anyone have an evo with a bad esn? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

im looking for a development phone so i can work on more of my themes without having to flash them to my main phone. also looking for a decent price as well. thanks !!!

anyone?
10char

Damn.....these phones are selling for hundreds with a bad ESN on eBay. Incredible.

That's because people are flashing the Bad esn phones to cricket

hmm? anyone?

I think anyone on XDA with an Evo with a bad esn is likely smart enough to get top dollar for it or reflash it to another provider themselves....

Pardon my noobitry, but what does it mean for a phone to have a "bad esn"? Just one that the Sprint network won't recognize?

pretty much, typically because the device was reported lost/stolen

It is a phone that has ether been reported lost or stolen or one that sprint will not turn back on due to no payment on account there may be more ways but that is the main ways

Make an EVO 4G look like a 3g phone

I might be getting an EVO 4G as a warranty replacement for my hero and I live in Milwaukee, WI with no 4G service.
I need to know if anything on the evo goes out and says its a 4g phone other than imei/esn. If so what and can it be disabled or blocked?
Im sorry if this is way out of line. I just trying to gather information at this point.
Lol
As soon as you turn it on, Sprint makes sure you know it's 4G.
Sorry guys just had to ask.
Kdragon75 said:
Ill be getting the phone from best buy as a black tie replacement if i break my Hero.
So ill get the phone unactivated and sprint wont know unless i tell them i got a new phone. I just need to know if the 4g radio can be completely disabled to make the phone look like a Hero (except for the imei/esn).
So IF some how i could "transplant" aforementioned numbers (is this possible? I don't think so) Sprint would think im still using a 3g phone like the hero...
There is no sense in paying a premium for something that I am not able to use.
If Milwaukee ever goes 4G I would like to undo and needed hacks/mods so that I can register for service at that time.

Lol, I was wondering the same thing.
nothing illegal about this thread, they just wont give u an EVO 4G as a warranty replacement, they will give you another hero.
the back cover says 4G, the bootscreen says 4G, the OS says 4G, what does it matter? If you dont have it you dont have it why do you need to hide it?
The premium charge is not because of 4G.
The charge is to remove the 5BG cap!
Enjoy the new plan of uncapped INTERNET on your phone! Cheers!

Not possible, the ESN is tied to the mainboard and its in sprints system.

yes it has, read the small print every god damn cell phone providers have caps on their unlimited data plans sprints has 5 gb's. If you went over you limit with sprint in the past, they did not complain to no one uses them so they don't call to ***** at their few subscibers
I'm not concerned with the esn. I would only want to disabled the 4g part of the phone. I don't want it to phone home and say I'm an evolution 4g give me 4g.
Ill talk to my stores sprint Rep to see if there's any ligit way around this required $10 fee.

7 Posts and you're already policing the forums?
Someone asking if things are possible is very different than asking about changing an IMEI number.
Your IMEI number is how the carrier recognizes what phone you have. In theory... if you changed that to match your Hero's number then they'd think it was your hero. That is presuming you never turned on your 4G.
The only issue is that I believe it is illegal in the US to spoof your IMEI number. This is a measure taken to allow carriers to block stolen phones from their networks. Makes sense. More info on IMEI http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Mobile_Equipment_Identity
So sorry, you're going to be out of luck.
^^ And that's how you answer an OP's question, stay legal, and avoid being a ****.

(Q) can you use an evo on verizon?

Topic name pretty much sums up the question but would you be able to use an evo on verizon since they are both cdma

No, not unless you can get Verizon to accept the esn.

Nope....You can try using their PRL hack, but use it at your own risk.

I'm not going to say is impossible because as you can see everyday on here at XDA, ANYTHING is possible BUT is properly illegal because it will involve cloning the ESN from a Verizon phone onto the EVO because to tell you the truth, Verizon is NEVER going to allowed a Sprint phone on their network.....especially not one like the EVO! Your best bet is to trade your EVO for the Thunderbolt or something if you really have your mind set on the Verizon network.
this might sound dumb to some of you out there but, Why cant you just unlock the phn and go to one of the verizon authorized dealers (not a verizon store)and have them turn it on. its cdma and all they gotta do is enter the esn.
I know for fact some of those stores dont care what phn you use. they just want the $

I believe that Verizon has the same basic policy as Sprint, which is that they don't accept phones that are not Verizon branded. It's not a question of finding a rep that "doesn't care"...the system won't accept an ESN that's not in the database of ESNs for their branded phones. That's how it works for Sprint, and though I had heard some rumblings a few years ago that Verizon would "open" their network to other devices, I don't think that actually happened. Could be wrong though.

100% no. The person who does it will lose their job. On top of that the people who put in these requests to add ESN numbers to their database have all of their requests checked by the techs who actually have the power to do it. But once again they would lose their job.
Verizon was accepting them if you got the right rep who knew what they were doing, sprint had the touch pro like big red, but with more memory and headphones...people were buying that instead of verizon's..they put a stop to it.

[Q] is there a way to repair a bad esn?

i want to flash my evo to boost mobile but it has a bad esn so i can, is there a way to change it or repair it?
Yep there is and its a simple process. Just search for the many available guides for Flashing to Boost. You'll need a donor Boost phone of course.

We don't talk about illegal activity here. I can tell you that you need a donor phone with a good esn, that's it. Google is your friend, it's not that hard. Don't try youtube for this, obviously you wont find videos there on how to do illegal things.

How to prepare EVO for selling

Hi all,
Well my EVO has given me two great years, but Sprint's speeds just got too bad to bear in my area and I was tired of dealing with ROMs and such so I got a Galaxy Nexus on Straight Talk. I'd like to know what all I need to do to prepare my EVO to sell on eBay. Should I get it back to latest OTA or just sell it with CM 7.2 flashed? Is one or the other more desirable to buyers? Should I restore S-OFF/root? How do I securely wipe EVERYTHING so I feel safe none of my stuff got left behind?
A lot of auctions also mention devices having a bad ESN. If my Sprint service is terminated prior to selling can I ensure my device will not have a bad ESN and I can sell it as a device ready to be reactivated?
Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

I would flash the latest stock Rom (it can't be activated with aosp installed) but I would leave it rooted. Also, if your contract was terminated for non payment then it would have a bad esn

if you're serious you need to look up how to get your MSL, make sure EPST is working, run ##7780#, and get the phone into what is known as a "hands-free activation" state.
every evo i have bought on ebay - and i have bought a few - has had the previous users phone number and some kind of email address visible under settings .. about phone .. phone identity (sense) or settings .. about phone .. status (AOSP)
plus of course nuke your photos and music on the SD card - half the time people leave that stuff too .. smh ..

PM'd you.
So it's looking like I can't wipe out my name and phone number from the device. My number has already been ported to my new service and the Sprint account is cancelled. No dial codes work and factory reset/clear storage does not remove this info. I called a rep and she just said that the info from the last owner is going to be there until it's activated again, and she assured me that it was ready to be activated on a new line. I guess it's not a problem since the buyer would know my name and number anyway, but it's still a little weird. Does this sound correct?

I think you can sell it to repair shop too
Just ask in the listing if they want to stock s-on, or rooted with s-off. I dont think either one is more desirable, depends on the buyer. Not everyone even knows what root it, as far as ESN, it should be clean. To confirm just call sprint and read them yours and see.

Will a T999 with a Bad IMEI work outside U.S.?

Hi, someone is selling me a really nice T999 in excellent condition, with the problem that the IMEI was blocked, and it won't work on any carrier in the U.S. I live on Dominican Republic, will it work on my country fine? 3G and everything? I know that the 3G band matches the one my operator uses, so no problem there.
Thanks in advance.

OP, I'm not actually 100% sure. But, I would imagine that you'd have no trouble using it.
Simple answer is yes.
Thanks for your answers. I ended up buying one on ebay that was cheaper, with the same problem. Only issue is that the auction says bad esn, but i guess that he got that wrong, and means imei. Here it is: http://www.ebay.com/itm/200888137396?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
Hope it turns out OK. I took a gamble with it.

Well, yeah, you really are taking one then. Because, IMEIs are for GSM phone and ESNs are for CDMA phones. That posting says T999 with a bad ESN... So, is it a T999 or a CDMA variant of the SIII???

Hi there.
Well, to tell you the truth, i sold the phone as soon as i got it because it wasn't compatible with my carrier's 3G network. I did unlock it, but unlocking was extremely easy, i just rooted the phone and downloaded an app from the Play Store, and the app did the rest of the work. Easy as pie. After that, the phone worked flawless in the small ampunt of time i spent with it (less than a day) and it was a brand new phone :highfive:. If you are wondering the name of the app, i don't know the exact name, but you can try searching "galaxy unlock" on the Play Store, and you will see a couple of apps. Good luck.

I think that its going to be same, and that its going to work, because the imei was blocked on the country the phone was bought, it should work properly outside that country.
If you have a carrier phone with the IMEI blocked you can unlock it and use it on another carrier. Or you cant? I know u used to could. Also If you call your carrier. for instance tmobile and talk to a superviser they may unlock it for you... They usually do because you're using the phone with their network anyways.. So they still lose money if you decide to go to another carrier.

If your IMEI is blacklisted then the phone has been reported lost or stolen. No US carrier will take a blacklisted phone. Tmobile and att share databases too.

Not always.. Carriers will block the IMEI even you dont pay your bill for so long.. A friend of mine gave me his Sidekick 4G and he stopped paying tmobile. After a while that phone stop working. When I called tmobile they said it was because of the IMEI has been blocked. I said that I have this phone for a long time and you need to turn it back on.. 48 hours later they did
