Hi everybody,
I've just bought my Omnia 7 (I'm glad about it btw!) and I noticed this very annoying thing: when I'm waiting for a loading video on youtube the omnia's screen goes black due to the powersaving settings.. but also it turns off the wireless so the video stops uploading!
There's a way to set the phone on keeping up the active connections when the powersave activates?
thank you
If you are talking about screen timout due to inactivity, there is no way to make it stay on forever in Samsung devices.
I have set it as 3 minutes in my Focus, and the only longer option available is 5 minutes. Try that if your YouTube video takes longer than default 1 minute to load.
AFAIK, there is no way to keep WiFi on after the phone gets locked. With 3G though, it shouldn't be a problem, no?
Hi rexian,
I realized adding more time to the timout is the only option right now...
Yes no problem with the 3G, I was just wondering about that because at home I prefer to use my wireless.
thanks for your reply

Hi everyone!
I'm using OpenDesire 4.0.4, and while it's more or less the perfect ROM for me, I'm getting a little annoyed at the WiFi. As the ROM is based on CyanogenMod, it has the same WiFi behaviour: When the screen turns off, the WiFi enters power saving mode, regardless of the apps that are active at the time, or the amount of traffic over WiFi at the time.
The problem here is that any application that's using WiFi pretty much just stops as soon as you turn the screen off.
1. Sipdroid during a call: Massive packet loss as soon as the screen turns off. You may hear a garble or two, but nothing intelligible.
2. SwiFTP and other FTP servers: Connecting to the FTP server and navigating to folders takes ages when the phone is in standby. Transferring files is more or less impossible (times out)... Everything's fine when the screen's on. If you transfer a big file and turn off the screen during the transfer, you basically pause the transer - turn the screen back on and the transfer goes back to full speed
3. Market: If you turn off the screen while a lot of apps are going to download, like after pressing "Update all" for a few apps, more often than not they'll just fail in the background.
Now, I could beg and ask the ROM developers (Kali for CyanogenMod on Desire, or AdamG for OpenDesire) to just change this behaviour, but it seems that most people are happy with the situation, as it causes the WiFi to use very little battery on standby... so I'm asking if anyone knows how I could change this myself. Is it even possible to do this at runtime without baking it into the ROM directly?
Or am I SOL until (or rather unless) AdamG or Kali takes pity on me?
I'd love to hear some input - hell, maybe I'm just doing it wrong ... Thanks in advance!
PS: Yes, my WiFi Sleep Policy is set to Never, and the Desire DOES stay connected when the screen is off. Just in a very low power mode...
-edit- Should have searched, sorry: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=752856
-edit2- Looks like there really isn't a fix for this... Anyone found a way to completely disable PSP on the Desire/Nexus WiFi?
I'm on the same ROM as yourself. What value is your "screen-off lock screen delay" set to?
In my observations, the transfer in the state you mention still persists albeit at a very slow rate and the WiFi chip is certainly placed in the LOW power state, although on.
I'm unaware of any workaround but what I use myself when transferring bulk 1-7GB files through WiFi from my PC/Laptop, which is to change the value of the screen lock delay at screen off under Settings>OpenDesire>User Interface>(last option) to a high figure, like 10-30m, depending on how long I'm expecting the transfer to take. It's a trade-off but you'll still save over 95% of the power since your screen is off but the WiFi/SD/CPU remain working as when the screen is on. Maybe you've tried this already?

That's not a bad idea... brb testing .
-edit- Didn't work
As soon as the screen times out, my transfer speed drops to nearly 0 - even with the lock delay set to 30m... :'(
OK, that's confusing. I'll be back by tonight or morning... I have much testing to do on this since for sub-20mins, my connection runs plus 200Kbps according to the PowerTutor log in such a state. Usually it would drop to 0.3-8Kbps when the screen switched off.

Mine drops to practically 0. So low that due to overhead, FTP transfers pretty much stop completely...
I've seen that the linked kernel module provides a temporary workaround for you guys now. During the course of my testing your concern I basically found my WiFi module isn't ever turning off nor switching any connections off - it's always awake and can always transfer some data. Even in the LOW state it is connected at 24Mbps. Whatever I did I couldn't change this behavior on 4.0.4. Time for another wipe...
OD has many user preferred options baked in working fine alongside the conventional options so it'd probably be best suited for a toggle of this feature to be implemented for you guys (if at all possible). Not sure if that WiFi module power state behaviour is write-able and changeable on-the-fly before a reboot, should be, as it's only changing a hardware state.

The new Wifi module is working perfectly here. No more performance problems, and my power consumption has actually gone DOWN. Probably because I have a bunch of connected apps running in the background and PSP is very inefficient for that.
Also, the delays in Chrome To Phone and Appbrain web installs are gone...
I'm loving this fix...
Anyone notice that when you have the screen off and wifi on your downloads from the browser dont continue to download? I have the same issue with dropbox exporting as well. I have the wifi sleep policy to always on (never turn off) in the settings too. Any idea?
I have noticed that also. It doesn't make sense to have the screen on the whole time you are downloading a large file though. I'm assuming the wifi never sleep setting is not working.

I have only noticed this with franco.Kernel when the Hotplug option is enabled.

Did it work?
heavy power saving kicks in when the screen is off, so transfers pretty much drop dead. You'll have to keep the screen on when transferring large files

I wish there was a way to stop this from happening. Sometimes I transfer a bunch of music from my NAS over SMB. It takes a little time. It's a pain in the rear to keep touching the screen to make sure the transfer doesn't die. It seems like "Keep wifi on during sleep" policy should fix that but it doesn't. What exactly does that setting do if not that?
My guess is that maybe it would be nice if the file explorer apps had a setting to "Keep phone awake while transferring files". I'll have to start looking into that to see if I'm just missing that setting.
I dont know why the wifi sleep policy setting doesnt work for some people. But mine does, wifi stays on with the screen off for hours. I often download large files and it works just fine leaving it idle with screen off.
sorry to hijack - slightly off topic but i lose signal when the screen is off
any thoughts on that also guys?

Me too. Noticed randomly that the WiFi started turning off when the screen was off, and it seems the sleep policy was changed automatically somehow... but I switched it back and I haven't had any issues since.

Mine was set correctly. It appears changing it, exiting settings, then re-enabling it may have fixed it.

Wifi Fixer by Zanshin-g1 once you download this app it will monitor your wifi real time and get rid of any connectivity issues when they are about to strike. I found it to be the perfect app to solve wifi issues. I hope it helps you aswell.

You could use an app like Tasker to set the display timeout to n hours if your file manager app is on the foreground. Add an exit task to reset it to default timeout if the file manager is no longer on the foreground.
Dear all,
Is anyone else experiencing the following problem?
When the phone goes to sleep mode during the night hours it wont receive any messages for whatsapp etc. It seems that it turns off the 3g connection when you turn the screen off during the night hours.
Does anyone know a possible fix for this?
I have gone through all the settings and could not find anything about this.
Cheers.
I recently got this on my Desire Z too, and I have not changed any settings on that. Then I noticed it's happening on my One X too..
no 3g late night
Hi there, i have a motorola photon. in the settings menu you can go to what is called battery and data manager. then tap on battery mode. it's default is set to nighttime saver, which will kill your syncing after 15 minutes of inactivity in the hours between 10pm and 5am. i set mine to performance mode. this will sync all of the time and i don't really care if it takes up battery since i am awake and ready to pop in a new battery off my kick a$$ battery dock wall charger!! hope this helps....

I think it's got something to do with what HTC said about "the phone learning" when you check things like mails ect.. so after it has learned that you do not check mail (for instance) during the night it disengages activies... or not
@mykeyvee, there are no such options in the stock rom on this phone.
Anyone have any other ideas?, i want everything to be synced 24 hours a day.

I don't think it's anything to do with settings. My Desire Z is on 2.3.7 and only recently have I got this bug.
My One X is stock unrooted. No settings for power saving.
Accounts and sync>sync schedule>smart sync
Is this what is effecting you

This. I woke up and my 3G wasn't even on. I had to disable and enable data again to get connected.
Same problem here. Whenever my phone is in standby mode for a longer period of time (as far as I've seen it doesn't matter whether it's during the night or day), the data connection (3g) is disconnected.
On my previous phone, a desire Z, there was a setting 'data always on' which addressed this issue. This setting however seems to be missing on all android 4 phones.
**edit:
Contacted Dutch HTC support; they claim it's a feature. Hope they restore the setting in the future..
I have noticed this too this morning.
I woke this morning and went into the battery settings and you can see the graph that all data was shut off over night.
How do we fix this.
Piss. Wondered why it used virtually no battery overnight...

Exactly same here...just as u switch on the screen....it connects to wifi or 3g instantly...

I was thinking that maybe it was just the 3g/wifi connection which was going into a sleep mode after a long period of inactivity.
I've tried increasing my mail sync at night to once in 30 minutes to prevent the 3g connection from going to sleep and disconnecting. (had it at once in 4 hours)
Now when i wake up and turn the screen on, the 3g icon is already there, and my mail has been synced last in the previous 30 minutes.
Fixed it?
Same issue here, weird thing is that I can't seem to tie it down to either a specific battery-percentage nor a specific time of the day. It's really annoying though, as I would like my device to be connected 24/7. Tried setting a mail-account for 15 min update, so will see how much wifi/3g has been on tomorrow.
Edit: Definitely not a battery issue, but rather a time issue. Battery is at 80% (used the phone little today) and 3G/wifi has been disconnected for the past 2 hours even when mail is set to check every 15 min. I can see that for many people it's not important at night, but I wish we at least had the option to turn it off :/
Possible Fix
Download this app.. Minimaltext
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.devmil.minimaltext&feature=search_result
Create a widget 1x1, under the tap behavior, select start another activity, then select an activity. Scroll now to settings, expand it, choose power saving setting..
Leave the rest default then press okay.
Click the widget and you will find some settings, including put data connection to sleep when screen is off. I haven't tried it. Hope this helps.
Not a bug!
This is not a bug, but a feature : scheduled standby mode
If on Sense 4.x, settings are similar to Sense 3.5, you should go into settings > power then scroll to standby mode. Default setting is auto, which means that the phone learns your sleeping phases and disable every wirless connections during this time when your screen is off, and enable it again automatically when you wake up (even if your screen is still off).
You can disable this feature, or (my favorite option) manually set the duration when you allow your phone to enter and exit deep standby mode.
(For me it's a great feature, as I really dislike having my phone producing airwaves close by my head when I'm sleeping. Before I went to Sense 3.5 on my DHD, I didn't have this option and had to enable plane mode before sleeping ant enter my PIN code every morning to exit plane mode, which was less convenient).
If you want to disable this, download smartsync disabler from the play store. Im pretty sure there is a thread on xda too with an app available to download.
...Or read my previous post... Market's bloatware is not needed, setting for this should be in power settings, as on Sense 3.5.
Hi.
I don't have any problems like wifi dropping while browsing at my home, college or gf's house.
But when i turn off the screen after a while (can be 5 minutes or 30 minutes) my downloads stop (big games from the store, torrents, etc). They resume after i turn on the screen.
Also messages received from email and messengers are unpredictable. For example, while writing this post, i received a notification from hangouts on my N7 5 minutes after i received on my S3. Other times i only get the notification if i turn on the screen.
The battery status and wifi analyzer show me wifi was always on.
On wifi settings, keep wifi on during sleep option is always on, like i want.
This happens on 3 different locations with 3 different isp's.
This doesn't happen with my other 2 android devices.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Let us know if you figure it out.

Did you read my post?
That option is always on like I wrote and highlighted in bold.
It seems that for a few minutes it ignores the option to keep wifi on. Any ideas?
Sounds like the N4 issue to me. Try one of the tips from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2072930
My Nexus 5X takes around 22 seconds from enabling wifi to achieve a connection.
I think this is excessive, especially when my last Samsung phone only took 4 seconds.
I use Leandroid to control wifi switching, so have to wait until I can check for emails or browse the net. At times this can be very frustrating.
The issue was present running stock and my current custom ROM, latest Pure Nexus.
So it looks like the problem resides in the Google OS.
Does anybody else have this issue?
If so, you may be interested in a workaround that reduces the 22 seconds to around 4 seconds.
It involves opening wifi in settings and is best accomplished using an automation app. I use macrodroid with the following macro
T - Screen unlocked
A - Enable wifi, Launch Shortcut Settings shortcut, Wait Before Next Action 1 sec, Press Back Button
C - Wifi Disabled AND 06:00 - 23:00
The macro opens the wifi setting screen for 1 second before it is closed followed a few seconds later with wifi connected. The macro constraints ensure the macro is only run after Leandroid has switched off wifi and only during the daytime, but you can have different constraints.
I would prefer the issue is resolved by Google but for now can live with this workaround.
Nobody having the same issue!
Suggests this might be a fault with my phone rather than a software problem.
Please let me know your wifi connect times with the ROM you are using.
Thank you
I have the same problem however I don't care about it as much as you do. Unrooted nexus 5x user here. Sometimes it doesn't connect at all if I don't expand the WiFi in quick settings.

I have this issue with my original and replacement 5X. No idea why it takes so long. I hope a mini bug fix will help it out when the new unicode update comes to us in the form of next weeks update.

My stock 5X takes roughly 12 seconds to connect to Wi-Fi, so I started doing this. Expanding the Wi-Fi in QS drops the Wi-Fi connect lag to 4 seconds or less for me. Much better experience, yet still an annoyance that I have to do this.
Edit: To clarify, tapping Wi-Fi in Quick Settings causes a severe lag of 12 to 20 seconds before it connects to my home Wi-Fi. Expanding Wi-Fi in QS cuts that time to just 4 seconds which is normal for my other devices.
