[Q] ADB doesn't detect my phone - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have a stock unrooted Desire Z, and I'd like to root it using the instructions provided here.
I've downloaded gfree and visionary r14, and I already have the Android SDK installed, along with adb. However, for some reason, adb doesn't detect my phone when connected. It's set to "Charge only" and "USB debugging" is also enabled. I've already installed HTC Sync, however Device Manager still shows an "Android Phone" under "Other devices" as shown below

}
I've tried to install the driver again but I'm not sure where to point it. I've tried pointing it to the <sdk>\google-usb_driver\ but it couldn't find any appropriate driver. I looked at android_winusb.inf and sure enough I don't find my Desire Z in the list of USB VID/PIDs.
I've also tried installing the drivers in <HTC>\HTC Driver\Driver Files\XP_x86, <HTC>\HTC BMP USB Driver\qcusbmdm, or <HTC>\HTC BMP USB Driver\qcusbser, but none of them worked.
Lastly, I've tried uninstalling the "Android Phone" driver(it's not installed in the first place, but just to get it out of device manager), but once I reconnected the phone, "Found New Hardware Wizard" comes up again prompting me to install a driver for it.
Is this the reason why my phone isn't being detected? How can I install the correct driver and get adb to detect the phone properly?
Thanks!

ZOMG yoo didn't search DIAF!!!!!111one
BTW there is a Q&A forum which is really the right place for issues like this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=829)
To answer your question, yes it's a driver issue. The drivers do seem to be tricky what worked on my work laptop (Windows 7 x86) did not work on my home laptop (Vista x64)
Are you using this guide? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865685
You can also try this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834748
There is a driver in that one that worked on my Windows 7 machine: http://www.mediafire.com/?wzdjcmowziw
There is another one to try but I can't remember where it is, the search function isn't working right now and as I mentioned this thread will likely be locked soon.
Are you using "Update Driver" from device manager, then using "Have Disk" and pointing it to the folder where you have the driver extracted?
If you still need help PM me I will look for that other driver.
Edit: this may also be helpful

Anyone know how I can get ADB on WINXP? doesn't work for me.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App

What part isn't working? Does the SDK refuse to install or are you getting some kind of error.
Without more information I could offer the first google search result for "adb xp" http://forums.t-mobile.com/t5/Operating-System-Software/How-to-Install-ADB-XP-and-Vista/m-p/163836
It seems a bit dated but may be helpful all the same.

Ok thanks. When I first rooted my G2 I tried with ADB but didn't work for me. I don't think. So I went with visionary. The easier way? I keep hearing ADB is like a must so we could see exactly what we're doing. How about that ADB wireless app? Does anyone use that and is it good?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App

Hi raitchison, thanks for the reply.
I've not followed those 2 guides specifically, but rather googled and found other guides, and followed them(the general gist).
In the first guide's "complete" way, I've completed Steps 1, 2, 3, 5.
Didn't do 4 but rather just went to the platform-tools folder and ran adb directly from there. Shouldn't matter.
I'm using a 3rd party cable, didn't think it'd make a difference but I guess I'll try with the original cable as well. This cable seems to work on another PC(at least driver installation, haven't tried with adb yet) with the same OS(Windows XP Pro SP3)
Step 7 doesn't show any devices. That's the problem.
Did a similar installation with the "quick" way. Same problem. The 2nd link seems to be similar.
I'm using Device Manager->Android Phone->Update Driver->Install from a list or specific location(Advanced)->Include this location in the search-><Path> where <Path> is the location of the drivers that I tried(from SDK or HTC Sync). Windows tells me that there's no appropriate drivers in that path to install.
Also tried Device Manager->Android Phone->Update Driver->Install from a list or specific location(Advanced)->Don't search. I will choose the driver to install->Other devices->Have Disk-><Path>. Same problem.

Are you sure you installed the latest HTC Sync (linked to in the guide referenced earlier)? Otherwise, you can try installing PdaNet (it'll install the correct drivers as well---a lot of users have reported success with it). You can also try using the drivers attached to this post. It is simply the SDK drivers modified with the ID for the G2:
Code:
%SingleAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_0BB4&PID_0C91
%CompositeAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_0BB4&PID_0C91&MI_01
I think it should work with the Desire Z as well, but I'm not sure...

What version of Windows are you using ? The HTC Sync drivers should give you everything you need. It does sound like it's installing using the wrong driver, and that's why it's not seeing it.

The HTC Sync drivers did not work on my home PC, which is Vista x64, I had to use a different driver to get it to work.

Vista 64 ? ok, that's probably not that common though. The HTC Sync drivers do work with Win 7 64-bit, because I walked a guy through it myself. So I'm suprised they don't work on Vista 64 as well (but I don't doubt you).

[Q][SOLVED] G2 Drivers

I am trying to install the ADB for my G2 and it won't install. I have downloaded the USB drivers, pointed the installation to my android sdk folder and it still comes back and says
Cannot Install this Hardware
I gotta be missing something here. Last time I did this was on my G1, worked fine it seemed, I followed the instructions from way back then. But it seems to be much different now.
Can someone help me with this? I Googled around, but found nothing that helped.
SOLUTION:
I modified and uploaded the usb drivers to work for the G2, these will work fine.

You can do that or in my case I just forced the driver with Have Disk.
The above solution is more elegant.
This thread was up a few days ago and I wrote out a how to on manually choosing the drivers for mass storage and adb but it vanished somewhere and I haven't been able to find it since I pposted it. I even subscribed to the thread cause that's what I do with threads I've made posts in...

Thanks, got that working perfectly.
I can't get Windows to recognize the new driver. I updated the file as per the thread above, updated the SDK and all, but Windows keeps seeing the phone as USB only. There is an entry under Disks in device manager as HTC Android Phone USB Device, but won't update the driver because it says it's up to date already. Any thoughts?
Make sure you have USB Debugging enabled under Applications. Then select the driver manually using Have Disk.

-Connect device
-Start/right-click on computer
-Device manager

-Right-click it, update driver
-Let me choose/browse the preconfigured ones.
-You'll see android phone and adb something something in the list, click adb something something
-Select the qualcomm ADB composite ... one and select ok and your good to go.
If you're having problems mounting sd to pc do the same thing EXCEPT
-You'll see android phone and adb something something in the list, scroll all the way down and select universal serial bus controllers

You don't need the G2 driver. Just force the ADB driver and it'll work just fine.
What are you talking about ? You need to go in the phone settings under applications and enable USB debugging.

i already had that checked on, but by using the pdanet app i was able to force adb to recognize the phone. if u install it on your pc, and connect your phone it will make sure u get adb. works with every phone so far. adb worked for the vibrant, slide 3g, a g1 and a n1 too. every android phone i throw at pdanet is being recognized by adb so far.
Thanks the new driver worked.

This method worked pretty well, except I chose "Google, Inc." as the category, then specifically chose "ADB Testing Interface" as the driver. Works like a charm!
USB mounting works fine automatically on Windows 7 64-bit.

thank you
Let's try the obvious...
USB 3.0 vs USB 2.0 ports and, not saying you're stupid or anything but your device is actually in bootloader mode yes? adb reboot bootloader <<< I assume you manually booted into bootloader mode on the phone hence why you didn't use that command in the screenshot? The command won't work from within the running OS it needs to be in bootloader mode.
Of course it should say in fastboot mode that the USB is connected.
Another solution for the drivers that seem to work is to uninstall all the HTC drivers and HTC Sync. Connect the device to the computer, cancel/close the prompt to install drivers. Got to Device Manager, find the device and select the option to manually select drivers thenpick the Generic MTP Android device drivers. @redpoint73 usually recommends this for device driver issues, seems to work out most of the time.
Thank you for your reply! I uninstalled the drivers etc as you say
For cons, I do not really understand the beginning of your paragraph
To get in fastboot mode, I switch off the mobile, then I turned still pressing volume down and power at the same time and press fastboot
My bootloader is unlocked if that's what you want to know
I confess I'm a bit noob with Roma with HTC and I have a little trouble with English (I use an internet translator)
nobody?

I'm not sure about "most of the time" but it worked for me, and some other folks I've given this step to.
OP hasn't stated whether he tried this or not.
Other possible solutions are to try different USB ports or even another PC (he stated that other USB cables were already attempted); re-install HTC Sync; and verify whether the ports are USB 3.0 (which often does not play well with this device).
I had the same problem and couldn't find a solution Its a combination issue of Windows 8.x and USB 3.0 drivers. I tore my hair out trying to fix it and gave up, I just do my Android tinkering on a Windows 7 PC now.

ckpv5 explained it. But I don't find it so strange (for it to work for one person, and not another). Consider the endless combinations of possible PC hardware, plus differences in software, such as the mentioned updated Windows drivers which may or may not be installed. USB 3.0 (versus 2.0) alone has cause a lot of folks trouble with getting fastboot/RUU to work on the M8.
Point in case, fastboot and adb have always worked fine with this phone on my work laptop. But on my home desktop PC, I often have to manually select generic MTP drivers to get adb to work. Both run Win7.
I will try my wife's HTC cable.i used the Motorola cable.

Re-install HTC Sync, try a different USB port, a different cable.
Also, on the PC (assuming Windows) one thing that works for me, is that I have to go into Device Manager, find the phone, and pick the option to manually select a driver, then select the generic "Android MTP device" (or some name like that - can't remember exactly). This method may or may not work. I have to sometimes do it on my home PC to see my phone on fastboot/adb, but don't need to do this on my work laptop PC. Its not consistent.
Other than that (general fastboot tips for HTC devices), I can't offer much more advice. This is the M8 device forum, and I have no experience with your specific device.

Ok, i have returned to stock, no change there.
I have connected the phone to an old windows 7 x86 laptop, it worked fine.

the strange thing is that ADB work and the HTC Sync Manager recognize the phone when the phone is in bootloader.
Nevermind, I have reverted back to Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64.

I guess its Lenovo's fault for not making drivers compatible with windows 8.1.

Didnt done it. Maybe today or tomorrow, dont know -.- How can i complete deinstall USB Drivers?
Installed now:
Android SDK
ADB install 1.4.3
Oneplus3 Drivers
Device is detected as: Kedracom?! And then - Kedracom Device, after clicking on "driver update" i can change it to "Android ADB Device" then ADB Sideload works.
When i boot then to Fastboot the Device is detected as "Android Bootloader Device" or so...then i cant install nothing, and i cant connect to the Phone.
Im Using the USB ports from behind, dont use the front one.
Any tip? What can i do? screws me up -.-

Hello again

it seems to be a problem with adb Windows 10 IDK
, it is better to do it on Windows 7
Follow this :

Ok, so i could install win7 as second OS? Have enough Harddisks, so its np.
Think i try this, PC is fresh installed, so if its not good or buggy i kill it again :/
Ok, Installed Windows 7 and all works fine... damn. thx for the tip
I had this exact issue and fixed it. Fastboot would never see my device, and the device manager shows "Kedracom" no matter how I tried to install or force the correct drivers. Turns out Windows 10 (and Windows 8) has a feature that completely prevents installation of unsigned drivers. If you're seeing "Kedracom" in the device manager, then your driver is NOT actually installed. This is true even if Windows doesn't throw you an error message during install, or if you appear to force the installation. Even though it looks like you're doing the install correctly, Windows just ignores your unsigned drivers.
You need to temporarily disable the security feature to permit installation of unsigned drivers. This involves invoking a special restart function. http://www.howtogeek.com/167723/how...8.1-so-that-you-can-install-unsigned-drivers/
One you've done this you, you can do a forced install of the drivers you downloaded for the OP3.

Bootloader driver issues on Windows 10?

I made this post to hopefully help me help you help us.
My Razer Phone is currently unable receive any commands while in fastboot mode/bootloader.
This seems to be a fairly common problem that I see some people are running into without having any concrete solution. I have tried numerous suggestions and then some. Therefore, I want to provide as much information and background to the problem to try and help anyone with more experience that is willing to get to the bottom of this.
So for some background, I successfully rooted my Razer Phone with help from both of these threads:
Rooting Android 9 December Update With Magisk (No TWRP)(Global)
and
[TWRP + MAGISK] FULLPROOF Guide for all Razers! Wifi Fix!
I primarily used the first thread listed to achieve root.
The phone is currently on the stock ROM, rooted with magisk installed. I do not have TWRP installed. It works perfectly fine under normal use.
I am trying to revert to stock and relock my bootloader using Razer's guide HERE. When using the 'flash_all' script that the guide references, the script fails, because the phone cannot receive fastboot commands.
I followed Razer's installation guide PDF to install the adb/fastboot drivers.
I have also tried using ClockworkMod's Universal ADB Driver.
EDIT: I also tried using [Tool] Latest ADB Fastboot and USB Driver installer tool for Windows
The phone is currently on the stock ROM, rooted with magisk installed. I do not have TWRP installed. It works perfectly fine under normal use.
I'm pretty sure I have installed the adb drivers correctly. I can use adb commands while android is running. It's listed when using the "adb devices" command. It successfully restarts and enters the bootloader after typing "adb reboot bootloader", but after typing "fastboot device", it only outputs "< waiting for any device >" and waits. I have also tried using the command "fastboot -i 0x1532 devices" as suggested in a related thread, but this just returns "fastboot.exe: unknown option -- i" and fails.
I have also tried selecting "Android ADB Interface", as well as "Android Bootloader Interface" when installing the google usb driver. I even tried using the third option, no luck.
Now here's why I say that I'm pretty sure that I have the drivers installed correctly:

}
This is what is displayed in Device Manager when the phone is in fastboot mode and connected to my PC after installing the drivers.
It displays normal when android is running with or without USB debugging enabled.
I have tried this on a few Windows 10 PCs and get the same result. So, I wouldn't be able to tell if this is a Windows problem or if it is my phone:
This is what my bootloader shows. Besides the serial number I blocked out, notice how some data is missing? Could this be the problem?
I'm curious to know the method of root everyone else having this problem had used and whether their bootloader looks like this.
I understand the community for this phone isn't as active as it used to be.
So, thank you to anyone in advance for the help and your time.
This devices is tricky for sure. Everything worked just fine when I unlocked bootloader a few months back, but now when I wanted to flash LOS I just couldn't get anything working with drivers.
Then I stumbled upon this [Tool] Latest ADB Fastboot and USB Driver installer tool for Windows and it actually installed the correct driver.
Adb & fastboot all works fine after that.

I forgot to mention that I had also tried this tool to install the drivers on a few different PCs. I did all of this (including other methods) after making sure to uninstall any drivers that were previously installed. The installation succeeds, but still has no effect on the phone being detected when it's in fastboot. Everything else, like file transfer and adb commands does.
Thank you for your time and for replying.
I've had the same problems you've had Waffle. I tried everything I could read in the forms, what ended up fixing the driver issues for me was to use Linux. I owe it to Linux's superior driver support that fixed the issue for me.
Well, I finally got it to work. I decided to try the tool tys0n mentioned again, and it worked. Not sure what I did differently this time, but I am thankful that it is now connecting properly.
Sorry for piggybacking onto my own post but now, after using the razer file to factory reset and lock the bootloader, the screen says "Your device has loaded a different operating system." on boot and some apps still say that the phone is rooted. When accessing the bootloader it says that everything is locked and the OEM Unlocking switch is disabled in developer options. Not sure what I may have done wrong, since it's just running a script for the most part or if it's just stuck like this since I rooted the phone in general.
