[Q] Help! Can only get into clockwork! - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was trying to flash VIPER MOD, but when I flashed the 1st zip, the phone said failure at line:2, then I tried to wipe and flash again, but it didn't work. and I tried to recovered to official rom, apply the update.zip, it said :failure at line 3
Now I can only get into clockwork, what should I do? Help

This happened to me. I used Odin to go back to di18. You can do the same or to dk28

Download the .tar file and Odin to dk28 you shouldn't need a pit file. Hold 1 while pressing the power button to get to the download screen then start the odin proces. After that flash the correct CWM again and try again. I don't know the specifics of the viper rom so I can't help you there. Your actually doing good if you can get into CWM.

I'm actually in a similar boat. After doing the one-click root and recovery, my phone is doing the same exact thing.

I flashed Di18 via odin, it works!
Thanks to all!

why do the ocr method?
The cwm3 zip in the Official thread does everything for you. just Odin to Dk28 then unzip the cwm3 and run .bat it will convert to ext4,root, and install cwm3 all in one step. You then only have to flash your Rom!

Basic Odin questions

Hi,
I have been rooting for a while with my evo 4g which is basically just recoveries & zip files.
Currently I have updated to Calk's ICS Beta 3 rom with modem FC05. I have read some stuff here & there that talk about having issues going from a ICS rom back to a GB nandroid.
I have installed Kies opened Odin, looked at the Wiki here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1274337
I just dont quite get in terms of flashing zips through odin. I keep reading people say to odin back to stock & then flash from there.
How do I do that? I looked at QB777's video on youtube, but it seems like PIT files arent used much at this point.
Any advice would be great.
Thanks,
Rich
Ok, basically when you Odin back to stock, it involves flashing a .tar ROM from the pda slot in desktop Odin and not zip file like you would in CWM. Once you restore back to stock, you can find a .tar recovery, I personally use rogue which will allow you to have cwm-based recovery for flashing zips. All the links should be in development. Let me know if you still need help
Edit-what Odin does is it allows you to flash Roms, kernels, moderns, etc even if you don't have a custom recovery, provided that they are in the correct format, like .tar extension

so when i flash a tar, I go into download mode, open odin, point it to a stock rooted tar file that has CWR & I am back to stock ready to flash to something else?
Can you help me find those files? A stock rooted, CWR should do the trick.

Ok, so you go into a download mode on your phone, open Odin, plug in your USB cord, ODIN should recognize your phone provided you installed the right drivers. You're good if you get the yellow box that says 0 com, something something. The only box that should be checked is Auto Reboot in Odin.
The easiest way that I've been going back and forth between GB and ICS is to install the rooted EL29 .tar version here
http://little-melon.com/sfhub/SPH-D710.EL29_CL852097_ROOTED-sfx.exe
You would need to extract the file until you get a folder with tar.md5 name. Example of the file I provided would be SPH-D710.EL29_CL852097_ROOTED_PDA.tar.md5 once you unzip it. This is the file you would put on the PDA slot of your desktop Odin.
Once you do this, Odin will start flashing and be done in like 1-2 minutes and auto reboot. Do not do anything to shut down, unplug, or mess with the device while Odin is flashing or you may end up bricking it. Once your phone reboots you will be rooted and stock based with EL 29 modem and kernel, which is the latest official Sprint OTA. If you want to get a recovery after this, you would need to go back into Odin and flash a kernel that has a recovery baked in. Like I said I use Rogue and the link would be here for Rogue Stock EL29-
http://goo-inside.me/kernels/TeamRo.../rogue_ET-recoveryonly-1.1.4-rc0-odin.tar.md5
Flashing this in Odin you will get CWM-based recovery and can start backing up, flashing different ROMS.
Hope this helps.
This is very helpful. I am stuck at the SGS2 boot screen after flashing MIJJs Goodness 1.8, can't boot in to recovery, only download mode. How do I fix this?

Flash a recovery in download mode that I linked. It's rogue recovery
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Just to confirm, using the files you had here, I open odin in download mode, choose PDA (check the check box) point it to the tar.md5 file, hit start & wait a few minutes until it auto reboots?
How do I flash the recovery? Is it also the PDA?
I have been flashing modems in CWR, not odin & I just want to make sure that recovery or rom itself, just PDA & nothing else checked (but PDA)?

Reverting back to GB ROM
I recently switched back from ICS to GB and did not have any problems with the change back. I simply went into my SD card manually took everything off except my chaulkins format all and my wifi tether hack. I then went into recovery mode and did a wipe all. Then went to zip files, ran the format all, then did an install of the new ROM and it works great!

You will have a unsecure stock recovery. It looks stock, its sfhubs repack right?
yeah i think its sfhubs so it looks stock? and i could flash stuff right just not modems and roms

Right, no roms or modems unless u want a paper weight lol
whenevr i try flashing something it just says mount sdcard no such file or directoey...
Not sure what your're doing. If you are on sfhub's stock rooted you can then add his 'unlocked' or 'unlocked plus' kernel. Via mobile Odin or regular Odin. See his second post if you haven't already. They do NOT contain CWM but do let you flash unsigned zip files.
Here is the ACS kernel with CWM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1660138 download the zip to your SD card, boot to stock 'unlocked' recovery (power down, volume up+Power button till first samsung screen and let go) and choose to update file from SD card (or something like that) flash it there. Be careful if you are not sure what you are doing and read some more or you will surely brick your phone.
FE16_repack_ACS.tar Flash with ODIN.
its not letting me download it is the link bad? and i think im just going to go back to el29 and restart
nevermind i got it thanks alot.
You don't have to go back unless you really want to.
I just tried the zip and tar download for ACS recovery and they both worked. (remember that is a link to a site you have to download from there; can't 'save the link..')
IF you are on sfhub's stock rooted FE16 just add the unlocked kernel following post 2.
Then download the zip file for ACS recovery and flash that in the 'unlocked recovery'.
You sound like you're getting frustrated and not sure what to do. If that's the case take your time and do some more reading.

The link can be very slow to start, may take several minutes. Let it sit maybe.
Edit: Oops, too slow. (Me, not the download)
do i flash the unlocked kernal in e4gt tool? or odin where do i put the zimage for odin?
im just ganna run the tfe16 how do i flash the cwm kernal for that one ?
you don't use the e4gt tool
You use Odin as described in the second post from sfhub's stock rooted fe16. place the .tar into the pda slot
there is no tar when i extract it theres just a zimage?
Not sure which one you are talking about.
The unlocked kernel tar from sfhub? Here there nothing to 'extract' the file is a .tar file USED by Odin. place the tar in the pda slot as it says in this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26205440&postcount=2
If you're talking about the tar file for the ACS recovery use that in mobiel Odin and place it in the kernel slot, scroll down and select flash firmware. Bam done.

Leader he's unzipping the tar.
King, please leave all tar and zip files intact.
Here is how it works:
Tar files - use Odin
Zip files - use CWM recovery
When you use odin from the pc, these are the slots to use depending on the file you are flashing:
•PDA Button: This is for flashing kernels and ROMs (in .tar format)
•PHONE Button: This is for the phone's RADIO/MODEM ONLY!!!!!!
ok i know the "kernal" is a tar file i need clockword mod not the kernal
i know i dont have CWM recovery thats what im trying to get im just on stock fe16 right know!

the CWM is 'baked into' the Kernel. So you have to add that kernel to your stock rooted setup after you do that.
Simple use sfhubs stock rooted fe16
Follow the steps in post to to add unlocked recovery
boot to 'stock unlocked' recovery
update from zip file
select the ACS kernel and apply it.
then you will have stock rooted fe16 with ACS CWM
where are the steps? and i already flashed the kernal again

Have you tried to flash a custom recovery using Odin for PC? If you can then you should try to install Billards back to stock counter reset mc2 ROM. You may have to reroot and I recommend CF Auto Root. Heres zip file for Odin. A flashable tar file to use in Odin
When running Odin make sure ONLY thing checked is Auto reboot. You are in download mode on phone...(vol down-home-then power..holding all three till it boots into download mode). Make sure com port is lit on Odin.Click on PDA and locate the cwm file and click on it. Should put it into the PDA slot, hit start. If it fails change usb input slots with cable, hit reset and try again. Make sure you have the Billard 412 Rom on external/internal before doing tthis. Once the recovery is flashed try to install the Rom.
Let me know how it goes and by the way is been awhile since Ive seen you from the OG EVO days!

Hard Bricked S3 At&t, booting from unbrick but no recovery or download mode

I follow this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2549068
I put this file on the sd card debrick-SGH-I747U-CUEMJB3.img, made sure phone battery was charged up. Tried to enter download mode, it completely skipped it and phone is now running stock 4.3?? I try to enter recovery mode and it still just starts up with Stock 4.3.
So I assume it is running completely of the sd card. I can enter Stock Recovery but not sure what I do now. If i pull the card the phone is dead like before. Red light when plugged in, nothing happens with any button pushes.
I guess I am wondering what my next step is?
Thanks

The device is indeed booting off the SD card. However, if you can boot into system, you should also be able to boot into download and recovery modes using the 3-button combo. If you can get into download mode, you can try using Odin v 3.07 to flash the complete 4.3 stock image. Download the Odin flashable zip file from the link below to your computer. Extract the tar.md5 file and verify the MD5 to be sure it downloaded correctly.
http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23329332407590581
Download Odin v3.07 and run Odin.exe for the flashing tool. With your debrick card, boot into download mode by pressing the Volume Down, Home and Power button. If you can't get into download mode with the 3-button combo, suggest you try a USB jig. Use Odin to flash the stock file to your phone. If the flashing is successful, the device should be able to boot normally after this without the debrick card.
Cool thanks Larry2999. I will have to go the USB jig route it won't go into recovery or download. I can only get into Stock recovery. Any specifics I need to know when getting a usb jig? Thanks again for you response. I am just glad it is working now. But probably don't want to run off SD forever.

There is a thread somewhere on how to make a D-I-Y jig. You can, however, buy it cheaply online for about $3. In buying one, you'd only need to be sure it states that it works with the S3.
Looks like you are able to get into recovery now but you have stock, rather than custom, recovery. There is only one recovery partition and the default is stock, unless, you flash a custom recovery. If you had custom recovery, it would have been possible to flash a 4.3 stock restore zip via (custom) recovery. To flash custom recovery, however, you'd need Odin in download mode so we are back to the problem with getting into download mode.
Thanks Larry ordering jig tomorrow

Yes, the ONLY way to recover is to flash a complete 4.3 stock image. Are you sure you bricked in the first instance by flashing 4.3 via Odin? The only Odin compatible stock 4.3 file I'm aware of is the one in the link I forwarded earlier. This was only recently developed and appears to have been used by several people without problem. You may check to be sure you were not trying to flash a 4.1.1 file in error. Apologies if I sound like I'm second guessing you but flashing 4.1.1 via Odin usually results in the kind of hard brick you experienced.
The other alternative would be to flash custom recovery (TWRP or CWM) via Odin and then use custom recovery to flash a complete 4.3 stock image. You will find the instructions in the following thread ...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2658486
Download the stock restore zip for your preferred custom recovery option to your PC and save to your phone's internal storage. If you want to use TWRP, you can find the Odin flashable file for TWRP via the link below ...
http://techerrata.com/file/twrp2/d2att/openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.1-d2att.tar
If, however, you go the first option and flash the 4.3 file via Odin, be sure to use Odin v 3.07. You'll see the Odin flashable file and instructions on page 4 of the following thread ...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2722660&page=4
or you can download directly from here ...

The file from that thread is for (custom) recovery only. You can't flash zips via Odin so if you are using that file, you would need to first install custom recovery via Odin and then flash the zip via custom recovery.

I thought a tar file could be used with Odin?
Any sugestions please and thank you.

why not just flash the rom in twrp?
not sure how to do that, i have always used odin. Cant use twrp on my phone because i am not rooted
Any directions doing it your way? Thanks

and i cant get tar files to work in Odin, just md5
mostly just want my hotspot back
You rooted before, shouldn't be that hard to do it right again: Odin TWRP and flash a stock OJ6 ROM with the mod you seek, following the OP did instructions. Done and done. You may find what you're looking for in post 3 of @tx_dbs_tx OJ6 stock thread.
Odin won't work because you can just convert Recovery flash zip to tar that Odin could use. As you suspect, you'd need a tar.md5 but 7-zip doesn't convert Recovery ROM zip to tar ball. They're completely different; tar.md5 AKA tar ball is more of a partition overwrite partition by order flash, whereas ROM zip has explicit instructions in the updater-script that Odin wouldn't follow. They have their purposes: typically, Odin would be a tool to update to current update and install custom recovery; recovery could be used to flash a ROM or mod compatible with installed update version.
I suspect Odin has done no harm if it's a recent one. It's just refusing to brick your phone.

Does your phone boot to recovery or system? You may need to start over with full OJ6 tar. Find it in general forum and follow the OP instructions.
I'd recommend factory reset as well.

System was booting but you couldn't install TWRP. Now you have TWRP but system doesn't boot.
I suggested you start over with stock OJ6 tar. Did you do that? Sorry, I'm not following what you actually did. I'd say factory reset and flash the stock OJ6 ROM but it sounds like your partitions are messed up. If you agree, do the following:
1)Wipe everything but extSdCard in TWRP.
2)Power down, pull battery minimum 30 seconds.
3)Boot into download mode, using Odin 3.10.7, uncheck the default options, check AP box, click AP tab and select the OJ6 tar.md5 Start only when you have com:xx detected your phone (present).
4)Upon success, close Odin, pull USB and battery, boot intro stock recovery and factory reset.
5)Redo steps 2 and 3 but this time use both the Odin defaults to allow the auto reboot. Close Odin after success.
6)Go through setup wizard and make sure stock is fully functional.
7)Once verified, Odin TWRP with auto reboot unchecked, upon success, pull USB and battery for at least 30 seconds.
8)Boot into recovery and follow OP install instructions to flash custom ROM.
Edit: ROM zip should be on ext sdcard. You may be able to move some files from sdcard to extSdCard with TWRP file manager in advanced tab.

I am doing what you had said but it takes me to twrp when i go to factory reset. So i did it through twrp and then flashed the oj6 baseband rom and it will not get passed the samsung galaxt note 4 image.

There was a recent similar issue where the OP found a way out using some of the advice I gave.
Basically, Odin flashed the modem and recovery separately to get full Odin tar to flash after factory resetting in stock recovery. Sounds like your Odin flash isn't taking either. Once you have those tar files, flash them twice as suggested with battery pulls greater than 30 seconds where indicated.
I'd follow the guide using OJ6 tar to extract recovery from and the OJ6 modem tar you already have. I added one extra edit l found useful when I attempted to duplicate the OJ6 recovery tar flash myself; look for that too. Alternatively, you could use KIES to try recovery at any point that it recognizes the phone using its emergency recovery feature.
If that doesn't work, try the OG5 tar for files using the OG5 modem I linked in that thread.
You should read the whole thread to get the idea of the recovery theory starting with the summary the OP posted in this link below.

Best wishes for success.

If your last post is truly the only obstacle, did you wipe following ROM OP instructions before you flashed and did you make sure the ROM flashed?
Often, custom ROMs will require more boot time on initial boot. Boot loop may suggest you didn't wipe the dalvik-cache partition. Usually, clean install is recommended. The updater-script may format system partition and others as well but without verifying specific ROM flashed, users may recommend wiping everything but extSdCard and formatting data partition multiple times each. If wiping system partition, you can expect the flash to fail with a binary failure in red when flashing unless you first rebooted recovery prior to flashing ROM. If you spot that failure, just reboot recovery with the reboot option menu and flash without wiping on second attempt.
If you've done all that and allowed time to boot, you may need to do the steps I've given in the suggestions above.
I hope you can find your way through it.
