pershoot vs virtuous kernel - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I just recently went from the villainromz to the virtuous rom. Now i have a few questions about whether i should use the viruous kernel or the one from pershoot. I know the pershoot goes up to 1517 mhz whereas the one from virtuous only goes up to 1497... But i am more interested in the differences regarding battery life, overall performance and memory usage.
Another thing I would like to know is the difference between governors. I honestly don't know what the difference between the different governors is, in virtuous you have interactive and smartass and ondemand and the others. But whats the difference between those 3? Which one is the more interesting choice to use?
Sorry for my english, i'm from belgium so there might be some bumps in my writing
cheers

Here's an explanation of the various governors: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=843406
I would recommend that you use Virtuous kernel unless you have major problems with it. It was developed specifically for the Virtuous ROM, so it's most likely to be the best fit.
That being said, I know some are using Pershoot's kernel with no issues, either. Note that if you use Pershoot's kernel, you need to use the one *specifically built for Sense ROMs* (i.e. NOT THE ONE IN PERSHOOT'S THREAD). The Sense ROMs require certain features in the kernel for things to work properly (such as Bluetooth, RM radio, WiFi hotspots, etc).

Also... Wrong section But my favourite govoner would be Smartass then Ondemand

[Q] CFS/BFS Clarification..

I have scoured the intarwebs and I have briefed myself on these beautiful kernels.
Now this may be a noob question, and I apologize ahead of time for it..
BFS Kernel #5 & CFS Kernel #7
Are the two aforementioned kernels an Either/or type deal ? or can they be flashed together ( one after the other)..
This shows how much i know about kernels..... Can there only be ONE kernel in a ROM ?
Please help..
Thank you,
John
Only one kernel at a time, and you can flash one or the other. The BFS stands for "Brain **** Scheduler" and these kernels also include HAVS (hybrid adaptive voltage scaling) to increase battery life by regulating the voltage sent to the processor when commands are sent to it (or something like that). These kernels are newer than the non-BFS ones. I started running a BFS kernel on Saturday and am very happy with it. I just flashed #5 over #4 today and it is also working well. I was reluctant to try a BFS kernel because I was quite happy with the way my phone was running previously, but my curiosity got the better of me. I do notice a slight improvement in battery life with the newer kernel.
Hope this helps.

[Q] Undervolted Kernel?

I was wondering if their is a undervolted kernel for the G2. If not would any developer like to make one? I would be willing to test/host and kernel.
Thanks,
macfan74318 (not a spammer)
Check the development subforum. There have been a number of kernels available for quite some time. I know at the least that Pershoot's is undervolted (that's the one I use and is a popular option for people running CM6). You'll have to check the thread's of the other kernels to see if any of those are undervolted (I know most were focused on overclocking).

[Q] what is a kernel?

I know this is a really noob question, but what is a kernel? I see them all over the developer section when i look for roms, but i have no clue what it is (sorry if this is a bumped thread).
I also wanna know cuz i would like to use the right kernel to my incredible....

A kernel is the bridge between the hardware (for example processor, memory, nand) and the software (the ROM). This is why changing the kernel can have such a huge impact on battery or speed. For example, one kernel can tell the processor to work its butt off, which decreases battery, while another will tell the processor to relax, increasing the battery life but decreasing speed. Since every processor is made from different silicon, not every kernel fits all phones.
Also, in kernels another important thing is the task scheduler. The Brain **** Scheduler (BFS) basically has ups and downs in performance but the Completely Fair Schedulare (CFS) is pretty much consistent in performance. It's hard to explain. I personally prefer BFS over CFS. Also, if you want higher quadrant scores, use BFS.
Hope this helps.
Thank you so much!
AOSP or Sense - it matters to the kernel
Noteworthy when flashing a kernel -
AOSP ROMs require AOSP kernels, Sense requires Sense kernels.
Same story with Froyo or Gingerbread ROMs, either AOSP or Sense.
Bootloops happen when they get mixed.
Great explanation, thanks- I was too embarrassed to ask, so I used the search...and here it was! finally I have a clue

[Q] suggestions on kernel for speed and performance?

hey guys. i'm trying to find the kernel review thread with no luck.
I switched roms (i'm on MetroPCS so using the latest MetroDroid rom) and Im finding the kernel slow. I use setcpu profiles and I notice a slight delay in response that wasn't there before.
I also benchmarked using Quadrant and setcpu set to performance at 1190/1190 and got 1083! much lower than any score i've had in the past.
what's the newest and greatest sense kernel for improved speed and performance? I have the seidio battery and always near a charger, so i'm looking for snappy performance over squeezing 15 minutes more out of the battery.
thanks!
P.S. this is a Sense-rom but 90% de-Sensed. I just prefer the look and feel of Sense after I modify my way over others.
Ziggy's (ziggy471.com) always run faster than Netarchy's for me, but you're going to have to try a few for yourself as every phone reacts differently to diff kernels.
Netarchy's Kernels & Ziggy's Kernels
nets out with his 4.3.4 and has hdmwin built in also has the kernel guide in there.

[Q] Ziggy Kernel?

On the piggy website, I'm unclear which kernel is for my incredible?
The kernels meant for the incredible have "-inc-" in their title. I believe the most recent ones end with "-041011".
holy crap there a lot of choices. Any guidance? I don't see anything listing descriptions of anything.
This would likely suit you best:
http://www.ziggy471.com/2011/04/10/beta-kernels-10-apr-11/
Ztest-INC-BFS-HAVS-041011
has brain f*ck scheduler and HAVS for custom voltage set. note this is his latest kernel release but it is also labeled beta. So if you have any weird issues with it you may want to check out an earlier release.
-- As always I have to jam in my favorite kernel (chad's incredikernel) if you haven't tried it out yet then I can only suggest that you do.
Cheers

In going back and forth, I've personally found the performance of Chad's 12/23 kernel and Ziggy's 4/10 kernel virtually indistinguishable. Some devices don't respond well to the hybrid adaptive voltage scaling (HAVS) or the settings he's implemented and will be more stable using static voltage scaling (SVS), which is the standard kernel. IncrediControl works on this Gingerbread kernels so I'm assuming it would work well on his Froyo kernels for adjusting the voltage without a script. Any decent clocking app will handle the speed. But the script guide he has is very useful and might be worth playing with if that's your thing. If you have any questions for him, he's best found at infectedrom.com these days.
Wow thanks! I enjoyed scripting on y Eris so I will look at that
Since i have everyone here, is there a stock rom that has all that blistered removed? I can adb shell and remove the stuff but I was just curious.
