Class10 32gb microSD cards for this phone? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well, they're finally here - class 10 32gb microSD:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220547
And for me in Canada:
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220547
I believe that Lexar is also releasing some as well. Anyways, has anyone tested a class 10 microSD for this phone? Do they make a difference?
Edit: Please move to accessories section. Thank you.

Hmm, id have a hard time buying a memory card that cost the same as I paid for the phone. I just can't see myself getting "$100" worth of performance over stock.

It is a $500 phone. Where you did you get it for $100? After a 2 year contract and $100 mail in rebate, I still paid over $250.

Sorry but this is one of my pet peeves. The subsidized price of a phone is not how much it "cost." It's subsidized from like $650 because you'll pay out about $1500 on that contract. His question is similar to asking about changing to a larger/faster hard drive in a laptop.
As for the answer to "is it worth it;" We will not really see the benefits too much until apps2sd in Froyo. Copying information from your computer to the sd card will be faster. The faster read won't be noticeable at this time since you are only storing data where the access times wont cause playback issues of music or video. Even with apps2sd, it is unlikely that you will notice much of any difference from a class 6 card. The class corresponds to the minimum speeds of the card and often times better quality cards will exceed those values by quite a bit. The real reason for the class 10 cards will be with the release of phones that do 1080p video capture. Taking multiple, very high resolution pictures per second or recording GOOD 1080p video are the only reasons I can think of to go beyond class 6 at this time. The only other reason would be if one of the developers used partitions on the micro sd to offload parts of android onto the sd card. Given the issues that could create, I dont know that anyone would really want to do that.

Amazon has been running sales from time to time on the Epic and Evo for new sprint customers.
I picked up 2 Epics and 1 Evo for 99 each, no tax to shipping and no activation.
It's a great deal if you are not already with sprint.

I paid about 300 after taxes for my phone but I can confirm what this guy is saying is true.
Amazon has run $99 epics and evo since November.

I suppose that we already have froyo-based ROMS around, so we have apps2SD now. The other point is that we already have 720p recording, so maybe we could benefit - certainly more than the current class 2 SD that it comes with.
The other point is that one can always use these cards with the next phone that a person buys. Of course, by then, SDXC cards will be out.

I thought our phones could only support up to class 6 cards, anything higher would just underclock to class 6 speeds.

At the beginning of december best buy was selling them for 99.

There doesn't appear to be a class 6 32gb microSD, just class 10 released right now. That will no doubt change in a month or so from now.

What brand Class 6 SD card?

What brand of Class 6 SD card should I buy? I see TOPRAM, Transcend, and Nokia but not popular ones like Kingston and Sandisk..
According to this it says Class 2 SD cards might as well be as good as Class 6.

Class 2's performance-price ratio might be higher than Class 6. But only considering performance, I prefer Class 6.

Class 6...meh...you need 16gb Kingston Class 10. That is if your device can handle it.

I am also looking for a 16 gb class 6 sd card but don't wanna pay an arm and leg for. Any recommendations?

Consider that the Sandisk cards may have a longer lifespan and be more reliable, which is a major plus point if you're going to be using the camera to take pictures of sentimental value.

Anyways, I haven't read all that great of reviews on the kingston class 10's. And for 100.00, I can get 2 of the adata class 6 16gb. I think I will pick 1 of those up next time newegg has them instock.
The 16gb sandisk class 2 that comes in the hd2 can drag the phone down if you don't format it once in a while.

Is this really worth the extra ~10$ ish than the sandisk 16gb? From reviews I have read the, average read/write speed on the sandisk CL2 is about 6.5MB/s which is what the CL6 is "rated for"

[Q] SDHC class ratings?

I have a question for anyone well informed on SDHC class ratings.
I have been leaning towards purchasing a 32gb microsd card for my adam. My question is–would a class 10 be worth the extra $40-50 compared to a lower class?
The main pro i have seen spoken of is the rate of transfer is greatly increased with the higher class rating. Other than that what would a basic music listener, e-book reader, or movie viewer gain from a higher class?
I’m used to going out and getting the best there is only to be faced with the fact that the best at the moment is not always the best for me or my pocket book… lol

Sounds like you could use a real answer. The things that you want to do with it when you are already loaded up and using it will not make a difference. But if you were to make a backup of that 32gb card at a class 2 you will be waiting a LONG time. You should at least get a class 4 and shoot for a 6. Not sure they have a 6 for the 32gb yet but they have a 4.
Thanks for the answer. That's what i figured would be the issue

I was not trying to be an ass sorry it came off that way
Looks like lexar just released the class 10 today so I was wrong. Using the card on the phone you will not see much difference. The difference will be when you are trying to use it on your computer like chogardjr said. And even when it is mounted to your computer with your phone you will not see the full performance from it but you should still see a good boost of speed from it.
Personally I would pick speed over size every time, my 16 has been full for awhile but I'm waiting for real class 6/10 32gbs to drop before buying a bigger one.
There are a few card makers out there who will straight up lie about it though so be weary of them.... dont even bother looking on ebay.

I concur. For the average consumers use a class 6 is ideal. It's a great balance of cost and speed.
My personal opinion, only camcorders and cameras with rapid shot capabilities will benefit from a class 10 or higher at this point. Yes, you can copy your mp3s to and from it faster... but how often are you pressed for time when you're doing that operation? My guess would be not often. (For me that's a "I'm home for the night" operation, so it can take as long as it needs)
Thanks for the insight once again fellas. I found a 32gb class 4 on amazon.com for $64.99 it's made by dane. Up until just recently I have never heard of the company but when school started last semester I bought a few 8gb usb sticks made by the same company.....(think I purchased them from target rather cheap) nonetheless I was extremely happy with the performance from a budget flash drive so I took a dive at it.
I'm anticipating the excitement off inserting it into my new Notion Ink "Adam" when it arrives later this month.... Santa came late this year.
Hopefully it will live up to all the buzz just as the Evo did. I've always been first to dive head first into gadget hype. Never has it lived up to the excitement #facepalm (palm pre) until the Evo. Now hopefully the "Adam" will do the same.

32 GB Class 4 $55.00 from Amazon itself

If you're looking for a decently priced 32GB class 4 Microsd card backed by one of the biggest and most respected retailers in the world, you can do much worse than this:
http://www.amazon.com/Transcend-Class-microSDHC-Memory-TS32GUSDHC4/dp/B004R7P28W/ref=pd_cp_e_1
This is sold by Amazon... not "fulfilled by Amazon" but actually sold by them. So $55.00 buys you the peace of mind of knowing that if there's anything wrong with the card, you can always get your money back. Plus, this is about as cheap as I, personally, have seen legitimate 32GB cards sold for.
Also, buy with Amazon's Super Saver shipping and shipping is free (does take a bit longer, though.)
In any case, this is probably what I'll do when I get around to upgrading my 16GB card for a 32.

The higher the number, the faster the write speed. Class 10 is the fastest I have seen in a 32GB MicroSD card. Here is a link on the class differences:

I ordered mine last night and can't wait for it to get here!
I bought a Patriot 32gb Class 4 for $39 + 1.99 shipping from Frys.com. It was a weekend only sale and I ordered mine like 30 minutes prior to the sale ending that Sunday night (so I didn't have time to mass post the deal here). I've since received it and it works great. I'm using it in my Acer Iconia A500 tablet instead of my Evo though. You'd think that watching hi-res movies on the larger screen of the A500 would put the read speed of this Class 4 card to the test, but the whole experience has been flawless.
If you're in the market for a 32gb card, I'd keep an eye on the usual websites (Amazon, Buy.com, Newegg, Frys, etc.) because they Class 4 cards are starting to get rather affordable. The Class 10 cards are still a bit too pricey for my wallet.

My understanding is that the read speed on most of these cards is going to be fine. It's the write speed that varies most and which is dependent on the Class rating of the card. I've got a 16GB class 2 card in my Nook Color and there's no lag watching movies.

The read speed varies significantly between the card classes as well. The big question is whether or not the hardware (which typically trails behind the media) can take advantage of a card with faster access/read times. I haven't found a utility that can speed test the external SD card in my Tegra2 based Acer A500 tablet, but in a thread on another Android forum, the Evo hardware was shown to take advantage of the significantly faster read times in Class 6 & 10 cards.
All that being said, how fast a read time does anyone really need? I've never felt the need to date to go faster than Class 4 card in any of my devices, for both read and even write times.

I wouldn't mind faster write times on my Nook Color if only to be able to copy movies on and off faster (on my current card it takes between 3 and 5 minutes per 1.5 GB title.) Other than that, yeah... not much reason. I've made lots of videos on my Evo and never noiticed any issues with write speed on my Class 4 card.

Basically, stay away from the cheap eBay auctions for them. You'll often get a fake-brand claiming to be SanDisk, but it's really not.
Stick with legit SanDisk or Transcend.
Amazon and Newegg have had some good deals.

I'm curious: where would we see the advantage of a Class 10 card on our phones? Outside of copying files to/from them faster, I'm not sure there's anything we're doing on them that would benefit from it. Anything concrete anyone can suggest that I'm not thinking of? The photos aren't anywhere high-res enough to require it, and the camera's not capable of taking them in a fast enough burst mode to need it, and I'm assuming even the 1080p video capture doesn't need it or Samsung would have had an * in their advertising to let us know. So that leaves me to assume I could probably save some money on a lower class and be just as happy...

Transcend cards are great. I use them in my dslr when i film. I can not be let down when im in the middle of a production.
Class 6-class 10 will be good enough for the phone. A class 6 16gb I've read has the best overall speeds
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
Class 6 will do just fine. The extra expense of the Class 10 is not worth it right now. As a previous poster hinted to, the phone does not do anything fast enough to take advantage of the full Class 10 speeds.
It might help for initial file transfers if you transfer Movies to it or something like that, but how often do you really do that?

Okay Thanks... should be easier to find that lol. But I don't, I just like the best of the best p
I have also looked around the net quite a bit regarding this issue (is how I came to my conclusion above). One more thing I would like to add is to make sure you buy Retail or from a known good supplier to be safe ... like Newegg... not Ebay or Amazon.
Most quality brand name cards will perform their benchmark tests at or above their ratings. This is why Class 6 is good enough for our uses right now until something better than 10 drops and pushes the 10's down in price. (Look to the future whenever you can get a deal)
Here is Sandisk's information on classes:
http://kb.sandisk.com/app/answers/d...speed-ratings-(performance)-for-sd/sdhc-cards
I doubt the cameras on our phones are recording at more than 6MB/s.
I would love to see some stats on this though.. you know, in case I'm wrong.
(which I don't think I am)

Sighs, Just might have to drink some wine to help with the pain. Letstalk SUCKS!
It speeds up everything. Application manager loads faster, faster scan at startup, apps in microsd will load faster, transfering/copying files from or to pc/internal memory, ect...

64GB microSDXC card - $54.99 w/ Free Ship from Amazon!

Lowest price I've seen yet for this size!
Not to be totally presumptuous, but feel free to thank me if you found this deal useful!

From earlier today:

The link in that one was going to charge me shipping though if not Prime Member.

Sorry, I was fairly certain I'd copied it. It's there now!
I posted the Class 10 version of this for $59.95 several days back. Here's the link.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B007WTAJTO/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&condition=new
There's a bit of a delay with it, but I'm good to keep using my current sd card until this Class 10 bad boy arrives.
edit: also, this isn't the lowest price that the Class 6 version of the card has been. $50 from Best Buy several weeks back.

The package says Class 1? I didn't know they made 1, did they just leave the 0 off??
It's UHS-1 - Class 10.
That's a pretty good deal! i've been loading roms on the internal storage and the way it's going i'll run out of space! Debating between a 32 and a 64, price is just significantly different.
legit deal
Does anyone know which one would be a better buy for an SD card?
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-micro...7&sr=1-3&keywords=micro+sd+card+32gb+class+10
or
http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-micro...451768&sr=8-2&keywords=32gb+micro+sd+class+10
I know the second one isn't a class 10, but I'm not sure how much that matters or if the class 10 is worth an extra $15?

From working for Sprint and from personal experience, I've found that a Class 10 is better for taking pictures with the camera and for file transfers, but with your phone (especially this model), it would appear the most efficient way to manage your data would be to store media (music, videos, backups obviously) on the external sd, and to allowed internal storage to be used for taking pictures. If you do this, Class 6 is perfectly sufficient for media playback.
And if you're worried about your pictures being lost in the event of a phone catastrophe, Google+ or Dropbox or anothr of the auto-backup services you can use for free are perfect!

So then I'm guessing something like this would work perfectly?

I sold my 32gb Class 2 cards at $20 each to justify buying the 64gb microSDXC UHS1 Class 10 on Amazon for $60

I would search some more on the two s3 sections and on amazon, I am almost sure I have seen some other 32gb class 6 and 10 posted at better prices than that..
Quick edit of your search and I got better results; http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_n...ctronics&field-keywords=microsd+32gb+class+10
http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Mobil...ile+Ultra+32GB+microSDHC+Card+SDSDQY-032G-U46
Cost $120 in Canada's Amazon .. I wonder how much more it would cost to ship it from the U.S ..especially for a lil chip.
I purchased the 64gb class 10. Looks like it will be here late July mid august..... so lame

I wish I would've seen this a few days back. I just got my 64GB CL6 today and to know that for $4 more I could've been rocking a CL10 is a real kick to the junk!
