"Locking" the keypad on my old candy bar phone made sense - if you didn't, buttons were always pressed and people were sometimes dialed from your pocket. I can also see the case for a lockscreen on the iPhone, for example, since maybe its home button can be pressed accidentally as well. However, for the EVO and for the Pre I had before it, the only way to turn on the device is via the power button up top, which is surely not going to be pressed on accident (especially with the EVO where it's only slightly raised and must be pressed deliberately). Because of this, the lockscreen serves practically no purpose, except to add an extra redundant step before using your phone. It might be more useful if it showed all recent notifications on it webOS-style, but since it only shows the most recent one, it's not very good for that either, and it isn't a big deal to pull down the shade once you're in the phone.
So, unless you actually secure your phone with a password/gesture/PIN, is there really any point to the lockscreen?
Im going to go on a guess here but the purpose of the lock screen is , in the event that the phone is in your pocket "Granted highly unlikely" the button does get pushed another process of slidding your finger down the screen to unlock would also be needed . I believe the phone sitting in a pocket or a purse or case it would be even more difficult for the sliding motion on the screen to happen . Just an extra safe guard more or less .
You can use SwitchPro Widget to disable the lockscreen if you want.
Because its part of Android and the Evo isn't the only Android phone.
...yep.

Is there an app or a way to just use the pattern lock as opposed to the slide down lock? I'd rather just have the pattern lock when unlocking rather than the swipe screen lock and then a pattern lock.
Also no lock works like a charm.

This is one reason. The other is simply because iPhone has it and it is Android competition, there is no denying that the development tries to outdo each other.
I do understand the OP's reasoning, with the build of HTC EVO 4G, lockscreen is not necessary. On the other hand, it is advised to lock your screen with either PIN or pattern just in case you lose your device. It is part of personal security responsibility.

I'm using the latest CM6 nightly ( so i have the Vanilla lockscreen ) & if i have a pattern set, that is what i see when i press the power button, & after entering the pattern, my phone is unlocked. No need to swipe before or after.
Not sure what ROM you're using, but if it possible to use the Vanilla Lockscreen, you can probably get the same result.

Stock Sense, unrooted. If you put the pattern on you first have to unlock the screen before you can do the pattern. It is pretty retarded.
My phone's screen turns on occasionally for certain notifications and alerts, and if it isn't for the lockscreen, in the 30 seconds it takes for the screen to turn off again, i can easily butt-dial someone or do something else stupid.

It doesn't do this anymore with froyo, you can change the settings so it doesn't do the swipe only the unlock pattern or vice versa.

I too was unable to get this to work. I saw no setting to disable the slick to unlock.
you would really think it would be near impossible to butt-dial someone on the EVO, but leave it to me to prove to be the exception to the rule, I had the lock screen enabled even!!! and somehow in my pocket I called the same guy like 3 times over on the drive home one day... lucky it was a good friend of mine.
Come on, we all know why: Because the iPhone had one. If every other phone didn't have a lock screen, imagine the kind of elitist harassment we'd get from the Apple camp.
"Oh, your screen just comes on? Strange. My iPhone has a lock screen. I just swipe my finger and it unlocks, it's way cool. I can even put a lock code on it. But, no, your phone is cute. I like the little robot guy."
And so forth.

May the Evo gods have pity on your soul... don't you know it gets its own front pocket, no keys, no coins, no lint, no nothing!

It may be different depending on which ROM you're running, but I was able to get the pattern unlock without the slide unlock with CM6 RC1 using this method:
- Settings
- Location and Security
- Set up screen lock
- Pattern (add pattern here)
Does anyone know how to disable the vanilla slide to unlock screen but keep something like the pattern lock on??? I've tried no lock from the market, but my pattern lock wouldn't come on. It's kind of retarted to have to slide to unlock the screen and enter a pattern lock. Thanks for any help.
btw, I'm running Calkulin's v.1.1 ROM.
Thought I'd try one more time to get it to the top? Anyone? Thanks.

I got the zip, flashed it and how I have the older slide left/right lock, still I have to do that before I get my pattern. Ugh this is a pita lol. I just want the single pattern lock when I turn my screen off.

on CM6
the PIN and PWD option presents the user with the SlideLock...then the SecurityLock then the desktop.
the ZigZag option presents the user with the PatternLock then desktop.
I'm not running CM6....are those settings found in that rom? Is there no other way to just get the patter lock and no vanilla lock???

I know you can use switchpro to disable the lock screen but I've never tried it in conjunction with the pattern lock so I don't know of it would do what you're looking for but it's worth a shot.
I use switchpro, I'll give it a go and post back.
*edit- Yep! It does exactly what you're looking for So use switchpro to disable the lock screen and when you hit the power button to wake the phone up it goes directly to the pattern lock

Is your lock screen the Sprint slide-down lock or the standard/vanilla lock? I ask because, with Switch Pro, it either unlocks both, or enables both (with the Sprint HTC slide-down lock).
Thanks.
didn't worked on Xperia x10 =(
Just wanted to add that disabling the lock screen with switch pro is awesome. I can't believe I never found that before.
Also, if you want to have ur volume buttons wake ur phone, try widget locker. Enable widget locker, then enable any hardware button wake, then use switch pro to disable screen lock then disable widget locker. Bam, volume key wake w/o lock screen, pure awesomeness.
Hey... I think this thing makes phone calls too!
I also have the Nexus One and use the app No Lock to wake my screen rather then use the power button all the time. That app does not work on the G2. There is also another app called widgetlocker that works on the Nexus One but does not work on the G2, use both of those on my Nexus One. Does anyone know of an app. that can wake the screen by trackpad, volume or camera rocker???
Thanks,
Vinny
I'd love a solution to this. With CM on my Nexus one for so long, It's second nature for me to just push the trackball twice to wake and unlock my phone. I can't stop doing it on my G2.
Can I get some damn custom ROM goodness up in here, please?!
What do you mean widget locker does not work? It works for me, just press any hardware button and it wakes. Even the trackpad (which I use all the time). Try playing around in the settings
I used to use widget locker on my nexus one, but it was buggy as hell and only worked half the time. It would either not wake, or for whatever reason default back to stock lock screen. Have they fixed these issues?
does widgets locker work on g2?

I have tried using different set ups with no luck. Use it now on my Nexus OOne and it works great. I just can not get it to respond in my G2. Is you're G2 rooted? I have not rooted my G2 until the OTA update comes (if it comes). Any input you can give me would be very appreciated.
Vinny.
WidgetLocker works great on my G2
i mean the function to wake up the phone with any press on any button on the phone. does that wake up option work? because i tried it once and it didnt.
Ok. Just installed and tested WidgetLocker on my G2. I am temp rooting on boot with the current r8 version of Visionary from the market.
The Trackball Unlock setting works to unlock the phone when already at the unlock screen.
The Easy Wake mode did not work even when I also enabled the Root bypass of Five Seconds and used the HomeHelper launcher
So even when rooted, you can only unlock, not wake the G2 using WidgetLocker.
To me, it's useless.

That is the same result I had with widgetlocker. I'm looking for the ability to wake the phone up when the screen goes out. I use to use widgetlocker on my Nexus but instead of sucking up all that memory with it I changed to nolock. Uses very very little memory and trackball or volume key will wake the phone without being rooted. Nolock does not work on the G2. That is an app I would pay for.
Is there a way to remove the stock lockscreen?
Here is what I have currently:
Rooted with UnNamed Rom, using No Lock app. I also have WidgetLock just in case.
What happens:
Phone will randomly go to the Stock Touch Wiz Lockscreen during any application (NetFlix, Pandora, texting). It is pretty annoying, and sometimes the phone will pull up the dialer when I didn't even press anything.
I thought I could simply remove it on Titanium Backup but I cannot find what the actual name of the TW lockscreen is named.
Any suggestions?

Well the thing is tho, I'm pretty sure if you disable the lock screen you keep your phone from sleeping. That's actually an option you can choose from inside widget locker, its called wake lock. But if your phone isn't gonna sleep, the battery will drain continuously. Plus, any button will turn the screen on. But then again, im not 100% sure.... just mostly sure

Does anyone else have some knowledge on this?
If what hijewpositive says is true, that really stinks to have such a big design flaw on this phone like that.
If you go to your keypad and put in *#7594# Check box to enable and press home button. It will disable the lock screen. If you want to use the lock screen again repeat and uncheck box. Hope this is what you are looking for.

Hmm, I've been getting the phone dialer pop up on UnNamed ROM also but only when I unlock the screen. Always thought I might of hit the phone dialer by accident, but this has occurred multiple times on UnNamed, but absolutely zero times before. Wonder if there's a bug?
Also, I use Go SMS which has a pop-up feature which prevents the lockscreen when an SMS comes through; phone still goes to sleep and no battery drain (tested it by leaving the popup on for half a day and using betterbatterystats, battery monitor, and cpu spy)
I use 'no lock' app. Never had a problem with it.
yeah, i know i have an issue, so clarifications aside, y really really heate to touch the power button to lock the phone, so i tried the accesibility icon/menu to lock the phone without physical contact, but i really think unfortunatelly is a joke.
I sooo much miss the OP launcher feature to double tap home screen lo lock the phone.
i know is my thing, i know is me afraid of the button to break, and taking into consideration that i give intensive use to the phone, that was always a concern i had, which disappeared the five years y used OP.
Can some one please give me some comfort words about using the physical button or adice me a good app to easily lock the phone.
thanks to everyone in advance
Rooted, I use CleanSlate custom kernel's S2S (Sweep to Sleep) to lock the screen and turn it off. Works everywhere including the lock screen.
The kernel doesn't even require root for most of it's features, just need an unlocked bootloader and follow the directions to flash it.
I use Nova launcher and use the to double tap to lock feature.

The only problems with that are: 1) that it only works on the home screen (and if you have a spot void of icons to double-tap in), and if I remember correctly (correct me if I'm wrong) 2) if you're not rooted, then its only choice is to use accessibility services to lock the screen and turn it off - but the caveat of that is that to unlock then requires your primary method to unlock (pin, etc) so the fingerprint reader won't be able to be used to unlock when you've locked with that option.
With root at least, if you have Nova's root option chosen to lock, it's then a normal lock so you can still use the fingerprint reader after to unlock.

Just remember that you don't necessarily need root for that. Only an unlocked bootloader so that you could flash it, although unlocking the bootloader, if you don't already have it unlocked, will factory reset your device. Just making sure you know your options.
I swear by Nova Launcher Prime, too - I just like to be able to lock from any app and screen that I'm on, plus I find it works more reliably in the kernel.
