Phone got wet, now boots into black screen and no response

Title sums up my problem. I've got a T-Mobile Touch Pro 2 and I've got some water on it a few weeks ago. The wet seal on the battery and phone are both pink. I got a new battery and now the phone boots. It goes through the pink little T-Mobile screen, and then onto the black screen that says the phone wasn't shut off properly and this and that. It gives me the option to press the Volume-up key to do a hard reset, or press any other button to turn off or restart. The problem is that pressing volume-up, or any other key does not do anything. In fact, the only way to turn the phone off at this point, is by taking the battery out.
Can somebody please advise as to what I can do with this phone that is only 2 months old?

I believe the life/fate of your phone will depend on how quickly you acted right after the phone got wet. For instance did you immediately remove the battery and place the phone under a light or in a window where it could dry out? I even here sticking the phone in a bag of rice will help to draw out moisture. But if the phone has sat for weeks I would say it's safe to assume you phone has seen its last days. If you can take it apart and leave the individual components out to dry out and clean off any corrosion with alcohol and re-assemble. I wish I could offer better advice... Edit: Sorry I didnt realize you said that the screen does display. I would definitely try taking it apart and thoroughly cleaning things out and leaving it apart to dry for awhile. sending it in will get you no where (since pink water marks) and chances are HTC/T-mobile wont even send your broken phone back.

You could also try connecting the phone to your pc, and run mymobiler. When the screen goes blank, maybe you will be able to have access to your phone through the program. You could back up whatever you needed, and would tell you if the lcd went out. Just a thought. Sorry to hear about that though.

Mymobiler says that it needs activesync functional in order to work. Activesync doesn't work for me. I tried it anyway and it wouldn't detect. Is there a stock htc touch pro 2 rom out there that is in NBH format so that I could stick it on my SD card?

The very same thing happened to my Touch Pro 2 a few days ago too!
My story is different. I had never had any water damage to the phone. On the 23rd of March, I installed the Deepshining ROM. It worked fine. The next morning, I went into T-Mobile to get the new HTC HD2. I turned off the Touch Pro 2 to retreive the SIM card, and then have been using the HD2 since. I tried to turn on the Touch Pro 2 for a few nights now. It just stays at the T-Mobile Stick Together screen until the battery is dead. I tried a soft reset while it was stuck on that screen, and received the error message just like the OP.
Can someone help me too? I am really worried that the phone is bricked. I can't get a new Touch Pro 2 under warranty since I am running on a custom ROM/radio.
I'm not sure if I can blame Deepshining. None of my previous ROM installs ever failed on me, and people seem to be installing the roms just fine.

Are you trying to conquer my thread? It's nice and all that you've got the same problem, but thread hijacking is frowned upon.

Sorry, the phone is physically damaged. There's not much you can do at this point.

Just as an update. Somehow, after installing the deepshining mod and trying it after a few days, it works fine now. It became very responsive, and I was able to install the original tmo 6.1 stock rom. Everything works fine, the only problem is that some of the physical qwerty keys either don't work or draw more than the needed letter/number. The power button doesn't function to turn the screen off, which really is about the only bummer. Everything works fine. Yay.

I've had my phone on for about 2 weeks straight, because a friend told me its better to just leave it on. Well, yesterday while in the music app, it just went right into the startup animation. No bootscreen, just the animation. Now I noticed my phone was somewhat sluggish and decided I'm just shutting it off for a bit. Well, that's not going to well. It will not shut off. YES I HELD THE POWER BUTTON THEN POWER OFF. even with a battery pull it turns on right when the battery is in. I also noticed that ky ringtones and some settings don't restore after reboot and that sometimes I need to hit the keep button multiple times to wake it. Is this a software issue or hardware..... and if I need to return it, how do I remove the root? Or will they even notice? Could this be related to the root?

I had the exact same issue. What I figure happened was that in the process of rooting (plugging USB cable in/out so many times) a pin probably stuck itself high or low in the connector and caused the behavior you're experiencing now... that's just my theory though, but whatever it is, it's hardware related... so don't bother flashing the RUU and losing root over it -- I did and I kicked myself for it. What I ended up doing was exchanging my phone for another one and after two tries finally got one with a screen that wasn't pink -- in fact it was even slightly better than the original one I had.
If it's a dealbreaker for you not being able to turn off your phone, then by all means replace it. Just keep in mind you might have to swap out more than once if you're picky about refurb quality. Just my 2cents.
As for how to get rid of root, look over one of the RUU threads and download one... when you run the *.exe it extracts a bunch of files to your temp directory. Look for and rename rom.zip to PB31IMG.zip, copy it to your SD card root, and boot in fastboot and let it update from it... result = stock incredible again. Got that trick from:

Edit: I only had the reboot after shutdown issue. Anything else sounds like something that could be fixed with a data wipe (that won't get rid of root). What I'd do now that there's a custom recovery, is make a nandroid backup just in case, that way if the data wipe doesn't work for fixing the setting sticking issue, at least you don't have to reinstall everything back and can just restore the backup.

See, this is exactly why when I was trying to root, I was pulling the cable at the PC end, not the phone end. MicroUSB is a lot flimsier then regular USB. Be careful guys... Oh, and I WOULD reflash just in case. They might give it to a tech to troubleshoot if this is software related, and I guarantee that he'll notice SuperUser.... .02$ deposited.

Right on all counts, I have a usb extension cable the plug/unlug the DI with now. MicroUSB was loose out of the box--me no likee.
As far as sending the phone back with unusual software--I doubt HTC is gonna narc on you given the huge demand for DIs. It's always better to play it safe, but I haven't ever heard of a user getting a warranty claim bounced for rooted software installed, and I've been in the android game for a while now.

I'm not saying this will work at all, but....
If you're experiencing these things with USB plugged in... Unplug USB, and take out Battery.... Let it sit there for 30 seconds....
( I THINK that the "pins" are only for video out. If I'm correct, the "usb" part of it is actually a plate on the phone, and the pins are in the cable)
Once you put the battery back in, try using the phone w/o usb plugged in... if it behaves normally, replace USB cable. (Unless I missed something in your orig. post.)

Also, before you return the phone, do a hard reset and see if it fixes it (there is a slight chance it's software related.... obviously, you will lose everything, but whatever is backup up to goog. When you rooted, did you delete/remove any APPS at all?)

Ugh.... I do not want to return it. I hate refurbs. If i return it, is there a chance ill just get a new phone? Aside from that, i think i can confirm its hardware, more specifically in the usb port. I plugged in the charger and now it turns off fine. Annoying as hell, but i think im just keeping it. And after looking more i see that the screen never actually turns off, it just pauses then turn back on. I havent noticed and horrible side effects and maybe a reflash would help me. I never shut it off so ill deal for now.
Now if i want to do a nandroid backup, do i need to be in hacked recovery or will it work immediately? and can it be copied to an sd card and restored to a refurb if i got one?

[Q]DHD first was in safe mood and when I decided to reboot it it didnt power on

Hello,
Since short time ago, maybe like 10 a 15 mins my DHD was in safe mode, I don't know why at all and have always treaten my DHD with love.
So after I saw the safe mode I decided to reboot and after since I did that then phone doesnt seem to want to powerup, the syptom is like following, when I press the power button I will hear the phone vibrate twice and then the green led will burn and the phone doesnt seem to do anything.
So I have removed the battery and tried to boot in recovery mode with holding down the down volume button and and press the power button, this had no effect at all.
I hope someone could help me, I hope this is just temporary and that I do not need bring him in for warranty, I have rooted the phone and run RCKingdom 3D on it.

I put full battery inside, now the red led blinks, before I get first the same 2x vibrate.

Okay I just got in recovery mode, but when I reboot it via recovery mode i'm back with the same.

After pressing volume down and power button, I saw the RCMix3D boot screen, and now i'm back into the normall mode. Someone still explation for all this? It rained today and there got some rain on my DHD, but not much, but you can't really avoid that.

I changed the battery because I need charge my spare batterys and again problem with the vribate, but this time after few time trying with volume down and power button I get into my phone again.

It might have been water damage. It probably just needed some time to dry before working again. Other than that I have no logical explanation.

Yes thats what I though to, but something funny was that rain drops on screen seemed to enter letters, but well I think you might be right that it was water damage and just needed to dry, I think there nothing you can do to prevent your phone get wet when it rains, but I will not use it much during rain.
Lets hope this will not happen again, I love this phone to much for it.

Its defintinly no water damage, I'm in ClockworkMod Recovery now and my volume down button doesnt seem work corretly, when I wanna go down it doesnt react, but go up it works.
I think I gotta contact HTC and if I send it for warranty then I gotta restore it so that bootloader is back to S-on because I understand you don't get warranty when you have a unlocked bootloader.

So I have figured out what's wrong with my phone, the down volume button just hangs and its quite serious.
As i'm able to get in quite hard I should get back to orginal firmware and get S-off from my phone and get it for warranty.

well i didnt really follow the link. but if it involves a usb cable and a ruu .exe it will get it back to stock. still sounds like water damage though. check inside the doors and make sure none of the sticker have changed colors. including the one on the battery.
can also try putting a paper towel on a flat clean hard surface. phone screen down on the towel. and giving a couple good whacks in the general area of the volume button. maybe pop the battery door off first so it dont get damaged. as long as you dont physically damage it, your not out anything but time tryin this. if it dont work you was gonna go through the warranty process anyways.
dont blame me if you go overboard and break something.

I reverted back to stock and putted S-on back. I called HTC already and they will take it into warranty tomorrow they will come and get it.
I got battery out and I see on white sticker with a little black sticker on it with saying void, also sticker on battery is still white, so no signs off water damage at all, and it looks the volume button just hangs.
Its still under warranty and its almost impossible that it get water damage from some rain drops, even when you call the screen will get some sweat on it so it couldnt be water damage.
I have heard damage issues like these with phones more often.

Its a mystery but phone works suddenly good again, the volume down button works good again, react when I press it and phone boots without problems, I'm happy for it because in case it was water damage then it costed me € 40 and as far as I heard the phone fixers in my country will say its water damage even if it isnt so i'm really realeved.

Hi, I have looked everywhere to try and get this problem fixed, but haven't found anything to help.
I have a HTC One X which is absolutely stock. I got it on contract last September and have never rooted it/played with it/etc (I wouldn't know what I was doing!). My problem is that it is on a boot loop and I cannot get it to to get beyond the first HTC splash screen. If I hold down the volume down button to get to the boot menu then it runs for around 1.5-2 seconds then reboots again. The details below show where it gets to.
I contacted my insurance company and sent it in and they have told me that the phone has been water damaged and they will not fix it. I am covered for water damage, but as I didn't declare in my insurance form that this was the cause for the failure they will not accept responsibility! The thing is that while I accept that I have used my phone in the rain on a number of times (I'm a keen walker despite the weather), I have never immersed it in water. I can only assume that the indicators have come up because I've used the phone while out walking in the rain. Despite what I say they will not fix the phone and HTC don't want to know because of the indicators, just referring me to my insurer as the water indicators are red. I am obviously hacked off, but surely if the screen isn't a problem and it's booting this far then surely I can get the phone to work?

When I try to charge the phone it just enters a boot loop, lasts about 4/5 seconds then reboots, so I can't see how to get it to do anything else. This means that I cannot flash it/link it to my pc/etc.
Can anybody help me get the phone back up and running so I don't use it as a frisbee?! I am still under contract until September 2014 and would hate to think that I've got to pay for a phone I can't even use!

That will allow you to charge it to 100%, even though it cant boot.
Next, did you expose it to water, or is the insurance company BS'ing? What happend when the bootlooping started? Any updates (On The Air) that caused it, or anything?

The phone is not holding any charge at all. I left it to charge for 6 hours yesterday to try and get somewhere with it, but the whole time it was on charge it was rebooting itself and when I unplugged the charger then it booted twice more and gave up as the battery was flat. I assume it was using all of the power coming in to reboot as it went.
I can remember about a month ago that I did have my phone in my hand and I was texting through quite severe rain, so yes, I assume it must have been then that the indicator marks came up. It has worked fine since until this episode last week and it just seemed to die on it's own. I was sending a text at the time, the phone froze so I tried to reset it (power and volume up) and it just boot looped after that.
I'm not aware of any updates in the last week or so; and the phone is rebooting by itself. Even if I leave it for 24 hours then moments after plugging in the chager it tries to boot, lasts a few seconds til the HTC logo screen, then stops and reboots.
I cannot get the phone to link to my PC. As soon as my computer begins to recognise it then the phone reboots and it disconnects from the computer. This rules out the possibility of adding in the .rar file.

Ok, what is 'this episode last week'? The sudden freeze or? And when you connect the charger, does it turn on by itself?
While in the bootloader menu, do you have time to ask the phone to turn off? That way it can charge while off. But if it does not hold battery AT ALL, I think it's a new phone....

Last week was when the phone froze.
I cannot get the phone to shut down, it doesn't give me long enough. Plus, when plugged in the phoje tries to boot without me trying to turn it on, which isn't good either.
I really like(d?) My phone, should I just accept its gone and move on?
My son's old Wildfire is driving me bonkers this now!

Well, I would say it's toast.. From the given status of the hardware i see no way to recover, without involving a technician. But with water in the game it can be hard to pin down the reason for the behaviour.. I would say the main print since it turns on and off by itself..
Have you tried drying it, and for how long has it been this way? Also, do you have the guts to open up the phone for a diy fix?

Hi,
I am in the process of appealing with my insurance company. Their case is that I didn't disclose all the material facts, but I am of the opinion that if it was water damaged at some point, then it has worked for weeks before it decided to play up, so that cannot be the reason. I did put the phone in a sealed box of rice and placed that in the boiler cupboard for 3 days when it was returned by the insurance co. When I took it out it was exactly the same as before. The phone came out on Monday of this week.
I'll wait for the result of my appeal before I pull it apart. Not entirely sure what I would do once in the case, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it!

Sounds like a plan, post back I have *NO* experience taking these things apart though.

If you need to take it apart its not that bad. I had to dismantle mine when my sons drink spilt all over it and it started rebooting and went into safe mode before I could turn it off. There are videos on youtube to show you how. However if you have dried it as much as you say I am not sure what you can do once in there
Water got all around my SIM and volume controls but all ok once dried out.

Thanks herbie. I should hear back from my insurance company regarding the appeal I made over the next day or two. Fingers crossed I wont have to resort to pulling the phone apart. Pretty sure that the board is fried, so not sure what I would achieve anyway.
I've still got the phone and have had it in the boiler cupboard again inside a box full of rice, so if nothing else, anything that may have been in there will be long dried up by time I hear back. I'll pull it out after they get back to me.

Guys, just want to thank you for your time on this one. I've had a letter through this morning accepting my appeal. They asked me to get a letter from my network confirming that the IMEI of this phone was in use up until the date I said and I sent this in, and I sent this on.
I've just called them and they said that the phone was unrepairable and I should expect contact within 3 working days with either a replacement being sent out (reconditioned phone) or a cash payment to buy a replacement.
Just a few more days with a 3/4 year old HTC Wildfire then back to a speedy One X (or One if they make a cash offer!).

Sorry for bumping the topic, but I had the same problem.
The power button was broken, and was constantly pushed in. The device rebooted all by itself, and couldn't charge.
I replaced the power button and it all works like a charm right now!

I don't think there was any issue with the power button, but it would make some sense. I did ask what they found to be wrong with the phone and the lady on the phone just said it was unrepairable.
I called again today and I've been told to expect a white 32gb One X to be coming my way (again within 3 days which seems to be their standard response to anything!), so glad it's all over. Hoping to get my wife to take it on to replace her white iPhone 4S which is coming out of contract in a couple of months as she's after something faster and I'll get the new HTC One, but not too confident of pulling that off!

No, my buttons weren't flashing at all, if you try yourself, they aren't flashing too.

[Q] Power Issue on Note 3

I was looking and looking for a thread with a similar issue before posting but I had no luck.
My issue is that when I turn off my Note 3 I have a really hard time getting it to boot back up. This happens every time every single time I shut it off. I hold the power button for about a minute with the battery removed to supposedly drain any power as I've read around but that doesn't help. I'm pretty tech savvy and internally the phone looks perfectly fine. The weird thing is that I don't actually have any issues once the phone is up and running to make me think it's a hardware issue. It charges fine, I get data, S pen is fine, no other issues what so ever. I haven't been able to pin point what I'm doing to bring it back but eventually it does end up booting like normal. I try to pull the battery multiple times with no success. I eventually get frustrated and just leave it alone with the battery removed. When I return it boots up just fine.
Anybody else having this issue or heard of it?
Forgot to mention that the phone is stock. I don't have it rooted or a custom rom installed.

Thats weird. Have you tried reseating the SD card. Sometimes it might bethe memory card.

Why turn it off?
Just let it sleep. I can't remember when I ever turned my phone off.

Well my phone's back camera was broken and I was replacing it. Although the issue started occurring well before replacing the camera.

Im having same issue. Replaces camera now phone wont turn on. shows chargering though.

I noticed you also have a thread which states the same thing and I'm not sure if you figured it out yet, but just out of curiosity did you happen to ground yourself while you were working on your Note 3? This goes for any device in general but it's pretty amazing how much damage the static electricity from just your clothes can cause if you're not grounded while working with an exposed main board. If you weren't grounded while working on it though it also doesn't mean that something automatically happened, I'm just saying it's always a possibility at least. One thing I would try if you're having problems powering it up even just in general, is to make sure it's plugged in and charging first and then hold the volume up and power buttons down together at the same time (and keep them held down) until you feel a vibration and then let go. It will take at least 10 - 15 full seconds (and sometimes even longer) to happen, but that should usually get it to power it up whenever it's being stubborn. Another thing I'd definitely check, especially if it was working fine before disassembling the phone, is the alignment of the power button itself (the button you press with your finger) and the actual power button which is located behind it on a data ribbon that connects to the main board. It's actually kind of a flimsy setup so whenever you reinstall the back frame plate you have to make sure the power button data ribbon doesn't shift, or it can cause all kinds of weird problems when trying to power on or off the phone. I hold the power button for about a minute with the battery removed to supposedly drain any power as I've read around but that doesn't help. I'm pretty tech savvy and internally the phone looks perfectly fine. The weird thing is that I don't actually have any issues once the phone is up and running to make me think it's a hardware issue. It charges fine, I get data, S pen is fine, no other issues what so ever. I haven't been able to pin point what I'm doing to bring it back but eventually it does end up booting like normal. I try to pull the battery multiple times with no success. I eventually get frustrated and just leave it alone with the battery removed. When I return it boots up just fine.
Anybody else having this issue or heard of it?
Forgot to mention that the phone is stock. I don't have it rooted or a custom rom installed.

I just mentioned this in my response to someone else in this thread, but it actually sounds like yours has the same kind of alignment issue with power button that I was talking about. I'm not sure if you've ever disassembled yours for any reason or not, but even if you haven't it's still totally possible that it could've happened from the factory and especially if you got a refurbished phone for whatever reason. It's a pretty poor design choice in my opinion because it's such a "fragile" setup, and even the slightest misalignment of the power button itself and the button on the data ribbon can cause the exact same problems your having. Anyway if if you haven't messed with it and it's still under warranty I'd say just get a new one, but if you have taken it apart I'd say first thing to check would be the alignment of those buttons (once you take the back off). I've even had to make a tiny little "shim" and wedge it behind the power button on the data ribbon in order to get it to line up right with the button itself a couple of times, so I'd say it's a fairly common problem with these phones.
