I've been having a hard time trying to get a rom to stick. I've tried Mikfroyo 4.3 and have gotten it to flash and everything seems to be working well until i have to restart my phone, then it just hangs at the white htc screen. i can pull the battery and recover a previous nandroid that is just rooted stock and everything works fine. i also tried to flash warm 2.2 and it didnt even get started. it hung at the white htc screen from the start.
from searches i've done, people seem to be able to fix this using amon instead of clockwork but im afraid to try it. i have a working nandroid and i dont want to mess that up. is there a way you guys would suggest doing this? is this even my problem? im pretty new to this, so any help is much appreciated. all of you guys are awesome.
please tell me if you need any more information.

The white screen...do you mean the splash screen?
i think that is the splash screen.
its white and says HTC EVO 4G. its the screen right before the boot animation.
Just flash it through rom manager. You want be able to use any nandroid created with clockwork though. But there is no problem changing recoveries.
Ps: you could always change recoveries while in bootloader to get back to clockwork to use your nandroid. However you shouldn't have a problem with ar. I never have, just remember to wipe and wipe again.
Nothing bad will happen if you switch to amonRA, just don't restore clockwork backups with amonRA, or you will have the world's first 4G paperweight! (brick your phone)
alright, so just go ahead and do it through rom manager?
so do you guys think clockwork is the problem?

Right, *raises hand* so, why exactly does restoring CW backups with amonRA brick my phone?
Don't they both use nandroid to make the backup?
Mind you, I did exactly what you just advised against last week, just to see if it worked, and it did.

Could be, or it might not be. No harm in using ar and flashing a new rom. Use titanium backup on your good nandroid to back up your apps. Makes flashing roms a lot less painful.

Greetings,
I searched on this, but could not find an answer:
The 3.29 update I performed (over stock 3.26) has apparently screwed up my 4G. It will scan, connect for a second, drop immediately, scan and so on...
Prior to the 3.29 I did a full nandroid backup, but I did it with Clockwork because that was what was installed by Unrevoked. I am just now learning that apparently AmonRA is the way to go?
I ask because after I discovered that my 4G was borked, I first tried to do a full restore using my nandroid backup I did of 3.26 prior to trying the update. The restore of the 3.26 nandroid was successful, but I noticed that I still had a PRI of 1.77, and the 4G still would not connect.
Is it true that clockwork does not correctly back up your wimax certs? Even if that is probably true, where is the procedure detailed to convert your wimax cert info into an image you can flash in an attempt to recover your 4G connectivity?
After spending hours on the phone haggling with Sprint, learning my local repair store does not have any replacements in stock, they FINALLY agreed to ship me an advanced exchange when I went through business care.
So, in the meantime while I wait for the replacement to arrive, what can I try to do with the Clockwork/Nandroid backup I have prior to the 3.29 update to see if I can't get it going after all?
If I can't, what is safest procedure to follow with the replacement unit? All I want is a stock 3.29 that is rooted and has working 4G. What root method should I use? How can I safely replace Clockwork with AmonRA?
Sorry for all the questions, I am just frustrated and stuck at the moment.
Thanks in advance,
-Rob
Clockwork doesn't backup WiMAX at all. Only Amon RA 1.8 does. So if all you have is a Clockworkmod backup, you're hosed.
Did you try reverting to PRI 1.34 to see if that fixes your issue?
Easiest root method for new phones right now is Unrevoked 3.21. It should be just as safe as the long manual method. After rooting, you can grab Amon RA 1.8.0 here.
Thanks for the info!
Ninja,
Thanks for the info. I haven't tried 1.34, but with a new phone on the way, I am not sure I am going to bother unless I get bored.
I am pretty sure UnRevoked will install Clockwork, so how do I go about safely replacing Clockwork with AmonRA? Do I just flash right over the top?
Thanks, just wasn't sure about that part.
-Rob
I just downloaded rom manager. It had an option to install RA and did a back up that way.

Hey, I see it has 1.8.0 now. That would be the simplest way to install it, then.
History :
Was running Fresh 3.2.00 and all was good.
Updated to 3.3.0.1 without wiping *as was instructed* and lost 4G connectivity
alltogether.
Did some investigation and found my 4G Mac to be hosed so after reading the forums I used the adb method to manually correct the mac address.
The correction was successful but 4G never came back and thanks to the knowledgeable people on this forum I narrowed it down to missing RSA keys.
I did have two nandroid backups from when the 4G was working but restoring either of them didnt solve the problem.
So, the new EVO is here (insurance) and its ready for rooting and I would love to avoid bricking my 4G again.
Please advise me on how to proceed:
1. I already found a thread on how to root the phone with stock 2.2
2. How do I take precautions - how do I backup the rsa keys as to not get into the
same situation again?
The new EVO's stats are the following:
Android version 2.2
Baseband version 2.15.00.07.28
Kernel version 2.6.32.15-g746f4f0
[email protected] #58
Build number 3.26.651.6 cl218634 release-keys
Software number 3.26.651.6
Browser version Webkit 3.1
PRI : 1.71_003
PRL: 60671
All help and feedback is much appreciated

The "old" phone after the fresh rom update somehow lost its RSA authentication keys so
I was never able to connect - authenticate with sprint again for 4G connectivity.
when you make a nand backup using amon ra 1.8.0 it will save a wimax.img, this should keep your keys intact so if you lose them again flashing this file should restore them
After rooting your EVO, flash Amon Ra's custom recovery 1.8 and make a NAND back up.
The NAND copy an image of your rom+wimax partition will retain most everything.
If you ever run into a problem like losing your rsa keys for w/e reason then you can NAND back to the copied image.

So the correct sequence will be:
1. Root the phone
2. Flash Amon Ra's custom recovery 1.8 and make a NAND back up.
3. Install custom rom.
Am I correct ?
PS: By the way, which rooting process would you use for a stock EVO that already came with 2.2 ?

youre also going to want to keep a copy of that first nand on your computer or somewhere super safe so you never lose your backed up keys
you can use unrevoked 3.21 and you can set it to install amon ra as it roots and s-off your phone, i just went through exactly the same thing.
Thanks for the help !
I just installed Unrevoked - smooth ride-
Installeld Rom Manager (Clockwork) and used it to install AR 1.8 Recovery
Doing my first Nandroid backup now.
After that, I will give Fresh 3.3.1 a try.
Awesome!!!!
Everything worked
ROM installed, I already had the latest radio and wimax on the phone when it arrived...and guess what...I am posting this while waiting on my car at the wash...over 4G!!!!!

Assuming RSA Private Keys are stored in the wimax.img (from nanadroid backup), use ARMON RA to backup your keys, ClockWorkMod does NOT backup wimax.img.
Now, best advice, DONT DO THE SAME THING, i.e., do not flash radio, wimax, nv, etc., until we ALL have a better idea of the pro/cons. Albeit the cons are plenty at this point. Root/Nand-unlock, flash away, Roms, Themes, whatever else but these.
Also, don't just do a nandroid-backup, turn right around and do a nandroid-restore, make friggin sure your backup is good BEFORE you need it.
EVO on...
Thanks for the advice, ....and I did.
After installing clockwork/ Rom Manager the first thing I did was to set it to install
AR 1.8 as alternative recovery and immediately tested it and did a full nandroid backup.
I checked the backup and the wimax.img is there.
o n o!
so your saying i need a new EVO?
I was flashing a rom and I got stuck on the bootload screen. I tried to do a nand backup and its not working. I think its because I just updated the new clockwork but didn't do a nand since I updated. Does upgrading my clockwork make me not be able to use nand done with old clockwork. Or is it anything I can do the get my phone working again.
I know Clockwork and Amon Ra nands aren't compatible, so who knows if your nand backup being from an older version recovery is the issue..
Have you tried any other roms, our just the one? If not, do the while wipe out all deal & try a different rom, I prefer Ra myself, so i can't help you with clockwork too much, but in theory upgrading it shouldn't affect your ability took flash it nan, but like I said I'm not familiar with clockwork, but I have heard it can be a bit buggy at times. As well have you tried maybe flashing clockwork again, maybe something went wrong when you upgraded... There can't be much too it, just keep plugging away, it's pretty hard brick nowadays...
Sent from my phone.
ok I fixed it. Thank you i was stressed. I mounted my usb from recovery and put a fresh rom on there and it worked.
I had my Evo (android 2.2) rooted with unrevoked forever but had to take it in to Sprint. I unrooted with the S-ON zip and then flashed the closest PC36IMG.zip that I could find on the forums. Finally, I did a factory restore and applied the OTA (3.70.651.1).
I've got the phone back now, but ever since the flash my 4G refuses to connect. I suspect I might have messed up my RSA keys.
I have a recent nandroid backup, but I'm afraid to restore it because the PC36IMG.zip updated my radios. My question is: is it safe to restore?
I'm aware that I'll have to re-root and install clockworkmod again.
I'm a long time reader, first time poster, and I appreciate your input
Heck, if you're able to re-root, it wont matter. Once you're S-OFF, simply reflash the radio, PRI, NV & WIMAX that you had before you unrooted and then restore your nandroid backup. You *should* be fine afterwards. By the way, the radios are independent of roms so it's not like your baseband, PRI, NV & HBOOT was backed up when you made your nandroid backup with the WIMAX being the only exception and that is if it was selected to be a part of the backup. Having said that, if you are not able to re-root then I would not attempt to restore a nandroid backup.

Alright, thanks! I won't be able to downgrade the hboot, but I'll give it a try nonetheless. I'm assuming that bricking the phone's unlikely as long as the downgrades themselves are successful. I'd just have to reinstall what I've got now if the backed up ROM is incompatible, right?
Edit: I've got the wimax.img in my nandroid backup
If you have the OTA, and its s-on as you said, you can't root it as of yet.

Do you know which OTA that was? I have a feeling that I didn't get the latest one, since I'm not on Gingerbread.
I did get some strange results after running Unrevoked - I have S-OFF but I get the red triangle/exclamation point when booting into recovery and I don't have root.
If you are S-Off then you just need to reflash the recovery. Once you do that you should be able to reload your nand backup.

It seems like you do not have a custom recovery flashed.
User ROMManager to install Amon or Clockwork.
As long as you are S-Off still, then you will be able to reboot into the recovery of your choice.(Didn't see you didn't have root)
Try rerunning UnrEVOked.

You don't have a recovery; http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19699565/PC36IMG.zip Download that, place on the root of your sd card, boot into the bootloader, apply update, reboot, reboot in recovery, and you'll be on Amon_ra 2.3 recovery.

I've tried UnrEVOked three times, all to no avail. Still the same result.
And yeah, I tried ROMManager + Superuser from the Market but they didn't work. Definitely no root.
I figure that I should be able to push clockworkmod using fastboot from my computer. I'm having a bit of trouble tracking down the right recovery image though.

Ah that one got posted as I was typing... thanks for the upload. I'll try it now.
It worked! Thanks teh roxxorz. Now I'll go ahead and actually get superuser, install CWM, then restore the backup and hope for the best with 4G
Update: I'm done and everything works flawlessly. Including 4G. If anyone has the same question, I can tell you that it's definitely possible to restore to a nandroid backup, provided that the radios are reasonably close to the originals.
I'm on the Mikg 2.1 + 3.0 rom, and ran into a problem trying to restore my backup after briefly trying out another rom. Using AmonRA, after restoring my backup it loads like normal but when the lockscreen comes up there is no ring or way to unlock the phone. Does anybody know what happened? Is my backup no good? Going to have to reload the stock rom to get back into my phone.
Thanks

Just flash the rom over your setup now, fastest way to fix it for right now. Or boot back into recovery and wipe cache/dalvik
I guess I will switch back to clockwork recovery since I have used it to restore my stock backup before. Don't know what happened to this backup that I made on AmonRA, but if it doesn't work I won't be using it anymore.
I'm having the same problem. I have done multiple nandroid backups with Amon_Ra that are not restoring properly...
I don't flash over anything critical, but it's becoming an inconvienience.
Are you saying that CWM is not doing this?
I hae only used amon ra after rooting with no problems. Might be a bad recovery. Just my 2cents.

All of you guys are using Amon and having restore issues.. Not something I have really ever heard of. Is it a 32gb card
After I restored I was missing market. Running deck 1.3
Sent From My Pocket
Mine is a 16gb card. I couldn't unlock the phone after restore. There was no unlock ring. Running mik 2.5
I have the same issue. 32gb card. Amon-ra. fortunately clockwork works. Unfortunately I have to use clockwork. I even reformatted and repartitioned. Still no luck
We're comin from a pure power source.
I've also restored from Amon Ra and had weird things missing.
Mistress of Mischief
holy crap im having the same issues. I did a nandroid restore with amon ra 2.3 and now even after a full WIPE I cannot get the same rom that I had restored at one point working again. Market app is missing. WTF?
Not sure what's going on exactly. However, I have noticed that's get weird restores when I wipe the .Android directory and don't back it up. That has all my sdcard programs. That winner explain the missing ring, but maybe the market.

Go to the dev section, search clockworkmod and it'll come out; the latest version is 5.0.2 I believe. You can also download rom manager from the market.
should i be able to just flash it using rom manager? I just wanna give it a try to see if I can sort this issue im having. thx everyone!
