and set CID to 11111111.
Last step in terminal app on your phone is to execute these commands.
Code:
/data/local/tmp/root
sync
This will root your phone. It's possible that you get an error message "mkdir: /system/xbin already exists", don't worry everything should be ok.
After that restart your phone.
Now get ROM Manager and install the recovery image from there. If you are happy with the 1.34 software everything is done here, if not you can flash anything you want now.
Nice work! We allways need more people using the magic of root

Without the extension... .txt is added by your browser presumably so you'll have to rename it

It seems like you use a wrong PC10IMG.zip for your phone. Did you download the zip from here or got it yourself from the full ruu?

[HELP] Desire z Rooting

Hi! Could someone help me with desire Z phone on how to root?
*On this step I do got an error saying "/data/local/tmp/root not found" I already got S-Off.
Code:
# On the computer, open terminal and type the following commands:
adb push gfree /data/local
adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/gfree
# Launch the Terminal Emulator & run the following command:
/data/local/gfree -f
sync
/data/local/tmp/root
*Also after installing CWM3 when boot to recovery I got the red triangle and explamation icon.
*My Software number 1.34.707.5 do I need to downgrade this to 1.34.707.3?
Anyone got a link to a good guide for rooting Desire Z, lots of guild but some of them are different and kind of confusing. Very new to android system.
Thanks!
EDIT:
I have done this http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Rooting_the_Vision_.28G2.2FDZ.29_and_DHD except for the HBOOT.
When reboot to recover on ROM manager I still get red triangle icon.
This are all ok.
Code:
gfree verify_cid returned:
@CID: 11111111
OK
gfree verify_secu_flag returned:
@secu_flag: 0
OK
gfree verify_simlock returned:
@SIMLOCK= 00
OK
check and see if you have superuser in your app tray.

It's a known issue on the G2 that you need to flash the CWM multiple times. Try flashing it about 3 times, then reboot into recovery.

[Q] Turning S-on help

I am trying to unroot my g2 in order to send it in. I used gfree method on Wiki to root the phone and to unroot it. However, I am stuck trying to turn s-on. When I enter:
$ adb shell /data/local/tmp/psneuter
I am getting:
/data/local/tmp/psneuter: permission denied
Any ideas?
I believe you have to do "chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/psneuter" on it (I'm not -too- sure on the numbers, but I think it's 755)
EDIT: chmod 777, my bad - thanks posters below
Well the steps from the wiki are:
$ adb push psneuter /data/local/tmp/psneuter
$ adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/psneuter
$ adb shell /data/local/tmp/psneuter
$ adb shell
It's the 3rd one that I am stuck on.
Since I am unable to get temp root following the wiki, would I be able to use visionary to get temp root and then s-on following the wiki?

Hi !
Are you sure that you got a valid copy of psneuter?
Try to download the zip from psneuter.zip unpack it and try it again with the file that is called psneuter in it.

Thanks for the help! Unfortunately that didn't work either. Not sure whats going on, but I think it's something with the phone. I just cannot figure it out. At least it works for now.

Thanks you for trying to help! When I got to the third step it told me permission denied again.
I was able to FINALLY get s-on. I thought I would post how I did just in case anyone else ends up having this problem.
I used visionary to temp root my phone and then used the wiki to turn s-on. Only problem I had was trying to remove the psneuter file from the phone. Other than that no problems. Now I shall see if I can get away with sending the phone in.

[Q] Permroot on Desire Z failed - what I do wrong?

Hello.
I've tried to root my Desire Z. I wanted to achieve only the ROOT not S-off and so on. Just to be able to use some root requiring applications like DSP Manager or Adds free.
1. So I've downloaded and installed Android SDK.
2. Started ADB
3. "adb devices" gave me the proper answer
4. Then I've copied and started psneuter and misc_vesion:
adb push psneuter /data/local/tmp
adb push misc_version /data/local/tmp
adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/psneuter
adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/misc_version
adb shell /data/local/tmp/psneuter
adb shell
/data/local/tmp/misc_version -s 1.33.405.5
exit
5. Then I've tried to root the phone:
Ive copied the required files:
adb install AndroidTerm.apk
adb push busybox /data/local/tmp/
adb push gfree /data/local/tmp/
adb push rage /data/local/tmp
adb push root /data/local/tmp/
adb shell chmod 0755 /data/local/tmp/*
adb push su /sdcard/
adb push Superuser.apk /sdcard/
And then from the Terminal Emulator I've entered
/data/local/tmp/root
I've got some messages that the everything is read only so I've tried rage first:
/data/local/tmp/rage
I've got the proper "Forked #### childs" output
and then I've tried the "/data/local/tmp/root" again. But I'm getting the "cannot fork" message.
I'm new in this stuff s please help me. What do I do wrong?
I only want the simple root access I don't want to downgrade my phone and install any custom roms.
Please help.
ps. my "compilation number" is: 1.72.405
As far as I remember your supposed to flash 1.34 Rom after changing the version number to 1.33 as the rooting is only possible via 1.34 Rom and not 1.72 Rom .... And you clearly missed that step .... Open desire z wiki and read the psneuter guide ... Follow it word for word .... You will root your phone

Just out of curiosity, if you only want to root to use some applications and such, why don't you just temp root using visionary and just redo it whenever you restart your phone?

hispeedworm - I don't want to downgrade my phone. I don't need it and I don't want to loose whole the settings and apps and start from the beginning just for using some special apps.
mmduluth - I've used the visionary method from this topic while it seemed the easiest one for the beginner. However after taping the "TempRoot Now!" the VISIONary+ seemed to hang. The screen was black for several minutes.
So I've decided it does not work.
Anyway, I'd prefer to have permanent root than a temp one for example for using "autostarts" - which as far as I'm concerned works AFTER rebooting the phone.
So anyone could tell me where is a mistake in what I did?
I suppose I've omitted one thing in former trials so I've tried to root it again.
After entering the Terminal Emulator I've run rage:
/data/local/tmp/rage
I've got the Forked #### childs message so everything was ok till then.
Then I've reset terminal --> menu-->reset term
And then I've run the terminal again.
I should get the # sign but what I get is the totally white screen with no possibility to write any command. It's not responding. I can only get out from it by pressing the home button.
So what's going wrong?

If you read enough threads/post, at the moment, the only way to gain permaroot is to downgrade your ROM. Unless, somebody finds a way to do it without the need to downgrade.
And, as I understand, using Visionary apps would cause damage to your device. Be careful!
Cheers...
Thank you silverwind. Now it's clear.
So anyone is working on this?
Cheers

6.Run HxD.exe, select "OK" at the prompt then File -> Open and locate misc.img (which is in the current directory). On the 11th line you should see the version number of your current ROM. I set my version number to 2.13.401.2 since this was the version number. The changes made will be highlighted in red. File -> Save As and name it misc2.img.
Pictures!
1. Find your version my was 10.13.401.2

If your version of misc.img match the required version of the RUU you can complete the tutorial (this is not a problem to which this guide will help you). If the versions are different, set the version that is required, and continue the tutorial from step 7.
7. Back to adb window. Copy the misc2.img to sdcard. (no # or $)

I write code a several times and allways stuck at that point... i don't know what to do anymore.. what could be wrong? My WFS is S-ON and it is not rooted yet
gusta1, be sure you are in the directory where you put the files. For example, if you extracted them in D:\WFS\APPS then in CMD you need to type command: chdir D:\WFS\APPS and after that start with step 5 from tutorial.
I have the same problem as gusta1 even I'm in proper folder I've got following message:
$ ./data/local/tmp/zergRush
./data/local/tmp/zergRush

I run cmd as admin (Vista), repeated prcedure and restarted phone several times, but with the same result.
But my history is different. I have S-off my Wildfire S successfuly at the begining when I was on 2.3.3. However I put phone to my wife and once phone asked for update to 2.3.5 she allowed it and S-off was gone. Since that I can not move, everywhere is some error.

rm /data/local/tmp/sh
Then continue with the step to execute zerg rush.

Hi
I've got an UK T-mobile S_ON WFS with
HBoot 0.90.000
Android 2.3.3
Rom 1.34.11.03
HTC unlock bootloader fails with error 190 and tip http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21120374 fails with Hboot bypassed.
Am I likely to have any major problems? Don't want to brick my phone.
Thanks
