Came from VIBRANT to EPIC... same thing wheb rooting/flashing? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well I had to make a trade from tmobile to sprint.... My vibrant was the best, running Team Whiskeys NeroV4 with a 1.4ghz Kernal. Glad I got a keyboard now though, at least. So it seems like it is more difficult to root n what not with the epic. Is that true??? Just by reading a few posts on rooting still has me holdin off a bit on rooting. I downloaded 2.5.5 one click and ima do this. Just nervous.
I soft bricked my vibrant like 3 times. Is this phone difficult to hard brick as well? How do u boot into recovery? Any rom recommendations? I support #Never Again.

The one click root is awesome. Recovery mode is volume down, camera and power. Feel free to PM me if you have questions. I was in the same boat as you. Nervous.

Also in my opinion the phone is extremely difficult to brick. I'm using ViperRom. It's pretty awesome. ViperRom has it's own website, Ticket system and WIKI as well

The one click is simple man. Just click the batch file and watch it root in front of your eyes.

It is really easy to root. I have found it difficult to brick, as I have done many things you are not supposed to.

Fascinate replacement Including here Tues...questions

So, Verizon decided they didn't want to deal with me and my lack of mobile web issue, and is sending me an Inc2. It should be here Tuesday. So, being the super sluthe I am, I've been checking out all the posts about rooting, and roms, and themes and apps. Is it really that easy to root this phone? Really??? There's no problems with voodoo and non-voodoo, and flashing the wrong kernel with the wrong cwm???? Seriously????? OMG! I'm going to love this phone! I think I've been able to use my fascinate for about 10 days out of the last 30 because I flashed a voodoo kernel on a non-voodoo rom and bricked my phone. I had to go back to eclair , and now I can't root it again. I can't wait to get this phone!
Peace!

Yep, now that Gingerbread has been s-off'd this phone just became awesome. I can't ever see myself going to something different for the time being.
Oh yes. Coming from the charge this phone is a piece of cake to root and flash

Great. This is not only my first rooting, but my first android period. Now I'll be afraid to move to another device, not that I want to right now. Probably never leave htc anyway.

I came from an Incredible which was rooted and running CM7 for about 8 months. Now that I had the Incredible 2 I felt underwhelmed because I couldn't root it. That has all went away since I am rooted.
I dont see how this phone is easier to root? SuperOneClick was pretty straight forward. And the Fascinate was pretty unbrickable. This phone isnt.

Gotta agree here. Just came from the Fassy myself. Was pretty simple as long as you knew what you were doing and followed directions and not flashing voodoo onto non voodoo I felt better knowing it was virtually impossible to brick my device with Odin on standby. I just rooted my inc2 last night and I havent flashed anything yet but I am researching the better and stable roms in the dev section to try and pick one. They all look great so its hard to decide. Lol. Think I want a Sense 3.0 rom though. Anyone have any good suggestions? Preferably one that is bugless and everything functioning correctly.

Thanks! Haven't touched Odin in a while, I'm a few updates back. Good to see it'll work on our new phones... now... how come nobody has root yet?
Comming from a Evo 4g...was wondering...I looked at this and it says to hit the 1 key...I am guessing we do not need to do this for the E4T ? And I guess Odin is what we use to flash things to the phone ?
When I did the Evo, I had to do the old school root. Unrevoked and all that was not around lol..
What is Odin?
Just found out I get the phone for free with cyanogen working for Samsung will the phone be worth it or should I stick with my Evo 3d and Droid x? Plus never used Odin before really just helped people root their phones with it along time ago it just unlocks the phone right?

I think I read already. There were screenshots already posted. I should also have this Friday morning if Sprint doesn't open it up Thursday night or Best Buy even.
Correction. This was posted in E4GT General.
You get to *odin mode* by holding down volumne + and - keys at the same time along with the power key, release power key when device turns on while continuing to hold + and - keys untill the droid guy screen comes on, then release.
Glad to see you over here by the way Crawrj. I take it your upgrading as well. Look forward to your first plus kernel for this thing.

yeah like deano said, you can flash ANYTHING. once AdamOutler gets started on development for our device, we will be able to flash custom bootloaders like the Captivate can, for those who dont know, the Captivate was recently able to flash the Nexus S bootloader which means it is basically a Nexus S in disguise lol. Odin will also let us falsh stock and custom ROMs and kerenls as well as Modems (radios) plus recoveries such as CWM.
Also if anything screws up its ur way outta trouble...things such as "omg i'm bricked" and "help i'm stuck on the boot logo" won't be seen as much in the Q and A section as much... get to know Odin referring to people coming from EVO or any other phone Odin is ur new bff

Love Odin
Sounds cool. Ahh starting the learning all over again lol.
Odin is great. It was almost impossible to brick the Epic with it. If you get any kind of phone life, you can almost always get it back to stock and start again. Also, 30 seconds to flash a different modem. We had some great stock GB leaks with Busybox,Superuser included (thanks Crawrj.) Great tool.

Its really not that involved. All you do is put a tar file in "phone" and a pit file in "Pit" and select run and let it do its thing. Modems get flashed in "PDA" section and that's basically it. There is more detail but that's a quick rundown. I am not the most tech saavy myself but you catch on quick. I have used it 50+ times. I will try to run down a more thorough description.

Congrats man on the new phone. No the rooting process I'd going to be different on the epic. Sfhub has created a one touch root method that is definitely the most user friendly, and is highly recommended.

Great choice man on a phone but forget the way you thought with the Evo in some cases and do hardcore reading up on your new phone prior to doing anything since it will save the million and one questions you may ask. Thank you....I do like the thinness of the phone compared to my evo.....it is pretty large though!
I am VERY familar with rooting and restoring roms on my evo, I think I did it about 100+ times.
It was pretty simple, download Unrevoked and bam! I am looking at Odin and Sfhub's one touch root method.....so...One of them should be fine.
I dont understand what the modems are used for. Do most ROMS come with them? I understand that they are used to communicate with Carrier towers...but is the higher version always better? What are they compared to on an Evo, if at all.
Thanks!

Yeah, I just got mine last night and this is what I plan on doing at work today. Mine is on el29 so as I understand it I would want to flash rooted el29 then install cwm in autoroot. Once I've had it for a few days I'll probably start testing out third party roms but I have a weird thing where I like to run stock(ish) for a little bit just so I get to know the phone and know what "baseline" performs like. Also, I already like this phone stock more than the Evo with Sense. Touchwiz seems much less intrusive and overly glossy. Only little annoyance I have is that when I did OTA update to el29 I lost scrolling wallpaper so I may jump to calkulins rom just to get that back.

Ive had my Epic 4g Touch for a couple of days now. Im coming from the Evo 3D. Touchwiz sucks compared to sense but this phone feels more powerful and smooth. Evo 3D also has a bigger dev support here in xda. Hopefully this changes considering this is a relatively new phone. I love the big screen on this phone and how thin it is. Im keeping it untill HTC comes out with at 4.5+ inch phone. Go to youtube and looks for qbkimg77 videos on this phone. They are very helpful.

First of all unrevoked is only for HTC devices in the Dev section you will find the Auto root its quite simple not as Unrevoked but quite helpful, then I would recomend you to run stock with root a couple of days and start with Calkulin's ROM, UnNamed, and other stockish roms with goodies and then flash everything you like as kernels(Rogue Hitman, LosKernel, etc) Modems(EG30, EK02, EL29, etc) of course rooted and other ROMs (CM7, CM9, etc) and always have a backup and Odin installed in your computed

Finally Got This Phone

I used my upgrade from my Nexus S 4g and decided to come over the the S2 on Sprint. I intend to play with this phone till my wife upgrade is in August which she will take the S2 in hopes that I will get the S3 by then.
Been reading up on these posts on here and I think I got it but wanted to make sure.
1. I need to Odin to get root with el29?
2. Never flash, wipe, reset data in ICS CWM?
3. Is it me or are there no Kernels like AirKernel for this phone?
4. I plan to go with CNA as I had on my Nexus. Love that rom anything you would like to share about this rom?
Any advice on the questions would be great and to be honest I really only post here and there but I'm always on here. Been here since the release of the Evo 4G.
Thanks.
Thanks and it awesome to be a part of the S2 community. WOW.

Stoked to be here though.
Sort of asking for help, those are things that I've read up on. Just kind of a ice breaker more then anything.
Welcome to the party and congrats on the new phone.
The only question I can answer is #1, which is yes, to get an easy start just Odin sfhub's one-click EL29 for root, then read, read, read in the development section for all the goodies available.
Happy flashing and remember, if you brick your phone it's all on you.
1. I rooted just fine without Odin.
2. Yes it's also recommended you do that with most roms overall to avoid technical difficulties later on.
3. Idk what airkernel is, but there seems to be a limited choice if kernels for ginger.
4. CNA? Don't think I've seen a ROM called that around here but what do I know? I'm just a newbie...

You just have to have thicker skin over here, people may seem a little harsh at times (me included) but at the core of their comments you typically find the truth you needed. If you read around enough you'll see there are a lot of good people in this community. I'd suggest you start with the thread below to see what I mean.

Most important of all, just follow the #1 rule of thumb for the internet, don't take things personally and you'll be just fine.
Oh, also, don't expect anyone here to a)kiss your butt (well maybe iSaint j/k lol), b)hold your hand or c)pat you on your wee little noggin when you f*ck up because you didn't read and ended up bricking your phone. That is all.
Everybody moved to the Evo One. This place is a ghost town now.

Coming from a Evo then a Nexus S 4G I can't believe the trouble ones has to go through flashing roms that are ICS.
Odin is easy so that is nice but still. Seems like a lot of effort.
This phone is sweet. I just got to wait till I actually have time from work, kids and family so I can sit down and root this think and flash away.
Excited.
I can honestly say if it weren't for Odin and sfhub's one-click goodies I would probably still just be an observer on this forum. But he made it easy and then I learned to flash recovery and in doing so was able to start flashing Calkulin's custom ROMs. Although that's as far as I've gotten for now it's a long way from where I began and I'm excited for what's around the corner.

Once the source is released and official ota's are out im sure all the kinks will be ironed out. Development for ICS is still early for this phone. Using Odin isnt that bad, you can still flash a rom in about five minutes.

It may seem a bit overwhelming at first but it really is incredibly easy. Just make sure your CWM is stock (just flash CM7 or GB Miui), and then you should have no issues flashing ICS.

Not if you follow the proper directions.
Also I think everyone should invest a few bucks in "Mobile ODIN Pro" and root file explorer. Those two apps are all you need to ensure you are safe. Check MD5's and such with root explorer, and mobile ODIN pro lets you safely odin kernels, modems, roms, stock roms, etc with built in MD5 checking.

I love htc ability to to flash rom I was a flashoholc with my og evo.. Flashing took no more than 3 minutes.. This phone is extremely superior but I have not flahed a single rom since I got my phone for the same reason.. The proces seems complicated not because it's hard but because I got use to a completely different method of flashing.. I guess we just got to get used to the process

I just wanna warn you that sometimes when following an OP's instructions, you may accidentally make a mistake. Therefore I advise you first to understand what you are flashing before you flash it. I.e. in case you don't already know, learn what a kernel is, what different types of kernels are, what not to do (read the brick thread - I think it's a sticky), etc. Also, remember to always make nandroids and check md5 sums.

I completely agree with bigtoysrock, make sure you follow the OP 100% without deviation and you should be OK.
Also you may want to check out vids on YouTube by Qbking77. His tutorials and reviews have been a huge help for me, might also be for you.

I agree with both bigtoysrock and wormsign. Follow the OP 100%. I bricked the other day cuz I didn't follow it. Learned my lesson the hard way. Luckily, Sprint replaced it.
Qbking77's vids have been a huge help for me too. I highly recommend them.
guess i should have went with my gut feeling i flashed a few touchwiz roms with no probs then i tried to flask aokp and got a emmc error phone bootlooped then tried to flash back to stock with odin and get stuck on data.img guess i bricked it in one day and it isnt a sprint device i got it off craigs list and flashed it to verizon so no insurance o well maybe there will be a fix soon =(
