The only way i know of to brick a phone is to flash a GSM Radio and there should be none on this forums
hey whats up. i live in tampa. theres really nothing to the root though, if you can follow the simple steps you should be fine.
I upgraded my evo to .6 update and then ran the unrevoked app and am sticking to that root as of right now for homebrew and wifi tether. There's not much incentive to flash a rom since not much is out there yet. Give it a little time but for now the unrevoked is as simple as can get. Install the app, run the program and it will "root" your phone every time you boot up as long as the app is installed. Uninstall the app, reboot and your phone should go back to stock (i think)
Keep in mind that the nand is still locked so you wont be able to flash custom roms with the unrevoked method but its fine for wifi tether and the sort...lemme know if you got any more questions

Sound easy enough, does that unrevoked app install whatever is needed to run the wifi or do i have to find additional info for that?

Just follow the step-by-step instructions. Figuring out how to do it on your own will help a lot when you have other problems.

So, could someone help me with rooting??

I've had my Evo for about 3 weeks now and am now wanting to root now that I see cyanogenmod is coming to Evo. I've rooted my Nexus and G1 with no problems but it seems the Evo is more difficult, what is the easiest way to root my Evo? And would someone be willing to help me with rooting it via IM or something similar?
There are tons of threads in the android development forum to show you how. Not to mention there was a one click root at some point if I am not mistaken, although I have no idea if it still works.

Yea, I've seen all of them and they all seem tedious compared to Nexus rooting. Which is the best method to go about rooting? I want to use Amon RA recovery if that helps. I'd really appreciate if someone could help me too.
Can anyone help?
Simple Root is 3 clicks & you're rooted & nand unlocked. Running win7 x64 & worked great for me.
I was reading up on it, do I need to uninstall HTC sync and the HTC drivers to get it to work??
I believe for unrevoked you need to remove those items ( the last time i checked at v2 ).
Versus Simple Root... I believe those are all required to get it to work.
What Version is your phone it would be much easier to know
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Its 1.47.651.1 I'm going to try the 1 simple root method, but just have one question, am I supposed to have it on charge only or disk drive?
Charge-only
Awe crap, I forgot to put flash recovery, was I supposed to do that first or can I do that after step 1 or something???
Ok, so I got to part 4 and it just says starting part 2, thats it, it doesn't do anything more. Did I do something wrong, or....? Please help.
So could someone please help me???????
What method are u using? Try unrevoked 3, its very simple
*This was posted from my Evo 4G*
I had to do this after the using simple root method.

Thanks for replying guys, but I got it to work finally late last night. Anyways, I can't get wireless tether to work. It keeps force closing. I know I have root and everything because I was able to make a nand backup and I flashed Damagecontrol.

[Q] Root 2.2 but keep 100 stock?

Is is possible to root 2.2 but keep my phone completely stock? At this point all that I want from root is to turn on the hotspot, wireless tether and to use a few of " root only" apps.
I did search and did not find my answer. I'm sure that it is here somewhere, so I apologize in advance. This is my first android device so I will most likely be waiting for an easy root solution before I try to root my phone.
I'm sure that most will say what's the point? Being new to it all I would like to proceed with caution.
Thanks again for any kind soul that is feeling charitable and cares to answer.

Yeah search rooted stock rom, you should find it
Try Netarchy's Roms
This is rooted stock:
HTC OTA Froyo 2.2, *FINAL*, build 3.36.651.6 (Rooted) Odexed
Or if you want just a little more flavor, click on the Burnt Droid link in my sig:
Pretty much same as stock, but Netarchy's newest kernal capable of overclocking, and de-odexed, and a few other goodies.

[Q] I need an adroid education

Hey guys... plain and simple, I need help. I'm kind of a noob, but not really. I know a little bit here and there but I want to get good with my Evo, I mean really good! I'm currently browsing XDA in my car (Evolution X) tethered to my Evo 4G. Love Evo's. I'm also on a macbook pro, which makes a lot of the standard rooting options difficult for me, and i'm not running boot camp on my mac, so I don't have windows access.
Anyway, I want a foolproof, safe root. Currently I'm rooted with unrEVOked3. I hear not so great things, especially that full root might not have been attained. I want to confirm this and I don't know how. I don't want to be stuck with a root that might brick me in the future or give me problems down the road. I'm considering unrooting unrevoked and re-rooting with a more solid root method. I know that it doesn't matter the method as long as root is attained in the end but, from what i've read, a lot of people just don't agree with unrevoked method. I'm also concerned about the updates that unrevoked will provide when OTAs come out.
Here are my objectives...
1. Be familiar with the definitions and common terms root users use. For example, I want a clear understanding of recovery mode, HBOOT, bootloader, setcpu, kernels, etc. I know a little bit, but I don't feel comfortable enough to start messing around with flashing roms, changing kernels, etc. I want to be though.
2. I want to be able to flash roms.
3. I want full root and guaranteed SU permissions.
4. Wifi Tether.
5. ability and know how to overclock and underclock depending on the situation i'm in.
I know a lot of you guys will tell me to search and READ READ READ, but i've been doing this since I got me Evo about a month and a half ago. I rooted with unrEVOked3 because on my mac it was a simple download and click.
I downloaded the android-sdk-mac-86 download and I also have ECLIPSE for mac. I know these are app development programs, but will this help me with root and everything from there on?
Does anyone have a link to a site with definitions and explanations or is someone willing to take the time to explain to me these definitions and how they relate to android and effect the phone...
I appreciate you guys helping me. If you're going to tell me to use the search button or read the stickies, please save it, my laptop only has 3 hours of battery and i'm driving cross country and checking the forums while i'm riding shotgun.
Thanks in advance.
my 6th objective is to have all the apps i'll need to monitor and maintain my phone as best as i can.
I know about ROM manager, setcpu (don't have yet), Titanium Backup, and system info.
is there an app that allows me to browse ALL folders on the phone? currently I have ASTRO.

thank you for the link.

[Q] hey to any devs out their are u guys planning to release 1 click root method?o

1 click root application like z4root or gingerbreak for gingerbread phone like our us any future solution for this?
Revolutionary is like a three-click root process. It takes about ten minutes. I know it can get easier, but it doesn't really need to. Unless you need a way to do it without a computer, you shouldn't have a reason to not be able to do it through Revolutionary. If you can't figure it out, you shouldn't root to begin with.
I was personally hoping for a longer, more in-depth root method using adb that will either keep the current hboot or downgrade to the eng bootloader.
Tools like z4root and such keep people that have very little knowledge with no desire to learn rooting their devices just because. The pool of root users is dumb enough already, no need to dumb it down even more.
But to answer your question - no, I haven't heard of anything like that in the works. Doesn't mean it isn't, but I haven't heard of anything.
