Hello all,
So I am having a little problem with my Epic. For the past couple of days (after coming from cyanogen) my phone has been rebooting on it's own after turning the screen off. At first I was using midNIGHT Rom then I switched over to Mammon's Bonsai.. I did wipe data x3, cache & dalivik. Both ROM's are EXT4 (not sure if that has anything to do with it)
Today I experienced something different, it did a reboot & I looked on the bottom left corner and it said Safe Mode. I have never seen that before. Could this have anything to do with EXT4? Is it really messing up my phone? I was thinking about odin back to stock dk28 but wanted to see what you guys thought it was before I did so. The strange thing is... It has happened on 2 different ROM's, if it was only one of them then I wouldn't have any worries.
Also not sure if this could be the problem but I have the AOSP Lockscreen (Edify version) that pfdmedic has posted on his site. Not sure if that would have anything to do with it either. Is anybody else having these problems? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I'm not having any problems but I have seen some posts where some people are having the random reboots but never the safe mode you said. I would Odin a nice clean dk28 and just start over. Somewhere along the lines something got messed up. That would honestly be your best bet. Good luck and keep us update

Thanks! Yeah I figured I would have to odin back (don't like to... but ya know) I'm going to odin now, flash back to same ROM and update you guys.
Once again thanks for the answer!
I've seen safe mode once.
All I did was (3x clear+) reflash the rom.
Are you by chance using the aosp lockscreen. It was causing reboots on bonsai for me.

About once a day while texting, a message gets stuck "sending" and I have to reboot the phone for the message to send. I am running stock DK28 with the ACS-dk28-signed ROM. I have seen some people having this issue on Quantum ROM too. Is anyone else having this issue and on which ROMs. Has anyone had it and found a fix? I have done the wipes and resinstalls so thinking it is some cache clearing problem. Will a different Mms.apk fix it?
Thanks.
I had that poblem with viperrom. since going with Nebula, I have not had that issue, however, I hav onl had it on my phone for four days

I had Nebula for a minute this weekend but had trouble getting Sprint Nav back on and needed it Saturday morning for a job so had a massive wipefest and odin'd back to DK28 and put ACS back on so hope that cleared it up. Will see today. Still looking for a ROM with a Sprint and Samsung package included to save the hunt for all the apps.
It's a DK28 feature. I never found any pattern to what caused it, at worst I got it every 20-30 texts (or every 3-4 days for me).
Tried multiple roms and stock DK28, all do it eventually, it is just a matter of time. For some reason early Bonsai roms *seemed* to go longer before the problem appeared (weeks).
DI18 and back don't have the issue, so it is likely the modem... never tried DG27 long enough to see if it was affected.
J had that too and use update prl e everywhere I go it seems when change location its getting stock. Now it went away for now fingers cross.

What ROM are you running? Anything special on your install? Wipes? Odin?
Update: After a major wipefest, 3X each and 1X Dalvik, Odin to DK28, then wipefest, then flash ACS-signed-DK28 I am going on day 3 without this issue....keeping fingers crossed. (oops hard to txt that way)
I had this issue even on my stock phone. It seems to happen less since I flashed to sfr, but it is still annoying as hell and extremely hard on my battery life.
Anyone know of any solutions?

I found out that clearing level 2 RaM was causing it. Stopped using Program Monitor widget.
Do you BONSAI?

Ever since i went to "Swiss Cheese Samsprint" EE03, my phone won't vibrate. I'm back to ACS now, but also tried urban legend and get nothing. I've odin'd back to EE05 twice now with no luck. I even tried the EC05 that's pre-rooted to see if there was an issue with my EC05 tar.Anything else i can do or is it a hardware issue?
There was one time when it did start to vibrate again when i reflashed "Swiss Cheese" but once i rebooted, it never vibrated again. It's been weeks with no vibrate at all. Nothing else i can think of to get it to work again.

Why do you want your phone to vibrate so badly eh?? Lol, jk...
Seriously though, you mentioned how you used odin to go back to stock EE05, and pre-rooted EC05. Have you used odin to go back to perfectly stock EC05? If it doesn't work after that, I'd take it to the Sprint store and have them look at it. Vibe motors could have gone. Who knows? And since you'll be rocking the stock ROM, you won't have them looking at you funny like if you were to bring in a rooted device.
You can do so many things with the vibrate, just try it, hahaha.
Yea, i did go back to stock EC05 with no luck. But i can't stand stock so i'm back to ACS and tried flashing several kernels to see if that would help. It's odd, over the weekend i lost all ringtones, system notifications, system sounds. Basically, none of the sound worked besides media. I reflashed the twilight zone kernel and that restored the sound.
Since backing up in titatium in EE03, i can restore anything to EC05. Is that common? It could also be because i went from ext4 to rfs back to ext4.
I had a similar problem a while back. Mine would only vibrate for phone calls, but nothing else. My solution is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=13786640#post13786640
I hope it helps. Good luck!

@ the OP - is this development or a question? There is a question mark, so I would guess it goes in q&a
Wish people would start thinking before they post.

QFT.. As much as I hate incorrectly placed posts...
guy.. you have to see the irony of coming into a conversation you have no place in, stating that your idea is greater than anyone else's, and telling them about the rules... Which also state it is up to the mods to deal with erroneous posts..

just use odin with ec05 stock with everything checked re-partition and reset time. dont forget your pit file and there u go everything will be working again. if that doesnt work then the vibrate feature on your phone is broke. good luck ohh on odin pit in pit and ec05 in pda
Moved to Q&A. Don't post questions in dev
Thanks for the assistance for who provided me some. I've tried to odin back to EC05 but didn't do the pit and didn't leave all the options checked. I only checked the one i always check off.
Sorry for putting in the wrong thread. I thought since it was cause when using a leaked 2.3.3 build that i would be in the dev thread. It's not that i can't read or dont know what i'm doing. I'm stuck as i've tried what i can to get vibrate back working and haven't had any sucess.
I can't believe that there's more responses about the wrong location for the post as their is about my question. I mean, seriously, is it that big of a deal to move it.
Thanks moderator for moving the question to QandA.
You probably have gotten the vibrate motor dislocated from the board. Take a small phillips screwdriver and remove all 7 screws on rear.. Take a credit card and slide it into the crevice behind the back housing, and slide around device, popping the clips. Look for a circular medal piece with red and black wires.. Make sure it's in good physical shape. Or take it to a repair store.

I am very new with flashing a rom. I have flashed mkasick's kernal over the samfirmware release and now Toad's amazing rom. I am experiencing unusual results on both. Out side of reading the threads and watching for updates, is there something else I should be doing? I have checks relevant threads every day for the last week or so. I am beginning to think I may need a new epic. I will reodin this thing again to see if the results improve, but I have the ever discouraging feeling I may need to go back to Froyo. Stock unrooted Froyo for me had reboots and shut downs more than any other rom since but at least I knew when my phone shut down. Any suggestions to help me out would be much appreciated. Thanks!
You did it wrong. The kernel goes after the ROM.

I see my written english is just as terrible late at night as it is during the day. What intended to state was that I have flashed 2 roms in my time with my epic. First the Samfirmware one along with that amazing kernal and more recently I have flashed Toad's rom. I did not mean I flashed a kernal first (though I almost did try by accident the first go).
At this time, I am still having issues. I know this odin, like most, contain everything (as toad stated many times in his thread), but I lack confidence that I didn't miss something obvious. I flashed odin with the pit file as stated and removed the md5 extension before doing so. If any other details would be helpful to know, I would be glad to provide them.
What are the exact issues you are seeing?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Post my second Odin'ing, I have only had a few app issues. For starters the 'My Files' was gone until reboot. Upon a reboot, I had a random android icon in my app drawer that didnt correspond to any particular app and stated it was missing (whatever it was). That is it as of now. On the first odin'd usage, I had freezes where the phone would make the startup sound and even the sprint screen would flash but I could use the screen button to turn the screen on and off during this. I had other random freezes where screen would just look up on the home screen and another where I had full function, but the status bar no longer existed. Last night before I flashed again, I had some screen tearing right below the status bar. I have not been able to reproduce any of the errors, but I suppose my epic may just hate me. Thanks for taking the time to ask.
There are apps that some ROM builders take out for bloat or to make room for superuser and busybox (rooting). These may be Sprint TV, Asphalt, TeleNav and others. Once you figure out which app you are missing we can help you get it back. Some also remove myfiles but I see yours came back. This is a good reason to run Titanium backup before flashing anything. You can restore missing apps with it.
I am running Titanium as we speak. I never realized the difference between that and App Backup & Restore. Night and day there... Thanks again for the help.
I'm not sure if this has happened to anyone else..
However, this seems to be an ongoing issue with me and Android.
I've had the X10a and Nexus One .. both after only rooting it and using a different rom. While making phone calls and charging.. my phone would reboot..
Or playing a game on the phone.. it would reboot. I basically couldn't do anything without the phone rebooting. Which was sad.
Now with the Galaxy S2X.. This very same issue just happened to me moments ago.
Should I have never rooted it or changed the rom in the first place?
It was running very well before I decided to do so.. even while charging and talking on the phone.
Its funny because it just happened while charging.... I'm not even on the phone myself.
Does anyone seem to have any problem with this when using custom ROMs?
Because if this is true.. then I guess I'll flash the stock kernel and stuff back on the phone just to HOPE it doesn't occur then. :/
I've only experienced this after trying different roms and kernels. I flashed the stock kernel and the deodex rooted stock rom back at the same time and have had no such things happen again.
Imo, stock always runs better than any other rom. I always get better battery too.
My sensation was/is the same way, reboots, dropped signals and all until I put it back to stock rooted. Now it's fine.

Deebo took your bike too?
Yes I have had it more often on this phone though but it has been fixed by wiping the proper things first then flashing. If not then you might need to redownload the file.
If that doesnt work then you need to make sure that the kernel you are using is compatible with the rom
Also make sure that you are using the proper cpu software for the kernel.. Setcpu seems to work good for most but on Juggernauts new kernel they highly recommend Fauxclock .
I've run roms and kernels since we got root. Never had a random reboot or any other problem for that matter.

The only thing I'm worried about is if I continue to wipe and reinstall these customs ROM's that this issue could worsen, but you said that Fauxclock was highly recommended for Jug's Rom? I should try that out myself.
I've always done exactly what was written on the Instructions themselves.
But as for now. . I did a full wipe.. including my SD and the USB data and did a practice call for roughly an hour with me playing games and surfing. So far, there has been any problems. I hope this is perm!
I'd hate to waste another $500 phone D:
As far as the problem kernel with rom etc..
I am running Jug's rom straight. No different kernel's nothing.
I just had it happen to me last night. First time on this phone it has happened. It its stock, rooted. Happened while I was paying music in the car. My other phones with custom roms used to do it all the time.
I wonder if this has happened to anyone without ANY mods on their phone? =X

Reviving old thread... I have a completely stock S2X running 4.0.3 and it randomly reboots or shuts itself off.
I'm trying to figure out if it's a wayward app or a hardware problem. Thinking of rooting and removing the bloatware.
I also saw that it could be a faulty power button, but it also happens by itself, sitting on a desk.

I've been on ICS with my Epic 4G Touch (CREDO, but Sprint's network) for a while and I really love it however the last 2 ROMs I've used have had this problem where my phone restarts itself seemingly at random. I remember seeing somewhere that it could be because of having the 4G on too long and the phone restarts itself? This seems silly to me and I feel like it's not the problem. The most recent ICS rom I have (Blu Kuban) disables 4G at startup and I feel like this might be why. However after searching through this forum and the threads of the ROMs I had the issue with I can't seem to find any information that anyone else gets this. The CM9 Alpha 2 and 3 I tried didn't have this issue, but when I switched to Mijjah74's MIJJz BLEND FE10 and RUJELUS22's The Blu Kuban FE10 (I also tried updating to FE16 kernel and modem same problem) I get this restarting issue where my phone will be tethered to my laptop and then not. I have an updated Gingerbread rom I've been considering testing to ensure it's not my hardware however I figure I'd ask on here and if anyone had experienced similar problems and if there is any kind of fix other than turning off 4G. Thanks!!
Hot reboots have been a nagging thing ever since I started messing with custom roms. There are so many variables its not even funny. Just make sure that when you are testing its always from a clean start. Bad data, kernel issue, rogue apps - I have seen it all cause hot reboots.
You seem to have the right idea keep trouble shooting but remember it should always be from a clean install. Also you should try and fix permissions as well since that has helped me in the past.

Yeah always from a clean start (EL29 stock rooted CWM5 ----> ICS rom) I saw all those warnings, if the ROM gets another larger update I'll keep clean installing. Glad I'm on the right path. When you say fix permissions, what exactly where are you talking about? Could it be a program that's accessing part of the phone while it's locked and in the confusion my phone thinks the best course of action is a total restart? Such a silly pocket computer teehee.

Go to the market and download an app called fix permission. It fixes any mismatches with your system to keep everything running smooth. I usually do it through a custom recovery on GB. Quite helpful
