Removing profile pictures from messaging app? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I'm running Skyraider 3.5 and I was wondering if there was any way to remove the profile pictures from the messaging app? I'm running Handcent right now but want to go back to the stock sense app but I don't add profile pictures to my contacts and I'd rather not have any in the messaging app. I think it looks cleaner without the pictures.
Thanks for any help, it's much appreciated

have you tried clearing app data? you're talking about the contact caller ID picture, right? if its in the contact, it'll show up on the messaging. this picture could be from their google profile (if they're on your google chat or latitude), or facebook. idk of a way to remove it from either of those without deleting them from whatever service it's pulling the images from.

I'm talking about getting rid of the picture block itself, not just the picture.
Thanks for the reply though

oh, that'll be a no go. you're gonna have to find a different messaging app that doesn't have the picture block.

Choose Facebook profile photo for contact picture ?

Hi all
When you link Facebook to contacts it uses the generic profile picture as the contact picture. If the person/contact has more than 1 profile picture can you chose which profile picture is used for the contact in the phone. For example, I don't like one particular profile picture but like another.
The reason for my question is that my HTC Touch HD would allow you to chose which profile photo (from Facebook) is used ..
Cheers
It seems to default to the FB one over Phone one. I quite like it because it means it changes, when they change their FB photo.
You can choose between Facebook and GMail (and maybe local) picture for a contact : go to the contact details, if the contact comes from more than 1 source (GMail and Facebook) there is a little "linked" symbol on the upper right. Click on that symbol. You'll see the 2 sources. On that screen, you can click on the picture of your contact and choose which one to display.

That is the general idea but it seems it doesn't do so. My contacts have changed their pictures a long time ago 9on FB) and i still see their old photo. I can seem to trigger it to change. If i un-link them i see my google picture BUT Facebook shows the NEW picture. If i re-link the profile i get back the old picture.
Any ideea how to force it to update the bloody picture?
Thanks.
Am I right and from all the threads here Contacts is a mess on the Desire?
You might have to remove and add your account again in settings

It's not a mess, it just that it has A LOT of extra features (more or less useful) that don't work as they should.
As a basic contacts to select, search, call, message, email etc it's perfectly fine, they just tried to make it do a lot more and with some consequences.
@slybeans: well that works, but really isn't a solution.

Facebook contact pictures with Cyanogen?

I just flashed Cyanogen and so far it seems awesome, but is there an easy way to import people's facebook pictures to use for my contacts like sense has?
Also, is there a way to get sprint's visual voicemail working on it?

Scroll the the bottom of the first post in this thread. There you'll find the Sprint voice mail apk.

Thank you for that! Any ideas on the facebook?
Also, are there any other kernels besides snap that work with cyanogen? I can't seem to find a stable setup.
for facebook pictures: http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.nloko.android.syncmypix
free app that works well
facebook and twitter are syncing with contacts in cm6 now, not sure about the contact pictures. i haven't really tested it out.
contacts sync works in cm6...works fine on mine. works the best if you do first and last names in your contacts, it makes it earier for the facebook program to match the contacts

Do you have facebook contacts appearing in your contacts, and linking with regular contacts?
If for some reason a contact is using a different image than facebook, open that contact and scroll to the area of the contact with the facebook data, if you click on the picture from facebook it will prompt you to use that image
Anyway to link contacts. Every time I use a CM Rom, I end up with 600 contacts most of them doubles. One being a FB contact and the other being the actual contact stored in the Google Cloud. I love the roms, but this is very upsetting.
Yes you can link your Facebook contacts. First go into your Facebook app, hit menu and you should be able to sync Facebook.contacts.
From there, go to your contacts, select a contact, hit menu to edit contact, and you should see an option to 'join' - this will let you link your contact to their Facebook profile. Also, after linking the contact, you can choose to use their Facebook photo or leave it on their default photo if you have one.assigned.

you can only do this in a sense rom. with cm6 and facebook you can only choose to sync all fb contacts or sync only existing contacts
Thanks man. That worked like a charm!

Safe to remove messaging software?

I would only use handcent messaging, so can i remove the built in messaging app?
It annoys me that it shows on sharing lists. (plus it's running all the time)
I don't recommend deleting it. I've read before that removing it breaks MMS capabilities... Not sure about text messages.
I'd recommend you back up the APK file before deleting just in case.

Get a grip. If you remove it, messaging will stop working because the service that makes it work is part of it. Handcent is a GUI interface to the message store, it is not the messaging service.

[Q] InfiniteView.apk What is it and can it be deleted

I i want to delete InfiniteView.apk, is this needed for anything?, and what it is for, i believe is a higher resolution and animated visualization mode for the contacts, but if i want the contacts in plain mode and save space and memory, can i delete it without problems?
thanks
the the little "infinity" logo u get when u press on a contacts picture, and it shows up all of there info, like extra numbers, emails, address, stuff like that. by all means get rid of it, but u wont be able to see or edit contact details without it (i think)
No you can't, without it you wont be able to select a contact to call I believe; I removed it a few months ago and you can restore it after you remove it so I suggest you download titanium backup and then try using it.
Thanks
Yeah, it definitely messes up your contacts and stops you calling from them.

whay about facebook in infinite view, if i delete facebook, will there be unusable facebook icons on infiniteview?
You can delete anything Facebook. As long as you don't need Facebook. Before flashing any ROM I always delete Facebook stuff. You can always install the app from the market and move it to your SD card, but you won't have any integrated stuff. Or just use your browser.

i mean because i opened infiniteview.apk and saw facebook icons there, if i dont have facebook installed, does this icons appear in infiniteview somewhere as buttons or anything?
You can sync your Facebook friends' contact details to your phone's contacts. Maybe that's why there's Facebook icons in there?

Thanks, i wonder if the facebook contacts sync will stop working if i remove facebook integration and i only leave the facebook app.

Is it possible to do these things on the Galaxy Nexus?

I'm a new GNex owner, and having used other Android overlays such as HTC's Sense, I was wondering if it's possible (if there are any mods possibly?) to do:
- Link Facebook status updates with contacts
- Link Facebook pictures with contacts
If the two above are not possible:
- When setting a 256x256 picture that is good quality as a contact picture, is there a way to have it remain good quality? Every picture I assign contacts looks like crap and pixelated
Adding on:
- Is it possible to create folders in the app drawer?
- Is it possible to change the color of a new message in the text messaging application? When you get a new text it's white instead of light grey, and it's hardly noticeable which conversation is the new one.. is there a way to set the new conversation (in the message inbox overview) to say a light blue that matches the rest of the UI? Or even have a notification beside the message (where it displays all the messages) to let you know which one if the new message?
Thanks.

**I believe there is an app called hacksync or haxsync (not sure on the spelling) that lets you link up contact pics through facebook. having never used it I can't tell you if it is in the store or here on XDA. I would do a search and I'm sure you'll find it.

**Unfortunately this is a problem on Google's end. The servers they use to store contact information on have very low picture resolution. like 96x96 low. Solution: in the account settings, turn off sync google pics or use hacksync

**Neither one of these options are possible unless your rooted. even then I haven't seen a mod for adding folders to the app drawer. It could be out there but I doubt it. There are mods for changing the apperance of the stock msg app but you are limited to whatever the themer wants it to look. (I actually feel the same way about the calender ut so far I haven't seen a good replacement theme for it yet). however, if you want full control to customize your SMS the way you want, you can either download GO SMS or Handcent SMS from the store. Both offer full customization for all aspects of the application.
I hope this helps

Not to my knowledge. Definitely not in stock.

Alternate SMS apps can surely configure colors.
Thanks for the responses.
I downloaded HaxSync and it's awesome! The pictures are good quality and it shows recent activity from my contacts.
I'm going to try an alternative messaging application. If I have two messaging applications open though at the same time (does the stock messaging app run as a background process all the time?), will it slow my phone down?

It will run, and is required to fetch the messages. It won't slow anything down.
Go launcher EX allows you to make folders in the app drawer i believe.
I havent used it for a while but its a really good replacement launcher and has tons of features.
You might like that.

It'll be fine mate, just remember to turn off the notifications in the stock messaging app.

Not at all. Just disable notifications in the stock app and you're good to go with the replacement.
I'm on stock yakju 4.04 and yes, I'm able to create a folder and drag it to my app tray.
