What happens after 2.2 update? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First question will I receive the froyo update if I have a custom rom and kernel?
Second what will the update do to my rom and kernel and will it unroot my phone?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

Safe to system update while rooted?

I just went back to the normal rom and see i have system update? Is it fine to update when im rooted idk what it is im on android 2.2. Im new what is this system update? Thanks
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
It won't work if you still have a custom recovery and/or deleted system apps. There's no real reason to update like that when you can just flash an updated ROM and call it a day. Besides, there haven't been any updates for a while now, and as soon as one hits rest assured that all our ROMs will get updated by their respective devs.
Ok thanks
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I heard from someone a while ago it might brick your phone, so I just turned off the automatic system updates. Just flash an updated rom and you're good.
first of all the update will download but, it wont install. If you really want the update you will have to either wait until there is a custom rom with it or unroot and install the update.

[Q] Preperation to upgrade to OTA 2.3 from custom ROM

I'm already seeing a number of questions regarding the similar issue, but I haven't found a satisfying answer for my need yet. So, here goes:
Currently I'm using Myn's TwoPointTwo Custom ROM, along with a custom Kernel. And I'd like to upgrade to the stock Gingerbread ROM coming OTA pretty soon. By reading several posts recently, I got the impression that I am not able to just upgrade it via Settings menu.
What do I need to do in order to upgrade to the stock Gingerbread ROM without any issue?
You would probably have to go back to stock rom and unroot. Make sure it has all the bloatware and what not.

You really want to be sure NOT to accept the upgrade over the air even if it prompts you, unless you're trying to get rid of root access as well.
Truly, the best thing is to hold off until the Dev's start putting out some of their sweet work!
I can't wait to see what some of the bigger names Dev'ing on the Evo come up with in the next few weeks....
Devs will have the root verison out within hours of its leak.

Will there be custom roms based off of the OTA gingerbread update?

I was just curious. I kind of don't want to go back to stock ROM because its backed up on my computer. Also, it wad becoming unstable so now I'm on Virtuous. I rather get a ROM thats based off that release because of the TV out cable. I hope there will be
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA Premium App
Yes. There will be at least one rooted stock ROM. However, most other ROMs will be customized ROMs that utilize the new Gingerbread kernel.
I'd like to point out the kernel source may be for a kernel that only works with the OTA. That's how its been with the Tbolt. Not so bad because it would spawn a whole new generation of much improved gingerbread ROMs.
Thats all I wanted to know seeing how they got gingerbread roms from devices like the HTC Sensation, I don't think it'll take that long to get a custom ROM cooked up haha! As long as there will be roms based off it, I'll be happy hopefully they'll have custom themes

Nope, absolutely no developer will create a custom rom from this new official rom that's coming out. They haven't done it in the past, why would they start making new custom roms based off of official OTA roms?
Being on a custom rom rooted will we be able to update to stock?
Or will something go dearly wrong if we try?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
okay, so, for us rom users who don't want to go back to stock.
do we have to flash stock back onto the device?, to get the update? or just wait for a custom kernal
and how does one flash the radio without bricking the phone?

devs play with the source code kernal and work from there.
You will lose root if you update to stock.

Someone will release a rooted version of the ROM which you can use, or just wait for your developer to update their ROM.
No. That update won't be supported. Everyones gonna stop devving the day before its released. Just kidding lol.

I'll wait for a rooted version to release. But if custom roms like Virtuous, Skyraider, or Incrom update, I'll do that
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA Premium App
I'm personally going to wait until there is a root method. I'll unroot my stock froyo. update. root the update, adb shell and remove the vzw crap and install whatever new kernel has been created from the source code. best way to ensure everything works 100%

skyraider won't see the update, i doubt it, the dev of that rom already moved on to the t-bolt.

if you can root the update, no one knows for sure if unrevoked or any method will work, let us know if it does or not!
I'm on 2.2 rooted using unrevoked3 - such a easy process. From what I have been reading, it's not as simple in reverse. I really want 2.3 for the VoIP capabilities and improved keyboard but I'm afraid to brick my phone unrooting it. Also, I live off of WiFi tether for root users and I don't know how long I could wait for another unrevoked or similar to give root on 2.3 so that I can reinstall the app.
So I'm assuming I should just wait for a custom ROM like most everyone else. Is it hard to flash a custom ROM? More or less difficult than the painless 1-click root?
Sent from my ADR6300 using Tapatalk
Probably not quite as painless as unrevoked, but certainly not difficult either. Rom manager actually makes rom flashing pretty simple but seems buggy for a lot of people. I'd wait for the rooted OTA to be posted and flash that. Might want to do a little reading on flashing roms and root in general, there are some good stickies in the incredible forums.
Can I use the root method even on a custom sense ROM?

I'm not wanting to insult you, honestly, but that question reflects a deep lack of knowledge. But, you're at XDA and that's the best place to fix that!
I'll answer your question....
Nobody could probably tell you because nobody has ever tried rooting a custom ROM before.
That said, do some searching and some reading and get familiar with what this community is all about. You will be amazed.
So I flashed the 2.3.4 GB Rom posted by JoelZ yesterday. Some stuff looks diferent but not a whole lot. Was I wrong to expect the newer style keyboard, lockscreen and notification bar? Nevertheless, it boots wicked quick and feels faster.

T-Mobile update notification not going away, but i'm rooted + custom ROM

I just rooted and flashed beast mod on my gs2. An hour after using it, T-mobile popped up in my notification tray with a new update. I'm assuming this is 2.3.6 and eventually the dev's will develop or update their roms.
I just want to make sure that I shouldn't update my phone this way, or I will be bricked?
i dont think it will brick you, but it will unroot you.

Juggernaut v3.7 and Tmobile software update????
I am using Juggernaut v3.7 ROM, and my phone recently constantly show Message about upgrade the software from Tmobile. What should I do next? Flash stock rom 2.3.6 to get rid of Tmobile upgrade? and then can I flash Juggernaut v3.7 back to my phone?
Is there any way to disable (inside the code or build.prop file) the upgarde notification?

T-Mobile update service
Can I do the T-Mobile update while rooted on a custom rom?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
This is going to be a hot item for most of us with rooted phones. Simply no way of knowing what will happen should we let the update go through. And just to be safe, most of us would prefer to cancel the update.
I followed someone else's advice and used Titanium Backup Pro to:
- wipe data for "Device Manager"
- "freeze" the same application
The nag is gone. I reckon this method should work for everyone with rooted phones.
Otherwise, we'd need to wait to respective ROM teams to release their own patches etc.
TB team should see a nice uptick in app purchases in next few days. The app is well worth it, so if you been on a fence, get it now, $6 well spent.
[Q]OTA Update but i'm rooted?
I just got the ota update. It says it's going to automatically update my phone in 24 hrs. Is this going to mess my phone up? I am currently rooted with. Bombradier rom. Do I need to do anything? Thanks
Sent from my SGH-T989
i am rooted with stock rom and receive the update, np at all. In your case, you have a different rom and not stock. odin probably is the best bet.
bought sgs2 last weekend and rooted using superoneclick and at the end of the day, receive ota update and update my sgs2 and i forgot that i am rooted. i left my phone to finish updating and when i came back, its up and have 2.3.6 uVKL1, did not receive any problem. battery great, wifi calling is there. im just surprised it let me update even though my phone is rooted. btw stock rom, stock kernel just rooted.
I think I'll just wait until somebody comes out with an official sticky solution because I didn't flash any ROM to mine, I just rooted it.... I don't know what to do either... Until someone posts a solution there will be several posts pertaining to this subject

What happens when ICS comes out?

u have custom cmw and custom kernel i think u gonna have problem update OTA...my advice to u stay a way from the update when it starts check back here devs gonna tell u what to do ..espcially if u like ur phone rooted ...
I want ICS as fast as possible. Could I go back to stock and then update? I don't mind losing customizations, if I get ICS!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I927 using XDA
Yep. Think about it. We all started with stock on GB and then flashed rooted..however..it's better to wait for root..
Would Clockwork Recovery cause problems with the ota update? I just remembered that I have a stock nandroid backup.
If I have to get rid of Clockwork Recovery, how would I go about that?
When ICS is released, I'd wait until someone roots it before installing it. I'd ignore any 'ufficial' update and do everything through CWM.
In my opinion:
Custom ROM > Stock Rooted ICS > Official ICS.
